1.Too many people fear failure. Some of us let it keep us from trying new things, telling ourselves we’ d be no good at it. Some limit our goals to only what we feel absolutely sure we can accomplish. Others among us try something once and when it doesn’ t work out, we decide that course is not for us. That’ s unfortunate because, according to many top scientists, failure is nothing to fear. Not only is it inevitable, they say, it is even an indispensable ally. “In the research lab,” says John Po-lanyi, the Nobel prize-winning chemist,” failure is a good thing. If everything you try is very successful , it means you’ re playing it safe: you’ re not out on the edge. Failure means that you’re learning. To ask a scientist whether he has experienced failure is like asking an artist whether he has ever made a sketch. The answer is, ‘a million times. ‘That is the price of success. “Failure is not the opposite of success. It’ s more like an ingredient. In Hollywood, thousands of ideas for new TV shows are pitched each year, but only a select few get to the screen, let alone survive their first season. In real life, misses outnumber hits whenever people try something new. Nina Spencer, a motivational speaker and author of Getting Passion out of Your Profession, likes to remind audiences that whenever we try a new skill, we go through four stages. “There’s the point when you don’t know about the skill, and because you don’ t know about it, you’ re no good at it. Eventually, you come to know about the skill, but you’re incompetent to perform it. Then, as long as you think carefully and go slowly, you can do it. Eventually, it becomes so practiced, it’ s easy. “ The secret is not to give up at stage two. In short, the seeds of success almost always flourish best in the well-turned soil of failure. As Charles Kettering, inventor of the modern electric ignition system for cars and the holder of nearly 200 patents, once said, “ failures, repeated failures, are finger-posts on the road to achievements—one fails forward towards success. “1.According to John Polany, a seemingly all-time successful person may in fact______.A.be very adventurousB.be very competitiveC.be very sensitiveD.be very cautious正确答案:D解析:推理题。

