I also want to express a special thanks to you Shmuley, who for 11 years served as Rabbi here at Oxford. You and I have been working so hard to form Heal the Kids, as well as writing our book about childlike qualities, and in all of our efforts you have been such a supportive and loving friend. And I would also like to thank Toba Friedman, our director of operations at Heal the Kids, who is returning tonight to the alma mater where she served as a Marshall scholar, as well as Marilyn Piels, another central member of our Heal the Kids team.I am humbled to be lecturing in a place that has previously been filled by such notable figures as Mother Theresa, Albert Einstein, Ronald Reagan, Robert Kennedy and Malcolm X. I've even heard that Kermit the Frog has made an appearance here, and I've always felt a kinship with Kermit's message that it's not easy being green. I'm sure he didn't find it any easier being up here than I do!I suppose I should start by listing my qualifications to speak before you this evening. Friends, I do not claim to have the academic expertise of other speakers who have addressed this hall, just as they could lay little claim at being adept at the moonwalk – and you know, Einstein in particular was really TERRIBLE at that.But I do have a claim to having experienced more places and cultures than most people will ever see. Human knowledge consists not only of libraries of parchment and ink – it is also comprised of the volumes of knowledge that are written on the human heart, chiseled on the human soul, and engraved on the human psyche. And friends, I have encountered so muchin this relatively short life of mine that I still cannot believe I am chiseled only 42. I often tell Shmuley that in soul years I'm sure that I'm at least 80 – and tonight I even walk like I'm 80! So please harken to my message, because what I have to tell you tonight can bring healing to humanity and healing to our planet.Through the grace of God, I have been fortunate to have achieved many of my artistic and professional aspirations realized early in my lifetime. But these, friends are accomplishments, and accomplishments alone are not synonymous with who I am. Indeed, the cheery five-year-old who belted out Rockin' Robin and Ben to adoring crowds was not indicative of the boy behind the smile.Tonight, I come before you less as an icon of pop (whatever that means anyway), and more as an icon of a generation, a generation that no longer knows what it means to be children.All of us are products of our childhood. But I am the product of a lack of a childhood, an absence of that precious and wondrous age when we frolic playfully without a care in the world, basking in the adoration of parents and relatives, where our biggest concern is studying for that big spelling test come Monday morning.Those of you who are familiar with the Jackson Five know that I began performing at the tender age of five and that ever since then, I haven't stopped dancing or singing. But while performing and making music undoubtedly remain as some of my greatest joys, when I was young I wanted more than anything else to be a typical little boy. I wanted to build tree houses, have water balloon fights, and play hide and seek with my friends. But fate had it otherwise and all I could do was envy the laughter and playtime that seemed to be going on all around me.There was no respite from my professional life. But on Sundays I would go Pioneering, the term used for the missionary work that Jehovah's Witnesses do. And it was then that I was able to see the magic of other people's childhood.Since I was already a celebrity, I would have to don a disguise of fat suit, wig, beard and glasses and we would spend the day in the suburbs of Southern California, going door-to-door or making the rounds of shopping malls, distributing our Watchtower magazine. I loved to set foot in all those regular suburban houses and catch sight of the shag rugs and La-Z-Boy armchairs with kids playing Monopoly and grandmas baby-sitting and all those wonderful, ordinary and starry scenes of everyday life. Many, I know, would argue that these things seem like no big deal. But to me they were mesmerizing.I used to think that I was unique in feeling that I was without a childhood. I believed that indeed there were only a handful with whom I could share those feelings. When I recently met with Shirley Temple Black, the great child star of the 1930s and 40s, we said nothing to each otherat first, we simply cried together, for she could share a pain with me that only others like my close friends Elizabeth Taylor and McCauley Culkin know.I do not tell you this to gain your sympathy but to impress upon you my first important point : It is not just Hollywood child stars that have suffered from a non-existent childhood. Today, it's a universal calamity, a global catastrophe. Childhood has become the great casualty of modern-day living. All around us we are producing scores of kids who have not had the joy, who have not been accorded the right, who have not been allowed the freedom, or knowing what it's like to be a kid.Today children are constantly encouraged to grow up faster, as if this period known as childhood is a burdensome stage, to be endured and ushered through, as swiftly as possible. And on that subject, I am certainly one of the world's greatest experts.Ours is a generation that has witnessed the abrogation of the parent-child covenant. Psychologists are publishing