The Awesome Lei Feng Memorial Day
Every year on March 5th, we have a special day at school called the Lei Feng Memorial Day. It's a day when we learn about a super cool guy named Lei Feng who was a soldier in the People's Liberation Army. Even though he lived a long time ago, he did so many nice things that people still remember him today!
The teachers always get us really excited for Lei Feng Memorial Day. A few weeks before, they start telling us stories about Lei Feng's life. He grew up pretty poor, but he never let that stop him from helping others. Even as a little kid, he would do chores for his neighbors and share his food if they didn't have enough.
When Lei Feng got older, he joined the army. As a soldier, he spent pretty much all his free time volunteering and doing good deeds. He would help old ladies carry heavy bags, fix things for people who couldn't do it themselves, and even give his pay to families who really needed money. He worked really hard but
never asked for anything in return. Lei Feng once said "Serving the people wholeheartedly is the highest reward."
Lei Feng was always thinking of others before himself. One time, he was on a truck driving through a super muddy area when the truck got stuck. Without even hesitating, Lei Feng jumped right into the thick mud to push the truck free - he didn't care at all that his uniform got all dirty! Another time, when visiting his home village, he saw an elderly man struggling to pull a heavy cart of coal up a steep hill. Lei Feng rushed over and insisted on pulling the cart up the hill himself so the old man wouldn't have to struggle so much.
The teachers tell us these amazing stories to inspire us to be more like Lei Feng - hard working, humble, and always ready to lend a hand without asking for anything back. They want us to learn that no act of kindness is too small, and that helping others should be a priority. Lei Feng once wrote, "A journey of thousand miles starts with a single step." Even little kids like us can make a big difference by doing small good deeds every day.
On Lei Feng Memorial Day, the whole school gets involved to honor his memory. We have assemblies where students perform plays and sing songs about Lei Feng's life. Some kids dress up like Lei Feng in his army uniform. We make posters and
drawings showing Lei Feng's acts of service. The really good artists even paint huge murals and landscapes with Lei Feng helping people in different scenes.
My favorite part is when we go out into the community to volunteer, just like Lei Feng did. The younger students might pick up litter in the park or weed flower beds around the neighborhood. Older kids will do yard work for elderly people who can't do it themselves anymore. We've even repainted buildings, carried groceries, and done car washes to raise money for good causes. I feel so proud to be helping others and making my school and city look nicer.
After a long day of activities, we have a big ceremony. Local army soldiers and veterans are invited as honored guests. A few students get picked to dress up as Lei Feng and re-enact some of his most famous good deeds while speakers tell the stories. At the end, we all make a pledge to keep Lei Feng's spirit alive by committing random acts of kindness throughout the year.
Lei Feng died while pretty young, after being struck by a falling pole in a bizarre accident. He was just 22 years old. But the example he set lives on. To me, Lei Feng is like a superhero, but a real one who used his power to serve humanity selflessly. He inspires me to be a better person who thinks of others first. I
hope that when I grow up, people will say that I have a heart full of kindness like Lei Feng.
The Lei Feng Memorial Day is way more than just a holiday - it's a reminder for all of us to step up and lend a hand in our communities. Whenever I see someone struggling with heavy bags, or an elderly person who needs help, I think "What would Lei Feng do?" And then I do it! Even a small gesture can mean the world to someone in need.
The values that Lei Feng represented like humility, hard work, and putting service before self are still so important today. Our world has enough conflicts, greed and people just looking out for themselves. We need more real-life role models like Lei Feng who show that true strength and fulfillment come from giving of yourself to others.
So every March 5th, I look forward to honoring Lei Feng's incredible legacy. I get inspired all over again to be a helper and a giver, no matter how big or small the act. Lei Feng taught that a life of service is the most worthwhile life you can live. And I believe him! I hope Lei Feng's shining example will motivate generation after generation to come. Imagine how amazing our world would be if we all followed Lei Feng's path of compassion,
kindness, and doing good just for the sake of good itself. What an awesome way to live!

The Best Day of the Year
Lei Feng Memorial Day is the bestest day of the whole year! I look forward to it more than my birthday or even Christmas. It's a special day where we get to learn about and celebrate the life of the most awesome guy ever - Lei Feng!
For those of you who don't know, Lei Feng was a soldier in the People's Liberation Army back in the 1960s. But he wasn't just any ordinary soldier. He was a super nice and caring guy who helped everyone around him in any way he could. It didn't matter if you were his superior officer or just a regular person on the street, if Lei Feng saw someone who needed help, he'd lend a hand without hesitation.
Whether it was carrying heavy bags for little old ladies, volunteering to do extra chores around the army base, or just offering kind words of encouragement, Lei Feng was always willing to go the extra mile to brighten someone's day. His selfless acts of service and the humble, polite way he went about them quickly made him a hero to the people of China. Sadly, Lei
Feng passed away at the young age of 22 after being struck by a falling telephone pole, but his amazing spirit lives on.
