AA decreasing birthrate depends to a large extent on the availability and use of birth control and on high living levels that make the production of additional children to provide necessary and inexpensive labor unnecessary. Family planning is a national policy in many industrial countries, such as Japan and most of European countries. As a result, in most cases the birthrate has decreased. Many developing countries have followed the lead of India (which has since 1952 conducted an extensive, but not totally successful, birth control program) in trying to promote family planning as a national policy. These countries include China, Kenya, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, and Chile. In the United States, facts of the population question, such as birth control and abortion, are among the most bitterly debated subjects. The United States has disagreed strongly at times with the use of foreign aid appropriations (拨款) for family planning overseas and doing that is thought against human rights; family planning in the country is mainly run by private groups such as Planned Parenthood.A number of non-governmental organizations concerned with population growth have also appeared. Zero Population Growth, an educational group founded in 1970, aims to stop population growth, first in the United States and then in other countries.
ADo you know the toys below? They were once among the most popular toys.1960 — Etch A SketchFrench electrician Andre Cassagnes had the idea of a drawing toy with a joy stick, a glass screen, and aluminum (铝) powder. Using that idea, the Ohio Art Co. launched (推出) the Magic Screen in 1960, and you could erase the picture with a shake of your hands. You can still find the toy today.1964 — SuperBallWhat happens when you accidentally create a plastic ball that jumps? The toy company, Wham-O Inc., buys your idea and it ends up selling millions. That’s exactly what happened to Norman Stingley, a chemical engineer who came upon SuperBall. At one time, Wham-O had to produce over 170,000 balls a day to keep up with the demand. Unbelievably, the National Football Game named the Super Bowl game (a well-known American football game) after this jumping ball.1964 — G.I. JoeIn 1964, Hasbro toy company created G.I. Joe, a line of action figures designed to represent the 4 branches of the US Armed Forces — Action Soldier (Army), Action Sailor (Navy), Action Pilot (Air Force), and the Action Marine (Marine Corps). G.I. Joe was imagined as an excellent military unit devoted to defending citizens’ freedom against the evil persons. It has attracted the imagination of boys around the world.1965 — OperationAn unsteady hand is your downfall (败落的原因) in the game of Operation, which was invented by John Spinello, a student at the University of Illinois. Later, Spinello sold his right to the toy to a well-known toy designer Marvin Glass for a sum of $500. Operation is currently made byHasbro, with estimated sales of $40 million.1. Which toy has a relationship with the sports event?A. Etch A Sketch.B. SuperBall.C. G.I. Joe.D. Operation.2. Who probably are most interested in G.I. Joe?A. Those fond of arts.B. Those fond of construction.C. Those fond of brave soldiers.D. Those fond of kind doctors.3. If you want to play with Operation successfully, you should __________.A. keep your hand stableB. have better teamworkC. get Norman Stingley’s guidanceD. have a joy stick and a glass screenBAttention managers: the next time you need to inspire your team creatively, be more attentive to your employees’ feelings when you deliver negative feedback (反绩).Kim,who worked as a software engineer for Samsung after graduation from college, is familiar with having his creative work picked apart. “I personally hate hearing negative feedback as most people do and I wondered if it really improved my performance, particularly when it came to completing creative tasks.” In two studies, Kim found that negative feedback can help or prevent creativity. What is most important is where the criticism (批评) comes from. When creative professionals or participants received criticism from a boss or a peer, they tended to be less creative in their later work. Interestingly, if a person received negative feedback from an employee of lower rank, they became more creative. It makes sense that employees might feel threatened by criticism from their managers. Supervisors (监督员;管理者)have a lot of power in deciding promotions or pay raises. So negative feedback from a boss mi运it cause career (职业) anxiety. It also stands to reason that feedback from a co-worker might also be received as threatening. We often compete with our peers for the same promotions and chances. What Kim found most surprising was how criticism proved to improve supervisors throughlessons learned from negative feedback that came from their followers (employees that they manage).