Nitrogen constitutes the largest portion, accounting for approximately 78% of the atmosphere, followed by oxygen at around 21%. These gases play crucial roles in sustaining life on Earth.
Oxygen, in particular, is vital for respiration in most living organisms, including humans. Through the process of
cellular respiration, oxygen is utilized to generate energy, enabling various physiological functions. Additionally, oxygen participates in the formation of ozone (O3) in the stratosphere, which shields the Earth from harmful
ultraviolet radiation.
Nitrogen, despite being inert and non-reactive under normal conditions, serves several critical functions. It is an essential component of proteins, nucleic acids, and
other biomolecules, contributing to the structure and function of living organisms. Moreover, nitrogen is crucial for maintaining the balance of ecosystems through its role
in the nitrogen cycle.
