I remember the day when I first learned to ride a bike. It was a frightening, yet fun experience. My granddad was the one who taught me and he helped me when I got hurt. The first time I got on a bike, I had no idea what I was doing, and just about everything went wrong. My granddad told me to just put my feet on the pedals and start pedaling (骑自行车). He also told me he would hold onto the back of the bike the whole time, yet he didn’t.
Though I knew there were a lot of difficulties on the way to mastering the skills in riding a bike, I believed I could do well with my granddad’s help. After all, riding a bike was what I wanted to do eagerly.

As I looked 17 ( close ) at this girl, I found that she was fixed on her chair. I then realized she had no arms or legs , just a head, a neck and upper body, 18 ( dress ) in a little white skirt. As the couple wheeled her up to me, I turned my head toward the girl. When I took the money from her grandparents, I looked back 19 the girl, who was giving me the most optimistic, largest smile I had ever seen. All of a sudden, her handicap was gone and all I saw was this beautiful girl, 20 smile just melted me 21 almost instantly gave me a completely new sense of 22 life is all about. She took me from a poor, unhappy college student and 23 ( bring ) me into her world; a world of smiles, love and 24 ( warm ). I’m a successful business man now and whenever I think about the troubles of the world, I think about that little girl and the remarkable lesson about life that she taught 25 .第三节阅读理解(共20小题,每题2分,共40分)AThere are stories about two U.S . presidents,Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren, which attempt to explain the American English term OK.We don’t know if either story is true, but they are both interesting. The first explanation is based on the fact that President Jackson had very little education. In fact,he had difficulty reading and writing. When important papers came to Jackson,he tried to read them and then had his assistants explain what they said.If he approved of a paper.he would write” all correct” on it.The problem was that he didn’t know how to spell. So what he really wrote was “ol korekt”.After a while,he shortened that term to “OK”.The second explanation is based on the place where President Van Buren was born,Kinderhook,New York.Van Bnren’s friends organized a club to help him become President They called the club the Old Kinderhook Club, and anyone who supported Van Buren was called “OK”.26.The authorA. believes both of the stories B.doesn’t believe a word of the storiesC.is not sure whether the stories are true D. is telling the stories just for fun 27. According to the passage,President JacksonA.couldn’t draw up any documents at allB. didn’t like to read important papers by himselfC.often had his assistants sign documents for himD .wasn’t good at reading, writing or spelling28.According to the first stor y, the term “OK”A. was approved of by President JacksonB.was the title of some Official documentsC.was first used by President JacksonD.was an old way to spell“all correct’’29. According to the second story, the term “OK”A.was the short way to say “old Kinderhook Club”B.meant the place where President Van Buren was bornC.was the name of Van Buren’s clubD.was used to call Van Buren’s supporters in the election30.According to the second story.the term “OK” was first used __ A.by Van BurenB.in a presidential electionC.to organize the Old Kinderhook ClubD.by the members of the “Old Kinderhook Club”BIf we were asked exactly what we were doing a year ago,we should probably have to say that we could not remember But if we had kept a book and had written in it an account of what we did each day,we should be able to give an answer to the question. It is the same in history Many things have been forgotten because we do not have any written account of them Sometimes men did keep a record of the most important happenings in their country, but often it was destroyed by fire or in a war.Sometimes there was never any written record at all because the people of that time and place did not know how to Write. For example,we know a good deal about the people who lived in China 4,000 years ago, because they could write and leave written records for those who lived after them. But we know almost nothing about the people who lived even 200 years ago in central Africa.because they had not learned to write.Sometimes.of course, even if the people cannot write, they may know something of the past. They have heard about it from older people, and often songs and dances and stories have been made about the most important happenings, and these have been sung and acted and told for many generations For most people are proud to tell what their fathers did in the past. This we may call ’remembered history’.Some of it has now been written down. It is not so exact or so valuable to us as written history is,because words are much more easily changed when used again and again in speech than when copied in writing. But where there are no written records, such spoken stories are often very helpful.31. Which of the following ideas is not suggested in the passage? A.