2. When I was nine years old, I loved to go fishing with my dad. But the only thing that wasn’t very fun about it was that I couldn’t catch anything. I usuall y got pretty upset and kept asking him why. He always answered, “Son, if you want to catch a fish, you have to think like a fish.” I remember being even more upset then because I didn’t know how to think like a fish. Besides, I reasoned, how could what I think influence what a fish does.
As I got a little older I began to understand what my dad really meant. So, I read some books on fish. And I even joined the local fishing club and started attending the monthly meetings. I learned that a fish is a cold-blooded animal and therefore is very sensitive to water temperature. That is why fish prefer shallow water to deep water because the former is warmer. Besides, water is usually warmer in direct sunlight than in the shade. Yet, fish don’t have any eyelids (眼皮) and the sun hurts their eyes... The more I understood fish, the more I became effective at finding and catching them.
When I grew up and entered the business world, I remember hearing my first boss say, “We all need to think like sales people.” But it didn’t completely make sense. My dad never once said, “If you want to catch a fish you need to think like a fisherman.” What he said was, “You need to think like a fish.” Years later, with great efforts to promote long-term services to people much older and richer than me, I gradually learned what we all need is to think more like customers. It is not an easy job. I will show you how in the following chapters.
1. Why was the author upset about fishing when he was nine?
A.He could not catch a fish.
B.His father was not patient with him.
C.His father did not teach him to fish.
D.He could not influence a fish as his father did.
2. According to the author, fish are most likely to be found ______.
A.in deep water on sunny days B.in deep water on cloudy days
C.in shallow water under sunlight D.in shallow water under waterside trees
3. After entering the business world, the author found ______.
A.it easy to think like a customer B.his father’s fishing advice inspiring
C.his first bosses sales ideas reasonable D.it difficult to sell services to poor people 4. Where does the text probably come from?
A.A fishing guide. B.A popular sales book.
C.A novel on childhood. D.A book about rich people.
3. While still in its early stages, welfare reform has already been judged a great success in many states —at least in getting people off welfare. It’s estimated that more than 2 million people have left the rolls(名单) since 199
4.
In the past four years, welfare rolls in Athens County have been cut in half. But 70 percent of the people who left in the past two years took jobs that paid less than $6 an hour. The result: The Athens County poverty rate still remains at more than 30 percent - twice the national average. For advocates for the poor, that’s an indicatio n that much more needs to be done.
“More people are getting jobs, but it’s not making their lives any better,” says Kathy Lairn, a policy analyst at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities in Washington.
A center analysis of US Census data nationwide found that last year, a greater percentage of single, female-headed households were earning money on their own, but that average income for these households actually went down.
But for many, the fact that poor people are able to support themselves almost as well without government aid as they did with it is in itself a huge victory.
“Welfare was a poison. It was a toxin that was poisoning the family,” says Robert Rector, a welfare-reform policy analyst. “The reform is changing the moral climate in low-income communities. It’s beginning to rebuild the work ethic, which is much more important.”
Mr. Rector and others argued that once “the habit of dependency is cracked,” then the country can make other policy changes aimed at improving living standards.
1. Why do n’t people enjoy their lives better when they get jobs?
A.Because they are used to relying on welfare to make livings.
B.Because the cost of living is higher than before.
C.Because many families are not satisfied with their income.
D.Because their wages are very low.
2. From the passage we know that the reconstruction of ______ is the core of the reform.
A.government aids B.work ethic
C.welfare funds D.moral awareness
3. According to the example of the Athens Country, why great efforts should be made for the poor?
A.To improve their living standards. B.To help them be employed.
C.To get them off welfare. D.To increase their wage.
4. What can be inferred about the author based on the passage?
A.He is completely certain about the success of welfare reform.
B.He thinks that welfare reform has done little good for the poor.
C.He considers welfare reform successful in general.
D.He insists welfare reform has increased the government’s burden.
4. A team of engineers at Harvard University has been inspired by nature to create the first robotic fly. The mechanical fly has become a platform for a series of new high-tech systems. Designed to do what a fly does naturally, the tiny machine is the size of a fat housefly. Its mini wings allow it to stay in the air and perform controlled flight tasks.
