From my second grade on, there was one event I feared every year: the piano recital(独奏会)和尾句的With his first recital, my father taught me more about courage and determination than all the words he used those 30plus years ago.表明了文章的主旨:作者本来很反感弹钢琴,但是父亲的行为感动了自己。作者认为他的实际行动比30多年以前说的话更有感染力。

In the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what “keeping up with the Joneses” is about. It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbors.
The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $ 125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighborhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbors.

Jackie is perhaps the most easily annoyed koala(考拉 at the Featherdale Wildlife Park in southern Australia. All the koalas there are unhappy and complaining. You would be too if you were used to night activities and someone kept waking you up all day while you were trying to sleep it off. That`s right--sleep it off. The average koala is always half asleep because it feeds on the leaves of a special kind that makes it sleepy.
The reason Jackie and her fellow koalas are repeatedly awoken from their deep sleep is so they can be hugged and photographed by tourists, who make the trips to Featherdale and an increasing number of other national parks for just that special experience. Whatever department in the Aussie government in charge of such things is now moving to make the practice illegal, which is understandable. How would you react, my friend, if you were trying to sleep off a dozen times and some round, furry creature smelling of grass kept waking you?

I was in the middle of the Amazon (亚马逊) with my wife, who was there as a medical researcher. We flew on a small plane to a faraway village. We did not speak the local language, did not know the customs, and more often than not, did not entirely recognize the food. We could not have felt more foreign.
We were raised on books and computers, highways and cell phones, but now we were living in a village without running water or electricity It was easy for us to go to sleep at the end of the day feeling a little misunderstood.
Then one perfect Amazonian evening, with monkeys calling from beyond the village green, we played soccer. I am not good at soccer, but that evening it was wonderful. Everyone knew the rules. We all spoke the same language of passes and shots. We understood one another perfectly. As darkness came over the field and the match ended, the goal keeper, Juan, walked over to me and said in a matter-of-fact way, “In your home, do you have a moon too?”

The “Clean Your Plate” campaign was started by nongovernmental organizations and activists, which urged people to save food by not wasting anything on the dining table. The campaign, launched on the microblog, was soon joined by millions of netizens across China to fight against food waste.
The estimated annual waste of grain in China reaches 50 million tons, enough to feed about 200 million people for a year.
People from across China support the campaign. The Central Government has promised to take measures to reduce food waste, take the lead in saving food and follow a simple working style.
More and more Chinese are saying “no” to food waste. Staff members of a restaurant set off a campaign encouraging customers to stop food waste in Qingdao, Shandong Province, on Jan. 24. “Did you empty the dishes today?” has become the most popular question in China. Showing an empty dish also turns a new fashion among Chinese netizens.
In some restaurants, there are signs reminding the diners not to waste food. Some even offer awards to the customers who eat all their food, as part of the campaign to reduce waste. More and more restaurants kindly remind and encourage customers to take their leftovers away.

An elderly carpenter(木匠)was ready to retire. He told his employers of his plans to leave the housebuilding business to live a more leisurely life with his wife and children. His employer was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one more house as a personal favour. The carpenter said yes, but it was obvious that his heart was already not in his work. He built it impatiently and used poor materials. It was unfortunate for a wonderful career to end like that.
