Choose the correct title for each paragraph from the box below. For each paragraph (2-4) mark one letter (A-D) on your Answer Sheet. Do not mark any letter twice. The New LookWhen Sir John Quinton, then chairman of Barclays Bank, was given his marching orders last April, Britain's biggest bank thought it had found the scapegoat (替罪羊) for its sudden fall from grace and profits. Andrew Buxton, the bank's managing director and an offspring of its founding families, was a pointed chairman and chief executive, with effect from January 1st of next year. It seemed a glorious victory for good business management. Is the problem solve do certainly not.No sooner had Mr. Buxton been appointed chairman and chief executive than big shareholders and quite a few board members began quietly to question his ability to do both jobs at once. Now, weeks before he is due to move up, the questions are louder. Many wish the bank had seized the opportunity last April to separate the two top posts. And privately, some wonder whether Mr. Buxton is the right man for either one. What started as a thoroughly British Whispering Campaign has assumed much bigger dimensions.1. Mr. Buxton has suffered it all, but in truth he has no way out. After weeks of talking to shareholders and discussing with his non-executive directors, he has accepted that Barclays will separate the top jobs sometimes in the future. How? He says that there has been no formal discussion of it in the boardroom.2. Formally or informally, it has been agreed that Mr. Buxton will not be moved from his chairmanship, and that Barclays must find a strong chief executive. Opinions differ as to whether this person should be chosen from inside or outside the bank. Several board members believe that there is no ideal candidate inside Barclays.3. Neither shareholders nor non-executive directors want to wait long. If the right candidate can be found, the bank could combine the announcement of a new appointment with its annual results at the end of March. Mr. Buxton stressed the importance of getting this next step right, particularly since any appointment will mean overturning a management reorganization that was announced only eight months ago.18. Paragraph 1_____________19. Paragraph 2______________20. Paragraph 3______________A. Anxieties about choosing the right candidatesB. Proposals for candidates of the chief executiveC. Lack of ideal candidate inside BarclaysD. Buxton's agreement to give up one of his two top jobs Questions 21-25The expression benchmarking has become one of the fashionable words in current management discussion. The term first appeared in the United States in the 1970s but has now gained world wide recognition. But what exactly does it mean and should yourcompany be practicing it?One straightforward definition of benchmarking comes from Chris Tether managing director of a New Zealand-based consultancy firm specializing in this area. “Benchmarking involves learning about your own practices, learning about the best practices of others, and then making changes for improvement that will enable you to meet or beat the best in the world.” The essential element is not simply imitating what other companies do but being able to adapt the best of other firms’ practices to your own situation.Instead of aiming to improve only against previous performance and scores, companies can use benchmarking to inject an element of imagination and common sense into their search for progress. It is a process which forces companies to look closely at those activities which they may have been taking for granted and comparing them with the actives of other world-beating companies. Self-criticism is at the heart of the process although in some cases this may upset managers who are reluctant to question long established practices. The process of identifying best practice in other companiesdoes not just mean looking closely at your competitors. It might also include studying companies which use similar processes to your own, even though they are producing different goods. The point is to look at the process rather than the product. For example, Italian computer company Arita wanted to improve the quality of its technical manuals and handbooks. Instead of looking at manuals produced by other computer companies, Arita turned to a publisher of popular handbooks such as cookery books, railway timetables and car repair manuals. As Arita’s Technical Director Claudio Benclii says, “All of these handbooks are communicating complex information in a simple way - exactly what we are aiming to do. And in many cases they succeed far better than any computer company.”There is some disagreement between benchmarking specialists as to the best methods to follow when starting a benchmarking exercise in your firm. Everyone agrees that the process must have the full approval of senior management but that it is best carried out by a comparatively small team. Some consultants feel this should be as small as three people but most favor a team of between five and eight at least one of whomshould have some prior knowledge of the benchmarking process. In practice this often means bringing in an outside consultant at least at the beginning. Once the