libraries of books detailing the destructive effects of denying one's children the unconditional love that is so necessary to the healthy development of their minds and character. And because of all the neglect, too many of our kids have, essentially, to raise themselves. They are growing more distant from their parents, grandparents and other family members, as all around us the indestructible bond that once glued together the generations, unravels.This violation has bred a new generation, Generation O let us call it, that has now picked up the torch from Generation X. The O stands for a generation that has everything on the outside –wealth, success, fancy clothing and fancy cars, but an aching emptiness on the inside. That cavity in our chests, that barrenness at our core, that void in our centre is the place where the heart once beat and which love once occupied.And it's not just the kids who are suffering. It's the parents as well. For the more we cultivate little-adults in kids'-bodies, the more removed we ourselves become from our own child-like qualities, and there is so much about being a child that is worth retaining in adult life.Love, ladies and gentlemen, is the human family's most precious legacy, its richest bequest, its golden inheritance. And it is a treasure that is handed down from one generation to another. Previous ages may not have had the wealth we enjoy. Their houses may have lacked electricity, and they squeezed their many kids into small homes without central heating. But those homes had no darkness, nor were they cold. They were lit bright with the glow of love and they were warmed snugly by the very heat of the human heart. He was dying of cancer and he told me how much he loved my music and me. His parents told me that he wasn't going to live, that any day he could just go, and I said to him: "Look, I am going to be coming to your town in Kansas to open my tour in three months. I said "Yeah, but you have to promise that you will wear it to the show." I was trying to make him hold on. I said: "When you come to the show I want to see you in this jacket and in this glove" and I gave him one of my rhinestone gloves – and I never usually give the rhinestone gloves away. And he was just in heaven.But maybe he was too close to heaven, because when I came to his town, he had already died, and they had buried him in the glove and jacket. He was just 10 years old. God knows, I know, that he tried his best to hold on. But at least when he died, he knew that he was loved, not only by his parents, but even by me, a near stranger, I also loved him. And with all of that love he knew that he didn't come into this world alone, and he certainly didn't leave it alone.If you enter this world knowing you are loved and you leave this world knowing the same, then everything that happens in between can he dealt with. A professor may degrade you, but you will not feel degraded, a boss may crush you, but you will not be crushed, a corporate gladiator mightvanquish you, but you will still triumph. How could any of them truly prevail in pulling you down? For you know that you are an object worthy of love. The rest is just packaging.But if you don't have that memory of being loved, you are condemned to search the world for something to fill you up. But no matter how much money you make or how famous you become, you will still fell empty. What you are really searching for is unconditional love, unqualified acceptance. And that was the one thing that was denied to you at birth.Friends, let me paint a picture for you. Here is a typical day in America –six youths under the age of 20 will commit suicide, 12 children under the age of 20 will die from firearms –remember this is a DAY, not a year – 399 kids will be arrested for drug abuse, 1,352 babies will be born to teen mothers. This is happening in one of the richest, most developed countries in the history of the world.Yes, in my country there is an epidemic of violence that parallels no other industrialized nation. These are the ways young people in America express their hurt and their anger. But don't think that there is not the same pain and anguish among their counterparts in the United Kingdom. Studies in this country show that every single hour, three teenagers in the UK inflict harm upon themselves, often by cutting or burning their bodies or taking an overdose. This is how they have chosen to cope with the pain of neglect and emotional agony.In Britain, as many as 20% of families will only sit down and have dinner together once a year. Once a year! And what about the time-honored tradition of reading your kid a bedtime story? Research from the 1980s showed that children who are read to, had far greater literacy and significantly outperformed their peers at school. And yet, less than 33% of British children ages two to eight have a regular bedtime story read to them. You may not think much of that until you take into account that 75% of their parents DID have that bedtime story when they were that age.Clearly, we do not have to ask ourselves where all of this pain, anger and violent behavior comes from. It is self-evident that children are thundering against the neglect, quaking against the indifference and crying out just to be noticed. The various child protection agencies in the US say that millions of children are victims of maltreatment in the form of neglect, in the average year. Yes, neglect. In rich homes, privileged homes, wired to the hilt