人生百味类阅读理解(3)2016高考英语阅读理解--人生百味类You feel happiest when you create a healthy balance between giving and receiving. If you give and give without making time to fill your own needs, then it’s likely you will burn out, or feel upset. When you take and take without giving anything back, you never feel a sense of achievement,so you are always searching for ways to fill the void in your life. The way to create a healthy balance between giving and receiving so as to achieve real happiness is to know and then live by your values. I break values up into two groups which I call “being” and “having” values. Your “being” values are the character traits(特征)of the ideal person you would like to be. An example of some “being” values are: kind, loving, generous, inspirational, peaceful, wise and even powerful. By acting on these values, you give to others through your actions and you inspire others by “being” a positive role model. Mastering “being” these character traits becomes your life purpose.Your “having” va lues are the feelings you need to create in order to be happy. These could be companionship, achievement, support,“being” valued or financial security. This is what you receive. You take responsibility for filling your own needs by taking steps to create these feelings and conditions in your life. When you make a commitment to live by your “being” values, it becomes easier to make conscious choices rather than reactionary(保守的) ones. If your usual habit is to complain about your problems, you could choose to think and act like a calm person. A calm person might go for a walk, meditate(沉思), or set a time limit before responding. If your usual pattern is to worry, you could choose to act like a responsible or wise person. In other words, you would act like the person you choose to be—this is the key to personal power. When you choose to act on your values, you not only feel good about yourself, but you reinforce(增强)your chosen beliefs. Over time acting in this way changes how you see the world, and in turn the way other people think of you.【小题1】The underlined word “void” in Paragraph 1 probably means. A.a feeling of emptinessB.a loss of powerC.a lack of energyD.a state of being confused【小题2】According to the text,by acting on your own “being” va lues, you will .A.gain a lot of powerB.fill your own needsC.seek all human virtuesD.form positive personality【小题3】Which of the following does NOT belong to your “having” values?A.Your success in the competition.B.The support from your friends.C.Your own peaceful mind.D.The friendship with others.【小题4】What can be inferred from the text?A.“Having” values are better than “being” values.B.The way other people think of you decides who you are.C.A calm person does not choose to complain easily.D.A responsible person does not care about financial security.【小题5】The main purpose of this passage is to .A.persuade the readers to make a commitmentB.inform the readers how to be truly happyC.explain to the readers what personal values areD.instruct the readers how to make wise choices2016高考英语阅读理解--人生百味类Thirteen can be a challenging age. Not only did I have to adapt to my changing body, I also had to deal with my parents’ bitter divorce, a new family and the upsetting move from my country home to a crowded town. When we moved, my beloved companion, a small brown pony had to be sold. I was heartbroken and terribly lonely. I couldn’t eat or sleep and cried all the time. Finally, realizing how much I missed my pony, my father bought me another horse, Cowboy.Cowboy was without doubt the ugliest horse in the world. But I didn’t care. I loved him beyond all reasons.I joined a riding club. When Cowboy and I entered the events where the horse was judged by appearance, we were quickl y ”shown the gate”. I knew nothing could turn Cowboy into a beauty. My only chance to compete would be in the timed speed events.I chose the jumping race. For the whole next month we practiced running and jumping for hours in the hot sun and then I would walk Cowboy home, totally exhausted. All of our hard work didn’t make me feel confident by the time the show came. One girl named Becky rode a big brown horse in the race events. She always won the blue ribbons. I sat at the gate and sweated all out while I watched Becky and her horse charge through the court and finish in first place. My turn finally came. At the signal, we dashed toward the first fence, jumped over it without trouble and raced on to the next one. Cowboy then flew over the second, third and fourth fences like a bird and I turned him toward the finish line.No cheers filled the air. The end of our run was met with surprised silence. Cowboyand I had beaten Becky and her fancy horse by two seconds.I gained much more than a blue ribbon that day. We spend all year looking forward to nice weather and long, hot days. All of winter, with its cloudy days and bitter cold, we dream of those endless days at the beach, lying on the sand and enjoying the bright and burning sun. Andthen, summer comes, and it rains. As a child, I would wake up to rainy summer days and come close to crying. It was n’t fair. We suffered through months of school and experienced bad weather for those short ten weeks of freedom and pleasant weather. On those rainy summer days, I had nothing fun to do and could only sit inside, staring out at the rain like a bird in a cage. I was an only child, so there was no one else to play with. My father worked from home, so I was not truly alone, but he could not actively play with me since he was at work. It was those days that I would watch whatever was on television or read a ny books that I could find lying around. I’d drag through the day and pray each night that the rain would not be there the next day.As an adult, though, my opinion of summer rain has changed. When you have to work every day, summer is not as exciting. Everything seems dull. Such a mindset makes you cheer for anything new or different. I spend the winter dreaming of summer and the summer dreaming of winter. When summer comes, I hate how hot it is. And then I look forward to the rain, because the rain brings with it a cold front, which makes me comfortable. Rainy days are still the worst days of the summer, but summer rain today means positively beautiful — and considerably cooler — weather tomorrow. 【小题1】When the author was a child, he ______.A.hated rainy daysB.liked staying indoorsC.preferred cooler weatherD.dreamed on summer days【小题2】We can learn from the passage that the author ______. That is why some friendships don't last very long. To have a friend, you must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous (宽宏大量的); be understanding.Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If you do not tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you haven't been honest, you may lose your friend's trust. Good friends always rely on one another to speak and act honestly.Generosity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You do not have to give your lunch money or your clothes. Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings. These can be very valuable to a friend. They tell your friend what is important to you. By sharing them, you help your friend know better.Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and help with a problem. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem. So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend's place so that you can understand the problem better. No two friendships are exactly alike (相同的). But all true friendships have three things in common. That's the question that changed my life forever. At the age of 19, I became a massage therapist(治疗师). For the first time in my life, I felt free, independent and completely in control of my life. That is, until my life took a detour. I was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis. Over the course of two months, I lost my spleen(脾), my kidneys, and both of my legs below the knees. One day, I went home. I crawled into bed and this is what my life looked like for the next few months me passed out, escaping from reality, with my legs resting by my side. I was completely physically and emotionally broken. But I knew that in order to move forward, I had to let go of the old Amy and learn to embrace the new Amy. And that is when I began to realize that I didn't have to be small any more. I could be as tall as I wanted or as short as I wanted depending on whom I was dating. And if I snowboard again, my feet aren't going to get cold. And the best of all, I thought, I can make my feet the size of all the shoes that are on the sales shelf. And I did!I started snowboarding. Then I went back to work. And then I co-founded a non-profit organization for physical disabilities so that they could get involved in action sports. And just this past February, I won two World Cup gold medals, making me the highest-ranked adaptive female snowboarder in the world.Eleven years ago, when I lost my legs, I had no idea what to expect. But if you ask me today, if I would ever want to change my situation, I would have to say no, because my legs haven't disabled me. They've forced me to rely on my imagination and to believe in possibilities, and that's why I believe that our imaginations can be used as tools for breaking through borders, because in our minds, we can do anything and we can be anything. It's belief in those dreams and facing our fears directly that allow us to live our lives beyond our limits.(1)What can we learn from the underlined sentence in Paragraph3?A. The author no longer wanted to make friends with Amy.B. The author realized she had to learn to accept a new "herself" gladly.C. The author wanted a new friend in her new life eagerly.D. The author is still very sensitive to her disabilities.C. The author has learnt to see her disabilities as blessings.D. The author hopes to return to her old life.(3)What message does the author want to convey with her speech?A. Roman is not built in one day.B. Failure is the mother of successC. Imagination is more important than knowledge.D. It is not what happens to you but how you respond that counts.(4)The tone of the passage is best described as ________.A. proud but stubbornB. interesting but regretfulC. optimistic and inspiringD. pessimistic and doubtful【答案】(1)B(2)C(3)D(4)C【解析】【分析】本文是一篇夹叙夹议文,作者Amy用她的故事告诉了我们:只要我们拥抱挑战,敢于想象,心怀感恩,我们依然可以给烂透了的生活——绝地反击。
天津市北辰区2016高考英语二轮复习人生百味类阅读理解(1)

人生百味类阅读理解(1)2016高考英语阅读理解--人生百味类Why can’t some people even get an inch of what they dream of being? Blame it on pure dreaming and lack of surrounding goals for achieving their dreams.Setting goals is very significant part of accomplishing and positive actions. It is like scaling(攀爬) a 200 feet construction and marking in the early hours on what feet you would like to reach at this specific period.People who set goals literally generate a map of their goal settings in life, marking where they should start, where to pause, where to study a bit, and where and when to end. Once this map comes into being, it allows the map drawer to check where he is in the scheme(安排) of things and whether or not he is making some planning that will take him closer to his goals.By surrounding goals, people will know how they are doing and what they should be doing to get their goals or dreams in life. They will know if they can relax or if they have to double their efforts when they are falling short of what is expected of them.Goal surroundings means a person is proactive in dealing with challenges that may affect his plans. Being proactive means one is able to outline possible difficulties that may occur as well as the solutions to these difficulties. By doing this, a person is not easily scared or defeated when challenges occur because he has already prepared for them. He knows they can happen and he has prepared a solution or strategy when that time comes.Setting goals will enable people to track their progress in whatever hard work they set out to do. It will help people bee more confident in themselves and more motivated to get their plans.【小题1】The purpose of this passage is to _______________.A.explain the difference between the two goals.B.show the importance of surrounding goals.C.tell us how to set and achieve one’s goals.D.tell us setting goals makes one confident.【小题2】The underlined word “proactive” in paragraph 5 may have the closest meaning to “________”.A.positive B.carefulC.brave D.prepared【小题3】According to the author, one had better ___________ in making a goal in life.A.take an active attitudeB.create a scheme as a wholeC.consider the possible troublesD.check where he is frequently【小题4】From the passage, we can reach the conclusion that___________________.A.achievements come to those who are well preparedB.everyone faces the situation which is scaring or threateningC.the higher one sets his goal, the more achievements he will haveD.success never es to people who always blame2016高考英语阅读理解--人生百味类To Friend or Not To FriendWe all love our parents and turn to them when we’re in need, but would you like them to hear the conversations you have with your friends on the school playground or lunch queue? Social networking sites have become extensions of the school hallways, so would you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends? In the past the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with latest technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day to day lives as they always had because they had no need to know more about technology. However, more and more parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives. This realization has given many parents the motivation to education themselves about social networking sites. These days many people are attracted to social networking sites because they can choose who they have a round them; there’s also a certain amount of control over privacy that we don’t get in real life. Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated when we must accept a “friend” request from a parent or family member. It’s a difficult choice whether or not to allow a parent to become a part of our online lives. On the one hand we don’t want to “reject” their request because that might hurt their feelings or make them feel you have something to hide. On the other hand if you do accept, then you could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way you did before.A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn’t take it personally if their child ignores their request, “When a teen ignores a parent’s friend request, i t doesn’t necessarily mean that they are hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of their life where they want to be independent.”Perhaps talking with parents and giving explanations would help soften the blow if you do choose not to add them to your friends list.【小题1】From Paragraph 2, we learn that _______.A.parents feel secure about their privacy onlineB.social networks successfully fill the generation gapC.parents have realized the importance of social networksD.social networks offer a platform for parents to communicate【小题2】Teenagers may refuse a parent’s friend request because _______.A.they hide something from their parentsB.they are unwilling to be watched by parentsC.their parents tend to fall behind in technologyD.their parents make negative comments on them【小题3】The passage is mainly about _______.A.privacy onlineB.social networksC.the generation gapD.parents’ friend requests【小题4】The passage is written mainly for _______.A.parents B.teenagersC.teachers D.researchers阅读下列短文, 从给的四个选项 (A、B、C和D) 中, 选出最佳选项。