“But we tend to believe we shouldn’t criticize the boss,” says Kim. “In reality, most supervisors don’t detest negative feedback since they want to learn from it. Another reason is that they are in a natural power position and can deal with the discomfort of negative feedback better.”As for giving suggestions to employees, bosses should point out a follower’s poor performance or weak points in time. But they should keep their feedback specific to tasks. Explain how the point they’re discussing relates to only their task behavior, not to aspects of the person. Meanwhile, feedback receivers need to worry less when it comes to receiving criticism.4. What’s the motivation behind Kim’s study?A. To work on his essays for graduation.B. To have a better knowledge of criticism.C. To call for understanding between workers.D. To encourage a culture of criticism in the workplace.5. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4?A. What typical power supervisors possess.B. What feedback can cause career anxieties.C. How workers can have a good impression on bosses.D. Why certain criticism harms a person’s performance.6. What amazed Kim mostly in the study?A. Some people enjoy negative feedback.B. Employees are brave to criticize the boss.C Followers’ criticism may benefit managers.D. Many bosses sometimes struggle in their work.7. What does the underlined word “detest” in Paragraph 6 most probably mean?A. Hate.B. Understand.C. Discuss.D. Provide.CRecently according to a new research, humans have had a link to starches (含淀粉的食物) for up to 120,000 years — that’s more than 100,000 years longer than we’ve been able to plant them in the soil during the time of the Ice Age’s drawing to an end. The research is part of an ongoingstudy into the history of Middle Stone Age communities. An international team of scientists identified evidence of prehistoric starch consumption in the Klasies River Cave, in present-day South Africa. Analyzing small, ashy, undisturbed hearths (壁炉)inside the cave, the re-searchers found “pieces of burned starches” ranging from around 120,000 to 65,000 years old. It made them the oldest known examples of starches eaten by humans. The findings do not come as a complete surprise — but rather as welcome confirmation of older theories that lacked the related evidence. The lead author Cynthia Larbey said that there had previously only been genetic (基因的) biological evidence to suggest that humans had been eating starch for this long. This new evidence, however, takes us directly to the dinner table, and supports the previous assumption that humans, digestion genes gradually evolved in order to fit into an increased digestion of starch.Co-author Sarah Wurz said, “The starch remains show that these early humans living in the Klasies River Cave could battle against their tough environment and find suitable foods and perhaps medicines. And as much as we all still desire the tubers (块茎),these cave communities were grilling starches such as potatoes on their foot-long hearths. They knew how to balance their diets as well as they could, with fats from local fish and other animals.”As early as the 1990s, some researchers started to study the hearths in the Klasies River Cave. Scientist Hilary Deacon first suggested that these hearths contained burned plants. At the time, the proper methods of examining the remains were not yet available. We now know human beings have always been searching for their desired things.8. When did humans begin to farm starches?A. After the Ice Age.B. After the Middle Stone Age.C. About 20,000 years ago.D. About 100,000 years ago.9. According to the scientists, remains in the Klasies River Cave show thatA. South Africa once had rich soil to grow cropsB. hearths were widespread in early human historyC. early humans possibly drove away animals by fireD. settlers there might have used fire to cook starches10. What was the previous assumption of starches?A. Starch diet promoted food culture.B. Starch diet shaped humans’ evolution.C. Starches had a variety of functions.D. Starches offered humans rich nutrition.11. What can we learn about the early humans described by Sarah Wurz?A. They were smart and tough.B. They preferred plants to meat.C. They were generally very healthy.D. They got along with each other.DEveryone knows that to help lessen the ongoing climate crisis, we need to plant new trees. A paper recently published in Science predicts that our Earth could support an additional 9,000,000 sq km of forest, potentially hosting 500 billion trees that are able to absorb more than 200 billion tonnes of C〇2. It would be a serious help. The Earth’s land is 149,000,000 sq km. According to our study, when we take out glaciers (冰川)and deserts, we are left with 104,000,000 sq km. When we further take out cities, freshwater, forests, etc., we finally get 51,000,000 sq km of arable (适于耕种的)land badly needed to feed 7.5 billion human beings.Very