with every electronic gadget. Homes where parents come home, but they're not really home, because their heads are still at the office. And their kids? Well, their kids just make do with whatever emotional crumbs they get. And you don't get much from endless TV, computer games and videos.These hard, cold numbers which for me, wrench the soul and shake the spirit, should indicate to you why I have devoted so much of my time and resources into making our new Heal the Kids initiative a colossal success.Our goal is simple – to recreate the parent/child bond, renew its promise and light the way forward for all the beautiful children who are destined one day to walk this earth.But since this is my first public lecture, and you have so warmly welcomed me into your hearts, I feel that I want to tell you more. We each have our own story, and in that sense statistics can become personal.They say that parenting is like dancing. You take one step, your child takes another. I have discovered that getting parents to re-dedicate themselves to their children is only half the story. The other half is preparing the children to re-accept their parents.When I was very young I remember that we had this crazy mutt of a dog named "Black Girl," a mix of wolf and retriever. Not only wasn't she much of a guard dog, she was such a scared and nervous thing that it is a wonder she did not pass out every time a truck rumbled by, or a thunderstorm swept through Indiana. My sister Janet and I gave that dog so much love, but we never really won back the sense of trust that had been stolen from her by her previous owner. We knew he used to beat her. We didn't know with what. But whatever it was, it was enough to suck the spirit right out of that dog.A lot of kids today are hurt puppies who have weaned themselves off the need for love. They couldn't care less about their parents. Left to their own devices, they cherish their independence. They have moved on and have left their parents behind.Then there are the far worse cases of children who harbor animosity and resentment toward their parents, so that any overture that their parents might undertake would be thrown forcefully back in their face.Tonight, I don't want any of us to make this mistake. That's why I'm calling upon all the world's children – beginning with all of us here tonight –to forgive our parents, if we felt neglected. Forgive them and teach them how to love again.You probably weren't surprised to hear that I did not have an idyllic childhood. The strain and tension that exists in my relationship with my own father is well documented. My father is a tough man and he pushed my brothers and me hard, from the earliest age, to be the best performers we could be.He had great difficulty showing affection. He never really told me he loved me. And he never really complimented me either. If I did a great show, he would tell me it was a good show. And if I did an OK show, he told me it was a lousy show.He seemed intent, above all else, on making us a commercial success. And at that he was more than adept. My father was a managerial genius and my brothers and I owe our professional success, in no small measure, to the forceful way that he pushed us. He trained me as a showman and under his guidance I couldn't miss a step.But what I really wanted was a Dad. I wanted a father who showed me love. And my father never did that. He never said I love you while looking me straight in the eye, he never played a game with me. He never gave me a piggyback ride, he never threw a pillow at me, or a water balloon.But I remember once when I was about four years old, there was a little carnival and he picked me up and put me on a pony. It was a tiny gesture, probably something he forgot five minutes later. But because of that moment I have this special place in my heart for him. Because that's how kids are, the little things mean so much to them and for me, that one moment meant everything. I only experienced it that one time, but it made me feel really good, about him and the world.But now I am a father myself, and one day I was thinking about my own children, Prince and Paris and how I wanted them to think of me when they grow up. To be sure, I would like them to remember how I always wanted them with me wherever I went, how I always tried to put them before everything else. But there are also challenges in their lives. Because my kids are stalked by paparazzi, they can't always go to a park or a movie with me.So what if they grow older and resent me, and how my choices impacted their youth? Why weren't we given an average childhood like all the other kids, they might ask? And at that moment I pray that my children will give me the benefit of the doubt. That they will say to themselves: "Our daddy did the best he could, given the unique circumstances that he faced. He may not have been perfect, but he was a warm and decent man, who tried to give us all the love in the world."I hope that they will always focus on the positive things, on the sacrifices I willingly made for them, and not criticize the things they had to give up, or the errors I've made, and will certainly continue to make, in raising them. For we have all been someone's child, and we know that despite the very best of plans and efforts, mistakes will always occur. That's just being human.And when I think about this, of how I hope that my children will not judge me unkindly, and will forgive my shortcomings, I am forced to think