“Remembered history”,compared with written history,is less reliable B.Written records of the past play the most important role in our learning of the human history.C.A written account of our daily activities helps US to be able to answer many questions.D.Where there are no written records.there is no history.32.We know very little about the central Africa 200 years ago because ___ A.there was nothing worth being written down at that timeB .the people there ignored the importance of keeping a recordC.the written records were perhaps destroyed by a fireD.the people there did not know how to write33.“Remembered history” refers to ___.A.history based on a person’s imaginationB. stories of important happenings passed down from mouth to mouthC. songs and dances about the most important eventsD. both B and C34.“Remembered history” is regarded as valuable only when ____.A. it is written down B .no written account is availableC.it proves to be time D.people are interested in it35 .The passage suggests that we could have learned much more about our past thanwe do now if the ancient people had _____A.kept a written record of every past eventB. not burnt their written records in warsC.told exact stories of the most important happeningsD.made more songs and dancesCTrees are useful to man in three very important ways:they provide him wood andother products;they give him shade;and they help to prevent drought(干旱)and floods.Unfortunately,in many parts of the world, man has not realized that the third of these services is the most important. In his eagerness to draw quick profit from the trees,he has cut them down in large numbersTwo thousand years ago,a rich and powerful country cut down its trees to build warships, with which to gain itself an empire It gained the empire but, without its trees, its soil became bare and poor. When the empire fell to pieces, the country found itself faced by floods and starvation.Even where a government realizes the importance of a plentiful supply of trees,it is difficult sometimes to make the people realize this. They cut down the trees but are too careless to plant and look after new trees So,unless the government has a good system of control,or can educate the people, the forests slowly disappearThis does not only mean that there will be fewer trees. The results are even more serious:for where there are trees, their roots break the soil up,allowing the rain to sink in,and also bind the soil. This prevents the soil from being washed away. But where there are no trees, the rainfalls on hard ground and flows away on the surface, and this causes floods and the rain carries away the rich topsoil in which crops grow When aII the topsoil is gone.nothing remains but worthless desert.36.Trees are useful to man mainly in three ways, the most important of which is that they can ___A. keep him from the hot sunshine B.enable him to build warships C.make him draw quick profit from them D .protect him from droughts and floods 37.It’s a great pity that ____A.man is only interested in building empiresB.man is eager to profit from treesC.man hasn’t realized the importance of trees to himD. man hasn’t found out that he has lost all trees38.Sooner or later the forests will disappear ______.A. unless a country has a plenty supply of treesB.unless people stop cutting down their treesC.unless aIl people are taught the importance of planting treesD.unless the government punishes those who cut trees instead of planting them 39.The word “bind” in Paragraph 5 means“_____”A.to wash away B.to make wet C.to make stay together D.to improve40. When there is a heavy rain.trees can help to prevent floods.as they can. A.keep rain from falling down to soft ground B,cause the soil to allow rainwater to sink inC.prevent the soil from being washed away D .make the topsoil stick togetherDLike most people,I was brought up to look upon life as a process of getting It was not until in my late thirties that I made this important discovery:giving-away makes life so much more exciting You need not worry if you lack money This is how I experimented with giving-away.If an idea for improving the window display of a neighborhood store flashes to me,I step in and make the suggestion to the storekeeper. One discovery I made about giving-away is that it is almost impossible to give away anything in this world without getting something back, though the return often comes in all unexpected form. One Sunday morning the local post office delivered an important special delivery letter to my home, though it was addressed to me at my Office.I wrote the postmaster a note of appreciation More than a year later I needed a post—office box for a new business I was starting I was told at the window that there were no boxes left, and that my name would have to go on a long waiting list.As I was about to leave, the postmaster appeared in the doorway. He had overheard(无意中听到)our conversation.