Once again I found that I differed from my peers:While many of them wanted to stay close to home,I couldn’t wait to be out in the world on my own. While my mom may not have been happy at the thought of my going away, she was supportive and excited for me.One big thing I realized during my senior year,as my mom granted me more freedom, was that she actually believes in me and trusts me. That meansa lot. Most of my life, and especially when I was little, the main person I tried to impress in my schoolwork or other things was my mother. I knew she expected nothing but the best from me. Sometimes it was hard to live up to her standards;getting a single B on my report card would make me feel bad because I knew she wanted me to have all A’s.I know that her high standards have helped me stay focused on what’s important, like education, and made me who I am. I am thankful for her supportand involvement in my life .Most of all I respect her. She is the strongest woman I know and that’s why I have turned out so strong and independent.【小题1】When the author decided to go to Puerto Rico, his mother________.A.wanted to go with himB.worried about his safetyC.didn’t allow him to do soD.asked his grandmother for advice【小题2】The author decided to move away for college to________.A.be different from his peersB.keep away from his motherC.be independent in the outside worldD.make his mother unhappy【小题3】We can learn from the third paragraph that the author’smother________.A.had a high expectation of himB.was too strict with himC.used to expect nothing from himD.cared little about his learning【小题4】In the passage, the author mainly wants to tell us________.A.his long way to becoming independentB.his good relationship with his motherC.the importance of a mother’s trust and supportD.his mother’s deep love for him2、Have you e ver noticed that the more you have the more you want? Let’s face it.Thinking our life is good enough doesn’t come naturally to many people. When we have high expectations of everything in life we will run into disappointment.Only when we are aware that needs are different from desirescan we live with satisfaction. Here are a few ideas to help you be happier withwhat you have and who you are.Focus on what you are thankful for. Most people want things to be betterthan they are, or when things are going well, we forget to appreciate what wehave.Learn to reflect on how much better things are than they could be.Focuson what you are thankful for.Write down 5 things you are grateful for rightnow. When we hold onto regrets from decisions we have made, it can really poison our well-being.Many people regret something they can no longer change, which ends up holding them back from moving forward in a more positive manner. What happened in the past is done and gone, so work to stay present and be mindful of the current moment to find more joy and fulfillment. When we use other people as the measuring stick for our personal successand quality of life we are likely to be less satisfied.Social comparisons can provide useful information when we try to learn from others, but they also holdour perspective in a discontented position.Compare yourself less with othersso you can be satisfied more. When you are focused on your big ambitions and future goals you mightelide the daily pleasures that surround you.Learn to slow down and absorb the wonder and beauty around you.Stay present and focus on the task you’re undertaking at the moment.Don’t l et the life pass you by because you’re always on the go and distracted by ambition.Practice looking at life through the lens of contentment and it will becomemore natural.【小题1】How can we live with contentment?A.To change our lifestyle.B.To have a motivation in life.C.To give less attention to what we are grateful for.D.To realize the difference between needs and desires.【小题2】What’s the main idea of Paragraph 3?A.Make wise decisionsB.Know the present situationC.Let go of regretsD.Remember the past【小题3】The underlined word “elide”(in Paragraph 5) probably means.“______”A.enjoy B.change C.create D.neglect【小题4】What should you do to put yourself in a good mood?A.Make time for simple pleasures.B.Learn from successful people.C.Focus on your future goals.D.Create chance to learn more.3、A man may usually be known by the books he reads as well as by thecompany he keeps; for there is a companionship of books as well as of men;and one should always live in the best company, whether it be of books or ofmen.A good book may be among the best of friends. It is the same today that italways was, and it will never change. It is the most patient and cheerful of companions. It does not turn its back upon us in times of adversity or distress. It always receives us with the same kindness; amusing and instructing us inyouth, and comforting and consoling us in age.Men often discover their affinity (密切关系) to each other by the mutuallove they have for a book just as two persons sometimes discover a friend bythe admiration which both entertain for a third. There is an old proverb,“Love me, love my dog.” But there is more wisdom in this: “Love me, love my book.” The book is a truer and higher bond of union. Men can think, feel, andsympathize with each other through their favorite author. They live in himtogether, and he in them.A good book is often the best urn(瓮) of a life enshrining the best that lifecould think out; for the world ofa man’s life is, for the most part, but the world ofhis thoughts. Thus the best books are treasuries of good words, the goldenthoughts, which, if remembered and cherished, become our constant companions andcomforters.Books possess an essence of immortality. They are by far the most lasting products of human effort.Temples and statues decay, but books survive. Time is of no account with great thoughts, which are as fresh today as when they first passed through their author’s minds, ages ago. What was then said and thought still speaks to us as vividly as ever from the printed page. The only effects of time have beento filter out the bad products; for nothing in literature can long survive but whatis really good.【小题1】A good book may be among the best of friends because_____.A.it changes over the past of timeB.it contains all kinds of knowledgeC.it doesn’t betray us when we are in troubleD.it comforts us in youth and instructs us in age【小题2】“Love me, love my book” in paragraph 3 probably means _______?A.If you love me, you must reading books.B.The book can be a bond between friends.C.I love books as much I love friends.D.If you love the author, you will love his books.【小题3】Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A.Time can tell whether a literature is good or bad.B.All books are our constant companions and comforters.C.Temples, statues and books cannot stand the test of time.D.The w orld of a man’s thoughts is what his life is all about.