team is assembled there can be anything from three to five formal stages in the process different approaches but whatever the exact technique benchmarking can only work if everyone in the company from top to bottom is committed to change.21. According to the writer, benchmarking must always involve_____________.A. changing your activities on the basis of new informationB. copying exactly what your competitors doC. identifying the best company in your marketD. collaborating with other companies in the same field22. Some managers may resist benchmarking because____________.A. it takes their activities for grantedB. it makes them examine the way they workC. it makes others question their efficiencyD. it gives them a lot of extra work23. Anita found that a publishing company could__________.A. make more money than a computer firmB. producetechnical manuals for themC. show them how to improve their own manualsD. help them move into new markets24. Benchmarking specialists agree that in order to succeed there must be___________.A. a team of no more than three peopleB. total support from top managersC. a fixed timetable for the processD. an outside consultant it the team25. What is the writer’s purpose in writing this article?A. to recommend the process of benchmarkingB. to criticize firms that do not carry out benchmarkingC. to give tactual information about benchmarkingD. to explain why benchmarking does not suit every firm Questions 26–30The Negotiating TableYou can negotiate virtually anything. Projects, resources, expectations and deadlines are all outcomes of negotiation. Some people negotiate deals for a living. Dr. Herb Cohen is one of these professional talkers, called in by companies tonegotiate on their behalf. He approaches the art of negotiation as a game because, as he is usually negotiating for somebody else, he says this helps him drain the emotional content from his conversation. He is working in a competitive field and needs to avoid being too adversarial (对抗的). Whether he succeeds or not, it is important to him to make a good impression so that people will recommend him.The starting point for any deal, he believes, is to identify exactly what you want from each other. More often than not, one party will be trying to persuade the other round to their point of view. Negotiation requires two people at the end saying “yes”. This can be a problem because one of them usually begins by saying “no”. However, although this can make talks more difficult, this is often just a starting point in the negotiation game. Top management may well reject the idea initially because it is the safer option but they would not be there if they were not interested. It is a misconception that skilled negotiators are smooth operators in smart suits. Dr. Cohen says that one of his strategies is to dress down so that the other side can relateto you. Pitch your look to suit your customer. You do not need to make them feel better than you but, for example, dressing in a style that is not overtly expensive or successful will make you more approachable. People will generally feel more comfortable with somebody who appears to be like them rather than superior to them. They may not like you but they will feel they can trust you.Dr. Cohen suggests that the best way to sell your proposal is by getting into the world of the other side. Ask questions rather than give answers and take an interest in what the other person is saying, even if you think what they are saying is silly. You do not need to become their best friends but being too clever will alienate them. A lot of deals are made on impressions. Do not rush what you are saying---put a few hesitations in; do not try to blind them with your verbal dexterity. Also, you should repeat back to them what they have said to show you take them seriously.Inevitably some deals will not succeed. Generally the longer the negotiations go on, the better chance they have because people do not want to think their investment andenergies have gone to waste. However, joint venture can mean joint risk and sometimes, if this becomes too great, neither party may be prepared to see the deal through. More common is a corporate culture clash between companies, which can put paid to any deal. Even having agreed a deal, things may not be tied up quickly because when the lawyers get involved, everything gets slowed down as they argue about small details.Dr. Cohen thinks that children are the masters of negotiation. Their goals are totally selfish. They understand the decision-making process within families perfectly. If Mum refuses their request, they will troop along to Dad and pressure him. If all else fails, they will try the grandparents, using some emotional blackmail. They can also be very single-minded and have an inexhaustible supply of energy for the cause they are pursuing. So there are lessons to be learned from watching and listening to children.26. You should decide on thebest choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Shee t witha single line through the center.Passage OneQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:Why are British people so interested in spending money on their homes? One reason is