“Wasn’t it you that wrote US that letter a year ago about delivering a special delivery to your home?” I said yes “Well, you certainly are going to have a box in this post office if we have to make one foryou. You don’t know what a letter like that means to us. We usually get nothing but complaints.’’41.From the passage,we understand that ______A the author did not understand the importance of giving until he was in late thirtiesB.the author was like most people who were mostly receivers rather than givers C.the author received the same education as most people during his childhood D.the author liked most people as they looked upon life as a process of getting 42.According to the author _____A giving means you will lack moneyB the excitement of giving can bring you moneyC you don’t have to be rich in order to giveD.when you give away money, you will be rich43.The author would make the suggestion to the storekeeper ___A.in writing B.in person C in the window display D.about the neighborhood44.When the author needed a post-office box,______A.he had to put his name on a waiting listB.he wrote the postmaster a note of appreciationC.many people had applied for post-office boxes before himD.he asked the postmaster to make one for him45.In reply to the postmaster’s question.the author said ______A.it was the special delivery B.it was the post-office boxC.it was the note of appreciation he wrote D it was he who wrote him a letter a year ago第四节:信息匹配(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)请阅读下列应用文和相关信息,并按照要求匹配信息。

possibly, Wang said, because many of these people may have taken those jobs out of financial need rather than choice. He noted that the lack of benefit could also stem from the fact that these retirees had to adjust to an unfamiliar job position or had to make lifestyle changes.Bridge work, particularly in one ,s accustomed field, may benefit physical and mental health for a number of reasons, according to Wang.In general, he explained, such work mayhelp older adults maintain the active lifestyles they had during their careers and decrease any stress they might feel from the transition into retirement.Wang said, "When it comes to mental health, for instance, bridge work may help by allowing people to keep some of the ,role identity , that they have formed over their careers.〞Staying active in general, not only through work, can also benefit retirees , physical health, Wang noted. He added, however, that any mental health benefits are likely to depend on the type of activity - Thesevehicles were electric, ran on two wheels instead of fourand held only two passengers. Thanks to their tiny size, six of the vehicles would fit in a parking spot. If the ideaof parking such a small car makes you nervous, don ,t worry: these cars can park themselves. And they can return to their owners when controlled by a button on a cell phone. The vehicle is called the EN V (Electric Networked Vehicle). It is built by General Motors, or GM, and it points to what future vehicles might be like. It is designed to be energy saving, solve environmental problems and help ease traffic jams, parking and safety concerns. The automaker says its next concept car (概念车) will help drivers get whatever they want. According to GM, the company has also designed an electric vehicle named Lean Machine. However, it is a small three wheeler and this single seater vehicle looks like a motorcycle. One day, such small, electric vehicles might safely carry people around, especially in crowded cities.Scientists and engineers are finding new ways to make cars safer, smarter and more efficient, or use less energy. New cars may help you keep track of your health by reminding you to take medicine. If it ,s electric, your car may send you a message reminding you to recharge it. Cars will talk to other cars, your computer, your phone and your iPad. They ,ll help drivers save energy, watch out for other drivers and avoid walkers on the streets. This is the future of vehicles: safer, smarter and more energy saving. Besides, they might even drive themselves down the highway or through a city. Let us examine some of the expressions that use “hand”.We will get a hand in this way. “To get a hand in” is to begin a job, to begin to know something about it. When we learn completely, we will be able to do it hands down. If we do the job well, we may end up with the upper hand. On the other hand, if the situation gets out of hand, it is out of control. We must consider another way of expressing phrase---- to hand it to someone. For example, I must hand it to you for understanding what we have discussed this far. You can also lend a hand to someone but without really giving up your hand. You lend a hand when you help someone. If someone is kind enough to lend us a hand then we surely do not want to bite the hand that feeds us. We do not want to repay his kindness by treating him badly. Now, we have a fr ee hand to continue examining other “hand” expressions. It means you are free to act without getting permission from someone else.Maybe you can find a friend who wants to take a hand in our project. It would have to be someone who was interested in these expressions. Your friend may want to work hand in glove with us. That is good because that means he wants to work as closely with us as a glove covers the hand. Of course, there is a danger that he may look at our project and decide to take it in hand. That means he wants to tale it over. If that happens, we may throw up our hands because the situation seams hopeless. In fact, we may decide that it is time for us to end this project to wash our hands of “ hand” expressions.46.We are ready to do a c ertain