Outside our hotel in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, a seemingly ancient woman waited beside the door with her hand outstretched.Every day I put my hand in hers as our eyes met.She never failed to return my smile, my grasp, and my greeting. On the last day of our visit, I found myself alone on a busy corner across the street from our hotel.Bicycles and motorbikes rushed in front of me.As I hesitated on the sidewalk, I felt a hand on my elbow and looked down to see the smile of my
small beggar friend looking up at me.She nodded her head toward the street, indicating that she would take me across.Together, we moved slowly into the chaos. Then we moved on toward the sidewalk, where she pulled my face down to hers, kissed me on both cheeks, and then left, still smiling and waving back to me.Traveling in poorer nations, I have witnessed a variety of ways to deal with beggars. The most common response of tourists faced with the poverty-stricken is to ignore them and focus their eyes elsewhere.I have seen people push away an outstretched hand in angry annoyance.A few may drop a few coins into the hand in a hurry, hoping that other ragged pursuers won’t immediately appear on the scene. For many reasons, giving money is not the best response to an outstretched hand. Many world travelers have discovered that the greatest gift they can give is their time and respect.Everyone needs recognition(认可), to be seen as worthy of being known, to feel appreciated and loved. And I believe that everyone is worthy and worth knowing.

A messaging service to send e-mails from the dead has been started called the Last Messages Club. The service allows personal notes written ahead of their death to be sent to loved ones in the future.
Important documents such as wills and insurance information can also be accessed through the service. Organizers insist The Last Messages Club is in no way frightening but eases(缓解) the stress and pain associated with the death of a loved one.A member can write up to 100 e-mails that can be sent once they die at times of their choosing, such as when a relative or loved one marries or has a child. The Last Messages Club works by giving each member a secure and private account. They are then able to create messages to be sent specifically to their chosen addresses. These messages can range from a final love letter, guidance for someone left behind, a list of instructions, information on life insurance to other financial information.
Photos, videos and documents can also be attached.
The technical adviser said, "It's strange really as it makes you face your own death in a sense.I thought at first that maybe it was a bit frightening but on consideration I think it's a great idea as it would be nice for loved ones to receive messages from me when I' m no longer here."
"The messages are personal but most of them are humorous. It also makes you think about smaller things like making sure you remind someone to cancel your bus pass."
Geoff Reiss, founder of The Last Messages Club, said, "No one likes to think about their coming death, but it is much better to be fully-prepared, so that there is less stress on your loved ones after you pass away."

A.By making people face their own death before it comes.
B.By giving each member a secure and private account.

Each Indian was supposed to keep his birth name until he was old enough to earn one for himself. But his playmates would always give him a name of their own.No matter what his parents called him,his childhood friends would use the name they had chosen.0ften it was not pleasing, such as Bow Legs or Bad Boy.But sometimes a name fit so well that the youngster found it difficult to shake it off. If he could not earn a better one from a war 1ater,he could be stuck with a name like Bow Legs for the rest of his life.
The Indian earned his real name when he was old enough for his first fight against the enemy. His 1ife name depended on how he acted during this first battle. When he returned from the war,the whole tribe(部落)would gather and hold a ceremony(仪式)in which he would be given his name by the chief. If he had done well,he would get a good name.0therwise he might be called Crazy Wolf or Man-Afraid-Of-a-Horse.So an Indian’s name told his record or described the kind of man he was.
A man was given many chances to improve his name, however. If in a later battle he was brave in fighting against the enemy,he was given a better name. Some of our great fighters had as many as twelve names——all good and each better than the last.An Indian’s names belonged to him for the rest of his life.No one else could use them.Even he himself could not give them away because names were given by the tribe, not the family. So no man could pass on his name unless the chief and the tribe asked him to do so.
Sometimes an Indian would be asked to give his name to a son who had performed a noticeable deed.I know of only three or four times when this happened. It is the rarest honor for a person-—the honor of assuming(承担)his father’s name.71.An Indian could be given the second name by ______.
A.his father
B.the enemy
C.the chief of the tribe
D.his childhood friends
72.The greatest honor an Indian could earn was ______.
A.a victory in his first battle against the enemy
B.a name given by the chief
C.a ceremony to get his real name
D.the right to use his father’s name
73.If an Indian had more than ten names, it meant that ______.
A.many people in the tribe liked him
B.he was a great fighter
C.he had a lot of friends
D.he had fought in fewer than ten battles
74.Which name is the best for a great Indian fighter?
A. The last one.
B. The first one.
C. The name given by the chief.
D. The name given by his playmates.
75. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?
A.The names given by the playmates were usually not pleasant.
B.The life name of an Indian was earned in battles.
C.An Indian could throw away his birth name when he was old enough to earn one for himself.
D.The Indians themselves were not allowed to give their names away.