Is your mobile phone directory full of phone numbers of people you don't really want to talk to? Do you go out with people from work or school more often than with your real friends? Do you say yes to invitations because you think you should, not because you want to? If you answered yes to at least two ofthese questions, then perhaps you need to "edit your friends".Nowadays people like to spend a lot of time with people at work or classmates at school. The result is that we don't have enough time to see our real, close friends. As our lives get busier, it becomes more important to spend the little free time we have with people we really want to see, people we love and who really love us.Who are the friends you need to edit? A few years ago I read a book about how to get rid of unnecessary possessions(物品). It said you should ask yourself about each thing you have: Is it useful? Do I really like it? Do I feel better every time I look at it? If the answer is no to any one of those questions, you should throw it away. Maybe we should ask similar questions about our friends. What kind of friends will you probably need to edit? Sometimes it's an old friend. Somebody who you used to have a lot in common with, but who, when you meet now, you have very little or nothing to say to. Or it might be a new friend who you get on quite well with, but who is taking up too much of your time. Next time one of these people calls you and suggests a meeting, think "Do I really want to seethis person?", and if the answer is no, say no, and make an excuse. That way you'll have more time to spend with your real friends.1. People need to edit their friends when .A. they have moved to a different areaB. they have no time with their real friendsC. some of their friends don't talk very muchD. their friends are people from work or school2. People don't need to edit their .A. real friendsB. young friendsC. old friendsD. new friends3. What does the writer want to tell us in Paragraph 3?A. We should often throw some possessions.B. Most of our friends are not necessary at all.C. We shouldn't treat our friends as possessions.D. We should ask ourselves who our real friends are. 1—3、BADKWhen people go to England, they must learn somethingabout transportation there. In England, cars, buses and bikes must keep to the left side of the street. Section II Reading( 50 minutes)Part ADirections:Read the following two texts. Answer the questions on each text by choosing A, B, C or D. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.Text 1Rowena and Billy Wrangler are model high school students. They study hard and do extremely well on achievement tests. And next year, Rowena will be attending Harvard University. Billy, her younger brother, hopes to go to Com ell. What makes Rowena and Billy different from most students is that they don't go to school. In fact, they've never been to school. Since kindergarten, they've studied at home. Neither Rowena nor Billy feels as if they've missed out on anything by being taught at home. Like many of more than one million people who receive home schooling in the United States, they feel as if they've gotten a good education. The home-schooling trend began in the U.S. in the 1980s with parents keeping their children out of public schools so they could provide religious education at home. Today, as the home-schooling trend continues to grow, parents are more likely to consider home schooling as an option because they believe schools don't do a very good job of teaching and are occasionally dangerous places. But can parents reallydo a better job?The answer in many cases is yes. In many studies, studentstaught at home ranked average or above average when compared to students who went to public schools. More importantly, these students were often more self-directed and have a greater depth of knowledge. "They are very well prepared for academic challenges," says Patricia Riordan, the dean of admissions at George MasonUniversity. One such student, Robert Conrad, now a sophomore at university, claims he really learned how to study and schedule his time during his eight years of home schooling. Still, not every student is as successful as Robert."For every home-schooling success story, there are an equal number of failures," states Henry Lipscomb, an educational researcher. "There are just so many disadvantages that students taught at home have to overcome. " For example, they have fewer chances to interact with others of their own age. Consequently, they sometimes lack the usual social skills. "No matter what, though," states Lipscomb, "home-schooling is a growing trend. I think we'll be seeing more and more of this. "26. Compared with other students, the most different thing Rowena and Billy do is that________A. they study hardB . they do extremely well on achievement testsC . they never go to schoolD . they feel they have gotten a good education27. At first in the 1980s parents gave home-schooling tochildren for________A. better educationB . religious educationC . safetyD . all the above28. According to the article, what is NOT the advantage of being educated at home?A. Home is a safer place for children.B . Students taught at home are more self-directed.C . Students taught at home have a greater depth of knowledge.D . Students taught at home can go to good universities.29. The Walter thinksA.parents can do a better job than schoolsB . home-schooling will be more and more usefulC . students taught at home make greater achievementsD . home-schooling is good in some aspects30. The best title of this text might be________A. Home-schooling: A Growing TrendB . Home-schooling: A Better ChoiceC . Home-schooling: A Way to SuccessD . Home-schooling: A New Method of EducationText 2A smile is a strong sign of a friendly and open attitude and a willingness to communicate. It is a positive, silent sign sent with the hope the other person will smile back. When you smile, youshow you have noticed the person in a positive way. The result? That person will usually smile back. You might not realize a closed position is the cause of many conversational problems. A common closed position is sitting with your arms and legs crossed and your hand covering your mouth or chin. This is often called the "thinking pose". Ask yourself this question: Are you going to interrupt someone who appears .to be deep in thought? This position gives off "stay away" signs and prevents your main "sign sender" ( your mouth) from being seen by others looking for inviting conversational signs. The open body position is most effective when you place yourself within communicating distance of the other person--that is, within aboutfive feet. Take care, however, not to enter someone's "personal space" by getting too close, too soon.Leaning forward a little while a person is talking shows your interest and how you are listening to what the person is saying. By doing this, you are saying: I hear what you're saying, and I'minterested in--keep talking!Often people will lean back with their hands over their mouth, chin, or behind their head in the "thinking" pose. This position gives off signs of judgment, doubt, and lack of interest from the listener. Since most people do not feel comfortable when they think they are being judged, this leaning-back position serves to prevent the speaker from continuing. In many cultures the most common form of first contact between two people is a handshake. Be the first to extend your hand in greeting. Couple this with a friendly "Hello", a nice smile, and your name and you have made the first step to open the lines of communication.Eye contact should be natural, not forced or overdone. Direct eye contact shows you are listening to the other person and that you want to know about her.31. A person smiles to show________A. he is kind and usefulB . he is happy all the timeC . he is ready to talk with youD . he sees something funny32. According to the text, troubles in communication may result from________A. a dosed body positionB . an open body positionC . no smileD . the main " sign senders"33. Leaning back with your hands behind your head in deep thought while a person is talking________A. shows you are interested in and listening to what the speaker is sayingB . shows you want to keep some distance from the speakerC . makes him think-you are thinking about something elseD . makes him believe you are not interested in his talk34. All of the following gestures encourage communicationexcept________A. leaning forward a little while a person is talkingB . crossing your armsC . looking in others' eyesD . extending your hand in greeting35. From the text we know that________A. communication depends.ads little on verbal language and much on body languageB . gestures always prevent the "sign sender" (mouth)C . we should pay much attention to body languageD . eye contact is always helpful答案及解析26.【答案】c【题型】细节题【解析】题干意为“与其他学生相比,Rowena和Billy最不同寻常的地方是什么?”从文章第一段第五句话“What makes Rowena and Billy differ-ent from most students is that they don’t go to school.”