economic. Buying a house is usually the most expensive single purchase that any person will ever make. The average price of a home in Britain was 100,000 pounds in 2001.Very few people can afford to buy a house outright, for cash, and so they have to take out a loan, called a mortgage, from a bank to pay for the house. This loan then needs to be paid back over a long period of time, often twenty-five years. Given such a large and long investment, it makes sense for people to spend time renovating and extending their property in order to make it worth more money if they sell the house; or to give themselves more space if they continue to live in it.Furthermore, house prices have risen spectacularly over the last years as more people choose to buy, rather than rent, their homes. Property prices increased by more than 33% in the 1990s alone. Another British saying , “Safe as houses”reveals their attitude towards investing in property. Can this trend towards owning your own property continue? British has a long-established base of houses and not much new space to build new ones. But fortunately Britain’s population is not growing very fast and so the number of new houses and flats built every year, about 200,000 in the year 2001, is not quite enough to cater for demand. Consequently, as demand outstrips supply, prices rise. But another, perhaps more compelling, reason for the urge to spend money on the house, is psychological. Dr. John Russell of Bournemouth University says, “The home is of great emotional and cultural significance for people. People try to express themselves in front of others through their houses.”So houses are no longer just about bricks and mortar. Homes are about safety and security, warmth and comfort. They are an outward sign of one’s identity, of one’s status and achievements. “Ultimately,” says Dr. Russell, “homes are abouta sense of belonging.”11. What is the main idea of this passage?A) Buying a house is usually the most expensive single purchase in BritainB) To analyze the reasons why house prices have risen spectacularly over thelast few years.C) To predict whether or not house prices will continue to rise.D) To analyze the reasons why British people are interested in spending moneyon their home.12. What is the meaning of the word “outright”(in para. 2) ?A) completely and totallyB) directlyC) partlyD) decisively13. Why do British people spend time to renovate and extend their property?A) Because house buying is a large and long investment.B) In order to make the house worth more money if they sell it.C) In order to give themselves more space if they continue to live in it.D) Both A, B and C14. What can you infer from “Safe as houses” (in para. 4)?A) Houses are usually cheap in Britain.B) It’s safer to live in a house than outdoors.C) It is safe to invest in property.D) House prices will keep steady in the next year.15. Why are British people so interested in spending money on their homes?A) Because of economic reasonB) Because of psychological reasonC) Both A and BD) Houses are an outward sign of one’s identity, status and achievements.Passage TwoQuestions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage:Nowadays, it is important to understand correct gift-giving behaviour around the world. So what is an appropriate and thoughtful gift? Rogers, an American businessman based in Chicago, says that anything that from your home country that is difficult to get elsewhere would be good. For example, a fancy packet of Hawaiian pineapples would be appreciated. Once you have got to know someone try to give them a present to suit their personal interests as well. If your business partner enjoys football, for example, why not get them a shirt of his favorite team? But remember gifts of clothing from a man to a woman may seem too intimate and might suggest an inappropriate relationship. When to give the gift also depends on your culture. Westerners usually give gifts when they meet each other but in Eastern cultures it is more usual to give gifts when you leave. There may also be special holiday times when gift-giving is expected. Christmas is a time for gift-giving in Christian countries and Muslim people exchange cards during the festival at the end of Ramadan, the Holy Month. All gifts should be wrapped. In some cultures the wrapping paper has special meanings. For example, the Chinese feel red is lucky. Especially at New Year the Chinese like to give money in red envelopes called “Hong Bao”, and presents with a red pattern are usual. White paper wrapping should be avoided as the color white is associated with funerals in China.Westerners usually open gifts immediately and thank the giver but in Asia it is more usual to open the gift later in private. This is to protect the gift-giver from any embarrassment if the gift is discovered to be inappropriate in any way. Additionally in Asia, it is considered polite to refuse the gift at the beginning and for the gift-giver to have to insist that the other person accepts.Gift-giving customs vary from country to country so it is difficult to be correct in every situation. But if you learn the general rules and do a bit of research on the customs of the places you will visit you will not go too far wrong.16. What sorts of gifts would be appropriate, according to Rogers?A) Things that from your own place that are difficult to get locally in theplace where you are visitingB) Things that are difficult to get in your own countryC) Things that suit your own personal interestsD) Anything17. The word “intimate” (Para 3) most probably means “______”.A) personal B) secret C) close D) private18. Asian people tend to open gifts in private because _________.A) Because they consider impolite to open gifts in publicB) Because they don't want to appear greedyC) Because they don’t want the donor to lose face if the gift is notappropriateD) Because they feel embarrassed to open gifts immediately19. Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE according to the passage?A) When giving gifts, we should remember the country’s religion.B) We should avoid giving things that are not appropriate.C) We should choose the unwrapping paper carefully.D) In Europe, people usually refuse the gift many times before they takeit.20. The best title for this passage would be _______.A) What is an Appropriate Gift B) The Art of Gift-givingC) The Importance of Gift-giving D) How to Avoid Mistakes in Gift-givingPassage ThreeQuestions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage:Ever since I was very small, I’ve had the sense that I ought to be somewhat else. I remember watching trains flash by and wishing I was on board. I remember going to the airport with my parents when I was 13 and reading the destinations board, seeing all the places that I could go to: Los Angeles, Chicago, London. But the trains passed by and the planes took off without me, so I wandered the world through books. I went to Victorian England in the pages of Middlemarch and A Little Princess, and to St. Petersburge before the fall of the tsar with Anna Karenina. My home was in a pleasant place outside Philadelphia. But I really lived, truly lived, somewhere else. I lived within the covers of books. In books I traveled, not only to other worlds, but into my own. I learned who I was and who I wanted to be, what I might achieve, and what I might dare to dream about my world and myself.I travel today in the way I once dreamed of traveling as a child --- on airplanes and in trains. And the irony is that I don’t care for it very much. I am the sort of person who prefers to stay at home, surrounded by family, friends, books. The only thing I do like about traveling is the time on airplanes spent reading. It turns out that when my younger self thought of taking wing, she wanted only to let her spirit soar. Books are the plane, and the train, and the road. They are the real destinations, and the journey too. They are home.21. What did the author learn from books as a child?A) About many foreign places.B) About many historical figures.C) About the outside world as well as her own self.D) About the ironies of life.24. Konrad Lorenz, studying the behavior of geese, describes a typical example. Ado’s mate, Susanne-Elisabeth, was killed by a fox. He stood silently by her partly eaten body, which lay across their nest. In the following days, he hung his head and his eyes became vacant. Because he did not have the heart to defend himself from the attacks of the other geese, his status in the flock fell sharply. A year went by. Finally Ado pulled himself together and found another mate.Animals may fall in love dramatically. According to Lorenz two geese are most likely to “fall in love” when they have known each other as youngsters, been separated and then meet again. He compared this to a man who meets a woman and --- astonished that she is the same girl he used to see running around in a school uniform --- falls in love and marries her. According to parrot specialist Sue Athan, it is common for some parrots to fall in love at first sight.Instinct may urge animals to love, but it does not say whom they will love. Seeking a mate for a male parrot, Athan purchased a fine-feathered young female and introduced the two birds. To Aathan’s disappointment, “the male nevertheless acted like the female wasn’t even in the room.”A few months later Athan was given an older female in extremely poor condition. “She didn’t have a feature from the neck down,” she says. “Her feet were all twisted. She had lines around her eyes. And yet the male thought she was the love of his life.” The two birds immediately paired off and eventually produced young.26. For each paragraph (l-4) mark one letter (A-G) on your Answer Sheet. Do not mark any letter twice. The Koreans see the Seoul Olympics as a chance to show their rapid progress. The Tokyo Olympic Games in 1964 served the same purpose for a developing Japan. Within 13 years, according to a detailed development plan, Korea is determined to be among the world's ten largest trading nations, up from the 13th now.1. Much of the economy's development in recent years comes from what Korean leaders call the three blessings-lower oil prices, lower world wide interest rates, and a currency that is weak against the Japanese yen. The Korean won is closely related with many other currencies, though the finance ministry will not say which ones. Obviously the U. S. dollar