That's why every year on March 5th, we take time in schools across the country to honor Lei Feng's memory and spread his message of helpful patriotism, hard work, and concern for others. It's kind of like a second birthyday party for him, except instead of cake and presents there are lots of fun activities and lessons about being a caring citizen just like Lei Feng was.
The celebrations always start off with an assembly where we watch a short film about Lei Feng's life and the super cool things he did to help people. Then we'll sing some songs praising his heroic deeds and unselfish attitude like "Follow the Brilliant Example of Comrade Lei Feng" or "Lei Feng's Goodwill is Immortal". My favorite is always "Little Lei Feng" which reminds us how even as a kid, Lei Feng would spend his allowance money buying food for poor families instead of keeping it for himself. What a guy!
After the assembly, we get to go do Lei Feng activities ourselves to put his caring spirit into practice. Sometimes we'll make get well cards to send to sick kids in the hospital or put together care packages of supplies to donate to nursing homes. Other times, we'll pick up litter around the neighborhood, wash
chalkboards for our teachers after class, or even do little home repairs like tightening loose door knobs for the school janitors.
My absolute favorite Lei Feng activity though is when we get to go visit neighborhoods with lots of seniors living alone and do household chores for them. It's so fun getting to meet the friendly grandmas and grandpas while helping out by sweeping their floors, washing their windows, or taking out their trash cans for them. They're always smiling from ear to ear and give us little treats like candy or fresh fruit as a thank you. Doing good deeds for others feels so awesome!
At the end of the day, we always finish up by sharing stories about the Lei Feng activities we did and how we felt helping out the community. I'll never forget last year when I got to weed an older lady's garden for her. She gave me the biggest hug after and told me I had the heart of Lei Feng himself. Hearing that made me happier than anything!
That's what Lei Feng Memorial Day means to me - putting Lei Feng's giving spirit into action by looking for ways to brighten someone's day, even through little acts of kindness. He taught us that no good deed is too small and that we should always be willing to lend a helping hand to our fellow citizens no matter who they are.
I hope Lei Feng's amazing example inspires you as much as it does me. So this March 5th, keep an eye out for opportunities to be a "Lei Feng" yourself by showing compassion and doing something nice for others around you. You'll feel like a total champion! Just remember the Lei Feng motto - "Ren'ai licai, Zhongyu youshou" which means "Wherever you go, be warmly concerned for others." Do that, and Lei Feng's incredible legacy will live on forever.

The Meaning of Lei Feng Day
Hi there! My name is Lucy and I'm a 5th grader here in China. Every year on March 5th, we have a really special day called Lei Feng Memorial Day. It's a day to remember a great guy named Lei Feng who lived a long time ago and did lots of nice things to help people.
Lei Feng was born in 1940 in a place called Hunan Province. When he was little, his mom and dad were really poor farmers who could barely put food on the table. Life was super hard back then, especially during times of war which happened a lot in China in those days. Despite having practically nothing, Lei
Feng's parents taught him to be a kind and giving person who cared about others.
When Lei Feng was 20 years old, he joined the People's Liberation Army. As a soldier, he was known for going way above and beyond his duties. He would give all his extra food and money to hungrier soldiers. He worked extra hard doing chores like cleaning and repairs without anyone asking. He helped teach kids who couldn't afford school. Basically, he was always finding ways to lend a hand without wanting anything in return.
The amazing thing is, Lei Feng lived such a selfless life purely out of the goodness of his heart. He wasn't looking for fame or rewards. In his diary, he wrote: "I'll sell my blood and flesh for the revolution!" meaning he just deeply cared about the people and wanted to dedicate himself to making China better. Pretty awesome, right?
Sadly, Lei Feng died way too young at age 22 when he was hit by a falling pole while directing traffic during a storm. Even then, his last words were making sure others were safe first. After his death, his story of humble service and kindness was shared far and wide, inspiring millions across China.
That's why we now celebrate Lei Feng Memorial Day each March 5th. It's a reminder to be like him - to help others in need,
work hard, and put the greater good ahead of ourselves. Our school always does special activities to honor Lei Feng's spirit.
Last year for Lei Feng Day, we had an assembly where some kids did a play re-enacting scenes from Lei Feng's life of good deeds. We learned some of his famous quotes like "A meal once lost is nothing to worry about, as long as we have lofty ideals to warm our hearts." Isn't that just the coolest way to look at things? No matter how tough life gets, focusing on helping others is what keeps us going.
Afterwards, the whole school went out and did service projects around the neighborhood. My class swept up litter in the park and pulled weeds from the community garden. Some older kids visited a home for the elderly, playing games and singing songs with the grandmas and grandpas there. It felt amazing brightening their day like that.