【小题4】The best title for this passage can be.A.Reading BooksB.A Good BookC.Our Best FriendD.Companionship of Books4、I may not be the wisest person on this planet.but I will tell you a little secret to happiness:Help other,,and live life.It is that simple.Just help a friend study for a test,or volunteer at a nursing home .I learned this after a long, hard search.I was feeling really down because my long4ime friend had died. Then I started a six-week volunteering at a nursing home all day every Saturday. My routine was to serve the meal and clean up.After that,I would wait for the head nurse to tell me what to do.One day I was told to go to Room 117 to make sure the patient was all right. In the room I found a boy of eight sitting in his bed watching a movie.I was shocked to see a child in this seemingly forgotten nursing home for the old.He was so small and weak that you had to look closely to find him.He motioned for me to sit down.I grabbed his medical chart from which later I found out he had a terminal illness. We started to talk, and I found out that his family rarely visited, and all he did ever7 day was watch TV.I wanted to cry for him,and for my lost friend. As we talked,he had a smile on his face, and I asked him why."The entire two hours I've been here you've never lost that smile. With this horrible disease, how do you still manage to stay happy?"He thought for a moment, and then said that too many people are dead even before they die. They walk around feeling that God has cursed (诅咒) them and that they have nothing to live for.The boy said that he would not be like that.He wakes every morning thankful to see another sunrise. He keeps his window open so that he can smell the flowers and feel the heat of the sun.He also said that he has hope."Too many people haven't seen much of that around here," he said," Life is full of hope and we need to live life before it is gone."I don’t know what happened to him.I assume he passed away, but hislesson lives on.I now wake up and live each day to the fullest. The key to lifeis not money or fame, but the lessons we learn from it.【小题1】The nursing home in the passage is mainly for_______A.the elderly B.the homelessC.the disabled D.the abandoned【小题2】The boy stayed happy mainly due to_______.A.wonderful TV programsB.his positive attitudeC.good medical conditionD.others' encouragement【小题3】The writer participated in the volunteering job in order to_______.A.find out the secretB.search for helpC.enrich experiencesD.get out of sadness【小题4】What would be the best title for the passage?A.A Lesson in HopeB.The Life of a Sick BoyC.A Voluntary JobD.The Meaning of Life5、Why are so many people so afraid of failure? Quite simply because noone tells us how to fail so that failure becomes an experience that will lead togrowth. We forget that failure is part of the human condition and that every person has the right to fail. Most parents work hard at either preventing failure or protecting their children from the knowledge that they have failed. One way is to lower-made table as “Perfect!” even standards. A mother describes her child’s hastythough it doesn’t stand still. Another way is to shift blame. If John fails science, his teacher is unfair or stupid. The trouble with failure-prevention devices is that they leave a childunequipped for life in the real world. The young need to learn that no one canpossible tobe best at everything, no one can win all the time--- and that it’senjoy a game even when we don’t win. A child who’s not invited to a birthdayparty, who doesn’t make the honor roll on the baseball team, feels terrible, ofcourse. But parents should not offer a quick consolation, prize or say, “Itdoesn’t matter.” because it does. The young should be allowed to experience disappointment—and be helped to master it.Failure is never pleasurable. It hurts grown-ups and children alike. But itcan make a positive contribution to your life once you learn to use it. Step oneis to ask “Why did I fail?”Don’t blame someone else. Ask yourself what you did wrong, how you canimprove. If someone else can help, don’t be shy about inquiring. Success, which encourages repetition of old behavior, is not nearly as good a teacher asfailure. You can learn from a bad party how to give a good one, from anill-chosen first house what to look for in a second. Even a failure that seemsdefinitive can prompt fresh thinking, a change of direction. After 12 years ofstudying ballet, a friend of mine auditioned for a professional company. Shewas turned down. “ Would further training help?” she asked. The ballet master shook his head. “ You will never be a dancer”, he said, “You haven’t the body for it.”In such cases, the way to use failure is to take stock(估量) of the situationbravely asking, “What have I left? What else can I do?” My friend put away her shoes and moved into dance treatment center, a field where she’s both ableand useful. Failure frees one to take risks beca use there’s less to lose. Oftenthere is recovery of energy—a way to find new possibilities.【小题1】The second paragraph tells us ___________A.how a mother praised her childrenB.parents should blame their children at the proper time.C.how to shift blameD.two ways of failure prevention most parents use when their children fail【小题2】According to the author, what should a child know in the real world?A.No one can be best all the time at everything.B.He should be equipped for life.C.No parents should offer quick consolations.D.He can get pleasure from failure as well as success.【小题3】The underlined word “prompt” in the fifth paragraph can be best replaced by “_________.” A.prevent B.cause C.continue D.exchange【小题4】From the passage we know that ______________.A.success lies in hard workB.never be disappointed to lifeC.failure can affect one’s life greatly once he learns to use it.D.everyone had his own value6、(C)The Loss of InnocenceInnocence is such a precious gift. It’s explained as freedom fro m guilt or wrong doing.Just imagine never having to worry about anything and having a guilt free mind. Some people wish to save this kind of innocence from beinglost from childhood to adulthood. What would the world be like if innocence were never lost? One way it would benefit humanity is the lack of hatred (仇恨)among the world.During youth, there may be an occasional argument, even a little physical fight, but nothing like firing a handgun at a fellow human being. And children are blind towards the racial differences of others.A kid will hang out with any other kid.It is the lack of innocence and the ignorance we learn from adults that influence children otherwise.Another benefit is the constant desire for fun andadventure. With very little if any time at all for fun,the adventurous mind is lostin time with the responsibilities placed upon adults. If innocence were kept alive, these ambitions would never depart from our lives. However, other people actually hate the idea of innocence lasting forever. They feel that the lack of organization and mental power of those with innocence would cause extremely destructive consequences to society in general.A large number of individuals would never have the urge to learn, work, and act upon the necessary needs for humanity to survive.Without a proper education which is usually provided by those who no longer live in aworld of innocence, people would not have the desire to succeed, get a good job in life,or provide income for their families, which would hurt the lives of children. The lack of a good education and career would also harm the economy. As long as innocence is kept alive,no one would be terribly angeredat the lack of effort people put out in the workplace, resulting in a strong decline in production and quality of needed goods.Maybe it is wrong in wanting to save innocence. It sure is a nice thought, though.Perhaps innocence was meant to be lost.It was god’s will to make things the way they are,and there is a good purpose for everything. All that remains to be said about innocence is to enjoy it while it lasts.