短文填空(三) 新加坡英语“kiasu”介绍+科幻作家刘慈欣A[2020·原创]Do you know the word kiasu? If not, google it. You'll get more than a million hits and learn that, usually associated(联系) with Singaporeans, it means “to be afraid of losing out”. You'll come across words such as kiasu parents, kiasu companies and even kiasu apps.Just 40 years ago, the word first spread among men in the Singapore army. But before long, it had entered everyday Singapore English. The first formal use of kiasu happened in 1990 in a government document(公文). Since then it has often been seen in Singapore newspapers. It spread to some other countries in south-east Asia, too. In 1992 Malaysia's New Straits Times wrote of “kiasu parents providing their children with much more materials”.Ten years after its first use in print, the word was used worldwide. Since around 2000, kiasu has appeared in British newspapers. The Guardian, in 2001, reported how this pursuit(追求) of material wealth and the strong need to be No.1 has created the Singaporean, and again reported in 2004 that Singaporeans' value shows how much they feel the need to stay ahead of everyone else and that they have a word for it: kiasu. The word entered the Urban Dictionary in 2003 and the Oxford English Dictionary in 2007. In the same year, Singaporean restaurant Kiasu opened in London. The turning point on kiasu's road to the mainstream came with its being used in documents and newspapers. Who dared to use kiasu in a government document? Who first used it in a newspaper? It was these people who pushed kiasu into the mainstream.

Now, let's have a look together at some of them.⒈Paul McCartney Found Yesterday in a dreamPaul McCartney is one of the most famous singers/songwriters of all time. According to the Guinness Book of Records, his Beatles song Yesterday(1965)has the most cover(翻唱)versions of any song ever written and, according to record label BMI,was performed over seven million times in the 20th century. The tune for Yesterday came to Paul McCartney in a dream.“I woke up with a lovely tune in my head. I thought, 'That's great, I wonder what that is?' There was an upright piano next to me, to the right of my bed by the window. I got out of bed, sat at the piano, found G, found F sharp minor---- and that leads you through then to B to E minor, and finally back to E. It all leads forward logically. I liked the melody a lot, but because I'd dreamed it, I couldn't believe I'd written it. I thought, 'No, I've never written anything like this before.' But I had the tune, which was the most magic thing! ”⒉Mary Shelley's Frankentein Inspired by a DreamIn the summer of 1816, nineteen-year-old Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin and her lover, the poet Percy Shelley (whom she married later that year), visited the poet Lord Byron at his villa beside Lake Geneva in Switzerland. Stormy weather frequently forced them indoors, where they and Byron's other guests sometimes read from a volume of ghost stories. One evening, Byron challenged his guests to each write one themselves.Mary's story, inspired by a dream, became Frankentein(科学怪人).“When I placed my head upon my pillow, I did not sleep, nor could I be said to think----My eyes shut ,I saw------with my acute mental vision----the pale student of unholy arts kneeling beside the thing he had put together. I saw the ugly figure of a man stretch out, and then, on the working of some powerful engine, show signs of life, and tremble with an uneasy motion, extremely frightful. The next morning I announced that I had thought of a story. I began that day with the words, 'It was on a dull night of November', making only a transcript(文字稿) of the cruel terror of my waking dream.”(1)We can learn from the whole passage that_________.A. Some great stories, poems and songs were created while their writers sleptB. Paul McCartney likes writing songs in dreamsC. Frankentein was written by Byron's guestsD. Byron was an ugly frightful Frankentein(2)The underlined word“melody”has the similar meaning of _______.A. dreamB. songC. tuneD. instrument(3)Which is the best title of the whole passage?A. The Greatest writersB. The most famous song and storyC. Great dreams that come trueD.
AIn Singapore, most of us love window-shopping while some others enjoy having a picnic at East Coast Park or Changi Beach on sunny days. Singaporeans are never bothered by the occasional thunderstorm. However, we know that if it rains for long continuous periods, there will be more serious effects. Just recently the main shopping street of Orchard Road was flooded and some part of Bukit Timah was impassable to traffic. People reacted by writing in to the newspaper to complain about this! We forget that other countries suffer much worse effects. Elsewhere, heavy tropical (热带的)s torms often result in floods that ruin crops especially in Thailand and Malaysia. This in turn usually means that the price of rice and vegetables here in Singapore will rise because we import these products from them. If there is a typhoon or tsunami, thousands of lives are lost too. This happened in Indonesia and Phuket in Thailand in 2004 and it serves to remind us of how Mother Nature can cause great damage.Weather patterns in general have changed dramatically in recent years. Scientists believe that global warming and the resulting melting of the polar ice-cap has caused the level of the ocean to rise. This in turn causes flooding of low-lying areas in countries where the land is rather flat and some parts of which is below water level. It is believed that human activities have caused Mother Nature to show her extreme anger, so it is now important that we really work together to cut down on harmful activities, for example, illegal logging(伐木)or irresponsible forest-burning to clear land for farming.56.From Paragraph 1, we can see that most Singaporeans love________.A. making complaintsB. going out for picnicsC. doing window-shoppingD. traveling along the coast【答案】C【解析】根据第一段第一句可知。

