三、阅读理解
18. According to a latest research, shoppers in the UK are spending less money on toilet paper to save money. Penny pinching UK consumers choose cheaper products from discounters such as Aldi and Lidi rather than luxury alternatives.
This has wiped 6% off the value of the soft tissue paper market iii the UK. It has shrunk from £ 1.19 billion in 2011 to £ 1.12 billion in 2015, according to a new report from marker research company Mintel. Furthermore, the future of the market looks far from rosy, with sales expected to fall further to £ 1.11 billion in 2016.
In the last year alone, despite an increase in the UK population and a subsequent rise in the number of households, sales of toilet paper fell by 2%, with the average household reducing their toilet roll spending from £ 43 in 2014 to £ 41 in 2015.
Overall, almost three in five people say they try to limit their usage of paper, including facial tissue and kitchen roll, to save money. ‘‘Strength, softness and thickness remain the leading indicators of toilet paper quality, with just a small pan of consumers preferring more luxurious alternatives, such as those with flower patterns or perfume.” said Mintel analyst Jack Duckett. “These extra feanu.es are considered unnecessary by the majority of shoppers, which probably reflects how these types of products are typically more expensive than regular toilet paper, even when on special offer.”
While consumers are spending less on toilet paper, they remain particular about this product, in theory at least, when it comes to paper quality. Top of Britons’ toilet paper wish list is so ftness (57%) followed by strength (45%) and thickness (36%).
One in 10 buyers rank toilet rolls made from recycled paper among their top considerations, highlighting how overall the environment is much less of a consideration for shoppers than product quality. In a challenge for manufactures, 81% of paper product users said they would consider buying recycled toilet tissue if it were comparable in quality to standard paper.
32. The market sales of toilet paper have decreased because .
A. Britons have cut their spending on it.
B. its prices have gone up over the years.
C. its quality has seen marked improvement.
D. Britons have developed the habit of saving.
33. What does the author think of the future of the tissue paper marker in the UK?
A. It will expand in time.
B. It will continue the tendency of decrease.
C. It will experience ups and downs.
D. It will recover as population grows.
34. What does Jack Duckett say about toilet paper?
A. Special offers would promote its sales.
B. Consumers are loyal to certain brands.
C. Luxurious features add much to the price.
D. Consumers have a variety to choose from.
35. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. More and more Britons buy recycled toilet paper to protect the environment.
B. Toilet paper producers are facing a great challenge in promoting its sales.
C. Toilet paper producers compete with one another to improve product quality.
D. Environmental protection is not much of a concern when Britons buy toilet paper.
参考答案:
32-35 ABCD
19. You’re sitting on the train home and the person opposite you yawns(打哈欠). Suddenly, you’re yawning with him, though you’re not tired.
This phenomenon confused scientists for years until a recent study found that people tend to sympathize with fellow humans. Supporting this claim was the discovery that those children who were unable to form normal emotional ties with others did not experience contagious(有感染力的) yawning, which showed that humans communicate regularly with out words.
Hugo Critchley, a neuroscientist, has conducted an experiment recently, which will prove that happiness and
sadness can spread like the common cold. According to Critechley, our mind and body are in constant exchange about how we’re feeling. “Emotions are closely linked with states of internal(内部的) responses,” he explained. “There are also more visible changes in our gestures and facial expression. When we’re in a group, these signals can spread to another person. For example, there’s the obvious tendency to smile when smiled at and there are less obvious changes that reflect emotions of surprise, anger or sadness such as a change in our heart rate and blood pressure.
Hugo Critchley further explained, “Our bodies synchronies and when we like the other person, we ever copy his behavior. Next time you chat with a friend, take note of how you’re sitting—it’s pretty likely that you will be the same. Scientists believe it’s our way of telling each other that we’re partners. Through body language, humans give each other very subtle(微妙的) but clear signa ls that show emotions.”
So, what lessons can we learn from this? “Spend time with happy people— otherwise your health could suffer,” said Critchley. “When we’re sad, our body goes into fight or flight mode. But when we’re happy, our body works normally and we feel relaxed and positive. So we look bright, our skin glows, we feel healthy and it affects everyone around us.”
32. According to Hugo Critchley, ________.
A. emotions are as visible as facial expressions
B. we yawn more frequently when we have a cold
C. emotions are connected with states of internal responses
D. the change of blood pressure is not linked with the change of emotions.
33. The underlined word “synchronies” in Paragraph 4 means “________”.
A. move slowly
B. change rapidly
C. relax temporarily
D. respond accordingly
34. From the passage we can learn ________.
A. sadness is as contagious as happiness
B. anger is less contagious than friendliness
C. surprise is more contagious than smile
D. surprise is the most contagious among emotions
35. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?
A. Emotions have delicate influence on fellow humans.
B. Children like copying the actions of the fellow humans.
C. Scientists are still confused about contagious yawning
D. People tend to communicate more with body language.