【小题1】The author believes that the loss of innocence in adulthood shouldbe _______.A.avoidedB.condemnedC.acceptedD.inspired【小题2】Lifelong innocence would be beneficial to society in that _______.A.proper education would be providedB.there would be no racial discriminationC.more happy families would be guaranteedD.people would realize their childhood dreams【小题3】According to the author, people with innocence can hurt the economy with their lack of _____.A.motivational willB.mental abilityC.adventurous ambitionsD.needed goods【小题4】Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?A.B.C.D.7、Honesty is the best policy, as the English saying goes. Unfortunately, honesty often leaves us when no one is watching, British psychologists reported last week.Researchers at UK’s Newcastle University set up an experiment in their psychology department’s coffee room. They set a kettle, with tea, coffee and milk on the counter and hung up asign listing the price for drinks. People helping themselves to a cup of tea weresupposed to put a few cents in the box nearby. The scientists hung a poster above the money box, and changed eachweek between pictures of gazing eyes and pictures of flowers. The researchers found that staff paid 2.76 times more for their drinks when theimage of the eyes was hung.“We were shocked by the size of the effect,” said Gilbert Roberts, one of the researchers.Eyes are known to be a powerful perceptual (知觉的) signal for humans, scientists say.“Even though the eyes were not real, they still seemed to make peoplesaid Melissa Bateson, a behavioral biologist and behave more honestly,” leader of the study.Researchers believe the effect throws light on our evolutionary past. Itmay arise from behavioral characteristics that developed when early humansformed social groups to strengthen their chances of survival. For social groupsanto work, individuals had to co-operate, rather than act selfishly. “There’sargument that if nobody is watching us, it is in our interests to behave selfishly. But when we’re being watched we should behave better. So people see us asco-operative and behave the sa me way towards us,” Bateson said. The new finding indicates that people have a striking response to eyes. That might be because eyes and faces send a strong biological signal we have evolved to respond to, Bateson said. The finding could be put to practical use. For example, images of eyes could ensure ticket sales on public transport and improve surveillance(监视) systems to deter anti-social behavior.【小题1】In the experiment, a poster was hung above the money box to ________.A.give a harmonious atmosphereB.remind people the drinks were not freeC.prove the actual effect of different picturesD.see how honest people are in different situations【小题2】From the result of the experiment, we can conclude that ________.A.people might pay more for the drinks at the image of gazing eyesB.people may be dishonest when no one is watching themC.no one would pay for the drink unless they are told toD.just a image of flowers is not enough to remind people to pay for a drink【小题3】What is the best title for the passage?A.You're being watched!B.Pay for your drink, please!C.Mind your behavior in public!D.Look out for electronic surveillance equipment!【小题4】Which of the following English proverbs can be best used at the beginning of the passage?A.Once a thief, always a thiefB.Lies have short legsC.Honest is the best policyD.An honest look covers many faults8、A new study of 8,000 young people in the Journal of Health and SocialBehavior shows that although love can make adults live healthily and happily,it is a bad thing for young people. Puppy love (早恋) may bring stress for youngpeople and can lead to depression. The study shows that girls become moredepressed than boys, and younger girls are the worst of all.The possible reason for the connection between love and higher risk ofdepression for girls is “loss of self”. According to the study, even though boysisthis “loss of self” would say “lose themselves in a romantic relationship”,much more likely to lead to depression when it happens to girls. Young girlswho have romantic relationships usually like hiding their feelings and opinions. They won’t tell that to their parents.Dr Marian Kaufman, an expert on young people problems, says 15% to20% young people will have depression during their growing. Trying romanceoften causes the depression. She advises kids not to jump into romance tooearly. During growing up, it is important for young people to build strong friendships and a strong sense of self. She also suggests the parents shouldencourage their kids to keep close to their friends, attend more interestingschool activities and spend enough time with family.Parents should watch for signs of depression -- eating or mood changes --and if they see signs from their daughters or sons, they need to give help. Thegood news is that the connection between romance and depression seems tobecome weak with age. Love will always make us feel young, but only maturity(成熟) gives us a chance to avoid its bad side effects.【小题1】Which of the following is more likely to have depression?A.Young people who have a strong sense of selfishness.B.Young girls who always hide their feelings and opinions.C.Young boys whose parents watch for their behavior.D.Careless parents whose children are deep in love.【小题2】What can be inferred from the passage?A.The older a woman is,the less likely she seems to lose herself in romance.B.Lacking love can lead young people to grow up more quickly.C.Early love makes young people keep close to their friends and parents.D.Parents should help their children to be aware of the signs of depression. 【小题3】What’s the author’s attitude towards puppy love?A.Confused B.DisinterestedC.Scared D.Disapproving【小题4】What’s the main idea of the passage?A.Puppy love may bring young people depression.B.Parents should forbid their children’s love.C.Romance is a two edged sword for adults.D.Romance is good for young people.9、In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity; others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth reliedon how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing welland winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten. However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others takean opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among themost vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe inthem a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieveI may have lost, but it success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: “What is not usually admitted by doesn’t matter because I really didn’t try.” themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is thesame as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one’s self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Onlyas this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve can we discover anew meaning in competition.【小题1】What does this passage mainly talk about?A.Competition helps to set up self-respect.B.Opinions about competition are different among people.C.Competition is harmful to personal quality development.D.Failures are necessary experiences in competition【小题2】Why do some people favor competition according to the passage?A.It pushes society forward.B.It builds up a sense of duty.C.It improves personal abilities.D.It encourages individual efforts.