is the most important. When its value drops against the Japanese yen, the Korean won went down too. Since September 1985 the won has decreased about 40% against the yen, giving Koreaa huge advantage over Japan in the U.S. market.2. The Koreans made good use of this advantage, pouring 40% of their exports into America. When the U.S. responded with tough protectionism talk, they pretended to be surprised and angry. The Koreans still see themselves as relatively poor dependents of the U.S. and take American protectionism as betrayal by a big brother. They are right. The Korean economy is only 6% of Japan's. Tall buildings in Seoul resemble those in Tokyo, but the Korean capital is full of narrow streets and poor houses like a village. In the countryside some 20% of home lack running water. Moreover, Korea has a heavy defense burden as well as that big foreign debt.3. And Korea has suffered set tacks before In the 1970s the government supported heavy industry, creating some big but useless enterprises. The Treasury Ministry is still quietly supporting some ill shipping and overseas companies. Meanwhile the government does not know how to set up wining industries.4. The Koreans are also quick to point out that their 7.1 billion trade surplus with the U.S. is just 4% of the total American trade deficit. Japan account for 35%. In the U. S. the Koreans are competing with Japanese, not American Products. They complain that U. S. protectionism punishes them for Americans' lazy work habits and drug abuse. They say the union rules have ruined U. S. competitiveness. Questions 8-118. Paragraph 1 . . . . . . .9. Paragraph 2 . . . . . . .10. Paragraph 3 . . . . . . .11. Paragraph 4 . . . . . . .A. Do you like yellow, orange, red? If you do you must be an optimist , a leader, an active person who enjoys lift, people and excitement. Do you prefer grays and blues? Then you are probably quiet, shy and you would rather follow-than lead. If you love green, you are strong-minded and determined. Y ou wish to succeed and want other people to see you are successful. At least this is what psychologists tell us, and they should know, because they have been seriously studying the meaning of color preference, and the effect that color have on human beings. They tell us that we don’t choose ourfavourite color as we grow up .If you happen to love brown, you did so as soon as you opened your eyes, or at least as soon as you could see clealy.A yellow room makes us feel more cheerful and more comfortable than a dark green one, and a red dress brings warmth and cheer to the saddest winter ady. On the other hand, black is depressing. Light and bright colors make people not only happier but more active. The price of a house depends on its size and location.Big houses are more expensive than smaller ones. And houses closer to the center of big cities are more expensive than ones in the suburbs or in small towns.Regardless of the cost, it’s usual for people to buy their houses over a period of time. When a family buys a house, it is necessary to borrow money from a bank to pay for it .Then they repay the bank in regular payments. This kind of bank loan is called a mortgage. Families can take 30 years to pay offthe mortgage. Without a mortgage, it would be impossible for most people to own their houses. Many Americans don’t own their own homes They pay landlords to live in their homes. The money they pay for this is called rent .Ususlly it is cheaper to rent than it is to buy and to pay a mortgage. Also when something needs to be repaired, it is easy for the renter to ask the landlord to fix it.Some people rent houses, but most renters live in apartments. Apartment buildings are located in cities where it is too costly to build houses. Recently, it has become common for renters to buy their apartments. Because the plantation owners were always watching us, I had to be on time every day and work as hard as I could. I’ve never been late for any job since. I also learned about being respectful and faithful to people I work for . More importantly, I earned my pay; it never entered my mind to say I was sick just because I didn’t want to work.I was only six years old,but I was doing a man’s job.Our family needed every dollar we could make because my father never earned more than $18 a week. Our home was a three-room wood shack with a dirty floor and no toilet. Nothing made me prouder than bringing home money to help my mother ,father, two brothers and three sisters. This gave me self-esteem(自尊心),one of the most important things a person can have. When I was seven , I got work at a golf course near our house. My job was to stand down the faivway and spot the balls as they landed,so the golfers could find them. Losing a ball meant you were fired, so I never missed one. Some nights I would lie in bed and dream of making thousands of dollars by playing golf and being able to buy a bicycle. The more I dreamed, the more I thought. Why not? I made my first golf club out of guava limb (番石榴树枝) and a piece of pipe. Then I hammered and empty thin can into the shape of a ball. And finally I dug two small holes in the ground and hit the back and forth. I practiced with the same devotion and intensity.