AThe iPhone, the iPad: each of Apple's products sounds cool and has become a fad(一度时髦的风尚).Apple has cleverly taken advantage of the power of the letter “i”-and many other brands are following suit. The BBC's iPlayer-which allows web users to watch TV programs on the Internet-adopted the title in 2008.A lovely bear -popular in the US and the UK-that plays music and video is called “iTeddy”.A slimmed-down version of The Independent newspaper was launched last week under the name “i”.In general,single-letter prefixes have been popular since the 1990s,when terms such as e-mail and e-commerce first came into use. Most “i”products are aimed at young people and considering the major readers of The Independent's “i”,it's no surprise that they've selected this fashionable name. But it's hard to see what's so special about the letter “i”.Why not use “a”,“b”,or “c” instead? According to Tony Thorne, former head of the Language Center at King's College London,“i” works because its meaning has become ambiguous. When Apple uses “i”,no one knows whether it means Internet, information, individual or interactive,Thorne told BBC Magazines.“Even when Apple created the iPod,it seems it didn't have one clear definition,” he says.“However, thanks to Apple, the term is now associated with portability(轻便).” Adds Thorne.Clearly the letter “i” also agrees with the idea that the Western world is centered on the individual. Each person believes they have their own needs, and we love personalized products for this reason.Along with “Google”and “blog”,readers of BBC Magazines voted “i”as one of the top 20 words that have come to define the last decade. But as history shows, people grow tired of fads. From the 1900s to 1990s,products with “2000”in their names became fashionable as the year was associated with all things advanced and modern. However,as we entered the new century, the trend unavoidably disappeared.1.People use iPlayer to________.A.listen to musicB.make a callC.watch TV programs onlineD.read newspapers2.We can infer that The Independent's “i”is aimed at________.A.young readersB.old readersC.fashionable womenD.engineers3.Nowadays,the “i”term often reminds people of the products which are________. A.portableB.environmentally friendlyC.advancedD.recyclable4.The writer suggests that________.A.“i”products are often of high qualityB.iTeddy is a living bearC.the letter “b” replaces the letter “i” to name the productsD.the popularity of “i”products may not last long【答案与解析】1.C细节理解题。

Renowned for its efficient governance, thriving economy, and rich cultural tapestry, Singapore has become a global hub for commerce, tourism, and education. The history of Singapore is as fascinating as it is diverse. Originally inhabited by indigenous Malays, the island's strategic location drew the attention of various empires throughout history. In the 14th century, it was a part of the Majapahit Empire, followed by the Sultanate of Johor. However, it was in 1819 when Sir Stamford Raffles established a British trading post on the island, marking the beginning of its colonial era.Under British rule, Singapore flourished as a key trading port due to its natural harbor and strategic location along major shipping routes. The influx of immigrants from China, India, and the Malay Archipelago during this period enriched Singapore's cultural fabric, laying the foundation for its multicultural society.Independence came in 1965 when Singapore separated from Malaysia to become a sovereign nation. Despite initial challenges, Singapore quickly transformed into one of Asia's most developed countries, guided by visionary leadership and a commitment to economic growth and social harmony.Today, Singapore stands at the forefront of innovation and technology. Its skyline, adorned with iconic landmarks such as Marina Bay Sands and the Gardens by the Bay, reflects its modernity and ambition. The city-state's economy, once reliant on manufacturing and trade, has diversified into finance, biotechnology, and tourism, bolstered by a highly skilled workforce and strategic investments in research and development.Education is a cornerstone of Singaporean society, with a strong emphasis on meritocracy and lifelong learning. The country boasts world-class educational institutionssuch as the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University, attracting students from around the globe.Singapore's cultural landscape is a mosaic of traditions and celebrations. The city-state celebrates religious festivals such as Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Puasa, Deepavali, and Christmas with equal enthusiasm, reflecting its multicultural identity. Hawker centers, offering a variety of affordable and delectable cuisines from Chinese to Malay to Indian, are integral to Singaporean culinary culture and a testament to its gastronomic diversity.Despite its urbanization, Singapore places a high value on green spaces and sustainability. The Singapore Botanic Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the newly created Jurong Lake Gardens are examples of the city's commitment to preserving its natural heritage amidst rapid development. In conclusion, Singapore's journey from a colonial trading post to a global metropolis is a testament to its resilience, adaptability, and forward-thinking approach. As it continues to navigate the complexities of a globalized world, Singapore remains an inspiring example of what a small nation can achieve through visionary leadership, strategic planning, and a deep respect for its cultural roots.。