【小题3】What is the similar belief of the true competitors and those with a desire to fail ?A.One’s worth lies in his performance compared with others.B.One’s success in competition needs great efforts.C.One’s achievement is determined by his particular skills.D.One’s success is based on how hard he has tried.【小题4】Which point of view may the author agree to?A.Every effort should be paid back.B.Competition should be encouraged.C.Winning should be a life-and-death matter.D.Fear of failure should be removed in competition.10、What I like to advise people is to find out what it is that makes them happy. What do you love to do? If you truly love what you do just go ahead andtry to make a living by doing it. People will throw money at you to do it. But youwill always have to work hard at it. I have to draw every single day of my life. Ihave to draw about 20 ideas. My advice is to put aside a certain amount oftime every day and make you draw or whatever, especially when you don’t feel like it. Only in this way will you be able to perfect your talent. The first step you take is to go to your local library and ask for the publications issued in the current years. When you get these publications, tryto find the names of the top people concerned and their presidents. After youfind these, write down their names and addresses. Keep this list and update itevery year. Next thing you want to do is to create at least 40 cartoons. Get agrid(格子)from one of the strips in the newspapers, enlarge it to whateversize you wish and draw inside this grid. Now take the best 20 of your ideas andmake them into finished pieces. To do this, you would want to copy them in ink because if you were a professional cartoonist, that was what you should do.Now you can reduce the size of the finished cartoons to fit onto a regular comic’s page. By comparing yours with the others already in print, it gives youa good idea of clarity to your cartoon. The next step is to write letters to presidents of the publication. In the letters, explain who you think would read your work, or in other words, whatgroup do you think you would target. After you complete these, send all of your information enclosed with letters in the appropriate envelope. Now as soon as you send out these letters, start to create a brand newget married to one idea because if your idea strip with all new characters. Don’tgets turned down then you will give up. And always remember. If you receive a rejection from any of them, keep in mind that you are working on somethingbetter. You will be working on something new and more exciting and the rejection letter will not have any impact. With this in mind…【小题1】What is the advice from the writer in the first paragraph when youwant to succeed in your life?A.Stop doing anything until you find something quite suitable for your futurecareer.B.Put aside a certain amount of time every day to consider how to make aliving.C.Make a living by something that you truly like to do as your profession andwork hard at it.D.Perfect your talent only by drawing some cartoons.【小题2】The purpose of writing a letter to the president was to ____.A.get some money to support the later careerB.enclose the information on how to become cartoonists with the letterC.focus his attention on the workD.explain who would be the readers of the work【小题3】The underlined phrase “get married to one idea” in the last paragraph probably refers to ______.A.having a strong desire to get marriedB.fixing all attention on one ideaC.marrying someone is a good ideasD.refusing one idea to get married11、Why can’t some people even get an inch of what they dream of being?Blame it on pure dreaming and lack of surrounding goals for achieving theirdreams.Setting goals is very significant part of accomplishing and positive actions. It is like scaling(攀爬) a 200 feet construction and marking in the early hours onwhat feet you would like to reach at this specific period.People who set goals literally generate a map of their goal settings in life,。

高考英语二轮复习专项训练阅读理解(人生百味)及解析一、高中英语阅读理解人生百味类1.阅读理解Experts note that an unhealthy lifestyle can put you at great risk of heart disease and stroke. So doctors urge us to eat healthy foods, get exercise, stop smoking and limit our alcohol intake. But there is something else you can do. And it is free and easy. Smile!Dr. Chockalingam, a heart disease specialist in Columbia, advises his patients to smile. He says a smile may be one way to help your heart. "When we smile, the brain wiring changes. The chemicals that are released are more positive." He says smiling is the first step in fighting physical and emotional stress and its sometimes harmful effects on human health. This is not just New Age advice. Several studies support his opinion. When you feel stressed or under pressure, your body releases many natural hormones (荷尔蒙) including adrenaline and cortisol. Adrenaline increases your heart rate and blood pressure. Cortisol is the body's main stress hormone. It increases sugar in the bloodstream. If you are truly in danger, these hormones can help you. They are part of what we call our fight-or-flight response. However, when we are stressed for a long period, these stress hormones are ever-present in our bodies. And that, medical researchers warn, may lead to health problems.Researchers say the connection between stress and heart disease is still unclear. However, they claim that when people are stressed for long periods of time, they may have an unhealthy lifestyle, which can lead to health problems.Dr. Chockalingam says a smile may be one way to help. He tells his patients to smile 20 times an hour. To some, that might seem like a lot of smiling. Or some might even feel foolish ... smiling for seemingly no reason. 【英语】 高考英语阅读理解(人生百味)专题训练答案及解析

【英语】高考英语阅读理解(人生百味)专题训练答案及解析一、高中英语阅读理解人生百味类1.阅读理解Two of the saddest words in the English language are "if only". I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they convey regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment. My father is famous in our family for saying, "Take the extra minute to do it right." I always try to live by the "extra minute" rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents, I always thought about what I could do to avoid an "if only" moment, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a counter, or something that required a little more work such as taping padding (衬垫) onto the sharp corners of a glass coffee table.I don't only avoid those "if only" moments when it comes to safety. It's equally important to avoid "if only" in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say "I love you" or "I forgive you." When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday, I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldn't be here. But then I thought about the fact that he's 84 years old and I realized that I shouldn't give up an opportunity to see him. I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all.I know there will still be occasions when I have to say "if only" about something, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality. And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right, or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection, I know that I'm doing the right thing. I'm buying myself peace of mind and that's the best kind of insurance for my emotional well-being.(1)Which of the following is an example of the "extra minute" rule?A.Start the car the moment everyone is seated.B.Leave the room for a minute with the iron working.C.Wait for an extra minute so that the steak tastes better.D.Move an object out of the way before it trips someone.(2)The author decided to go to her office on Good Friday to ______.A.keep her appointment with the eye doctorB.meet her father who was already an old manC.join in the holiday celebration of the companyD.finish her work before the deadline approached(3)The underlined word "foregone" in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ______.A.abandonedckedC.avoidedD.taken(4)What is the best title for the passage?A.To Keep Emotional Well-beingB.To Prevent "If Only" MomentsC.To Follow the Most Useful RuleD.To Achieve the Peace of Mind【答案】(1)D(2)B(3)A(4)B【解析】【分析】本文是一篇夹叙夹议文,作者认为英语中最悲伤的两个词语是"if only",因为他们表达了遗憾。

