Fading beauty
She is widely seen as proof that good looks can last for ever. But, at nearly 500 years of age, time is catching up with the Mona Lisa.
The health of the famous picture, painted by Leonardo Da Vinci in 1505, is getting worse by the year, according to the Louvre Museum (卢浮宫博物馆) where it is housed. “The thin, wooden panel on which the Mona Lisa is painted in oil has changed shape since experts checked it two years ago,〞 the museum said. Visitors have noticed changes but repairing the world’s most famous painting is not easy. Experts are not
sure about the materials the Italian artist used and their current chemical state. Nearly 6 million people go to see the Mona Lisa every year, many attracted by the mystery of her smile. “It is very interesting that when you’re not looking at her, she seems to be smiling, and then you look at her and she stops,〞 said Professor Margaret Livingstone of Harvard University. “It’s because direct vision is excellent at picking up detail, but less suited to looking at shadows. Da Vinci painted the smile in shadows.〞
However, the actual history of the Mona Lisa is just as mysterious as the smile. Da Vinci himself loved it so much that he always carried it with him, until it was eventually sold to France’s King Francis I in 1519.
In 1911, the painting was stolen from the Louvre by a former employee, who took it out of the museum hidden under his coat. He said he planned to return it to Italy. The painting was sent back to France two years later.
During World War II, French hid the painting in small towns to keep it out of the hands of German forces.
Like many old ladies, the Mona Lisa has some interesting stories to tell.

62. What makes her smile so mysterious according to Professor Livingston?

B. The way she smiles.

Like fine food, good writing is something we approach with pleasure and enjoy from the first taste to the last. And good writers, like good cooks, do not suddenly appear full-blown(充分开展的). Quite the opposite, just as the cook has to undergo a particular training, mastering the skills of his trade, the writer must sit at his desk and devote long hours to achieving a style in his writing, whatever its purpose is schoolwork, matters of business, or purely social communication. You may be sure that the more painstaking the effort, the more effective the writing is, and the more rewarding.
There are still some faraway places in the world where you might find a public scribe(抄写员) to do your business or social writing for you, for money. There are a few managers who are lucky enough to have the service of that rare kind of secretary who can take care of all sorts of letters writing with no more than a quick note to work from. But for most of us, if there is any writing to be done, we have to do it ourselves. We have to write school papers, business papers or home papers. We are constantly called on to put words to papers. It would be difficult to count the number of such words, messages, letters, and reports put into mails or delivered by hand, but the daily figures must be extremely large. What is more, everyone who writes expect,, or at least hopes whatever he writes will be read, from first word to last, not just thrown into letter-to-be-read files or into a wastepaper basket. This is the reason we bend our efforts toward learning and practicing the skills of interesting,
effective writing.
68. In this message, good writing is compared to fine food because ______________.
A. both are enjoyable
B. both are hard to learn
C. both are necessary to life
D. both take a long time to prepare
69 According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.Writing skills are less important than experience.
B.A good writer should have his own way of writing.
C.A good writer should learn to write all kinds of articles.
D.The more efforts one makes, the more money one can earn.
70. The author thinks that the most important reason for us to practice writing skills is _________.
A. to earn our living
B. to attract others to read
C. to do daily reports easily
D. to become good at writing.
71. The purpose of the author in writing this passage is to ____________.
A. comment and blame
B. introduce and describe
C. explain and persuade
D. interest and inform

My son and I were trying to sell the house we had repaired but in the barn(谷仓)there were batsand they would not leave. The barn was their home. They told us so in their own way. They hung there in the barn and seemed determined to stay for the season. “Don't worry about it, Dad,〞Patrick said. “They keep down the mosquitoes.〞Unfortunately they also kept the buyers away. When we had asked a person to sell the house for us he had refused to show it because of the bats. “Bats are popular〞, Patrick comforted me.“They're ecological(生态学的)〞.“Isn't there a machine you can buy that produces high frequency sounds to keep bats away?〞“I don't know,〞said Patrick. “But I like bats, and whoever buys this house will probably like them too.〞Probably? I hated that word. “How many bats arethere ,anyway?〞“I counted about 90 last night,〞said Patrick. “They were dropping out from under the e dge of the roof.〞“You mean there are more—outside?〞“They're everywhere, Dad. But look at it this way. When the cold weather comes, they’ll be off to Mexico. Maybe in the spring we can close the barn to keep them out. Don't worry about it,〞 he said for th e hundredth time. “It's not a problem.〞
The bat expert I called was even more active than Patrick. “I think you've got a large number there,〞he said in wonder, “I’ve been trying to attract bats to our house for 25 years. A single bat eats up his weight in mosquitoes and black flies three times every night. You're a very lucky man.〞 I offered to share my luck with him. He could take them away. “Bats have a remarkable homing instinct(本能),〞he said. “They'd fly straight back even if I transported them 100 mile s. Once they have settled, you can't stop them from coming back.〞 I was silent.
Finally we managed to rent the house to a young family, who were also interested in buying it. “What about the bats?〞 I said to Patrick.
“Oh, they love the bats,〞 he said. No mosquitoes. No black flies. It's one of the things that attracted them.“Do you think they will really buy the bouse?〞
“probably.〞 Probably? Well,if they do, I suppose I'll have to admit that I was wrong. “You mean you're going to eat your words?〞
“Yes, I am.〞

Chongqing---My Hometown
As the youngest municipality, my hometown Chongqing is a city filled with energy and charm.
Chongqing, surrounded by the Yangtze River and Jialing River, lies in the southwestern China. The city covers an area of 83,403 square kilometers, with a population of 3235320 thousand. The climate here is damp with a lot of fog, so it is known as “Fog City〞 in China. The weather is unbearably hot in summer. Thus, Chongqing, along with Wuhan and Najing, is acknowledged as “Three Furnaces〞. In winter, it rains much, but the temperature is not very low.
Chongqing is famous for its hilly slopes and spicy food. Travelers from all around China come here to try the“Hot Pot〞, and also enjoy the beautiful night view, which is another feather of the city.