of my own father and despite my earlier denials, I am forced to admit that me must have loved me. He did love me, and I know that.There were little things that showed it. When I was a kid I had a real sweet tooth – we all did. My favorite food was glazed doughnuts and my father knew that. So every few weeks I would come downstairs in the morning and there on the kitchen counter was a bag of glazed doughnuts –no note, no explanation – just the doughnuts. It was like Santa Claus.Sometimes I would think about staying up late at night, so I could see him leave them there, but just like with Santa Claus, I didn't want to ruin the magic for fear that he would never do it again. My father had to leave them secretly at night, so as no one might catch him with hisguard down. He was scared of human emotion, he didn't understand it or know how to deal with it. But he did know doughnuts.And when I allow the floodgates to open up, there are other memories that come rushing back, memories of other tiny gestures, however imperfect, that showed that he did what he could. So tonight, rather than focusing on what my father didn't do, I want to focus on all the things he did do and on his own personal challenges. I want to stop judging him.I have started reflecting on the fact that my father grew up in the South, in a very poor family. He came of age during the Depression and his own father, who struggled to feed his children, showed little affection towards his family and raised my father and his siblings with an iron fist. Who could have imagined what it was like to grow up a poor black man in the South, robbed of dignity, bereft of hope, struggling to become a man in a world that saw my father as subordinate. I was the first black artist to be played on MTV and I remember how big a deal it was even then. And that was in the 80s!My father moved to Indiana and had a large family of his own, working long hours in the steel mills, work that kills the lungs and humbles the spirit, all to support his family. Is it any wonder that he found it difficult to expose his feelings? Is it any mystery that he hardened his heart, that he raised the emotional ramparts? And most of all, is it any wonder why he pushed his sons so hard to succeed as performers, so that they could be saved from what he knew to be a life of indignity and poverty?I have begun to see that even my father's harshness was a kind of love, an imperfect love, to be sure, but love nonetheless. He pushed me because he loved me. Because he wanted no man ever to look down at his offspring.And now with time, rather than bitterness, I feel blessing. In the place of anger, I have found absolution. And in the place of revenge I have found reconciliation. And my initial fury has slowly given way to forgiveness.Almost a decade ago, I founded a charity called Heal the World. The title was something I felt inside me. Little did I know, as Shmuley later pointed out, that those two words form the cornerstone of Old Testament prophecy. Do I really believe that we can heal this world, that is riddled with war and genocide, even today? And do I really think that we can heal our children, the same children who can enter their schools with guns and hatred and shoot down their classmates, like they did at Columbine? Or children who can beat a defenseless toddler to death, like the tragic story of Jamie Bulger? Of course I do, or I wouldn't be here tonight.But it all begins with forgiveness, because to heal the world, we first have to heal ourselves. And to heal the kids, we first have to heal the child within, each and every one of us. As an adult, and as a parent, I realize that I cannot be a whole human being, nor a parent capable of unconditional love, until I put to rest the ghosts of my own childhood.And that's what I'm asking all of us to do tonight. Live up to the fifth of the Ten Commandments. Honor your parents by not judging them. Give them the benefit of the doubt.That is why I want to forgive my father and to stop judging him. I want to forgive my father, because I want a father, and this is the only one that I've got. I want the weight of my past lifted from my shoulders and I want to be free to step into a new relationship with my father, for the rest of my life, unhindered by the goblins of the past.In a world filled with hate, we must still dare to hope. In a world filled with anger, we must still dare to comfort. In a world filled with despair, we must still dare to dream. And in a world filled with distrust, we must still dare to believe.To all of you tonight who feel let down by your parents, I ask you to let down your disappointment. To all of you tonight who feel cheated by your fathers or mothers, I ask you not to cheat yourself further. And to all of you who wish to push your parents away, I ask you to extend you hand to them instead. I am asking you, I am asking myself, to give our parents the gift of unconditional love, so that they too may learn how to love from us, their children. So that love will finally be restored to a desolate and lonely world.Shmuley once mentioned to me an ancient Biblical prophecy which says that a new world and a new time would come, when "the hearts of the parents would be restored through the hearts of their children." My friends, we are that world, we are those children.Mahatma Gandhi said: "The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong." Tonight, be strong. Beyond being strong, rise to the greatest challenge of