最新高考英语二轮复习专项训练阅读理解(人生百味)及解析一、高中英语阅读理解人生百味类1.阅读理解When times get tough, we all look for ways to cut back. When we're hungry, we eat at home instead of going out. We take buses instead of taxis. And we wear our old designer jeans just a few months longer. With college expenses at all-time highs, high school students are eager to do anything to cut the cost of a university education. One cost-cutting proposal is to allow college students to get a bachelor's degree in three years instead of four. Educational institutions have been actively exploring ways to make the learning process more efficient. But there's a question: Would the quality of undergraduate education suffer? Few US universities have formally approved a "three-year degree" model.I doubt that mainstream North American colleges will carry out a three-year curriculum any time soon. For one thing, most universities already allow highly qualified students to graduate early by testing out of certain classes and obtaining a number of college credits. In addition, at famous universities, the committee who determine which courses are required and which courses are electives are unlikely to suddenly "throw out" one quarter of the required credits. Professors will resist "diluting (稀释)" the quality of the education they offer. In my opinion, a quality four-year education is always superior to a quality three-year education.A college education requires sufficient time for a student to become skilled in their major and do coursework in fields outside their major. It is not a good idea to water down education, any more than it's not a good idea to water down medicine. If we want to help students find their way through university, we should help them understand early on what knowledge and skills they need to have upon graduation. We should allow students to test out of as many courses as possible. We should give them a chance to earn money as interns (实习生) in meaningful part-time jobs that relate to their university studies, such as the five-year co-op program at Northeastern University.(1)Which of the following can best sum up the main idea?A.It's time to shorten the learning process.B.Best learning takes place over time.C.University education should be watered down.D.College education calls for reform.(2)We can learn from the passage that ________.A.most American universities are against the "three-year degree" modelB.many famous US universities are considering adopting the "three-year degree" modelC.professors are willing to accept the "three-year degree" modelD.The "three-year degree" model can make college learning more efficient(3)In most US universities, ________.A.college students are offered the co-op programB.electives' credits make up one quarter of the required creditsC.all students are required to finish four-year education before graduationD.some excellent students can graduate ahead of time(4)We can infer that________.A.the author is a college professor exploring ways to make learning more efficientB.the author thinks the cost of a university education is too high for people to affordC.the author considers the university education quality very importantD.the author pays special attention to the all-round development of college students【答案】(1)B(2)A(3)D(4)C【解析】【分析】本文是一篇议论文,作者认为把大学四年的学制缩短为三年不是一个好主意,保证足够的时间才能保证大学教育的质量。

(英语)高中英语阅读理解(人生百味)及其解题技巧及练习题(含答案)含解析一、高中英语阅读理解人生百味类1.阅读理解A few years back I worked in a university building that also housed a department full of psychologists, all of whom seemed to see us as perfect guinea pigs(豚鼠) for their latest theories. If an eager graduate student showed up in my office bearing desserts and asked me to pick one, I'd cast a careful glance and ask "Why?" before grabbing the apple pie.So one day, when someone from the Psychology Department posted instructions in the bathroom persuading all of us to "Think about five things for which you're grateful every day for a week!" my response was frankly doubtful. I did the math. Five things a day for seven days is a lot of brainpower to expend without so much as the promise of an apple pie.I wandered into the office of Heidi Zetzer, the director of our school's Psychological Services Clinic. "What's with the gratitude thing?" I asked. You don't ask an academic question-even a simple one unless you're prepared for a long answer. Heidi came alive, and I sat down. That's when I first heard the term "positive psychology". The gratitude thing, as I had called it, was but one small and simple element of the practice. "Kind of like training the brain to focus on joy," my friend Heidi explained. "It's only a week," she urged. "Try it." I did. And guess what? It worked. Every day for a week, I found five distinct things for which I was thankful. They had to be different every day. I couldn't get away with just being grateful for my wonderful husband. But I could, suggested Collie Conoley, another positive psychologist, express my gratitude for specific aspects of a certain person each day. He's a great cook. He always puts our family first.Life will never be perfect. I still see new stories that annoy me. The traffic in my city is maddening. I wish I could speed up my recovery. But with just one simple exercise, I'm rediscovering the peace of that old saying: accepting the things I can't change, working without complaint to change what I can, and being wise enough to know the difference. And all it took was a little gratitude.(1)What's the author's attitude toward the student with desserts?A. Cautious.B. Respectful.C. Indifferent.D. Supportive.(2)Why was the author doubtful about the instructions?A. Because she thought it wasn't worth the effort.B. Because she didn't like expressing thanks often.C. Because she needed to ask her friend to do it first.D. Because she could do five things every day easily.(3)What does Collie Conoley suggest the author should do?A. Be grateful to her wonderful husband.B. Be thankful for things but not people.C. Be a great cook and put her family first.D. Be specific about what she's thankful for.