But what’s the best age to wed? When Avril Lavigne announced she was splitting from her husband, ments from her friends suggested that she was only 21 when she tied the knot and later she said that she realized she'd been too young to make such a life-altering decision. Could fellow young celebrity divorcées(离婚者) Reese Witherspoon, Kate Hudson, and Britney Spears have also hit the same age-related issue? The Magic NumberThere are practical reasons for the mid-20s dividing line, and most of them boil down to two biggies: education and money. It turns out that the more years of higher education a woman has under her belt on her wedding day, the lower the chances that she'll get divorced ... and by 25, you're more likely to have earned a degree or two. Educated women tend to be more confident about who they are and less willing to settle for a man who doesn't meet their standards.Odds(可能性) are that by 25 you're also supporting yourself, so there's less incentive(刺激; 鼓励)for you to rush into marriage because you're seeking financial security from him. But the marriage-related benefits of working and having money of your own go beyond feeling secure. Learning to budget your cash carefully when you're single will help you avoid financial problems—one of the main causes of couple fights—for the rest of your life.Knowing the Real YouAt 25, you've had time for some crucial life experiences, including a relationship or two that may have improved your Mr. Right radar. You've probably dated enough to have a better idea of what you don't want in a man, which makes it easier to know what you can live with and can't live without.Perhaps the most important aspect of waiting is that you'll know what your goals and values really are. While you don't want to marry someone just like you, marriage is a lot easier if you two share a similar outlook on life.Twenty-four and already married to the man of your dreams? Don't worry: Many young marriages survive. But given the choice, you might consider putting off the big day until your mid-20s or later.46. What main factors influence the mid-20s dividing line? (No more than 3 words)_________________________________________________________________47. According to the author, why does a couple probably fight?(No morethan 4 words)_________________________________________________________________48. How do you know what you don’t want in a man? 高三英语下学期周练试题(4.9)高三全册英语试题
位敦市安定阳光实验学校高三英语下学期周练试题(4.9)一、阅读理解About ten men in every hundred suffer from color blindness in some way. Women are luckier, only about one in two hundred is affected in this matter. Perhaps, after all, it is safer to be driven by a woman. There are different forms of color blindness. In some cases a man may not be able to see deep red. He may think that red, orange and yellow are all shades of green. Sometimes a person can’t tell the differences between blue and green. In rare cases an unlucky man sees everything in shades of green—a strange world in deed.Color blindness in human beings is strange thing to explain. In a single eye there are millions very small things called “cones”. These help us see in a bright day and tell the differences between colors. There are also millions of “rods”, but these are used for seeing when it is nearly dark. They show us shapes but not color. Some insects have favorite colors. Mosquitoes like blue but do not like yellow. A red light will not attract insects but a blue lamp will. In similar way human being also have favorite colors by day and with the aid of the rods we can see shapes at night. One day we may even learn more about the invisible colors around us.1.The passage is mainly about ________.A. color and its surprising effects on driverB. women being luckier than man that fewer of them are color blindC. danger caused by color blindnessD. color blindness and how our eyes tell different colors and shapes 2.According to the passage, with the help of “cones”we can ________.A. tell different colorsB. see in weak lightC. tell different shapesD. tell orange from yellow3.Why do some people say it is safer to be driven women?A. None of them can sec deep red but all can tell blue from green.C. None of them can tell blue from green but all can see deep red.D. All of them are lucky enough to see everything in shades of green. Most episodes of absent-minded-forgetting where you left something or wondering why you just entered a room-are caused by a simple lack of attention, says Schacter.“You’re supposed to remember something, butyou haven’t encoded it deeply.”Encoding,Schacter explains,is a special way of paying attention to an event that has a major impact on recalling it later.Failure to encode properly can create annoying situation. If you put your mobile phone in a pocket, for example, and don’t pay attention to what you did because you’re involved in a conversation, you’ll probably forget that the phone is in the jacket now hanging in your wardrobe(衣柜).“Your memory itself isn’t failing you,” says Schacter,“Rather, you didn’t give your memory system the information it needed.”Lack of interest can also lead to absent-mindedness.