few people are aware of the great complexity of the whole system. “Widespread use at the scale of millions of square kilometers globally of tree-planting and bioenergy crops (用于制造生物能源的农作物)planting,” reads an IPCC report, u could have potentially bad consequences for food security and land degradation (退化).” In other words, more widespread monoculture (单一栽培) and more bioenergy crops could degrade soil.Bioenergy now has a 50 per cent share of the world’s renewable energy consumption, according to expert Fatih Birol’s words:“as much as wind, solar and all others combined”. It’s good news, but not entirely. One reason is that rising ocean levels and deserts spreading are taking away more arable land. So we arrive at a tough choice. Should we use our spare soil for agriculture, reforestation or bioenergy?Firstly, when planning to use lots of spare land to grow trees, we should notice that last year,36,000 sq km of forest was cut down. So wouldn’t it be better to start by stopping cutting down forests altogether? Besides, animal farming takes up 77 per cent of the world’s arable land and provides us with 18 per cent of the calories. Shouldn’t we globally cut back on meat consumption? Lastly, modem bioenergy, which is made from non-food-crops, is already available. Shouldn’t we avoid first-generation biofuels, which are obtained from food crops?12. What does the Science paper predict?A. People will be more active in planting trees.B. The climate change will lessen in the future.C. Large quantities of trees can help handle C02.D. Trees will play a much bigger role in our daily life.13. What are the figures in Paragraph 2 mainly intended to show?A. Humans face a freshwater crisis.B. The Earths land has various functions.C. Forests take up a small part of the Earth’s land.D. The arable land is hard to feed the world’s population.14. What can be inferred from the IPCC report?A. Planting trees benefits bioenergy crops.B. More land can be used for growing bioenergy crops.C. The condition of plenty of land has been improved.D. Large scale of tree-planting may be a double-edged sword.15. What’s the last paragraph mainly about?A. How to properly use our spare soil.B. How to produce more trees and biofuels.C. Why to protect our environment.D. What to know about our role in nature.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

One of the places on his list for us to visit was a “rare violin shop”. We made our way down the crowded streets and stopped in front of a tall building. This building was not what I had pictured. I’d been imagining a street-level shop, open to the public, with some interesting and older violins on display. As we walked inside, we were greeted by a receptionist who asked if we had an appointment, since they were by appointment only. I wanted the ground to swallow me whole and was about to waive the visit. But my dad eagerly told them that no, and he sincerely explained that I played the violin with my high school orchestra and we would love to just pop inside and browse! The receptionist gave us an odd look but excused herself to talk to a well-dressed man. Luckily, the man told us that since he had no other appointments right now, he would love to give us a tour! The starting price for a violin here, we found out, was 10k. He showed us around a very private-feeling and swanky-looking condo (奢华的工作间), pointing at a room where he casually mentioned he would chat with Joshua Bell when he came by. My jaw was on the floor the entire time.At the end, the man picked up a Stradivarius and asked me to pizz a string while he held it. And he said,“Now you’ve played a Stradivarius.”I don’t remember the man’s name, but I’m so glad that he decided to show a no-appointment, non-customer around. He inspired me to continue pursuing my instrument after high school!4.Why did the author’s father take her to the violin shop?A.To buy a new violin for the school orchestra.B.To show support for the author’s hobby.C.To ask the receptionist for an appointment.D.To meet famous violinists.5.What does the underlined word “waive” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?A.Give up.B. Put off.C. Pay for.D. Prepare for.6.What can we infer about the man showing them around?A.He is highly educated.B. He is respectful but strict.C.He is friendly and considerate.D.He is good at making musical instruments.7.What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?A.To share her experience of learning about some wonderful violins.B.To show her appreciation for a man in a rare violin shop.C.To encourage readers to stick to their dreams.D.To tell the importance of communication.CMore than 90 per cent of global trade today is carried out via ships — about 53,000 merchant ships trading internationally. That number seems to increase dramatically. A 2019 study, led by researchersat McGill University in Canada, has predicted an increase in ocean traffic