(4)What's the best title for the text?A. Don't Be Bothered by Small ThingsB. It was intended to be a one-time event focusing on technology and design. The event ended up losing money, and it was six years before the founders tried it again. This time it worked, and since 1990, the TED conference has been an annual event. There are now two held every year, with topics as diverse as music, medicine, and money. Other specialized spin-off conferences address narrower issues. The TED website came from a desire to share the conferences with the world, to "offer free knowledge from the world's most inspired thinkers," as the website puts it. The current version of the site was launched in April 2007, and contains videos of talks given at the TED conferences around the world. The talks are transcribed into hundreds of languages. The TED website is owned by the Sapling Foundation, a non profit devoted to fostering the spread of great ideas. The Sapling foundation acquired TED in 2001. Since then, it has been focusing on using TED to broadcast ideas that might change the world.TED, of course, isn't immune to criticism. However, he does not speak French. Richards' impressive feat is a useful example to show how artificial intelligence works—real AI. Both of Richard and AI take in massive amounts of data to achieve goals with unlimited memory and superman accuracy in a certain field. The potential applications for AI are extremely exciting. Because AI can outperform humans at routine tasks—provided the task is in one field with a lot of data—it is technically capable of replacing hundreds of millions of white and blue collar jobs in the next 15 years or so.But not every job will be replaced by AI. In fact four types of jobs are not at risk at all. First, there are creative jobs. AI needs to be given a goal to optimize. It cannot invent, like scientists, novelists and artists can. Second, the complex, strategic jobs—executives, diplomats, economists —go well beyond the AI limitation of single-field and Big Data. Then there are the as-yet-unknown jobs that will be created by AI.Are you worried that these three types of jobs won't employ as many people as AI will replace? Not to worry, as the fourth type is much larger: jobs where emotions are needed, such as teachers, nannies and doctors. These jobs require compassion, trust and sympathy—which AI does not have. And even if AI tried to fake it, nobody would want a robot telling them they have cancer, or a robot to babysit their children. So there will still be jobs in the age of AI. The key then must be retraining the workforce so people can do them. This must be the responsibility not just of the government, which can provide funds, but also of corporations and those who benefit most.(1)What is the main purpose of paragraph 1?A. To introduce the topic.B. To mention Nigel's feat.C. To stress the importance of good memory.D. To suggest humans go beyond AI in memory.(2)Which of the following best explains "outperform" underlined in paragraph 2?A. Be superior toB. Be inferior toC. Be similar toD. 【英语】高中英语阅读理解(人生百味)的技巧及练习题及练习题(含答案)含解析一、高中英语阅读理解人生百味类1.阅读理解Give yourself a test. Which way is the wind blowing? How many kinds of wildflowers can be seen from your front door? If your awareness is as sharp as it could be, you'll have no trouble answering these questions. Most of us observed much more as children than we do as adults. A child's day is filled with fascination, newness and wonder. Curiosity gave us all a natural awareness. But distinctions that were sharp to us as children become unclear; we are numb(麻木的)to new stimulation(刺激), new ideas. Relearning the art of seeing the world around us is quite simple, although it takes practice and requires breaking some bad habits. The first step in awakening senses is to stop predicting what we are going to see and feel before it occurs. This blocks awareness. One chilly night when I was hiking in the Rocky Mountains with some students, I mentioned that we were going to cross a mountain stream. The students began complaining about how cold it would be. We reached the stream, and they unwillingly walked ahead. They were almost knee-deep when they realized it was a hot spring. Later they all admitted they'd felt cold water at first.Another block to awareness is the obsession(痴迷) many of us have with naming things. I saw bird watchers who spotted a bird, immediately looked it up in field guides, and said, a "ruby-crowned kinglet" and checked it off. They no longer paid attention to the bird and never learned what it was doing. The pressures of "time" and "destination" are further blocks to awareness. I encountered many hikers who were headed to a distant camp-ground with just enough time to get there before dark. It seldom occurred to them to wander a bit, to take a moment to see what's around them. I asked them what they'd seen. "Oh, a few birds," they said. They seemed bent on their destinations.Nature seems to unfold to people who watch and wait. Next time you take a walk, no matter where it is, take in all the sights, sounds and sensations. Wander in this frame of mind and you will open a new dimension to your life.(1)According to Paragraph 2, compared with adults, children are more .A. anxious to do wondersB. sensitive to others' feelingsC. likely to develop unpleasant habitsD. eager to explore the world around them(2)What idea does the author convey in Paragraph 3?A. To avoid jumping to conclusions.B. To stop complaining all the time.C. To follow the teacher's advice.D. To admit mistakes honestly.(3)The bird watchers' behavior shows that they .A. are very patient in their observationB. are really fascinated by natureC. care only about the names of birdsD. question the accuracy of the field guides(4)Why do the hikers take no notice of the surroundings during the journey?A. The natural beauty isn't attractive to them.B. They focus on arriving at the camp in time.C. The forest in the dark is dangerous for them.D. They are keen to see rare birds at the destination.(5)In the passage, the author intends to tell us we should .A. fill our senses to feel the wonders of the worldB. get rid of some bad habits in our daily lifeC. open our mind to new things and ideasD. try our best to protect nature【答案】(1)D(2)A(3)C(4)B(5)A【解析】【分析】本文是一篇夹叙夹议文,我们有多久没有仔细观察我们周围的世界了。

Social networking sites have become extensions of the school hallways, so wou ld you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends? In the past the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with latest technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day to day lives as they always had because they had no need to know more about technology. However, more and more parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives. This realization has given many parents the motivation to education themselves about social networking sites. These days many people are attracted to social networking sites because they can choose who they have around them; there’s also a certain amount of control over p rivacy that we don’t get in real life. On the other hand if you do accept, then you could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way you did before.A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn’t take it personally if their child ignores their request, “When a teen ignores a parent’s friend request, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of their life where they want to be independent.”Perhaps talking with parents and giving explanations would help soften the blow if you do choose not to add them to your friends list.【小题1】From Paragraph 2, we learn that _______.A.parents feel secure about their privacy onlineB.social networks successfully fill the generation gapC.parents have realized the importance of social networksD.social networks offer a platform for parents to communicate【小题2】Teenag ers may refuse a parent’s friend request because _______.A.they hide something from their parentsB.they are unwilling to be watched by parentsC.their parents tend to fall behind in technologyD.their parents make negative comments on them【小题3】The passage is mainly about _______.A.privacy onlineB.social networksC.the generation gapD.parents’ friend requests【小题4】The passage is written mainly for _______.A.parents B.teenagersC.teachers D.researchers阅读下列短文, 从给的四个选项 (A、B、C和D) 中, 选出最佳选项。