There are about 105 males born for every 100 females, but this ratio drops to near balance at the age of maturity, and among70-year-olds there are twice as many women as men. But the great universal ofmale mortality is being changed. Now, boy babies survive almost as well as girlsdo. This means that, for the first time, there will be an excess of boys inthose crucial years when they are searching for a mate. More important, anotherchance for natural selection has been removed. Fifty years ago, the chance of ababy surviving depended on its weight. A kilogram toolight or too heavy meant almost certain death. Today it makes almost nodifference. Since much of the variation is due to genes, one more agent ofevolution has gone。

There is another way to commit evolutionary : stay alive, but have fewer children. Few people are as fertile as in the past. Except insome religious communities, very few women have 15 children. Nowadays thenumber of births, like the age of death, has become average. Most of us haveroughly the same number of offspring. Again, differences between people and theopportunity for natural selection to take advantage of it have diminished.India shows what is happening. The country offers wealth for a few in the greatcities and poverty for the remaining tribal peoples. The grand mediocrity oftoday―everyone being the same in survival and number of offspring meansthat natural selection has lost 80% of its power in upper-middle-class Indiacompared to the tribes。

英语真题阅读理解试题及名师解析(三)When a new movement in art attains a certain fashion, it is advisable to find out what its advocates are aiming at, for, however farfetched and unreasonable their principles may seem today, it is possible that in years to come they may be regarded as normal. With regard to Futurist poetry, however, the case is rather difficult, for whatever Futurist poetry may be―even admitting that the theory on which it is based may be right―it can hardly be classed as Literature. This, in brief, is what the Futurist says: for a century, past conditions of life have been conditionally speeding up, till now we live in a world of noise and violence and speed. Consequently, our feelings, thoughts and emotions have undergone a corresponding change. This speeding up of life, says the Futurist, requires a new form of expression. We must speed up our literature too, if we want to interpret modern stress. We must pour out a large stream of essential words, unhampered by stops, or qualifying adjectives, or finite verbs. Instead of describing sounds we must make up words that imitate them; we must use many sizes of type and different colored inks on the same page, and shorten or lengthen words at will.Certainly their descriptions of battles are confused. But it is a little upsetting to read in the explanatory notes that a certain line describes a fight between a Turkish and a Bulgarian officer on a bridge off which they both fall into the river—and then to find that the line consists of the noise of their falling and the weights of the officers: “Pluff! Pluff! A hundred and eighty-five kilograms.”This, though it fulfills the laws and requirements of Futurist poetry, can hardly be classed as Literature. All the same, no thinking man can refuse to accept their first proposition: that a great change in our emotional life calls for a change of expression. The whole question is really this: have we essentially changed?19. This passage is mainly____.[A]a survey of new approaches to art[B]a review of Futurist poetry[C]about merits of the Futurist movement[D]about laws and requirements of literature20. Futurists claim that we must____.[A]increase the production of literature[B]use poetry to relieve modern stress[C]develop new modes of expression[D]avoid using adjectives and verbs22. The author believes that Futurist poetry is____.[A]based on reasonable principles[B]new and acceptable to ordinary people[C]indicative of basic change in human nature[D]more of a transient phenomenon than literature名师解析19. Students of United States history, seeking to identify the circumstances that encouraged the emergence of feminist movements, have thoroughly investigated the mid-nineteenth-century American economic and social condition that affected the status of women. These historians, however, have analyzed less fully the development of specifically feminist ideas and activities during the same period. Furthermore, the ideological origins of feminism in the United State have been obscured because, even when historians did take into account those feminist ideas and activities occurring within the United States, they failed to recognize that feminism was then a truly international movement actually centered in Europe. American feminist activists who have been described as “solitary” and “individual theorists” were in reality connected to a movement — utopian socialism — which was already popularizing feminist ideas in Europe during the two decades that culminated in the first women’s rights conference held at Seneca Falls, New York, in 1848. Thus, a complete understanding of the origins and development of nineteenth-century feminism in the United States requires that the geographical focus be widened to include Europe and that the detailed study already made of social conditions be expanded to include the ideological development of feminism. The earliest and most popular of the utopian socialists were the Saint-Simonians. The specifically feminist part of Saint-Simonianism has, however, been less studied than the group’s contribution to early socialism. This is regrettable on two counts. By 1832 feminism was the central concern of Saint-Simonianism and entirely absorbed its adherents’ energy; hence, by ignoring its feminism, European historians have misunderstood Saint-Simonianism. Moreover, since many feminist ideas can be traced to saint-simonianism European historians’ appreciation of later feminism in France and the United States remained limited.Saint-Simon’s followers, many of whom were women, based their feminism on an interpretation of his project to reorganize the globe by replacing brute force with the rule of spiritual powers. The new world order would be ruled together by a male, to represent reflection, and a female, to represent sentiment. This complementarity reflects the fact that, while the Saint-Simonians did not reject the belief that there were innate differences between men and women, they nevertheless foresaw an equally important social and political role for both sexes in their utopia.Only a few Saint-Simonians opposed a definition of sexual equality based on gender distinction. This minority believe that individuals of both sexes were bornsimilar in capacity and character, and they ascribed male-female differences to socialization and education. The envisioned result of both currents of thought, however, was that women would enter public life in the new age and that sexual equality would reward men as well as women with an improved way of life.1. It can be inferred that the author consider those historians who describe early feminists in the United States as “solitary” to be[A] insufficiently familiar with the international origins ofnineteenth-century American feminist thought.[B] overly concerned with the regional diversity of feminist ideas in the period before 1848.[C] not focused narrowly enough in their geographical scope.[D] insufficiently aware of the ideological consequences of the Seneca Falls conference.2. The author’s attitude toward European historians w ho have studied the Saint-Simonians is primarily one of[A] approval of the specific focus of their research.[B] disapproval of their lack of attention to the issue that absorbed most of the Saint-Simonians’ energy after 1832.[C] approval of their general focus on social conditions.[D] disapproval of their lack of attention to links between the Saint-Simonians and their American counterparts.3. The author mentions all of the following as characteristic of theSaint-Simonians EXCEPT[A] The group included many women among its members.[B] The group believed in a world that would be characterized by sexual equality.[C] The group was among the earliest European socialist groups.[D] Most members believed that women and men were inherently similar in ability and character.4. It can be inferred from the text that the Saint-Simonians envisioned a utopian society having which of the following characteristics?[A] It would be worldwide.[B] It would emphasize dogmatic religious principles.[C] It would most influence the United States.[D] It would have armies composed of women rather than of men.5. According to the text, which of the following would be the most accuratedescription of the society envisioned by most Saint-Simonians?[A] A society in which women were highly regarded for their extensive education.[B] A society in which the two genders played complementary roles and had equal status.[C] A society in which women did not enter public life.[D] A social order in which a body of men and women would rule together on the basis of their spiritual power.1.