A Young Singaporean’s View Of ShanghaiShanghai is seen as a“global business hub ”and it is only a matter of time before it becomes the“New York of the East”. The city has a population of close to 17 million which underlies its immense market potential. Depending on their spending powers, Shanghainese from different strata of society can take their pick from a wide range of choices — from paying three yuan for a bowl of traditional la mian to 20 yuan for a cup of cappuccino. Businesses can thus find a niche for themselves1 by catering to the needs of different groups of consumers.First-time visitors to Shanghai will invariably first be captivated by the soaring skyscrapers that symbolise the metropolis’wealth and glamour. Across the skyline of Puxi is China’s tallest building — the 88 -storey Jin Mao Tower —in Pudong New Area .The towering skyscrapers are signs of Shanghai's prosperity and the magnets that attract both local and foreign talent to converge on the metropolis. On the other hand, peopleare spoilt for choice by the variety of recreational and entertainment2 activities that demonstrate how colourful and interesting life is in Shanghai. It is no wonder that3 Chinese and overseas tourists are flocking to the city. The vast variety of merchandise alone may not be enough to make the tourists come back. But meticulous and excellent service will. The Shanghainese whom you see on the street will remind you of the congestion and apathy typical of a thriving city. Yet, step into any fast-food restaurant and you will be greeted with warm and friendly service from young waiters and waitresses. They will make you rethink what makes the city tick.Just raise your hand and no matter how busy the waiters and waitresses are , someone will attend to you with a reply:“Right away! ”They speak clearly and know their job well and I’m only talking about ordinary service personnel4. This is a good indication of how competitive the young people in Shanghai are. Well, I did not come into contact with that many young people in Shanghai during my trip, but those whom I’ve met at fast-food restaurants and cafes no doubt struck me as highly-efficient, quick-thinking and full of drive5 . Young Singaporeans seem to lack the astuteness and dynamism that they possess. It is true that a people's character is, to a great extent, shaped by the environment they live in. But if we rest on our laurels, we risk losing our vitality. And a city with little life will not be able to attract tourists, let alone retain its talent. Fill in the bla nks with words from the passage:1. Shanghainese from different can take their pick from a wide range of choices.2. Businesses can thus find a niche for themselves by different groups of consumers.3. Not surprisingly, tourists recognise it at once as a shoppers’paradise.4. The Shanghainese whom you see on the street will remind you of thetypical of a city.5. Young Singaporeans seem to lack the that they possess.Ⅱ. Question :Why does the author feel necessary to mention Jinmao Tower?Ⅰ.1. strata of society2. catering to the needs of3. discerning4. congestion and apathy / thriving5. astuteness and dynamismⅡ.Because it is a skyscraper by which first-time visitors to Shanghai will invariably first be captivated.

Sex And The City-stateOn a small downtown stage, two men kiss passionately. Visitors to a nearby museum look at provocative nudes on the wall, while readers scour local magazines for the best place to buy sex toys. Think you re in New York? Guess again. This is Singapore, the famously uptight city-state better known for banning films like Eyes Wide Shut and Lolita, 2 not to mention magazines like Playboy3.There s not exactly a free -love revolution going on, but Singapore has in recent years loosened its restrictions on sex in the arts. And more freedom is on the horizon: this month the government s Censorship Review Committee ( CRC) is expected to issue a report further easing the guidelines governing what Singaporeans read, watch and listen to. That means it may not be long before Singaporeans can enjoy Cosmopolitan magazine, and maybe even racy TV shows like HBO s Sex and the City. The new rules are part of Singapore s efforts to bolster its art scene . In 2002, it opened a world-class performing-arts center, the Esplanade -Theatres on the Bay, which has quickly become a visual icon and is tackling ambitious programs like the 19-hour opera The Peony Pavilion4 .Singapore still has a long way to go to become a true bastion of artistic freedom. Sexually explicit scenes were recently cut from Chicago to give it a PG rating5. Certaintopics remain very sensitive .In the end, the CRC is expected to recommend relatively small changes: loosening controls on pay-per-view TV6 and clarifying the rating system for films and plays so viewers know exactly what to expect. Such incremental change seems to be in step with public tastes. Indeed, a recent survey by the CRC found that most people favored remaining true to existing Asian values. So don t expect to see Penthouse on newsstands any time soon. True or False:1. Singapore has been famous for its conservative attitude towards its sex.2.
A Level”
