Patience is a word that has appeared in many forms over the past twomonths.I don’t see myself a s being the most patient person in theworld but there was something that struck me on my first week of work. I hadjust finished a session with two students and just as they were leaving theclassroom, one of the students turned back and said, “Thank you for yourpatience.” That was an early reminder of the importance of being patient as ateacher. It also made me reflect on the language teachers that I have had overthe years, ones that demonstrated a high level of patience andunderstandingthat has shaped my language learning path. Moreover, it helped me to realizethe importance of demonstrating patience in the classroom as it can be thedifference between building someone’s confidence in a language or breaking downtheir confidence entirely.Living my life constantly in French is not easy but thepeople of Quebec are very patient. They repeat things several times and theyare more than happy to wait while I find the correct words to express myselfand find the correct word order. It’s a learning process but with th e patienceof others, the process is slightly less nervous. At the end of the day, makingmistakes shows you are trying and I think that is greatly appreciated byQuebecers. When I first arrived in Matane I kept getting headaches fromhaving to concentrate all the time due to the language and even overhearing otherpeople’s conversations was hard work! I had to keep reminding myself that itwould take time, and two months later the headaches are a distant memory and myears have become more tuned to their accent. The key is to be patient withyourself.(1)According to Paragraph 2, what does the writer think is important as a teacher?A . Understanding.B . Patience.C . Confidence.D . Youcan find almost everything on the Internet. Many people find this way of life more convenient, becausethey can complete their daily chores(琐事)from the comfort of their own home.Firstly, online shopping can be far less stressful thanhitting the high street shops. There are no huge crowds of people or boringlong queues. With online shopping, it’s just you and your computer. It’s likeyou hav e the whole shop to yourself! Secondly, online stores don’t have openingand closing times. This is perfect for anyone with a busy schedule. If you wantto, you can even place an online shopping order at three o’clock in themorning! In the busy modern world, there are clearly many advantagesto online shopping. However, in my experience, there are also several cons…With online shopping, you can’t try before you buy, and that’s a definitedisadvantage for me. Often, when my new clothes arrive, I find they don’t fitvery well. It’s always annoying when a dress is a little too big, or whensleeves are too short…Sometimes, the clothes are not what I was expecting. A pieceof clothing might look great in photos online, but quite different in reallife. In these cases, you want to return the item, but here liesthe biggest problem with online shopping. You have to pay for your order’sdelivery, and for an item to be returned to the warehouse! These charges areoften very expensive, which suddenly make online shopping seem a little lessconvenient… That’s why I don’t choose to shop online very frequently. For now,I will continue to find the time for a trip to a real shop, where I knowexactly what I’m buying!(1)What’s the main idea of the third paragraph?A . The differences among online stores.B . You might not like the findings inthis new research. From a lack of air and drinking water to solar radiation, theoretical Mars pioneers face any number of potential obstacles to settling onthe red planet. Now, scientists have found something else to add to the list:seriously messed-up biological clocks. One day on Mars - whic h scientists refer to as the solarday, or “sol”- is 37 minutes longer than a day on Earth. A team of Europeanscientists recently demonstrated why that could be a problem.Circadian rhythms are the body’s natural cycles of rest andwaking, which tend to follow roughly 24-hour light-dark cycles. These naturalrhythms - which play a role in biological functions including brain waveactivity and hormone production - can be interrupted by things like jet lag(时差)and night shift work. For the study, the researchers compared mice with healthy,24-hour circadian clocks to mice with a genetic change that caused them to haveshorter, 20-hour circadian clocks. The mice with healthy biological clocks weremore likely to survive and reproduce, while the mice with shorter biological clockswere more likely to die off. What does this all have to do with space travel? Since theMartian sol is longer than a day on Earth, people with shorter circadian clockscould suffer from health problems as they try to adapt to the rotational speedof the redplanet.Unfortunately, the body is unlikely to adapt to the newconditions or “learn” to develop a longer clock. As Loudon explained,“ Learningis not a likely option.”In other words: Sorry, super-early risers - NASA might notwant you for the next Mars mission.(1)From the passage, people can face the following troubles living on Mars EXCEPT ______.A . absence of airB . a lot of fierce creaturesC . lack of drinking waterD . messed-up biological clocks(2)According to scientists, how long does one day on Mars last?A . 24 hours.B . 23 hours and 23 minutes.C . 24 hours and 37 minutes.D . 12 hours and 37 minutes.(3)How did the researchers study what effect living on Mars has on sleep?A . By comparing different mice.B . By analyzing computer data.C . By experiments in spaceships.D . By observing and judging.(4)Life on Mars would seriously mess with your sleep because ________.A . the brain wave activity will be interruptedB . the body’s natural cycles can be shortenedC . hormone production will hurt biological functionsD . the Martian sol is longer than a day on Earth二、任务型阅读5. 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AAfter two years of careful consideration, Robert McCrum has reached a conclusion on his selection of the 100 greatest novels written in English. Take a look at a few in his list. The Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan (1678)A story of a man in search of truth told with the simple clarity and beauty of Bunyan's prose makes this the English classic.Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe (1719)By the end of the 19th century, no book in English literary history had enjoyed more editions and translations. This world-famous novel is a complex literature that one cannot resist. Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift (1726)A great work tha t’s been repeatedly printed, Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels comes third in our list of the best novels written in English.Clarissa by Samuel Richardson (1748)Clarissa is a tragic heroine, pressured by her dishonorable family to marry a wealthy man she dislikes, in the book that Samuel Johnson described as “the first book in the world that shows the knowledge about the human heart.”Tom Jones by Henry Fielding (1749)Tom Jones is a classic English novel that gets the spirit of its age and whose characters are well-known since they have come to represent the society at that time.Emma by Jane Austen (1816)Jane Austen's Emma is her most outstanding work, mixing the best parts of her early books with a deep sense of feelings. The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket by Edgar Allan Poe (1838)Edgar Allan Poe’s only novel - a classic adventure story with supernatural elements - has fascinated and influenced generations of writers.1. What makes the characters in Tom Jones famous?A. Their classic life styles.B. Their different nationalities.C. Their typical spirits of the age.D. Their representation of the society.BIf you could have one superpower, what would it be?Dreaming about whether you would want to read minds, see through walls, or have superhuman strength may sound silly, but it actually gets to the heart of what really matters in your life.Every day in our work, we are inspired by the people we meet doing extraordinary things to improve the world. They have a different kind of superpower that all of us possess: the power to make a difference in the lives of others. We’re not saying that everyone needs to contribute their liv es to the poor. Your lives are busy enough doing homework, playing sports, making friends, seeking after your dreams. But we do think that you can live a more powerful life when you devote some of your time and energy to something much larger than yourself. Find an issue you are interested in and learn more. Volunteer or, if you can, contribute a little money to a cause. Whatever you do, don’t be a bystander. Get involved. You may have the opportunity to make your biggest difference when you’re older. But why not start nowOur own experience working together on health, development, and energy the last twenty years has been one of the most rewarding parts of our lives. It has changed who we are andcontinues to fuel our optimism about how much the lives of the poorest people will improve in the years ahead.4. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 refer to .A. Your life style.B. Your life value.C. Your trouble in life.D. Your life experience.5. Why does the author say they are inspired every day?A. They possess different kinds of superpowers.B. They have got the power to change the world.C. Some people around them are making the world better.D. There are many powerful people in their life and work.6. What does the author stress in Paragraph 5?A. Learning more and contributing more to a cause.B. Rising above self and acting to help others.C. Working hard to get a bigger opportunity.D. Trying your best to help the poor.7. What can be inferred from the last paragraphA. The author believes the lives of the poorest will get better.B. Much more progress will be made in the near future.C. The work on health is the most valuable experience.D. People’s efforts have been mate rially rewarded.CIt was Mother’s Day morning last year and I was doing my shopping at our local supermarket with my five-year-old son, Tenyson. As we were leaving, we found that only minutes earlier an elderly woman had fallen over at the entrance and had hit her head on the concrete. Her husband was with her, but there was blood everywhere and the woman was embarrassed and clearly in shock.Walking towards the scene, Tenyson became very upset about what had happened to the couple. He said to me, “Mum, it’s not much fun falling over in front of everyone.”At the front of the supermarket a charity group had set up a stand selling cooked sausages(香肠) and flowers to raise funds. Tenyson suggested that we should buy the lady a flower. “It will make herfeel better,” he said. I was amazed that he’d come up with such a sweet idea. So we went over to the flower seller and asked her if we could buy a flower for the lady to cheer her up. “Just take it,” she replied. “I can’t take your money for such a wonderful gesture.”By now paramedics(救援人员)had arrived, and were attending the injured woman. As we walked up to her, my son became intimidated by all the blood and medical equipment. He said he was just too scared to go up to her.Instead I gave the f lower to the woman’s husband and told him, “ My son was very upset for your wife and wanted to give her this flower to make her feel better.”At that, the old man started crying and said, “Thank you so much, you have a wonderful son. Happy Mother’s Day to you.”The man then bent down and gave his wife the flower, telling her who it was from. Though badly hurt and shaken, the old lady looked up at Tenyson with love in her eyes and gave him a little smile.8. What dose the author intend to tell us?A. One can never be too careful.B. Actions speak louder than words.C. Love begins with a little smile.D. A small act of kindness brings a great joy.9. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A. The elderly woman was knocked down by Tenyson.B. Tenyson’s idea of buying a flower gained his mother’s support.C. Tenyson’s care for the elderly woman puzzled the flower seller.D. The elderly woman was moved to tears by Tenyson’s gesture.10. The underlined word “intimidated” in the fourth paragraph probably means “___________”.A. astonishedB. struckC. frightenedD. excited11. What would be the best title for the passage?A. Flower PowerB. Mother’s DayC. An Accidental InjuryD. An Embarrassing MomentDDo you sometimes argue about what seems to you to be a simple fact? Do you argue whether it’s cold outdoors or whether the car in front of you is going faster than the speed limit (限速)?If you get into such arguments, try to think about the story about the six blind men and theelephant. The first blind man who felt the elephant’s trunk (象鼻) said it was like a snake. The second who felt the elephant’s side said it was like a wall, while the third said it was like a spear(矛) as he touched the animal’s tusk. The fourth, who took hold of the elephant’s tail insisted that it was like a rope. The fifth man said it looked like a tree as he put his arms around one of the elephant’s legs. The last, who was tall and got hold of the elep hant’s ears, said it was like a huge fan. Each man’s idea of the animal came from his own experience. So if someone disagrees with you about a “simple fact”, it’s often because his experience in the matter is different from yours. To see how hard it is for even one person to make up his mind about a “simple fact”, try this simple experiment. Get three large bowls. Put ice water in one. Put hot water in the second. Put lukewarm water (温水)in the third. Now put your left hand in the hot water. Put your right hand in the lukewarm water. Your right hand will tell you the water is cold. Your left hand will tell you it is hot.12. The man who touched the elephant’s ears must be very_______.A. heavyB. thinC. tallD. strong13. The underlined word “it” in the last line of the paragraph refers to _______.A. your left handB. your right handC. the waterD. the bowl14. What makes people think about simple facts differently?A. People’s wrong ideas.B. People’s different experience.C. Simple facts are different sometimes.D. People often disagree with each other.15. It can be inferred from the passage that we should__________.A. learn from the blind menB. not agree about simple factsC. never think about simple factsD. never decide anything with one side第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AWhen people first walked across the Bering Land Bridge thousands of years ago, dogs were by their sides, according to a study published in the journal Science.Robert Wayne of the University of California, Los Angeles, and Jennifer Leonard of the Smithsonian Institute, used DNA material—some of it unearthed by miners in Alaska—to conclude that today’s domestic dog originated in Asia and accompanied the first humans to the New World about 10,000 to 15,000 years ago. Wayne suggests that man’s best friend may have enabled the tough journey from Asia into North America. “Dogs may ha ve been the reason people made it across the land bridge,” said Wayne. “They can pull things, carry things, defend you from fierce animals, and they’re useful to eat.”Researchers have agreed that today’s dog is the result of the domestication of wolves thousands of years ago. Before this recent study, a common thought about the precise origin of North America’s domestic dog was that Natives domesticated local wolves, the descendents of which now live with people in Alaska, Canada, and the Lower 48.Dog remains from a Fairbanks-area gold mine helped the scientists reach their conclusion. Leonard, an evolutionary biologist, collected DNA from 11 bones of ancient dogs that were locked in permafrost until Fairbanks minersuncovered them in the 1920s. The miners donated the preserved bones to the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, where they remained untouched for more than 70 years. After borrowing the bones from the museum, Leonard and her colleagues used radiocarbon techniques to find the age of the Alaska dogs. They found the dogs all lived between the years of 1450 and 1675 A.D., before Vitus Bering and Aleksey Chirikov who were the first known Europeans to view Alaska in 1741. The bones of dogs that wandered the Fairbanks area centuries ago should therefore be the remains of “pure native American dogs,” Leonard said. The DNA of the Fairbanks dogs would also expose whether they were the descendents of wolves from North America.Along with the Fairbanks samples, the researchers collected DNA from bones of 37 dog specimens from Mexico, Peru, and Bolivia that existed before the arrival of Columbus. In the case of both the Alaska dogs and the dogs from Latin America, the researchers found that they shared the most genetic material with gray wolves of Europe and Asia. This supports the idea of domestic dogs entering the New World with the first human explorers who wandered east over the land bridge.Leonard and Wayne’s study suggests that dogs joined the first humans that made the adventure across the Bering Land Bridge to slowly populate the Americas. Wayne thinks the dogs that made the trip must have provided some excellent service to their human companions or they would not have been brought along. “Dogs must have been useful because they were expensive tokeep,” Wayne said. “They didn’t feed on mice; they fed on meat, which was a very guarded resource.”(1)The underlined word “remains” is closed in meaning to ______.A . leftover foodB . animal wasteC . dead bodiesD . living environment(2)According to the study described in Paragraph 4, we can learn that ______.A . ancient dogs entered North America between 1450 and 1675 ADB . the11 bones of ancient dogs are not from native American dogsC . the bones discovered by the gold miners were from North American wolvesD . the bones studied were not from dogs brought into North America by Europeans (3)What can we know from the passage?A . Native Americans domesticated local wolves into dogs.B . Scientists discovered some ancient dog remains in 1920s.C . Latin America’s dogs are different from North America’s in genes.D . Ancient dogs entered North America across the Bering Land Bridge.(4)The first humans into the New World brought dogs along with them because ______.A . dogs fed on miceB . dogs were easy to keepC . dogs helped protect their resourcesD . dogs could provide excellent service(5)What does the passage mainly talk about ______.A . the origin of the North American dogsB . the DNA study of ancient dogs in AmericaC . the reasons why early people entered AmericaD . the difference between Asian and American dogs3. 阅读短文,完成下列问题。