job, we may say; Let’s ______________.A. get out of handB. get a hand inC. lend a handD. take a hand in47.Which of the following has an unpleasant meaning?A. Hands downB. bite the hand that feeds usC. take a hand inD. hand in glove48.Something is so easy to do. So you can do it____________.A. hands downB. on the other handC. the upper handD. hand in glove49.What is the writer’s purpose in writing the passage?A. To tell us the fact that there are many phrases with “hands”.B. To prove the importance of the word “ hand ”.C. To tell us some phrases with “ hand ”.D. To make us laugh.B篇If there is one thing I’m quite sure about, it is th at in a hundred years from now we still be reading newspapers. Not those newspapers are a necessity. Even now some people get most of the news from the television or have the radio switched on in the background or in the car. Many buy a paper only on Saturday or Sunday. But for most people a newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation. The basic British character won’t change, and one of the characteristics of the British is that we don’t much like talking to each other when w e get up. So what better way is there to keep yourself thinking in the morning than to wrap yourself in a newspaper?Over the past couple of centuries, human beings have developed a close relationship with the newspaper. It has become as natural as breathing or enjoying the sun. And it is not just the British who love newspapers. On suburban trains in Calcutta, for instance, just one person in the whole car will buy a newspaper and read aloud the best bits to his fellow passengers, much to everybody’s e njoyment. The nature of what is news may change. What essentially (本质上) makes news is what affects our lives and the big political stories, the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters, will continue much the same. Ithink there will be mo re coverage of scientific research, though. It’s already happening in areas that may directly affect our lives, like genetic engineering. In the future I think there will be more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do, whether it’s lov e or depression. Wedevelop a better understanding of how the brain operates and what our feelings really are. It’s quite possible that in the next century newspaper will be transmitted electronically from the national equivalents of Fleet Street (伦敦的舰队街,以报馆集中而著称) and printed out in our own homes. In fact, I’m pretty sure that that is how it will happen in future. You’ll be probably selecting from a menu, making up your own bespoke newspaper by picking out the things you want to read and say. You might even have an intelligent screening device (装置) to do the job for you.I think people have got it wrong when they talk about the competition between the different media. They actually have a relationship, feeding off each other. It was once predicted that television would kill off newspapers, which hasn’t happened. What is read on the printed page is more enduring (持久的) than pictures on a flickering screen or sound lost in the sky. And asfor the Internet, it’s never really satisfying to read something j ust on a screen.50. The author of the passage is most probably from _______________.A. RussiaB. IndiaC. BritainD. America51. According to the passage, the future of newspapers ____________.A. will be mainly connected with scientific researchB. will report more important political activitiesC. will directly cover more on scientific researchD. will build a bridge between different people52. The underlined part “bespoke newspaper” of the passage probably refers to _____________.A. a newspaper which dares to report the truthB. a newspaper edited to one’s own interestC. a newspaper edited and published for the publicD. a newspaper which only covers the life of family members53. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A. It was centuries ago that newspapers came into being .B. Televisions have taken the place of newspapers .C. The Internet will gradually take the place of newspapers.D. The nature of news may remain the same over generations. 1-5 ADDDA 6-10.CAADC11-15.DDCBB16-20BAACA 21-25 ACAAA26~45 BACDA BDABC CABDC AACCD46-53 BBAC CCBA看了人教版高三英语选修6Unit 3测试试卷及答案的人还看:1.高中英语完形填空试题及答案2.高中英语阅读专项试题3.2021年高考英语全国Ⅰ卷试题及答案4.高中英语完形阅读练习题及答案感谢您的阅读,祝您生活愉快。

Free yourself from remembering every one. Few of the people in mass introductions expect you to remember their names. Another way is to limit yourself to learning just first names. Last names can come later.Go early.Consider going early to conferences, parties and classes. Sometimes just a few people show up on time. That's fewer names for you to remember. And as more people arrive, you can hear them being introduced to others -- an automatic review for you.56.How will most people feel when you try hard to remember their names?A. They will be moved.B. They will be annoyed.C. They will be delighted.D. They will be discouraged.57. Many people even wear special clothes for dinner. So if you are asked out to dinner, you must find out whether you are expected to wear a formal suit. You would feel upset if, when you got there, you were the only person in ordinary clothes.Dinner is generally served at about half past seven. All the