Sometimes, life reminds us where we’ve been and shows us where we’re going.
It’s midnight and I’m standing in the kitchen of am empty old house.
After 12 years in Las Vegas, my husband and I recently moved back to Portland, where we each raised our children years ago.
Last week, I packed my car and moved into my old house. There was a time in my life

After my kids grew up, we lost their dad to cancer and I lived here alone for seven years. And then I remarried and left here.

So here I am, getting ready to move back in.
I’ve been sleeping in a bed we bought for the guest room and eating at a small table in the kitchen. That’s the only furniture(家具)in the house.
I take breaks to play baseball with my young grandsons. Life is a lot like baseball: a serious game for serious players. My grandchildren are too young to know that yet. They just want to have fun.

We usually think that garbage (垃圾) is useless and dirty. However, an art exhibition (展览) in 2019 proves that “useless” things can actually be helpful.
Dear Pretty Rubbish, an art event organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWFN) and digital media art company Blackbow, was held in Beijing. It looked at wasteful consumption (消耗) and asked questions about the relationship between our lifestyles and our garbage.
“We hope that everyone who visited the show can think about how ‘useless things’ are produced, why they are tossed out, and whether ‘useless things’ are really useless,” said Cao Yujia, the design director at Blackbow.
The organizers said that all the raw (未经加工的) materials for the exhibition were collected from community garbage cans.
Artists Zhou Yuxuan and Liu Yifan collected nylon cable ties (尼龙扎带), LED lights and beverage (饮料) bottles from designers’ workshops to create a work where plastics, in the shape of cells, “grow” in a corner. There, the lights blink (闪烁) regularly to imitate (模仿) “breathing”. When people walk near it, the work responds by forming light patterns, as if communicating with the visitors.
Speaking about the work, Zhou said, “It’s like some kind of communication between humans and plastics.”
Plastic has a life longer than almost any creature, taking centuries to break down. Though people blame plastics for damage (损害) to the environment, they are a big part of our daily lives.
“So we want to ask the question: Although the damage continues, is there a way for humans to reconcile (和解) with plastics?” said Zhou.
8.What is the purpose of “Dear Pretty Rubbish”?
A.To get people to think about the relationship between lifestyles and garbage.
B.To get people to realize the importance of not using plastics.
C.To show how to break down plastic products effectively.
D.To show how to recycle different types of useless things around home.
9.Which phrase can take the place of the underlined phrase “tossed out”?
A.worked out B.thrown away C.used up D.put off 10.What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?
A.Artists who collected materials from garbage cane.
B.One of the artworks at the exhibition.
C.Ways to turn “useless things” into different shapes.
D.Communication between artists and visitors at the exhibition.
11.Which word can best describe the art event?
A.Wasteful.B.Balanced (平衡的).C.Creative.D.Disgusting (令人厌恶的).
In our everyday life, we take many things for granted(认为……理所应当). Being able to see is one of them. However, not everyone in the world has good vision(视力).
The World Health Organization(WHO) has released(发布) its World Report on Vison. It says that 65 million people could get their vision back with a cataract operation(白内障手术), but cannot get one because they have little or no healthcare where they live. In addition, over 800 million people have trouble doing everyday activities because they don’t have enough money to buy a pair of glasses.
For example, there are thousands of nearsighted(近视的) African drivers who have difficulty seeing people walking across the road. This makes it dangerous for them to drive. And there are farmers in Bolivia who find it hard to see their ripe(成熟的) beans because of cataracts. This means they can’t harvest as many beans.
This is mainly a problem in low-income countries, such as western and eastern sub-Saharan(撒哈拉沙漠以南的) Africa, according to the report. A lack(缺少) of eye care services is one of the main reasons for this.
In southern Asia and other places around the world, there are still some cultural barriers(障碍) when trying to get glasses. In some places, people believe wearing glasses will make one’s eyes worse. In other places, when kids start wearing glasses, their grandparents will say they are for rich people and not for village boys or girls, Public Radio International reported. These beliefs and attitudes must change before more kids can get glasses and improve their vision.
12.What is the World Report that the WHO recently released about?
A.Cataract operations around the world.B.Vision problems around the world. C.Eye care services around the world.D.Types of glasses around the world. 13.What do the examples of African drivers and Bolivian farmers show?
A.People with poor vision face many difficulties.B.Too much work can cause vision problems.
C.People with cataracts will go blind.D.There is no eye care in African countries.
14.Why do people in southern Asia still have problems getting glasses?
A.Because only rich people can afford to buy glasses.
B.Because wearing glasses can make their eyes worse.
C.Because wearing glasses goes against their cultural beliefs.
D.Because wearing glasses makes them look ugly.
15.What can we learn from the story?
A.Only poor people have eye problems.
B.Eye health is a big problem in poor countries.
C.People can do little to improve their eyesight.
D.WHO will help some countries deal with vision problems.

六、多任务混合阅读
阅读短文,根据要求完成文后的题目。

When I was a teenager, I did a six-week summer learning program at a college. It helped kids get a taste of what college is like. We had classes in the morning and the evenings were filled with fun activities. We did have a break in the afternoons, however. One afternoon, my friend Claude and I found an old basketball. We went to an outdoor basketball court (球场) for a game of one-on-one.
At the time, Claude was taller than me. He was also better at basketball. I fell behind fast. I didn’t give up, though, so I drove hand to the basket and missed it! The ball bounced off the rim (从篮筐弹回) and I jumped up to catch it. Just as I was about to catch it, I saw an elbow (肘部) above my face.
As Claude caught the ball, his elbow came down hard, right into my eye. I saw stars everywhere. The pain was terrible. Claude kept saying “sorry” over and over. I laughed through the pain.
I spent the next few days walking around with a black eye, but it was worth it. For years afterward, I got a laugh whenever I told the story and joked about Claude’s elbows of death.
In this life, we all get an elbow to the eye sometimes. Our plans fail. Things work against us. Our ups become downs. When this happens, it’s best to face it with laughter and forgiveness (原谅). In this way, you can turn your pain to joy and you can learn and grow. 41.What was the six-week summer learning program at a college for? (no more than 11 word)

It is comfortable for us to study in such a clean environment. Thirdly, it's also a good idea to help pick up litter in our neighborhood. This can help us become more responsible.