all – to restore that broken covenant. We must all overcome whatever crippling effects our childhoods may have had on our lives and in the words of Jesse Jackson, forgive each other, redeem each other and move on.This call for forgiveness may not result in Oprah moments the world over, with thousands of children making up with their parents, but it will at least be a start, and we'll all be so much happier as a result.And so ladies and gentlemen, I conclude my remarks tonight with faith, joy and excitement.From this day forward, may a new song be heard.Let that new song be the sound of children laughing.Let that new song be the sound of children playing.Let that new song be the sound of children singing.And let that new song be the sound of parents listening.Together, let us create a symphony of hearts, marveling at the miracle of our children and basking in the beauty of love.Let us heal the world and blight its pain.And may we all make beautiful music together.God bless you, and I love you.。

08.Teamwork and Classroom ConversationsToday we are going to talk about “teamwork and classroom conversations”, one of my favorite topics, and as an English teacher this is something I involve everyday. Can you remember the time when you were sitting in the back of the classroom and teacher said everybody speaks English but you were in the back of the classroom speaking Chinese? Maybe that were you maybe that weren’t you.. I think most students have done that one time or another,because English is not comfortable for some people and speaking together in Chinese is more comfortable .However speaking in Chinese will not help you improve your English .So we are going to talk about “teamwork and classroom conversations” and not only in the classroom but the same thing we learn today, you can use outside classroom when you practice together. So let’s look at some of them. If you are not enjoying English conversations, you are missing the point of studying English because the purpose of the language is to communicate with people, not just pass the exam. So ,yeah you have to study for the exam, that’s important and you also have to spend time in real conversations, and that’s what we really all about,so let’s consider several methods that you can use for practicing and having in classroom and teamwork conversations. Ok?The first method is giving a speech or presentation. Many Chinese teachers and foreign teachers ask students to do this and it’s a good method. And that makes students a little nervous because that student is standing in front of the class alone and sometimes the front of class is a very lonely place when everybody is out there and you have to speak. Every mistake is clearly heard by everyone and you can be a little nervous. But it’s good; it’s a g ood experience to do that. The only problem is that if it’s too long and it’s a large class, the class is 20 or 30 students or more students, when each student does that , that means in the class of 30, one student speaks, 29 students have a long way to wi thout speaking. So it’s not real helpful for speaking, but it is really good for listening because everybody has chance to listen. And it’s also a good chance if you are shy or nervous to practice to get over being nervous and shy; it’s a good way to do th at. But if you are going to do that, if teacher wants to do that, I recommend be short, maybe limit students to five minutes or even three minutes in some cases, it can be very short.One of my favorite and favorite of many people is teamwork or group work or you divide your class to several groups. I recommend the groups to be 5 to 8 students ,less than 5 is ok, more than 8 would be exaggerate if that’s called group work, because with that many people is just like a class, just too many people don’t hav e chance to talk. So make the group smallest that everybody has chance to talk. One of the things that is very important if you use this method is everybody has equal talking time. if you have a group ,for example 6 members in the group ,and 2 or 3 members are very good at talking, and some very shy students don’t have time to say anything or they don’t have a chance to, then you really take away the purpose of the group. but if you have a group ,it’s important to have a leader, and someone can recall something, and someone can say ‘it’s your turn’ or ‘would you like to say something’ or ‘what do you think about this topic?’ if nobody is doing that, that becomes like some conversations l in your home which is natural ,but even in your home, sometimes 2 or 3 shy people just sit in the corner and don’t talk. B ut in the English class the point is everybody talks. So group work or teamwork is a good method but you have to be careful not to have too many people and you have to be careful to make sure that every people speaks equally, that is very important.What about the topics, for group work? Any topic is really ok, choose topics according to the level, for example, if you speaking English for a long time, and there’s a higher level, don’t just ask them to say ‘ my hometown is Shanghai, I like Shanghai’, that is a little a waste of time. If there’s beginning students especial for children, that’s a good topic. But as they get a little older and a little more experience, you can give more deeply topics. Make som ething deeply, it’s very important if you have to think deeply especially in English .with this purpose in the English class or English team or English group work, it’s for everyone to improve and it’s very necessary to do that .D on’t just give questions like ‘talk about your hometown,’ it’s not specific enough for some people won’t know what to say, and it’s too shallow and too easy. If you say ‘talk about your hometown and you have some shy people, for example, he’s very shy,and I’m the leader, and I just say ‘talk about your hometown, he may say ‘my hometown is Beijing and I like it’ and it stops, right? It’s not specific and it doesn’t make sense, so make sure the questions are challenging, about any kind of topics that people will continue talking about. Ask why questions. Don’t just say ‘what would you like to do in your free time?’ ‘I like play the guitar’. It really wasn’t a conversation, wasn’t it? It’s just quick question and quick answer. But if you can follow this question and ask ‘why’,’ Why do you like play the guitar?’ ‘Why do you like to play basketball?’ ‘why do you like to watch movies?’ and the ‘why ‘ make a person give a longer and more meaningful answer, so always ask ‘why ‘questions. Don’t just say ‘talk about movies’ or ,a common que stion in English class is ‘what’s your kind of favorite movie?’ it’s not a bad question, but alone in a group is just if you have 5 members besides a leader, that means you are going to have 5 quick answers and finished. And as a teacher, just come back to change the topic or it’ll be silent after that. So don’t just say ‘talk about movies’, but you can do something challenging , for example, ‘what’s your favorite movie?’ and after you tell me, ‘now please retell the story of the movie’. And that will be more challenging. And that will challenge your English to express your meaning and things like that. Don’t just say ‘what’s your major?’ that’s short and easy question, it’s an ok question, but if you only say that it’s an end, but after you tell me the majo r, you can say ‘why did you choose that major?’ or maybe ‘what kind of jobs can a person get, if they have that major?’ so challenge the group with questions like that. Now if you are in the class where the teacher doesn’t give you a challenging question, that’s ok. But if you are in the group, students can also add to the question; it’s really a little difficult as a teacher in the large class to know how much time each group needs. In my own classes, sometimes I may have 6 or more groups in the class, and this group finished, and I walk over there, and say ‘how are you doing?’ ‘we finished’and I just get over here and studying in this group . So group leader and group members can add to the questions, not was new questions but, for example , the questions about your major, one of the group members could say something like ‘ oh,that’s a kind of job you can give from that. Maybe I should choose that major. Do you think I should choose that major?’ or questions like ‘you choose that major because of that who influence you to choose that? Did your parents encourage you to do that? So you can just keep going .so every group maybe finish with say ‘this is my question’,but the conversation doesn’t have to end. You can make a little challenging that way.Another common topic and actually a good topic for group work is current new stories. Something is going on if you like because in real life this something we talk about. Some people really are bored with that topic but some people think that’s very exciti ng or very interesting. If you do talk about the current news, make sure it’s current news, that’s why in textbooks we don’toften see this new story or that new story , we talk about because that’s old news. We don’t usually talk about last month’s or las t year’s news. In fact, we don’t even talk about Olympics that much in China now because it’s something in the past. So if you are going to talk about the news, watch the news and read the news that week and so that’s something that everybody will talk abo ut. This is another topics that if you are going to go abroad you can’t really prepare for, because you watch the news ,you read the news, you’ve learn all of the vocabularies in the new story, and you learn how to discuss fluently, and three weeks later you go abroad , and you think I really talk about the news, it’s old news. So news is something you really have to, if you talk about, it’s best to talk about new news, that’s we called news.Ok, in a group work, in a team work, be spontaneous, it’s also qu ite important, it’s important to be able to change, it’s important you don’t rehearse. And now, that leads me a third method, that’s also important, and that’s the method we called pair work or teamwork of two people. You don’t need a lot of people, you can do the thing in your dorm room with your roommate, and you can do it in the classroom. There are many different ways to do it, all of the teachers I know have different styles, some teachers just say ‘find a partner,’ that’s ok. Some people say the person sitting beside you now is your partner, some teachers will say ‘that’s your partner, you keep the same partner, and other teacher will change partners. I recommend some changes, because especially some students have high level in English, and these students can barely speaking English, high level students maybe will disappoint their partner. So it’s good to make some changes. But whether you talk about group work or pair work, you should have specific questions. And I get spontaneous because real life conversations are spontaneous. when