1.For most people, shopping is still a matter of wandering down the street for loading a cart in a shopping mall. Soon, that will change. Electronic commerce is growing fast and will soon bring people more choice. There will, however, be a cost: protecting the consumer from cheating will be harder. Many governments therefore want to extend strict regulations to the electronic world. But politicians would be wiser to see cyberspace as a basis for a new era of corporate self-regulation. Consumers in rich countries have grown used to the idea that the government takes responsibility for everything from the stability of the banks to the safety of the drugs or their rights to refund when goods are faulty. But governments cannot enforce national laws on businesses whose only presence is on the screen. Even in a country where a clear right to compensation exists, the on-line customer in Tokyo, say, can hardly go to New York to extract a refund for a clothes purchase. One answer is for governments to cooperate more: to recognize each other’s rules. But that requires years of work and volumes of detailed rules. And plenty of countries have rules too fanciful for sober states to accept. There is, however, another choice. Let the electronic businesses do the regulation themselves. They do, after all, have a self-interest in doing so. In electronic commerce, a reputation for honest dealing will be a valuable competitive asset. Governments, too, may compete to be trusted. For instance, customers ordering medicines on-line may prefer to buy from the United States because they trust the strict screening of the Food and Drug Administration: or they may decide that the FDA’ s rules are too strict, and buy from Switzerland instead. Consumers will still need to use their judgment. But precisely because the technology is new, electronic shoppers are likely for a while to be a lot more cautious than consumers of the normal sort—and the new technology will also make it easier for them to complain when a company lets them down. In this way, at least, the arrival of cyberspace may argue for fewer consumer protection laws, not more.1.According to the author, what will be the best policy for electronic commerce?A.Self-regulation by the business.B.Strict consumer protection laws.C.Close international cooperation.D.Government protection.