of anything between 240 and 1, 209 per cent by 2050. In preparation for this increase, scientists and engineers around the world are dealing with the difficult question of how to navigate (航行) more safely. On the west coast of the US, one such group has a single priority — whales. The region is home to not only busy international ports but also the rich feeding grounds of blue, humpback and fin whales. As a result of crossovers, ship strikes are thought to be one of the leading causes of death for whale populations.Dr Briana Abrahms, a research ecologist at NOAA Fisheries’ Southwest Fisheries Science Center, is developing an app that will allow managers and ship crews to be alerted (警觉的) to the probable location of blue whales. It is based on the group9 s new model which predicts whale movements based on oceanographic conditions. “Ocean conditions can change on a daily basis,” Abrahms explains. “We know what conditions the whales like, so every single day we can look at where those conditions are and predict where the whales will go.”Of course, knowing where the whales are is hardly relevant if captains ignore the information. Abrahms admits that voluntary slow-down schemes for large ships on the east coast of the US (slower ships being less likely to kill whales) have seen low levels of compliance (遵从). Her hope is that more accurate data will encourage owners and managers to respond. “Part of the reason we think for the low compliance is that there isn’t much confidence among the shipping industry. If you say 4 slow down between July and November’,the shipping industry doesn’t believe that there is actually a whale there. Many Germans are slow speakers, delivering five to six syllables in the same amount of time. Yet in any given minute, Italians and Germans transmit (传输)roughly the same amount of information, according to a new study.Scientists started with written texts from 17 languages, including English, Italian, Japanese, and Vietnamese. They calculated the information density of each language in bits. They found that Japanese, which has only 643 syllables, had an information density of about 5 bits per syllable, whereas English, with its 6949 syllables, had a density of just over 7 bits per syllable. Vietnamese, with its complex system of six tones, topped the charts at 8 bits per syllable.Next, the researchers spent 3 years recording 10 speakers from 14 of the 17 languages. Each participant read aloud 15 identical passages that had been translated into their mother tongue. After noting how long the speakers took to get through their readings, the researchers calculated an average speech rate per language, measured in syllables/second.Some languages were clearly faster than others. But when the researchers multiplied this rate by the bit rate to find out how much information was moved per second — they were shocked by the results. No matter how fast or slow, how simple or complex, each language gravitated toward an average rate of 39.15 bits per second. But why? Pellegrino and his colleagues suspect that the answer has everything to do with the limits imposed by our fragile biology — how much information our brains can take in or produce at any one time.De Boer, an evolutionary linguist who studies speech production at the Free University of Brussels, agrees that our brains are the bottleneck. That’s because, he says, the average person can listen to audio recordings sped up to about 120%, and still has no problems with comprehension. “It really seems that the bottleneck is in putting the ideas together.”12.Which language ranks first in terms of information density according to Paragraph 2?A.Italian.B. Vietnamese.C. English.D. Japanese.13.What can we know from the study?A.Japanese speakers convey more information in a fixed time.B.The number of syllables of a language may be changeable.C.Germans tend to transmit more information than Italians.D.Human speech may have a universal information transmission rate.14.What leads to the result of the finding?A.People’s fragile comprehension.B.Restriction of humans’ brain.rmation density.plexity of the language.15.What is the structure of the whole text?A. ①\②③\④⑤\⑥B.①②\③④\⑤⑥C. ①②\③\④⑤\⑥D. ①\②③④\⑤⑥第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