“A man who recite sports statistics from 30 years ago,”says Zelinski,“may not remember to drop a letter in the mailbox.”Women have slightly better memories than men, possibly because they are more interested in what’s happening around them, and memory relies on just that.Visual cues(提示)can help prevent absent-mindedness,saysSchacter.“But be sure the cue is clear and available,”he cautions. If you want to remember to take a medication with lunch, put the bill bottle on the kitchen table-don’t leave it in the medicine chest and write yourself a note that you keep in a pocket.Another common episode of absent-mindedness:walking into a room and wondering why you’re there. Most likely, you were thinking about something else.“Everyone does this from time to time,” says Zelinski. The best thing to do is to return to where you were before entering the room, and you’ll likely remember.5.What does the underlined word “episode” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?A. Experiences.B. Experiments.C. Expressions.D. Feelings. 6.According to the passage, women have better memories than men probably because .A. they have a wider range of interestsB. they always put things where they wereC. they pay more attention to their environmentD. they prefer to write notes to tell them what they should do 7.What can help prevent absent-mindedness according to Schacter? A. Writing notes. B. Taking some medicine.C. Putting something in sight.D. Returning to where you were. 8.What is the best title for the text?A. A Way of Recalling.B. The Importance of Encoding.C. Cures for Absent-mindedness.D. Causes of Absent-mindedness. Persuasion is the art of convincing someone to agree with you. According to the ancient Greeks, there are three basic tools of persuasion : ethos, pathos, and logos.Ethos is a speaker’s way o f convincing the audience that she is trustworthy, honest and reliable. One common way a speaker can developethos is by explaining how much experience or education she has in the field. After all, you’re more likely to listen to advi se about how to take care of your teeth from a dentist than a fireman. A speaker can also create ethos by convincing the audience that she is a good person. If an audience cannot trust you, you will not be able to persuade them. Pathos is a speaker’s way of connecting with an audience’s emotions. For example, a politician who is trying to convince an audience to vote for him might say that he alone can save the country from a terrible war. These words are intended to fill the audience with fear, thus making them support him. Similarly, an animal charity might show an audience pictures of injured dogs and cats, to make the viewers feel pity. If the audience feels bad for the animals, they will be more likely to donate money.Logos is the use of facts, statistics, or other evidence to support your argument. An audience will be more likely to believe you if you have convincing data to back up your claims. Presenting this evidence is much more persuasive than simply saying “believe me”.Although ethos, pathos, and logos all have their strengths, they are often most effective when used together. Indeed, most speakers use a combination of ethos, pathos, and logos to persuade their audiences. So, the next time you listen to a speech, watch a commercial, or listen to a friend try to convince you to lend him some money, be on the lookout for these ancient Greek tools of persuasion.9.Why does the author say persuasion is an art?A. They both entertain the audience.B. They both require great skill to achieve.C. They both demand full attention from the audience.D. They were both common topics of ancient Greek writers.10.How is a speaker able to show her ethos to the audience?A. By expressing her sympathy with the audience.B. By telling the audience about her personal preference.C. By using beautiful language to make her statements attractive.D. By showing her knowledge and experience relating to the topic. 11.What can we learn about the three aspects of persuasion?A. Ethos is the most important aspect of persuasion.B. Each aspect has a different effect on the audience.C. Honesty is the key to making your arguments believable.D. Political leaders mostly use pathos to persuade their audience. 