“It’s extremely important for us to think about this as a whole system and not just a bunch of individual components (零件),” said Robert Wood, the Harvard engineering professor who has been working on the robotic fly project for over a decade. “The added difficulty with such a project is that actually none of those components are off the shelf and so we have to make them all on our own,” he said.
They engineered a series of systems to start and drive the robotic fl y. “The seemingly simple system which just moves the wings has a number of individual components, each of which individually has to perform well, and then has to be matched well to everything its connected to,” said Wood. The flight device was built into a set of power, computation, sensing and control systems. Wood says the success of the project proves that the flying robot with these tiny components can be built and manufactured.
Wood says the design offers a new way to study flight mechanics and control at insect-scale. Yet, the power, sensing and computation technologies on board could have much broader applications. “You can start thinking about using them to answer open scientific questions, you know, to study biology in ways that would be difficult w ith the animals, but using these robots instead,” he said. “So there are a lot of technologies and open interesting scientific questions that are really what drives us on a day-to-day basis.”
1. Which of the followings can replace the underlined phrase “off the shelf” in Para 2?
A.Reliable. B.Put aside. C.Unprepared. D.Ready-made. 2. What does the success of the robotic fly suggest?
A.It will help to kill dangerous insects.
B.The flight device needs a few components.
C.Scientists are able to make tiny flying machines.
D.Humans will seldom use animals in biological tests.
3. What does Wood hope to do with the flying robot?
A.To put it to the market. B.To solve more scientific problems.
C.To fix the system on other animals. D.To encourage people to learn biology. 4. What can be the best title for the text?
A.Father of Robotic Fly B.Robotic Fly Imitates Real Life Insect C.Inspiration from Engineering Science D.Harvard Breaks Through in Insect Study
5. How can teenagers keep themselves from suffering from loneliness? Here are some suggestions for speeding a recovery from loneliness.
Reach out to others but start small. A smile and a friendly greeting for the student behind you in line at the cafeteria (餐厅) won’t make you best friends. 1 It also can make it easier to interact the next time.
Find a safe place to make connections. If going to the dancing party makes you feel like you just don’t belong, try joining a special-interest group. Maybe it’s the drama club or the marching band. 2 Find other ways of making connections. Lonely people hunger for friendship. Sometimes feeling accepted and liked comes more easily when you do something for others rather than waiting for them to make you feel better. 3 Help a child in reading. Take notes for a disabled classmate. You might be surprised at the connections you make.
4 Loneliness is an absence of quality friendship, not of a particular quantity of friends. That’s why it’s important to know how to select a friend.
You get what you expect, so expect the best. If you expect others to be friendly, you will behave in proper ways that encourage people to be friendlier to you. 5 But starting the first step of positive expectations can make all the difference.

A Father’s Day Surprise
“Mano, do you know when Father’s Day is celebrated?”Ali asked his sister.
“Yes, it is going to be celebrated on June 19 this year. Yesterday my friend and I were talking about it. ”Mano replied.
“Do you have any idea how we should celebrate this day and make it memorable for Dad?”Ali asked.“Hmm. . I was thinking about it too and have some ideas. ”Mano answered excitedly. “What are you kids talking about?” their mum asked, entering their room.
“Mum, we were wondering about how to celebrate Father’s Day. ”Mano said.
“Oh, I am surprised you kids rememb ered! Well, I am thinking of cooking some favorite dishes for your father. You both should think of ways to decorate the house beautifully. ”Mum said.
“That would be great!”said Mano and Ali together. Both of them got up smiling, thinking of hundreds of wa ys to celebrate Father’s Day. Mum went to the kitchen, and Mano and Ali started doing their homework. But soon Ali noticed Mano deep in thought so he asked what the matter was. “Ali, I was thinking that our parents do everything for us and in return they want nothing. Isn’t it bad that we never think about them and are always concerned about our needs?”Mano replied. “Sometimes we are so busy with our lives that we don’t pay proper attention to our parents. We should listen to whatever they say properly and answer them. We must also study hard to get good grades. ”Ali nodded. The next day, all three of them, Mano, Ali and their mum, got busy preparing their surprise celebration for Father’s Day. Mano drew a family picture with her crayons, Ali bought balloons and candles and began writing a poem which he planned to sing that day. In short, a lot of things were being planned and prepared.