A woman held her phone tightly to her heart the way a church-goer might hold aBible. She was anxious to take a picture of an impressive bunch of flowers that sat not so far away, but first she had to get through a crowd of others pushing their way to do the same. The cause of this was Bouquets to Art,one of the most popular events at the de Young Museum in San Francisco.Flower sellers were asked to create flower arrangements that respond to pieces of art on display, from ancient carvings to contemporary sculptures. It's extremely attractive and also memorable,to the point that it has become a problem. In recent years, the de Young received more than a thousand complaints from people who felt that cell phones had spoiled their experience of the exhibit.institutions of fine art around the world face similar problems as the desire to take photographs becomes a huge attraction for museums,as well as something that upsets some of their patrons (资助人).So the de Young responded with a kind of compromise:carving out "photo free"hours during the exhibition's six-day run.One common complaint about the effect of social media on museum culture is that people seem to be missing out on experiences because they are so busy collecting evidence of them.A study recently published in the journal Psychological Science suggests there is some truth to this.It finds that people who keep taking photos of an exhibit and posting them on social media rather than simply observing it,have;a hard time remembering what they see.But the issue is complex for the professionals running museums.Linda Butler, the de Young's head of marketing and visitor experience, acknowledges that not everyone wants a museum to be "a photo-taking playland." a“weight problem”.To many people the cause is obvious (明显的):they eat too much. But scientific evidence(证据)does little to support this idea.Going back to America of1910,we find that people were thinner than today, yet they ate more food.In those days people worked harder physically, walked more, used machines much less, and didn’t watch television.Several modern studies, moreover, have shown that fatter people don’t eat more on average than thinner people.A1979study of3,545London office workers showed that fat people eat less than slim(苗条的)people.Studies also show that slim people are more active than fat people.A study by a research group at Stanford University found the following interesting facts:The more the man ran,the greater loss of the body fat.The more they ran,the greater increase in food intake. Thus, those who ran the most ate the most, yet lost the greatest amount of body fat.21.Nowadays many Americans have the problem that______.A.they are too slimB.they work too hardC.they are the Atlantic Ocean but we have many differences in our common language. We have examples of the same words having very d ifferent meanings, differing spellings of the same words as well as completely different words for the same things. Here are some examples.A cookie in the US is called a biscuit in the UK.A biscuit in the US is a small cake in the UK.Crisps in the UK,are known as chips, but we British people eat a plate of chips that you call fries in the US.In the UK,a pie can be made from either meat or fruit, while in the US pies are normally made from fruit;pot pies are made from meat. Most things are measured in grams and kilograms in the US,not pounds and ounces. One very obvious(明显的)difference is the side of the road we each choose to drive on.Petrol in the UK is gas in the US.The place where we fill up our cars,in the UK,is a garage;while in the US,it’s a gas station. The term garage is also used as a place to store your car next to or close by your house. In the UK we call a lorry what is known as a truck in the US.An elevator in the US is called a lift here, and the first floor in the US,is calle d the ground floor here,so many visitors get off on the wrong floor If we drink beer at meals, it may take away your appetite(食欲). It is important for us to eat our meal at the same time each day. But the Trust has been forced to post a warning on its website about public access to A&E. It said if Poemon Go becomes a major annoyance it would as Nintendo——which decides on the locations of the virtual gyms according to GPS——to have it removed from the premises(道馆).evin Parer, associate chief nurse, said, “Members of the public who do not need to be at Royal Stoe should not attempt to enter A&E or any other part of the hospital building to play the game. The A&E department is incredibly busy this summer. We want the public to understand that anybody who visits the hospital solely to play the game will provide an unwanted distraction to the important wor of the hospital. I’m also aware of various reports in the media of unsafe areas that the game has been played in.”