My favorite part was writing letters of appreciation to workers who don't usually get much thanks - janitors who keep our school clean, delivery drivers braving rain or shine, and firefighters protecting us. I told the school custodian Mr. Wang how we all see his hard work and it doesn't go unnoticed. He had the biggest smile, it was so heartwarming!
At home, my little brother and I helped our mom cook a nice meal for our neighbor Mrs. Chen, a sweet elderly lady who lives alone. She is always so kind, sharing fruits and veggies from her little garden. But it's hard for her to cook for just herself. Seeing her happy face as she ate the dumplings we made was the best feeling.
This year for Lei Feng Day, our class is putting together care packages for children at the hospital - coloring books, puzzles, and our handmade get-well cards. We'll deliver them in person and perform some cheery songs too. I can't wait to hopefully raise their spirits during a tough time.
My dad says Lei Feng may have lived long ago, but his example is just as important today as ever before. In our modern, busy, technology-filled world, it's so easy to get caught up in our own lives and devices, becoming self-centered. Celebrating this special day keeps Lei Feng's giving spirit alive.
It reminds us to look outwards - to see others' struggles and find ways to lend a hand, even in small gestures. To appreciate workers who toil to serve us day-to-day. To be good citizens always striving to better our communities, not by big heroic acts necessarily, but through lots of little acts of service and compassion added together. As Lei Feng put it so perfectly: "The
youth should conscientiously study, work and strive to become pillars of our nation."
I feel incredibly lucky to be learning these powerful values from a young age. No matter how old I get or what I end up doing in life, Lei Feng's giving heart and devotion to helping the greater good will always be my role model. That's what Lei Feng Memorial Day means to me - a yearly celebration ensuring his beautiful legacy lives on, inspiring every new generation just like the last.
Even in modern times, Lei Feng's shining example guides us by showing the incredible difference a single person can make just by caring and working hard for others. His vision of service, kindness and unity is the key to creating a kinder, more just and harmonious world. How cool is that? I hope everyone - kids and grownups alike - embraces the spirit of Lei Feng Day by reaching out to help their neighbors and communities, bringing his dream closer to reality.
Well, that's all from me for now! Let's all go out and Be Like Lei for the rest of Lei Feng Day and every day after that. Imagine how incredible our world would be if each of us followed his example - now that would be something truly special! Thanks for reading my essay. Service is my greatest honor!

The Best Day of the Year
Hi everyone! My name is Lily and I'm a 5th grader. Today I want to tell you all about my favorite day of the whole year - Lei Feng Memorial Day! It's the best day ever and I look forward to it for months.
Every March 5th, we celebrate Lei Feng Memorial Day at my school to remember a really great guy named Lei Feng. He was a soldier in the People's Liberation Army a long time ago. Even though he didn't have much money or fancy things, Lei Feng helped absolutely everyone he could. He did chores for little old ladies, fixed things for people, gave food to the hungry, and was just super nice and caring to everybody around him. He worked really hard at his job as a soldier but also spent all his free time helping others without ever asking for anything back. What a guy!
So on Lei Feng Memorial Day, we have lots of fun activities at school to learn about Lei Feng's amazing spirit of kindness and helping others. We do service projects, put on little plays about his life, have contests to see who can do the most good deeds, and more. It's such a blast!
My favorite part is definitely the good deeds contest. Basically, all the students try as hard as we can to be like Lei Feng and help people out over the weeks leading up to March 5th. We make tallies of all the good things we do, like helping our parents around the house, sharing snacks with friends, helping carry things for teachers, volunteering to clean up litter, visiting seniors homes to spend time with the elderly residents, and so on. Then on Lei Feng Day we all get together and share the kindest acts we did. The student with the most good deeds gets a special medal and prize!
I work my heart out every year trying to win that medal. Not just because I really want to win, but because I love doing kind things for others so much. It feels amazing to put a smile on someone's face or help them out when they're struggling. Just like Lei Feng did his whole life. I get such a warm, tingly, happy feeling inside whenever I can be helpful and nice. It's the best!
Last year, I raked all the fallen leaves in my elderly neighbor Mr. Zhang's yard for him since it's getting too hard for him to do it himself. I also spent every Saturday reading books and playing games with the kids at the hospital children's ward to cheer them up. And I used my allowance money to buy bags of dog and cat food which I donated to the local animal shelter. By the time Lei
Feng Memorial Day rolled around, I had tallied up 83 good deeds! Can you believe it? Unfortunately, my friend Michael did 89 so he ended up winning the medal. But I didn't even care because being kind felt so good.
