Speaking the Same language
There is an argument(争论) going on in many schools. It’s about what language or languages are spoken in classrooms.
Some people argue that because this is America, only English should be spoken in schools. Others argue that America is a melting pot. And if students are able to speak more than one language, that should be accepted in classrooms.
We asked students in New York city, what they thought. Here’s what they said.
Should English be the only language spoken in American classrooms?
YES
Pedro Rodriguez: Even though you may want to speak your native language, you should learn and speak only English in school. It is very important. It’s the most popular language in the world. If you live here, you should speak it.
Gisell Mata: How can people expect to communicate in this country if they can’t speak English? School is the best place to start. I think if you speak and write only English in school, you will learn it quicker and be able to speak it very well in a short time.
NO
Xiomarah Veras: I think people should learn English in school, but they shouldn’t be required to speak only English. It should be up to students and teachers to decide what they speak and learn. For people just learning English, it can be easier if they are allowed to speak their native language in class too.
Yessenia Ortiz: I think if English is introduced to people slowly, they will want to speak it more. If they are in this country, they will want to learn English. But it you tell them it is the only language they can speak in school, it will make them angry and frustrated(沮丧的).

The fighting against smoking has continued since I took office. I’ve done everything in my power to protect our children from harm. We’ve worked to make their streets and their schools safer, and to give them something positive to do after school before their parents get home. We’ve worked to teach our children tha drugs are dangerous, illegal and wrong.
Today I want to talk to you about the historic opportunity we now have to prot ect our nation’s children from an even more deadly threat: smoking, drugs and fires combined. This is a national tragedy(悲剧) that every American should be honor-bound to help prevent. For more than five years we’ve worked to stop our children from smoking before they start, launching(发动) a nationwide campaign(运动) to educate them about the dangers of smoking to reduce their access to tobacco products, and to severely restrict(限制) tobacco companies from advertising to young people. If we do these, we’ll cut teen smoking by almost half over the next five years. That means if we act now, we have it in our

When my father was dying, I traveled a thousand miles from home to be with him in his last days. It was far more heartbreaking than I’d expected, one of the most difficult and painful times in my life. After he passed away, I stayed alone in his apartment. There were so many things to deal with. It all seemed endless. I was lonely.
I hated the silence of the apartment.
But one evening the silence was broken. I heard crying outside. I opened the door to find a little cat on the steps. He was thin and poor. He looked the way I felt. I brought him inside and gave him a can of fish. He ate it and then almost immediately fell sound asleep.
The next morning I checked with neighbors and learned that the cat had been abandoned by his owner who’d moved out. So the little cat was there all alone just like I was. As I walked back to the apartment, I tried to figure out what to do with him. Having something else to take care of seemed like the very last thing I needed. But as soon as I opened the apartment door he came running and jumped into my arms. It was clear at that moment that he had no intention of going anywhere else. I started calling him Willis, in honor of my father’s best friend.
From then on, things grew easier. With Willis in my lap, time seemed to pass much more quickly. When the time finally came for me to return home I had to decide what to do about Willis. There was absolutely no way I would leave without him.

第一节:阅读表达(每题2分,共10分)
My husband and I travel a lot. We had a horse, a wonderful horse called Dusty. We were out of town when a one-hundred-mile horse race went right past the road in front of my house. My horse decided that she wanted to compete in the race. So she jumped over the fence and left quickly.
The next day my husband and I came home. We found a note on the front door from the police. It said that my horse had gone back to the barn(牲口棚) on the other side of town. She had been born there eighteen years before. So we drove there. It was a lovely old farm. It was owned now by people I didn’t know.
The new owners were a man, his wife, and their children, two little girls aged seven and five. We saw Dusty was in the barn. When the little girls had gotten up that morning, they had started screaming, their father said. That was because of the top of the hill, with the sun rising, was this beautiful horse. They attracted her to the barn. They spent the day brushing her and treating her a lot.
The seven-year-old girl turned to me. She said, “Can I ride her before you take her back?” I said yes. And then I went to a local grocery store and bought a bottle of apple juice. When I returned, they told me they had always wished for a horse. But their parents really didn’t have the money for one.
I told them I was going to give them Dusty. And I wanted them to make a vow. Someday when they were grown up, they each would find a littl girl – a little girl they didn’t know – and give her some very special gift that she had always wanted.