Types of buildings in ancient Egypt
Historians consider the ancient Egyptians to be the first builders known to mankind. It’s through the Egyptians that the modern world learned basic design in putting up buildings.Ancient Egyptian buildings were made of sun-baked bricks, straw and mud from the Nile River.Tombs and temples, which were made of stone, 1asted longer, but also deteriorated over the course of time because of earthquakes and other acts of nature.
Types
There are three kinds of ancient Egyptian architecture:buildings for the living, buildings housing the dead and religious buildings such as temples and shrines(神殿).Some of the world’s most identifiable(可辨认)的structures come from ancient Egypt, such as the Great Pyramid, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.________
The region’s lack of rain and wood, coupled with much sunshine, made bricks the best building material in ancient Egypt.Nile mud, when mixed with straw, produced strong bricks.Houses were made of river mud.Stone was also used, although not as much as river mud.Stone was typically used for building temples and tombs,
while bricks were used in building royal palaces and fortresses.Because there wash’t much wood available,it was rarely a source for building materials.
The pyramids
Most historians believe the pyramids of ancient Egypt were tombs for Egypt’s pharaohs(法老)during both the Old Kingdom and Middle Kingdom periods.Other theories claim the pyramids were used as sundials or giant geometric(几何学的)puzzles. The largest of the pyramids, built around 2530 B.C., was for the final resting place of Pharaoh Khufu.Until the early 1900s,it was the largest building on Earth.Temples
Ancient Egyptians viewed their temples as homes to their gods.Temples could be either single buildings or huge complexes. The most important part of the temple was
the shrine. It was there that the image of a god was housed. Many of the temples of ancient Egypt became complex building systems.
Columns(石制圆柱)
Architecture of ancient Egypt is known for its elegant columns, which were elaborately(精巧地)decorated with colored depictions(描述)of Egyptian life.According to the TourEgypt.com website, more than 30 different column forms have been found from various time periods.
76.What does the underlined word“deteriorated” probably mean?

Dear Frank,
I’m glad to receive your letter,in which you recommended me to take exercise by playing tennis. I appreciate it a 1ot because it is really a wonderful way of keeping fit.
However, it’s impossible for me to play tennis because it's not so popular in our country and there are not many tennis courts in my hometown.Besides, most students are busy preparing for the College Entrance Exams and I have some difficulty finding partners to play with.Owing to the factors above,I rarely play tennis in my spare time.
But I have my own ways of exercise.I have taken up jogging in the morning since last year and in this way I can refresh myself quickly;meanwhile,I am fond of playing basketball.I’m convinced that I can not only build up my body and mind but develop team spirit by playing basketball
Why not share some interesting moments with me in your next letter?
Look forward to your early reply.
Best wishes,
Yours ever,
Zhou Yang

W: OK, but could we make it a little later? I won’t finish my work until 6: 30.
M: No problem. What time can you make it?
W: I’m sure I can make it by 7: 30, but how about having dinner first? It’s really busy around here today, and I didn’t have time for lunch.
M: OK. I know a fantastic Mexican restaurant. So we can meet there, what do you think?
W: But I don’t really like Mexican food. Could we go to a Chinese restaurant instead?
M: Yeah. The Taste of Hong Kong. It is really close to the court.

M: Well, Amy, you have so many clocks in your bedroom!
W: You know I just want them to wake me up in the morning.
M: But is there something wrong with your clocks? None of them has the same time.
W: I do it on purpose. I set the red clock ahead ten minutes, and the blue one back ten minutes, but
I always set the orange one to the right time.
M: It’s quite interesting. So the alarms ring every ten minutes?
W: Absolutely.
M: Why do you set them like that?
W: Because I am a heavy sleeper. I need thunder to wake me up.

W: Which one? Let me see. Oh, that’s difficult. I’m sorry, Carlos. I can’t help you now. I’m watching TV, I can help you later.
M: Oh? What are you watching?
W: I’m watching a good Western film with John Wayne.
M: Can Mr. Flynn help me?
W: Well, no, he can’t. Not now. He’s reading.
M: What’s he reading?
W: He’s reading a magazine.
M: What about Kate?
W: Oh, she can’t help you now. She’s talking on the phone.
M: Who’s she talking to?
W: I don’t know. You’re asking a lot o f questions tonight, Carlos?
M: Yes, I know. I’m practicing my English.