I teach , I really give students a topic the week before, and a lot of students ask for that, they say ‘could you just give we a topic to talk about next group or pair work?’ occasionally I do that, but that is a reason that usually I don’t do that ,that is because when you really meet somebody, and you talk with friends, you don’t rehearse, you know if your friends meet you on the street, or you see friends in some place, in the coffee shop , you don’t just say, ‘ oh , I can’t talk to you now because I need a week to prepare a conversation. Or in real life you meet a foreigner, that you will use English, right? You meet foreigner on the street, and the foreigner says, ‘excuse me, could you tell me where the subway is?’ and you say ‘ah…..well, give me about a week to prepare my answer’, you can’t do that, so real English usually has no time to prepare. So ,in group work or in pair work, it’s ok if the teacher ,sometimes give you a topic before to prepare, but it’s also impo rtant to spend some time when the teacher doesn’t give you any clue as what the topics will be. And suddenly the teacher prepare a ppt , just tell you ‘talk about the question ’ or answer the question right now.’ and in the beginning it maybe a little unco mfortable, but after students get used to doing that their English will improve quickly. One of the most important things is ,of course, stick with English ,whatever you do, whatever the topic is , whatever the method is, don’t allow yourself to speak any Chinese . And in my classes, we have a policy that all of my students know, ‘zero Chinese’. Thank you!。

Can We Make Fiends?Today we‟ll learn how to make a proper introduction. I found that many students know how to speak , many students are very fluent in their English after the conversation starts, but many of them don‟t know how to actually start the conversation. So we‟re g oing to talk about how to give a proper introduction. And there are two kinds of introductions .One is how to introduce two other people to each other and the other is how to introduce yourself to a person. There are actually two ways, the way to introduce yourself. Sometimes it‟s a natural situation. For examples, in a business meeting, a church, a class or even at someone‟s home, it‟s very natural to introduce yourself. But a lot of students especially in China they want to practice English with foreigners. And when they go out, they are not in a natural starting for a conversation and they really want to know if I see a foreigner and I don‟t know that person, how can I introduce myself to that person. So we‟re going to talk about that today. Most importan t thing is it‟s done naturally. You have to learn how to approach somebody and you learn to kown how to begin a conversation without scaring them away. Sometimes that happens. I have a lot of Chinese people come up open to wanna talk to me. And frankly it did scare me away. In some cases and some where we‟re very good, so we‟ll talk about that. Most students, maybe most people in China know how to say hello. In fact, everywhere I go, I hear people say hello, hello, hello. Ifyou have a chance to walk with me on the street of China, you would hear that in the background. People say hello and it‟s very strange. You don‟t start with that. So what we need to know is when should we say hello, and what situations should we say hello and when should we use otherth ings. When you see somebody and you wanna talk to them, don‟t just shout hello. That makes some feel very uncomfortble. Don‟t just walk up to stranger and grab them and say …Can we make friends?‟and that actually happened to me before in China. And it does n‟t make you feel like you wanna make friends. So when you see somebody, you wanna have a conversation with them. One of the first things you need to do is look at them and see if they appear busy, like he‟s walking really fast or something like that. Don‟t make them stop. If you wanna introduce yourself to a complete stranger. It‟s much better there‟s a natural situation or they don‟t have anything else to do. For example, standing a line in Mcdonald‟s, sitting on a subway or on the public bus, they don‟t have anything else to do. And that‟s a really good opportunity to talk to somebody. But against, they look busy, they‟re carrying their briefcase, they‟re in a hurry, they look they‟re late. Don‟t stop them. Don‟t even bother them. Now, one of the things you will encounter in China is some of the foreigners come here have to come to study Chinese. And they prefer talking to you in Chinese. So when you see them, you say …hi‟, they may say“你好”. And they may continue the conversation in Chinese.If that happen s, don‟t bother them with English. Don‟t force them to do that, OK?When you speak to them in Chinese, you‟re helping them, and they will join that, who knows. That could develop into a friendship and later you maybe practice English with them. I acturally had that happened to me when I first came to China and I was working in a small school. I remember many many times, I want to study, I want to read my Chinese textbooks, and in my school, in that school, I was the only foreign teacher, so you can imagine, everybody wanna practice English with me. So the only way that I could practice Chinese was to take my textbook, get on a bus and go into the city, but almost everytime that happened, I would sit on the bus studying my Chinese book and someone would sit besides me and say …Excuse me, can I practice English with you?