members of the family sit down together and are on their best behavior. The guest of honor will sit on the right of the lady of the house. There are two schools of thought as to the seating of the hostess. One is that she sits at the foot of the table but this may mess up the man-woman-man setting order. The other way is for the guest of honor to sit at the foot and the hostess to sit on his right. The wife of the guest of honor will sit on the right of the host. This is subject to change according to the wishes of your employer.During the meal when conversation is carried on, you should try to get into conversation with the personon your right or left, but you should not try to talk to someone who is a long way from you.Don’t forget to drop your hosts a thank-you note or make a brief phone call.60. If you and your parents go out to dinner, ______.A. you will sit on the right of the housewifeB. your father will sit on the right of the housewifeC. your mother will sit on the left of the housewifeD. all of you will sit on the left of the housewife61.. The motor car accident happened in Wenzhou, China's eastern province of Zhejiang. It caused four carriages to fall off a bridge which is at least 30 metres high from the ground. 40 people have died in the accident. Among them were 2 foreigners: an Italian woman, Assunta Liguori, and a Chinese American, Cao Erxing. So far, most of the 39 bodies have been claimed by their relatives, based on ID cards, clothes and other characteristics, but the results of DNA tests are coming out in about one week or two. Another 210 people have been taken to hospitals in Wenzhou after the accident. The accident study shows that it is the lightning strike that caused the big accident: the first train lost power because of a lightning strike and had to stop on the rail way. And after a few minutes it was soon hit from the back by another train following it.After the accident, questions have been raised over “what caused the accident” and “how to do with it”. During a visit to Wenzhou, where 39 people have been killed last weekend, Premier Wen calls for an transparent investigation into the cause of the accident, and he once again emphasized(强调) the importance of putting safety first in the country’s development.64. They can actually be quite lazy! Greyhounds are good at fast races but not long-distance running. They so need regular exercise but they like to run for a short burst and then get back on the bed or a comfortable seat. Another misunderstanding is that greyhounds must be aggressive(好斗的) because they are big in size. In fact greyhounds love people and are gentle with children.Greyhounds can live for 12-14 years but usually only race for two or three years, and after that they make great pets. They don’t need a lot of space, don’t make a lot of noise, and don’t eat a lot for their size.Normally, greyhounds can be as tall as 90cm. There is, however, a small-sized greyhound, which stands only 33cm. Greyhounds come in a variety of colors. Grey and yellowish-brown are the most common. Other include black, white, blue, red and brown or a mix of these.Greyhounds have smooth body coats, low bod y fat and are very healthy. Because they’re slim(苗条的) they don’t have the leg problems like other dogs the same height. But they do feel the cold, especially since they would much rather be at home in bed than walking around outside.69. The text is written mainly _________.A. to tell people how to raise greyhoundsB. to let people know more about greyhoundsC. to explain why greyhounds are aggressiveD. to describe greyhounds of different colors70. It can be inferred that grey hounds_______.A. love big doghousesB. like staying in bed all dayC. make the best guard dogsD. need some exercise outdoors71. Why does the author say that greyhounds make great pets?A. They are big in sizeB. They live a very long life.C. They can run races for some time.D. They are quiet and easy to look after.EBritain is famous for its rainy weather, buy in June, 2007, many parts of the country are experiencing much more rain than they have ever seen before.Torrential downpours (倾盆大雨) have caused rivers to burst their banks, roads have been closed and many people have been evacuated from their homes because of the floods. The worst hit area seems to be the north of England. There have even been deaths as people got stuck in the rain or were washed away by the floodwaters.Flood warnings have been issued in many parts of the UK and it is said that over a month’s worth of rain has fallen in just the last couple of days.In the Glastonbury festival, everyone was wearing wellies(惠灵顿长靴) and there have been many pictures in the newspapers of people covered from head to toe in mud. It rained throughout the festival and it didn’t take long for the site to turn into a mud bath.June also sees the start of the Wimbledon tennis tournament. The start of play on the first day was put off by half an hour or so because of the rain and had to be halted again mid---afternoon for a couple of hours. There are no floods in the London region though, just frequent showers.People in Britain are used to having unpredictable weather--- cold rainy summer days and warmer winter months. However this amount of rain and destruction