I'm already getting pumped for Lei Feng Day this year! Over the next few weeks, I'm going to be the biggest helper and nicest friend I can possibly be. I have a whole list of ideas like donating my old clothes and toys I don't use anymore, visiting a nursing home to spend time with the grandpas and grandmas there, tutoring some younger kids who are struggling in school, doing grocery shopping for a sick neighbor, and tons more. I'll rack up so many good deeds that I'll be unstoppable!
Lei Feng Day is just the best because it reminds us all how important and awesome it is to be a caring, generous person who helps others whenever we can. The world would be such an incredible place if we were all a little more like Lei Feng. So that's why I'll never stop celebrating Lei Feng Memorial Day - it inspires me to be the kindest kid I can be, not just on March 5th, but all 365 days of the year!

Today is a Very Special Day!
Hi everyone! My name is Sophie and I'm 10 years old. Today is March 5th, which is Learn from Lei Feng Memorial Day in China. Lei Feng was a soldier in the People's Liberation Army who lived a long time ago. Even though he didn't have a lot of money or fancy things, he helped others all the time without ever asking for anything in return. He is famous for doing lots of kind and selfless deeds for people. That's why we celebrate his life on this special day every year!
At my school, we had a big assembly this morning to talk about Lei Feng and why he was so great. The principal told us all about his life story. Lei Feng grew up very poor in the countryside. From a young age, he had to work really hard doing chores and helping on the family farm. But no matter how tired he was, he always tried his best to lend a hand to neighbors in need. As he grew older, he joined the army and continued putting others before himself at all times.
The principal said Lei Feng's kind heart and willing spirit are great examples we should all learn from. He didn't do good deeds for awards or attention. He simply wanted to make life easier for those around him however he could. The principal reminded us that no act of service is too small if it comes from a sincere place of caring. Even kids like me can follow Lei Feng's
lead by doing nice things for family, friends, classmates, and our community without expecting anything back. It's all about spreading kindness!
After the assembly, my classmates and I had a bunch of fun activities planned for the rest of the day. We started by cleaning up our school campus and neighborhood streets. We put on gloves and grabbed trash pickers to collect any litter we could find. It was hard work bending over and walking around looking for garbage for a few hours. But it felt good to take pride in our school area and make it look nice and clean. Keeping our surroundings tidy is one small way to serve others.
Next, we visited a nursing home in our city. The elderly residents' faces lit up when we arrived carrying handmade cards, drawings, and flowers. We sang them some songs and told funny jokes to make them laugh. Lots of the grandpas and grandmas don't get many visitors, so they were really happy to have us there. We could tell our short performance brightened their day.
A few of my classmates even stayed to help feed lunch to some residents who have a hard time eating on their own. It warmed my heart to spread some cheer and lend an easy hand however we could.
After the nursing home visit, we walked over to the children's hospital next door. We made get well soon cards for the kids stuck staying there. I drew a silly picture of a cartoon bear doctor on my card and wrote "Hope you feel better soon! Keep smiling!" I tried to make it as cheerful and colorful as possible. The nurses said they would hand the cards out to patients who could use an extra smile. Even though we couldn't meet the kids ourselves, hopefully our cards let them know they aren't alone and people care about them.
The last activity was my favorite part of the whole day - baking cookies and treats to donate to a local homeless shelter! We measured ingredients, mixed the batter, shaped the dough into fun designs, and watched as the sweet smells filled the air while they baked. Once cooled, we individually wrapped and boxed up hundreds of goodies. My class will deliver them to the shelter kitchen tomorrow. I'm picturing the happy faces of people who maybe haven't had a fresh homemade treat in a long time. Food can warm both bellies and hearts!
As I look back on today, I feel proud of everything my classmates and I accomplished through our various acts of service and kindness in the community. And we had a lot of fun doing it all together as friends! Even though we are just kids, we
proved that no gesture of goodwill is too small if your heart is in the right place, just like Lei Feng himself. He may have lived long ago, but his caring spirit lives on through wonderful days like this.
The principal was right - anyone can follow Lei Feng's example by putting other people's needs before your own sometimes. You don't have to give big gifts or money to lend a helping hand. Sometimes the best gifts are free, like sharing a smile, keeping areas clean, creating handmade items to brighten someone's day, giving time and attention, or simply being a supportive friend. As long as you approach tasks cheerfully and with a willing spirit, your good deeds will make a positive difference in the world no matter how small they may seem.
I want to keep Lei Feng's legacy alive by continuing to find ways to serve others, not just on this one special day, but all year round. Even kids like me can spread kindness through everyday actions and thoughtful gestures. That's the true meaning behind Learn from Lei Feng Memorial Day - celebrating a life of humble service while being inspired to follow that example of compassionate selflessness ourselves. If we all aim to lend a hand and think of others more, imagine how much better and brighter
our world could be! I'll keep doing my part, no matter how tiny it seems. Who's with me?。