12.An advertisement for washing powder which claims that M scientific tests show that our powder kills 95% of all bacteria” is mainly using _________.A. ethosB. pathosC. logosD. a combination of all three Bill Gates recently predicted that online learning will makeplace-based colleges less significant, and five years from now, students will be able to find the best lectures in the world online.I applaud Mr. Gates. But what’s taking us so long?As early as 1997, MIT (麻省) decided to post videos of all university lectures online, for free, for all people. But today, how many students have you met who mastered advanced mathematics or nuclear physics from an MIT online video? Unfortunately, the answer is not many. The problem is the poor quality of online education websites and the experience they provide to students. Those who go to the MIT website and watch courses online are surely very smart people, but it’s not like playing a video game such as World of Warcraft. Only the most ardent students, those who are highly motivated, will devote themselves to studying these boring online videos. The real question is why we aren’t spending more to develop better online education platforms. Where is the Avatar of education? Think about this. The market for Hollywood films per year is worth around 30 billion USD. Education in the world is a trillion-dollar-a-year market, hundreds of times bigger than Hollywood movies. Yet the most expensive digital learning system ever built cost well under 100 million dollars. Bill Gates’ prediction is going to happen. There is no doubt about it. But it will only happen when we create high level educational content and experiences that engage and excite more than has ever been possible in the real world.13.What has Bill Gates forecast about online learning?A. It will concentrate on physics lectures.B. It will completely replace real universities.C. It will help to make universities more successful.D. It will play an increasingly important role in education. 14.What does the underlined word “ardent” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Creative. B. Enthusiastic. C. Well-behaved. D. Experienced.15.According to the author, what is holding back the popularity of online learning?A. The lack of lectures available online.B. The high cost of access to the websites.C. The low standard of educational websites.D. The competition with online computer games.16.Why does the author mention Hollywood?A. To show that Hollywood produces many successful movies.B. To prove that education is more profitable than entertainment.C. To argue that movie directors should produce educational content.D. To urge that more money be spent developing educational websites.二、完形填空An old man was dying. One by one his relatives visited him. One big concern is the people who take advantage of aids, such as handicap parking spaces.39.And the meeting focused on educating the public. Some handicap spots have extra room next to them, marked with the “N o Parking” signs.“As long as I'm not in the spot, I can take the no-parking area next to it,” some people say. However, the woman who uses a wheelchair disagrees to this. The space exists to allow someone in a wheelchair to have room to get in or out of their car.40.Some walkways have handrails next to them to help those who require extra assistance. Whether it is a blind person seeking guidance or an elderly person seeking support, the rail is there for walking. Sometimes the rail is blocked, by a parked bicycle for instance, and consequently made useless.41.People who are informed of the rail’s use would be less likely to mistake it for a bike rack.Meeting some of the people who are affected by the lack of education about accommodations made me see that there is work to be done. If more people were educated about the proper uses of accommodations, there would be fewer challenges for people with physical disabilities.A. Accommodations will vary according to the needs of the disabled.B. As with the parking spot, this is more likely a case of lack of education.C. They educate about all the accommodations for people with disabilities.D. Improvement must be made so that disabled people can fully participate.E. When things were hard, I would stand by the window and wave to the passengers who looked up. The strange looks made me laugh and stress was washed away.Co-workers began to take an interest in my behavior. They would stand from view, watch the reactions I received, and laugh along. Late afternoon was the best time — rush hour traffic filled the overpass with cars and buses. It didn’t take long to attract a group of staffs who passed the window every day and looked up at the strange waving man. After a while, waving became boring, so I changed ways. I made signs: “Hi,” “Hello,”“Be Happy!”and posted them in the window and waved.I stood near the window in various poses, made faces, stuck out my tongue, and once went into the walkway over the street and danced while co-workers pointed to let fans know I was there.Christmas approached, and job cuts were announced. Several co-workers would lose their jobs, and everyone was feeling low. Stress in the office reached a high. During the break, I hid from my co-workers, slipped into the costume, walked bravely to my desk, sat down, and held my belly, as they gathered around me laughing when my manager was walking through the door. He held his stomach, and tears formed in his eyes. It was the first time I had seen them smile in weeks. He said, “Mike, thanks! With the job cuts it has been hard to enjoy the Christmas season. Thanks for the laugh, I needed it.”24.Which of the following words can best describe the author according to Paragraph 