“Royal Stoe University Hospital is a safe area where gamers can enjoy Poemon Go.” Michelle Harris, the Trust’s manager, said the game could still be played by those already in hospital. “We recognie that the Poemon Go game encourages waling and eercise, which is something that the Trust is equally een to promote,” she said. There are a number of “waling routes” established throughout the Trust that can be used to combine waling and playing the game. “Waling just 30 minutes, five times a wee,can help reduce the ris of preventable illnesses such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.”There have been several warnings about the game since its U release. Last wee a group of teenagers in Wiltshire were left stranded almost 100ft underground after they got carried away searching for Poemon Go characters. The four boys, aged 16 and 17, ended up getting lost and had to wait to get a phone signal before they could call for help. She made it clear this was a business call. “I want to apply to wor with you at Faceboo,” she said. “Instead of recommending myself, I want to as you What is your biggest problem, and how can I solve it?”My jaw hit the floor. I had hired thousands of people over the previous decade and no one had ever said anything remotely lie that. People usually focus on finding the right role for themselves, with the impl ication that their sills will help the company. Lori put Faceboo’s needs front and center. It was a iller approach. I responded, “Recruiting is my biggest problem. And, yes, you can solve it.”Lori never dreamed she would wor in recruiting, but she jumped in. She even agreed to trade earnings for acquiring new sills in a new field. Lori did a great job running recruiting and within months was promoted to her current job, leading People@Faceboo.The most common metaphor for careers is a ladder, but this concept no longer applies to most worers. As of 2010, the average American had eleven jobs from the ages of eighteen to forty-si alone. Lori often quotes Pattie Sellers, who came up with a much better metaphor “Careers are a jungle gym, not a ladder.”As Lo ri describes it, there’s only one way to get to the top of a ladder, but there are many ways to get to the top of a jungle gym. The jungle gym model benefits everyone, but especially women who might be starting careers, switching careers, getting bloced by eternal barriers, or reentering the worforce after taing time off. The ability to create a unique path with occasional dips, detours (弯路), and even dead endspresents great views of many people, not just those at the top. What can we infer from the passage?A. Now all people don’t tend to climb the ladder.B. None on the ladder can enjoy the great views.C. Jungle gyms offer limited eploration for employees.D. A pregnant woman, jobless, benefits little from the jungle gyms.31. What is the best title of the passage?A. It’s a Jungle Gym, Not a Ladder.B. Faceboo’s Biggest Problem.C. Applying for a Job in Faceboo.D. A Jungle Gym is Better than a Ladder.DWe love the sea. We swim into it, live near it, build beside it, and even imagine about living under the sea. But we’re terrified of it, too. For much of our history, we have turned to “hard engineering” to control the marine (海洋) environment and manage its influence on us. We build dams, sea walls and channels. But all these efforts seem to fail. The sea has a habit of taing bac its own. And we suffer.Johnston, a marine ecologist, is advocating for “blue engineering” —the marine version of the “green engineering” movement on land that has seen nations lie Singapore building the walls and roofs of the concrete jungle with plant life.We are epanding further into the marine environment. This practice does harm to marine ecosystems. We’re loving the sea to death, but we’ve not been thining about design of structures (建筑物) with respect to ecology. Some coastal structures create shade, which reduces the growth of seaweed. Bright lights at night disturb species such as turtles. That’s why blue engineering comes in.Throughout the world people are starting to turn things around. Researchers with the World Harbour Project are creating tiles (瓦片) similar to the natural structures found on rocy shores with 3D printing technology. These mae more attractive homes for marine creatures. Researchers are also actively seeding these tiles with local seaweeds and creatures such as the Sydney roc oyster, which is particularly good at improving water quality. Twelve harbours around the world are taing part in this marine tile eperiment, each woring with their own unique marine life. It’s a far cry from, the days when huge number of old tyres were thrown, into the sea to build “artificial reef” (礁石). Those clumsy early attempts are now costing millions to remove, showing just how far we have yet to go in understanding how best to co-habit with the underwater world.32. What do we now about “hard engineering”?A. It has improved sea environment.B. It can control the influence of sea.C. It has failed to achieve its purpose.D. It maes living under sea impossible.33. Para.3 is mainly about the to introduce the project of “blue engineering”.A. drawbacsB. reasonsC. proceduresD. measures34. Which of the following is a form of “blue engineering”?A. Constructing buildings with plant life.B. Epanding into marine environments.C. Creating an artificial reef with old tyres.D. Building structures benefiting sea creatures.35. What is the writer’s feeling towards the present situation of marine environment?A. RelievedB. DoubtfulC. SatisfiedD. Disappointed第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
