In many Asian countries, big families are 16. Families usually have three generations living in the same 17. When parents are busy with work, grandparents help to do housework and 18 the children.
While in most western countries, many people prefer nuclear families, or families that have only parents and children. During the 19, working parents send their children to their grandparents’ home or a day-care center. And after work, they pick up the children and go home. Some families are even DINKs.
In addition to structure, the responsibilities which parents have to their children can also be 20.
In China, many parents take care of their children all the way into adulthood. It’s normal for parents to 21 for children’s college tuition (学费). After graduation, many parents also help find a job for their children, or 22 an apartment for them.
In western countries, however, children are supposed to be quite 23 after they reach the age of 18. Most parents won’t pay for their children’s college education. Young people 24 have a part-time job or turn to the government for help. After graduation, if they can find a 25, parents usually won’t cover their cost of living any longer.

Even the greatest products might have some design
problems. The iPhone is such an example. Recently a new
bug (故障) has been found in Apple’s FaceTime system. This
problem has caused Apple a lot of trouble. However, to
everyone’s surprise, the one who found the bug is a
14-year-old child named Grant Thompson! What an amazing
thing it is! Apple is going to pay the American teenager.
The bug means that Apple users could listen in to group chats in the video-calling service. It also means an iPhone could be turned into a live microphone while users are using Group FaceTime, with callers being able to activate (激活) another person’s microphone from faraway places even before the person has accepted or refused the call.
It has not yet been known how much money the teenager and his family will receive from Apple. But according to a report, Apple also plans to give him another gift towards his education.
Grant Thompson and his mother said they had tried to get in touch with the company about the problem for more than a week before Apple turned off the group-chat feature (群聊功能). Apple has created an iPhone update (更新) to fix the bug. The software change became available to install on Thursday as a part of Apple’s iOS 12 system. The new version includes a message saying it “provides important security updates and is recommended for all users”.
The bug wasn’t only found in iPhones. All devices that allow Group FaceTime, including iPads and Macs, have a similar problem. So they all need their own software update.

Thousands of years ago, people didn’t know the Earth moved. They thought the Sun moved across the sky. The Greek god Helios was said to drive the Sun across the sky with his chariot (战车). But now, with astronauts’ exploration of space and scientists’ study of planets, the way people think has changed. Nowadays, it is the Sun that drives a “chariot” around the sky.
What do I mean by this? Well, quite simply, there is now a plane (or “chariot”) that is powered by the Sun. It has special parts on its wings. These parts absorb (吸收) power from the Sun. They absorb so much power that the plane can still fly even at night. In Greek mythology, Helios had to take a break at night. It seems that we're finally even more powerful than the god.
This plane is called Solar Impulse. It will fly across the US in May. This is very important for the future of the world.
Why is solar energy so good for us? Well, other kinds of energy are known to cause lots of problems. If you live in a developing country, you've probably noticed the pollution. It's getting more and more serious these years. This is caused by burning coal and gas to make energy. The heat and chemicals created by burning these things give us power. However, our living environment is getting worse and worse. If we use power from the Sun, we don't have to burn anything and there won't be any pollution.
Solar energy is not completely ready yet. It needs to be improved. But the best thing about it is that, unlike coal and gas, it doesn't run out. The Solar Impulse plane could keep flying forever. Of course, the Sun's light will finally run out too one day, but not for another 5 billion years. That's a pretty long flight. So we don't have to worry too much.
()38. The Solar Impulse plane _____________.
A. cannot fly at night
B. is powered by chemicals
C. is driven by solar energy
D. was made in the US
()39. According to the passage, what is the cause of pollution in developing countries?
A. Burning coal and gas.
B. Cutting down trees.
C. The heavy traffic.
D. Too much population.
()40. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean?
A. Solar Impulse moves very quickly.
B. Solar Impulse will be used for a long time.
C. It takes much time to get Solar Impulse going.
D. Solar Impulse has a long way to go to take the place of the Sun.
()41. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. The story of the Greek god Helios.
B. How developing countries make use of energy.
C. The uses and advantages of solar energy.
D. The disadvantages of burning coal and gas.

The world's population is growing rapidly. By the year 2050 it's said that the world's population will reach nine billion. At the same time, there is no doubt that people in developed countries have a higher living standard. But there is an interesting question: what will happen if people in poorer countries raise their living standard and need more meat in their diet? Imagine trying to feed nine billion people with enough meat. In fact, it's simply impossible.
Australian writer, Julian Cribb, explains the challenges the world faces in feeding nine billion people by the year 2050. He says there is a major problem in the present food system in the developed world. As more and more people move towards city centers, they know less and less where their food comes from. Most of them think food simply grows on supermarket shelves, and they don't consider the environmental effects of food production. Food has many hidden cost: huge amounts of water, energy use and land degradation (退化). Consumers add their own costs by simply throwing away a lot of food. The figures (数字) for food waste in the world are staggering.
To solve this problem of public ignorance (忽视) about food, Cribb suggests that food should be taught as a subject at primary schools. This would help the future generation deal with the world’s coming food challenges better.
Cribb offers other solutions and suggestions as well. One is to increase the funding (资金) for agriculture science. He suggested organic fanning should be understood on a scientific basis, changing people’s thinking to a new form of “environmental agriculture” to get the very best out of organic farming systems. He says we should stop wasting food and learn how to grow food more cheaply. We should use less water, as water is one of the main inputs into food production. Cribb also suggests eating more fruit and vegetables, because it costs much to raise chickens, sheep, cows etc. and provide meat for people.
()42. What is the major problem of the food system in developed countries according to Paragraph 2?
A. The increasing ignorance about the ways of food production.
B. An increasing number of people moving to city centers.
C. Food production does no harm to the environment.
D. The cost of food production is increasing.
()43. What is the meaning of the underlined word “staggering”in the third paragraph? A. Confusing. B. Surprising.
C. Interesting.
D. Pleasing.
()44. Which of the following may the writer disagree with?
A. The public should save food and save water.
B. Organic agriculture costs a lot of resources.
C. More money should be used for agricultural science.
D. People should eat less meat but more fruit and vegetables.
()45. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The effects of agriculture on the environment.
B. The effects of the world’s population on agriculture.
C. Food problems in the future and some solutions.
D. The development of agriculture in the future.

Dear Mr. Principal,
I am Li Ming. I’m writing to ask permission from you to help Xiaomei, our classmate from Class 1, Grade 9.
Xiaomei is from a poor family. What’s worse, her father suffers from a serious illness and her family is now in need of money. We plan to help her by holding a fair to sell old books. The fair will be held after school from this Tuesday to Friday in front of the school library. We will work together to raise as much money as possible for her. Then we will give the money to Xiaomei and visit her father in the hospital. We will try to raise his spirits by telling him some jokes and giving him support.
We sincerely hope that we can get your permission.
Yours sincerely,
Li Ming。