1?A.Optimistic.B.Pessimistic.C.Generous.D.Clever.25.Why was late afternoon the best time?A.Because the author could attract many more people and make them relaxed.B.Because the co-workers would be more interested in his behavior.C.Because there were so many cars and bused then.D.ecause the author was free at that time.26.Who was/were probably interested in the author’s behavior?A.The passengers.B.The drivers.C.The manager.D.The workmates.27.How did the author finally make his workmates and manager laugh?A.By shaking and hitting the manager.B.By his humorous and funny acting.C.By letting his co-workers gather around him.D.By putting pressure on his manager.CTraffic noise can shorten your life, new research suggests. Having to endure rumbling lorries, honking horns and screeching tyres has been linked to shorter life expectancy and a higher risk of stroke.People surrounded by daytime traffic noise louder than 60db (分贝)were 4 per cent more likely to die than those where noise levels were 55db – roughly the level of a loud conversation. The extra deaths mostly involved heart or artery disease - which could in turn be linked to raised blood pressure, sleep problems and stress brought on by noise. The study also found that adults living in areas with the noisiest daytime traffic were 5% more likely to be admitted to hospital for stroke than those from quieter neighbourhoods. For the elderly, this increase in risk rose to 9%.The scientists looked levels of road traffic noise between 7am and 11pm, and at night between 11pm and 7am, across a range of different postcodes and correlated(使有相互关系) their findings with death and hospital admission rates. A number of factors - including individuals' age and sex as well as ethnicity, smoking levels, air pollution and socio-economic deprivation - were taken into account.Commenting on the findings, Professor Francesco Cappuccio, chair of Cardiovascular Medicine and Epidemiology at the University of Warwick, said: “The results do not imply a direct cause-effect relationship. However, they are consistent with other evidence to suggest a possible causal link.”“It has been well established that nocturnal(夜间的) traffic noise disrupts sleep quantity and quality. If sustained over time, these disturbances, like sleep deprivation, have been associated with a 12% increased risk of all-cause mortality, mainly due to a 15% increase in stroke events and high blood pressure. Public health policies must pay more attention to this emerging evidence. ”said he.Given what we know about traffic emissions increasing heart disease, we should remember that travelling by foot or bike is definitely healthier - both for you and for the people around you.28.The noise of can be lighter than 60db.A.rumbling lorriesB.screeching tyresC.loud conversationsD.honking horns29.What does the underlined word “sustained” mean?A.Restrained.B.Maintained.C.Resolved.D.Mistaken.30.What can we learn from Professor Francesco’s words?A.Walking and bike-riding will not increase heart disease.B.Traffic noise in the daytime is less harmful than in the evening.C.Someone may live healthily without being influenced by traffic noise.D.Traffic noise can cause a 15% increase in stroke and high blood pressure.31.Which of the following is TRUE?A.Traffic noise directly leads to stroke.B.The extra deaths mostly involved noise.C.Traffic emissions are more serious than traffic noise.D.Traffic noise has something to do with high blood pressure.DI’m not a hater. I admire those who write, read and love first person point of view. So why did I write PRETTY DARK NOTHING in third person? The answer is simple. It’s the way the story and the characters presented themselves to me. It’s part of my unique voice.Maybe my love of third person comes from all those years reading epic(叙事诗) fantasy. I do think my reading preferences influence how and what I write. There’s something about third person that brings a story to life in a way that first person can’t because of its limited view of the characters. I love the richness of language, the depth of the world, the exploraion of emotion and conflict on a broader range that third person allows me. It’s about diversity.I’m not saying you can’t have rich language or depth in first person point of view. You absolutely can, but it is a challenge, just as writing in third makes it harder to create the same close feeling you get from telling and reading a story in first. Where first person explores the inside out, third tends to give a little more room to pull the camera bake and explore the external. To me, you get the best of both worlds. It gives you enough distance so you don’t feel like you’re experiencing the story through a single prism(棱镜)and yet it’s close enough to help the reader connect to the character and feel as if they’re on the journey with them.In the end, there is no right or wrong. Both points of view have their strengths and their weaknesses. All writers must work to find the right balance and to seek their own voice. At the end of the day, it’s all about the story.