‟ And it is not a good way to start a friendship. So if they want to practice Chinese with you, you can let them do that, OK? It‟s good to start with a natural reason for the conversation. When y ou speak to someone in Chinese, you don‟t just walk up to every stranger and start talking unless there‟s a good reason. You may scare them away if you just suddenly frown their face. So the best way is to have a reason. If they look like they need help, you see some people, they‟re looking at a map or they‟re looking around, they are looking like they are lost. The really good opportunity to go up and simply say …Is there anything I can help you?‟or‟Can I help you find something?‟ And even more natural sit uation is when you need help. Ifind Chinese people who are not from Beijing or I live now come over to me and ask me …How do you get to the subway station? How do you get to the zoo?‟ sometimes using Chinese, sometimes using English. Maybe you can ask them a question. So that would be OK,too. But just make sure that‟s natural situation that works much better. Don‟t start, and I heard Chinese people do this, it‟s really not good to start we simply say …May I have your name?‟ That would scare them away. They would probably think it‟s none of your business. You can start with this‟ Where are you from?‟ A lot of Chinese students ask me, they say …Michael, when you meet somebody, what you say first besides hello or hi?‟ It‟s best to start with eye contact, look at them and if they don‟t look back, they‟re probably too busy to talk. So begin with eye contact and smile, if they look back at you, they have eye contact with you, I contact and they smile, the door is open and you can continue, if not, don‟t continue. But what the first thing you can ask about , let me start with something I prefer you don‟t start with, that is‟Why did you come to China?‟ I have had complete stranger simply walk up to me and say …Hello!‟ If I say hello back, they would say …Why did you come to China?‟ That makes us feel like we should not be in China. So don‟t start with asking them why living in China. Now when you get to the name part, the best part thing is to give your name first. You can say …Hi, my name is Michael, my name is John, my name is Mary.‟ And then if they offer to give their name back,then something has started, if they don‟t, just drop it. Don‟t try to continue one of them the first questions I ask people, because even though I‟m a foreigner, when I see foreigners in Ch ina, I like to know, you know, where are they from and things like that. So my first question is just simply …Where are you from?‟After of course hello, the smile and the eye contact. But I like to say where are you from. It‟s a natural question, it‟s a normal question , it doesn‟t make them feel uncomfortble and what I like about this question is it can lead into a longer conversation. For example, if I say where are you from and someone says ‟I‟m fiom Germany.‟ I can say …Oh, I heard that‟s a beatiful cou ntry. Can you tell me about Germany?‟ or someone says …I‟m from Chicago.‟ You can say …Oh, are you a fan of Chicago Bulls?‟or …The Chicago Bull is doing well this season.‟ a lot of things like that. So if you plan to meet people from other countries, it would really be good for you to study a little bit geography or something or you have something in common. I find that I can start conversations very easily with people if I can think of something we have in common or something I know about them or their pla ce. So the moment that I say to the Chicago person‟Are you a Chicago?‟ ‟Chicago Bulls‟ fan?‟ They are open for a conversatin, they can‟t wait to tell me about Chicago Bulls. So sometimes conversations start with that. I‟ve actually srarted a conversation j ust by seeing something. For example, a T-shirt and has a name of university andmaybe I know someone who attends there or I know a professor there and I can say …Oh, do you know proffessor so and so.‟ Or OK, that university is in a very warm place so you must be very cold for you being here in Beijing or something like that. So look for opportunities and they‟re there right friends of you. After you give your name and the other person give you their name, you can simply say …Nice to meet you.‟ or something like that. Now we‟re going to talk about introducing two people to each other. They don‟t know each other.--…Hello, Michael.‟--…Hi, Bill, this is my friend, Crystal.‟--…Crystal, this is Bill.‟--…Nice to meet you!‟--…Nice to meet you, too!‟So when we introduce two people, there are many different things we can say depending on our relationship to them. For example, you can say …John, this is my friend, Mary.‟‟Mary, this is my coworker, John.‟ If one of the friends is coworker, sometimes you may be intruducing a foreign friend, for example you may say …Hi, Bill, these are my classmates Lily, Susan and Grace. This is my friend from Austrilia, Bill.‟or‟ my Austrilian friend Bill.‟ Whatever you do if you‟re intruducing a foreign friend.Don‟t say this is m y foreign friend. It sounds a little rude in our cultures , better if we just say …He‟s my friend.‟ or …He‟s my friend from Austrilia.‟ or …Where he happens to be?‟ Whenever you make an introduction of yourself or of two other people. The most important thing is just be natural and be yourself. And who knows, after that, a real friendship may develop. In our next lecture we‟ll talk about chatting with friends.。
