We talk about people being “colour-blind”but very few of us are. Even those who describe themselves as colour-blind are normally just colour lack. A strongly colour-blind person will still be able to tell 20 different colours, compared to the 100 or so that normal-sighted people see .
pingelap, a tiny island in the Pacific, is a beautiful spot but one that has a genetic trouble. It is known as colour Blind Island because so many people who live on this remote island can only see in black and white.
Not being able to see in colour is bad enough. But one islander, Herrol, who's a fisherman, also struggles in full sunlight because all he sees is a painful burnt-out image. "I find it difficult to go outside in the sun," he says, "because when it's sunny I cannot see to do my work.”
But if being truly colour-blind is rare, why is it that around 10% of the population of Pingelap
live in a totally black and white world?
Well, we know that in 1780 the population of pingelap was all but wiped out by a tsunami(海啸).As few as 20 people survived. One of whom was the king. It's believed he had a genetic fault
that causes colour-blindness and he passed this fault on to his many generations. There is one advantage. herrol can see well, really well, in the dark. So when it gets dark, Herrol and his friends get in their beats and hunt flying fish. They hang up flaming torches and the fish are attracted to the flames. "This type of fishing, is fun," Herrol says. "especially if we catch plenty. So even though it's hard work we enjoy it.”

B. tie is interested in burnt-out images.
C. He likes taking photos very touch.

A scientist turns out to be able to see the future by offering each of four-year-olds a piece of candy and watching how he or she deals with it. Some children reach eagerly for the treat they see. Some last a few minutes before they give in. But others are determined to wait until the last moment.
By the time the children reach high school, something remarkable has happened.
A survey found that those who as four-year-olds had enough self-control to hold out generally grew up to be more popular, adventurous, confident and dependable. The children who gave in to temptation (诱惑) early were more likely to be lonely, easily frustrated and inflexible (固守己见的).
Actually, the ability to delay reward is a sign of emotional intelligence which doesn't show up on an IQ test.
The hardware of the brain and the software of the mind have long been scientists' concerns. But brain theory can't explain what we wonder about most, like the question why some people remain upbeat in the face of troubles that would sink a less resistant soul.
Here comes the theory of Daniel Goleman, writer of Emotional Intelligence: when it comes to predicting people's success, brain ability as measured by IQ may actually matter less than the qualities of mind once thought of as" character".
EQ is not the opposite of IQ. What researchers have been trying to understand
is how they work together; how one's ability to handle stress, for instance, affects the ability to concentrate and put intelligence to use. Among the ingredients (要素) for success, researchers now generally agree that IQ counts for about 20%; the rest depends on everything from social class to luck.
While many researchers in this relatively new field are glad to see emotional issues finally taken seriously, some few fear EQ invites misuse.
28. The experiment with the four-year-olds makes it clear that _____.
A. the age of 4 is a proper time for scientific experiment
B. emotional intelligence won't show up until adolescence
C. the ability of self-control plays a role in personal success
D. candy can be used to measure a person's emotional intelligence
29. The underlined word "upbeat" in Paragraph 4 probably means _____.
A. kind
B. floating
C. excited
D. optimistic
30. Why does the author mention the experiment at the beginning of the text?
A. To introduce the topic of the text.
B. To prove the scientist's wisdom.
C. To amuse both the children and readers.
D. To show us how to do an IQ test.
31. What is most likely to be written in the paragraph that follows?
A. Information about famous people with high EQ.
B. Examples showing the opposite voice about EQ.
C. Some reasons why EQ is a relatively new field.
D. Strong demand for basic emotional education.

Ways to Keep Your Brain Sharp
Everyone is forgetful, but as we age, we start to feel like our brains are slowing down a bit—and that can be a very annoying thing. 36 Read on for some techniques worth trying.
1. 37
People who regularly made plans and looked forward to upcoming events had a 50 percent reduced chance of Alzheimer's disease (老年痴呆症), according to a recent study. 38 Something as simple as setting a goal to have a weekly coffee date with a friend will do. There's evidence that people who have a purpose in life or who are working on long or short-term goals appear to do better. In other words, keep your brain looking forward.
2. Go for a walk.
Mildly raised glucose (葡萄糖) levels can harm the area of the brain that helps you form memories and physical activity can help get blood glucose down to normal levels. In fact, exercise produces chemicals that are good for your brain. 39
3. Learn something new.
Take a Spanish class online, join a drawing club, or learn to play cards. A study found that mental stimulation (刺激) limits the weakening effects of aging on memory and the mind. But the best thing for your brain is when you learn something new and are physically active at the same time. 40 Or go dancing with your friends.
A. Focus on the future.
B. This can be especially harmful to the aged.
C. It should be something like learning gardening.
D. So take a few minutes each day to do some reading
E. But don't worry if your schedule isn't filled with life-changing events.
F. Luckily, research shows there is a lot you can do to avoid those moments.

Dear Jenny,
I am really sorry to hear that you feel bad after entering the high school. I’d like to talk about it with you.
In fact, in your senior high school, your classmates are also new and facing the same problem, so you don’t have to worry too much about it. There is also something that you can do to change this situation. First, try to invite some of your classmates to take part in some activities together after school. This will help you understand
each other better when communicating with others. Then, help your classmates when they are in trouble and ask them to help you when you have difficulties.
I believe you will make many new friends and you will have a happy school life there. Best wishes!