is even more unexpected.People can only hope that the rain will stop soon and the sun will come out, so they can eventually start to enjoy a nicer summer.72.Which of the following may be TRUE according to the passage?A.It often rains in summer in Britain.B.It is often very hot in winter in Britain.C.It doesn’t often rain in summer in Britain.D.It had stopped raining when the author wrote this passage.73. Teaching children to read is not passing reading on to them. It is certainly not endless hours spent in activities about reading. Douglas insists that "reading cannot be taught directly and schools should stop trying to do the impossible97.Teaching and learning are two entirely different processes. They differ in kind and function. The function of teaching is to create the conditions and the climate that will make it possible for children to devise the most efficient system for teaching themselves to read・ Teaching is also apublic activity. It can be seen and observed・Learning to read involves all that each individual does to make sense of the world of printed language・ Almost all of it is private, for learning is an occupation of the mind, and that process is not open to public scrutiny・If teacher and learner roles are not interchangeable, what then can be done through teaching that will aid the child in the quest for knowledge? Smith has one principal nile for all teaching instructions・“Make learning to read easy, which means making reading a meaningful, enjoyable and frequent experience for children.^When the roles of teacher and learner are seen for what they are, then much of the pressure and feeling of failure for both is eliminated. Learning to read is made easier when teachers create an environment where children are given the opportunity to solve the problem of learning to read by reading.1.The problem with the reading course as mentioned in the first paragraph is that _____ ・A.it is one of the most difficult school coursesB.students spend few hours in readingC.reading is neglectedD.too much time is spent in teaching about reading2.The teaching of reading will be successful if _____ ・A.parents can improve conditions at home for the studentsB.teachers can enable students to develop their own ways of readingC.teachers can devise the most efficient system for readingD.leachers can make their teaching activities observable3・ The underlined word "scrutiny^ most probably means “ __A. hopeB. observationC. control D・ suspicion4.According to the passage, learning to read will no longer be a difficult task when _____ ・A.children become highly motivatedB.teacher and learner roles are not interchangeableC・ teachers help children in the search for knowledgeD・ reading enriches children's experience5.The main idea of the passage is that _____ ・A.teachers should do as little as possible in helping students learn to readB.teachers should encourage students to read as widely as possibleC・ reading ability is something acquired rather than taughtD・ reading is more complicated than generally believedBA Tight SituationSometimes funny memories are the most special way to remember a beloved lover. It helps take away some of the feeling of loss. Before he passed away, my husband loved to share this story with our friends. Now, it makes me smile to share this story with you.Our neighbors son was getting married in 1971 at a church, and we were invited・We immediately rushed into the store, and I bought a nice pink dress with a jacket. The dress was a littletight, but I had a month before the June 30 wedding and I would lose a few pounds.June 29 came and, of course, I had not lost a single pound; in fact, I had gained two. But I thought a new girdle would solve my problem・ So on our way to the wedding, we stopped once again at the store. I ran in and told the clerk I needed a large girdle・The clerk turned the box around with the girdle, marked "L”, and asked if I would like to try it on. “Oh, no, large will fit just right. I won't need to try it on.MThe next morning was hot, so I waited to get dressed until about forty-five minutes before the time to go. I opened the girdle box only to find a new $49.95 girdle in a small size. Since it was too late to find another one and the dress wouldn^t fit right without a girdle, a fight broke out between me and the girdle. Have you ever tried to shake twenty pounds of potatoes into a five-pound bag? Finally, my husband, laughing like crazy, got hold of each side and shook me down into it, and I was ready to go.As we walked into the church, he asked if I could make it. Now, he was getting worried because I was breathing strangely. I lold him that it would last one hour, twenty-two minutes and eight and one half seconds——the minister blessed everything except my girdle! My knees were blue and my legs lost all feeling. My husband was asking questions and trying to comfort me.As soon as the minister pronounced them mamed, I rushed out with my husband・“Please, jusl get me out of here!" I said・We ran out to our car, and once there he opened the front and back passenger doors against the next car. Right there, before God and the wedding party, I took off that girdle. Then the girdle flew out of my hand and landed under the car next to ours・ My husband was laughing