A few weeks ago, I went into Chase’s class for help. I e-mailed Chase’s teacher one evening and said, “My son keeps telling me that the thing you are sending home is math--but I’m not sure I

Besides the sun，the moon is the object in the sky we probably notice most often．On some nights it is a bright full circle．On other nights it is only a sliver(长薄片)．Why does the moon change its shape? It doesn’t change at all，in fact．It only seems to change. The moon is always a sphere，like a ball．What changes is how much that sphere we can see． How can a sphere appear to have different shapes? dark．You turn on the flashlight in your hand and shine it on the ball．To you，the ball looks like a bright full circle as the light shines on it．But someone a few feet to your right sees only half of that lit circle. The person across from you can’t see the ball at all．Everyone sitting in the circle sees a different part of the ball．It looks different to each person．But the ball is still a sphere．
It’s the same thing as the moon．The sun shines on the moon．But as the moon travels around the earth，we see different parts of its lit surface。When all the lit surface faces the earth．we see a full moon．Each day we see less and less of the lit surface．After about two weeks, all of the lit surface is facing away from the earth．Then we can’t see the moon at all．It’s a new moon．Over the next two weeks or so，we can see more and more of the moon until it’s full again．
