When I was struggling with cancer a few years ago, my wife and I formed our own “couple caution circle〞. Anytime a doctor came with news of my progress, my wife would give me a big hug. The reports were seldom good during the early stages of my illness, and one day a doctor brought particularly frightening news. Staring at my reports, he said in a low voice, “It doesn’t look like you’re going to make it.〞
Before I could ask him a question, my wife stood up, handed me my clothes , adjusted the tubes fastened to my body and said , “Let’s get out of here .This man is a risk to your health.〞 As she helped me struggle to the door, the doctor came near us. “Stay back,〞demanded my wife. “Stay away from us.〞
As we walked together down the hall, the doctor attempted to catch up with us. “Keep going ,〞 said my wife , pushing the intravenous (静脉注射的) stand . “We’re going to talk to someone who really knows what is going on.〞 Then she held up her hand to the doctor. “Don’t come any closer to us.〞
The two of us moved as one. We escaped to the safety and hope of a doctor who did not confuse diagnosis with conclusion. I could never have made that walk toward wellness alone. 56.From the passage we know .

We arranged that Kissinger〔基辛格〕would fly to Vietnam early in July and then stop in Pakistan on the way back. There he would develop a stomachache that would require him to stay in bed and not be seen by the press. Then with President Yapha’s help, he would be taken to an airport where a Pakistani jet would fly him over the mountains to China.
Kissinger’s trip was given the name Polo after Marco Polo, another Western traveler who made history by journeying to China. Everything went quite smoothly. His slight illness in Islamabad received only small attention from reporters covering him. They
accepted the story that he would be kept shut up for at least a few days and began making arrangements for their own activities.
Because of the need for complete secrecy and the lack of any direct communication facilities〔联络设备(shèbèi)〕between Beijing and Washington, I knew that we would have no word from Kissinger while he was in China. Even after he had returned to Pakistan, it would still be important to keep it secret, so before Kissinger left, we agreed on a single code word-Eureka-which he would use if his mission〔任务,使命〕was successful and the presidential trip had been arranged.
On July 11, Al Haig, who knew our code word, phoned to say that a cable〔电报〕from Kissinger had arrived.
“What’s the message?〞I asked. “Eureka,〞he replied.
60. Kissinger stopped in Pakistan because____________.

C.he did not want to be seen by the press
D.he would like to take a Pakistani jet on his way back.

62. Washington would have no word form Kissinger while he was in China, mainly because ________.
A.his trip must be kept secret
B.President Yapha would not fly together with Kissinger
C.Communication between China and Islamabad was impossible
D.Al Haig would phone to the author to tell him about Kissinger’s trip.
63. From the passage we can infer that Kissinger’s cable carrying the message“Eureka〞
must have been sent________.
A.before he had left Beijing
B.soon after he had returned to Pakistan from China.
C.as soon as he had arrived in Washington on July 11
D.before he returned to Pakistan on July 11

For a small town, Manhattan, Kansas has some big surprises. And one of them is the Holiday Inn Hotel, with rooms built around a swimming pool and a friendly atmosphere.
The Holiday Inn is where Manhattan people often go for a special party, or a night out. A lot of them choose to eat in the bright-lit restaurant near the pool. And many of them will be served by Ellen Logan, who has worked as a waitress here for more then two years.
Ellen, like most of the waitresses, is also a student. She comes from Nebraska, but she's planning one day to be a veterinary surgeon, and to care for small animals. But in order to support herself at college, she works twenty hours a week at the Holiday Inn.
Ellen soon learned what every waitress finds out. Your best friend has a good pair of shoes. She paid forty-five dollars for hers, much more than she would usually spend. She's discovered something else too. You don't have to know much about food to be a good waitress, but you do have to know a lot about people.
"A lot of business people always stay here when they come to Manhattan, " she explains. "They like you to recognize them and remember their favorite dishes. But some couples come for a night out together. They just want to be left alone. Then there are people who can't make up their minds. They look down the menu and say, ‘What do you suggest?’ So I ask them how hungry they are. If they say, ‘Not very’, I suggest the salad bar, wit h soup, salad, bread, and a fruit plate. But if they say they're very hungry, I suggest a Kansas Strip Steak, with potatoes or rice. You get salad and bread as well. It's very nice. Real good value. "
Ellen may get tired feet sometimes, but at least she's learning too much about people. She'll probably make a good animal doctor, but if she finds she doesn't like it after all, she can become a psychiatrist(心理医生.) instead.

Each year on the first Saturday in March, a group of middle-aged men and a few women gather at sunrise on a beach near St. Petersburg, Fla. Above the high-water line are more than 50 small boats.
At exactly 7 a.m., Steve Isaac stands at the water’s edge with his arm raised and yells: “Go!〞
Most of the boats are part of the Everglades Challenge. They head for a finish line many days and 300 miles to the south, at Key Largo. But this Saturday, for the first time, 10 of the brave mariners—including a journalist, whose progress will be available online—will compete in the world’s toughest small boat race, called the Ultimate Florida Challenge.
Instead of finishing at Key Largo, the 10 boaters will continue around the state, heading north past Miami, the Kennedy Space Center, and Jacksonville, then down the Suwannee River, eventually passing most of Florida before arriving back at the beach near St. Petersburg.
It will be 1,200 miles of head winds and burning sun. But it will also take the challengers through some of the most impressive scenery in North America.
The rules are no-nonsense: First one back to the beach wins. The voyage must be completed within a month. Human power or sails, only. No motors. No rides in cars or tows from power boats. No help from family or friends. And at least once a day, participants are required to acknowledge by cell phone or radio that they are still alive.
The race will be a replay of the tale of the tortoise (龟) and the rabbit. The trick, if there is one, is to be a tortoise and just keep moving forward. But the one-month deadline means
that being too much of a tortoise may result in failure. So challengers have to be a little bit of a rabbit, as well.
72. What can we infer from the passage?
A. People can watch the 1200-mile race on the net this year.
B. Over 50 boats will take part in the 300-mile race this year.
C. The racers cannot take a rest during the race.
D. The winner will act as a tortoise in the play.
73. This 1,200-mile race is unusual because _____.
A. more people will take part
B. only men will take part
C. it’s rules are meaningless
D. it will be more challenging
74. According to the last paragraph, _____ is most important if one wants to win the race.
A. strength
B. courage
C. equipment
D. strategy
75. Which can be the best title for the passage?
A. Around the coast in 30 days
B. Among the life-and-death tests
C. A new world record expected
D. Everglades Challenge on line