very hard. We drove, finally, away.Over the years, he and I had often wondered what the people of that church thought the next morning when they found $49.95, small-sized girdle in their parking lot.6.When she was telling the story, she _____ .A.was happy for her husband^ deathB.was happy to share her funny memoriesC.was wondering who has picked up the girdleD.still couldn't forget the trouble on that day7.Which statement is true according to the story?A.She changed the girdle for a larger size・B.They tried hard to pour lots of potatoes into a small bag・C・ She put on the dress without the girdle in the end・D. She managed to put on the girdle with her husbands help・8.The writer's purpose in writing this story is ____ ・A.to share an interesting experieneeB.to prove her husband^ loveC・ lo describe her tight girdleD・ to describe her unspeakable feelingcDuring the twentieth century there has been a great change in the lives of women. A womanmarrying at the end of the nineteenth century probably would have been in her mid twenties, and would be likely to have seven or eight children, of whom four or five lived till they were five years old. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, during which chance and health made it unusual for her to find paid work・Today, many women marry younger and have fewer children. Usually a woman^s youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five. She is expected to live another thirty-five years and is likely to take paid work until sixty. This is an important change in women's economic position. Even a few years ago, most girls left school and took a full-time job. However, when they married, they usually left work at once and never returned to it. Today the school leaving age is sixteen; many girls stay at school after that age, and though women may marry younger, more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born・ Very many more afterwards return to full or part-time work・ Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage relationships, with the husband accepting a greater share of the duties and satisfactions of family life.9.One reason why a woman of today may take a job is that she ____ ・A. is younger when her children are old eno ugh to look after themselvesB・ does not like children herselfC.needn't worry about food for her childrenD.can be free from family duties when she reaches sixty10.Many girls are now likely to ____ .A. give up their jobs for good after they are mannedB・ leave school as soon as they canC.marry so that they can get a jobD.continue working until they are going to have a babyDTo face the musicLike every language, American English is full of special expressions, phrases that come from the day-to-day life of the people and develop in their own way. Our expression today is "to face the music二When someone says, "Well, I guess Fll have to face the music." it does not mean he's planning to go to the concert・ It is something far less pleasant, like being called in by your boss to explain why you did this and did that, and why you didn't do this or that. Sour music indeed, but it has to be faced・ At sometime or another every one of us has had to face the music, especially as children. We can all remember fathers angry voice, “ I want to talk to you,” and only because we did not obey him. What an unpleasant business it was!The phrase “to face the music" is fainiliar to every American, young or old. It is at leas t 100 years old. And where did this expression come from? The first explanation comes from the American novelist, James Fenimore Cooper. He said, in 1851, that the expression was first used by actors while waiting in the wings to go on the stage・ When they got their cue to go on, they often said, "Well, it's time to face the music: And that is exactly what they did——facing the orchestra which was just below them. And an actor might be frightened or nervous as he moved on to the stage in front of an audience that might be friendly or perhaps hostile, especially if he forgot his lines・ But hehad to go out. If he did not, there would be no play. So he expression "to face the music,' came to mean “ having to go through something, no matter how unpleasant the experience might be, because you knew you had no choice.Other explanations about the expression go back to the army・ When the men faced inspection by their leader, the soldiers would be worried about how well they looked・ Was their equipment clean, shinny enough to pass inspection? Still the men had to go on and face the music of the band as well as the inspection. What else could they do?Another army explanation is more closely related to the idea of facing the results and accepting the responsibility for something that should not have been done・ As, for example, when a man is forced out of the army because he did something terrible, he is dishonored. The band does not play. Only the drums tap a sad, slow beat. The soldier is forced to leave, facing such music as it is and facing the back of his horse.11.According to the passage, how many ways does the phrase "to face the music" come from?A. 1B. 2C. 3D.412・ What?s the meaning of "to face the music”?A.To face something far less pleasant.B.To face the stage.C・ To face the back of one's horse.D.