Mintey's find much of.which now sits in the British Museum-earned him roughly $350,000, enough to quit his job with a small manu- facturer and spend more time pursuing lost treasure. But digging up the past is controversial in Britain. In many European countries, metal detecto- fists, or people using metal detectors, face tough regulations. In the U. K., however, officials in- troduced a scheme in 1997 encouraging hobbyists to report their discoveries (except for those fall- ing under the definition of treasure, like Mintey's find, which they are required to report)--but al- lowing them to keep what they find, or receive a reward.Last year, a hidden store was uncoveredin a field outside Birmingham. It consists of more than 1,500 gold and silver objects from the sev- enth century and was valued at more than $4.5 million. While local museums hurry to raise enough money to keep the find off the open market, it sits in limbo, owned by the Crown but fa- cing claims by the landowner and the metal detectorist who found it.The find marks the latest battleground in the increasingly heated conflict between the country's 10,000-20,000 metal detectorists and the museum workers determined to protect its precious old objects. Supporters say the scheme stems the loss of valuable information about precious old ob-jects, while opponents argue that metal detectorists don't report everything. The debate centers on the larger question of who owns the past. "There's been a slow move over the centuries that precious old things belong to us all," says Professor Christopher Chippindale of Cambridge University. But in Britain at least, the temptation of buried treasure could change all that.46. 1.Isabel has turned down two job offers in the past year. In 2006, she started her own consulting practice, but by 2008, most of her larger clients had to drop her because of the economy. In 2011, she was undertaking irregular assignments and knew she needed a steady job. The first job she considered was Director of HR for a company in Utah. After the initial interviews, she felt the job fit her except for the location. Still, she flew west to meet the hiring manager. The hiring manager explained that Isabel was the top candidate for the job but that, before she continued with the process, she should better understand the firm’ s culture. She directed Isabel to several videos of the company’ s CEO, who regularly appeared in front of the company in costume as part of morale building exercises and expected his senior leaders to do the same. “Even though I was desperate for a job, I knew I couldn’ t do that,” Isabel says. She called the recruiter to turn down the job and explained that she didn’ t feel there was a cultural fit. A few months later, she interviewed for another job: a director of employee relations at a local university. After several interviews, the hiring manager told her the job was hers if she wanted it. The job had many positives: it was a low-stress environment, it offered great benefits, and the university was an employee-friendly place. But the job was relatively junior despite the title and Isabel worried it wouldn’t be challenging enough. Finally, she turned it down. “It would be great to have a paycheck and great benefits but I would definitely have trouble sleeping at night,” she says. In both cases, she was frank with the hiring managers about why she wasn’ t taking the jobs. “ In the past, it felt like dating, I was worried about hurting people’ s feelings,” she says. However, they appreciated her frankness and thanked her for her honesty. She says it was hard to turn down the jobs and it was a risk for her financially but she felt she had to.1.In 2011, Isabel_________.A.did consulting now and thenB.found a job close to her homeC.refused several job interviewsD.ran a successful consulting firm正确答案:A解析:推断题。

When a novel literary idea appears, people should try to_____.[A]determine its purposes[B]ignore its flaws[C]follow the new fashions[D]accept the principles21. This passage is mainly____.

[A]a survey of new approaches to art [B]a review of Futurist poetry [C]about merits of the Futurist movement [D]about laws and requirements of literature

20. When a novel literary idea appears, people should try to_____.

[A]determine its purposes 确定它的目标[B]ignore its flaws 忽视它的缺陷[C]follow the new fashions 跟随这个新的潮流[D]accept the principles 接受原则【答案】 A【考点】事实细节题。

21. Futurists claim that we must____.

[A]increase the production of literature 加大文学的产出[B]use poetry to relieve modern stress 用诗歌来减轻现代的压力[C]develop new modes of expression [D]avoid using adjectives and verbs

22. The author believes that Futurist poetry is_____.

[A]based on reasonable principles [B]new and acceptable to ordinary people [C]indicative of basic change in human nature [D]more of a transient phenomenon than literature与其说是文学不如说是一种暂时的现象【答案】 D【考点】中心主旨题。
