Do humans more and more think for themselves in an era of rapid technological change leading to increasing academic and life complexity? I agree that undue reliance on technology would likely be advantageous; however, in my view both positive and negative effects of all aspects might be concurrent, calling for a balance in utilization of technology.
It is unexceptionable that technology has brought us great convenience of life and uncovers the veil of mysterious nature, showing the truer substance of nature. The past sixty years have witnessed a sharp boom in traffic and communicating technology, which globalize the earth we live as a whole family. We now can arrive at Beijing from my hometown Hubei Province only in 15 hours, which was needed nearly 2 months if normally before trains have been applied to the traffic for transportation. Recently the time would likely be shortened to 6 hours which is less than half of before once the High Speed System has been built.
Moreover, communication tools, such as cellphones, computers and notebooks, is becoming a commonplace possessed by almost everyone which is absolutely luxuries just decades ago. How does it happen? The progress of technology must account for it because one aim of innovative technology is to achieve more convenient and cheaper tools for humans. Thanks to these subtle communication tools we could fluently talk and meet with each other without prevention of geography. The day when we people on the earth stay together talking and laughing is coming.
From the ancient Greek philosophy to current scientific branches biology, physics and chemistry human never stop pursuing the truth of the nature. With technology, people overcome the fatal epidemic disease SARS; with technology, we know the secret of human’s heredity; with technology, we believe that the earthquake will be predicted in the near future. And a greater surprise the coming technology would bring us might be just around the corner.
However, despite the advantages presented above, people are more fatigued and less think for themselves by excessively relying on technology products. For instance, although the typewriter and computer keyboard have relieved human from onerous physical handwriting since they were invented, more and more people complain of forgetting handwriting just because of too much usage of typewriters. Meanwhile, the handwriting as a traditional art is increasingly neglected, which is a consequential heritage of ancestors.
Additionally, according to an interesting survey about the reasons of the obesity, the survey shows a connection between obesity with television remote control usage. It seems that obesity suffered by some people could be ascribed to the less movement when they watch television changing the channels by remote control than ever they needed to come to the television’s front from a sofa to do the same thing. The result might partly demonstrate that technology lead to lazy individuals, then individuals’ obesity.
Simply put, the progress and spread of technology are inevitable, which no one can prevent or avoid utilizing it in spite of some negative impairs. Thus, a balance between advantages and disadvantages technology bring about is needed to lead it to serving for people better and further exploring enigmas of nature.
