Since moving to Buffalo she’s become a big hockey fan and has encouraged me to start watching it. Unfortunately it’s very difficult to find hockey on television here in Alabama. Since hockey games don’t air very much on television I’ve had to look for different ways to watch hockey games.I often see websites that claim if you go to their website you can watch television on your computer. I try out many of these websites hoping that one of the television stations is a northern station that airs hockey games. Unfortunately, most of them don’t work. Either the site doesn’t really give you what they advertise or their video player doesn’t work properly. But finally I’ve found one website that actually works.Free Tube is a site that you can go to and watch Television online for free. You don’t have to download any kind of special software or pay money or even sign up for anything. All you have to do is go to Free Tube, choose your channel and start watching. The different channels to choose from are separated into different categories like news, business, entertainment, music and sports. You’re not going to find channels like NBC or ABC so you can watch the latest episode of Heroes or Grey’s Anatomy but it does include s ome popular channels like Cartoon Network and ESPN.There is also a movie section. Each movie channel airs different sorts of films like adventure, classics, comedy or horror and that channel will always air that kind of movies. The movie section also includes my favorite station called Maxx Trailers (预告片). Maxx Trailers airs nothing but movies trailers 24 hours a day. Some of the trailers are for movies coming out and some are for movies that have already been released but already released movies don’t go back farther than a couple of months. ks5uSo far I haven’t had any problems with Free Tube’s video player either. Whenever I choose a channel, the video almost always works and usually loads every quickly. The only problem I have with Free Tube is that there is currently a glitch if you’re using Firefox. Once you choose a channel you can’t select another channel to change to, your web browser will freeze up. So if you’re using Firefox, the only way to switch channels is to leave the site and re-enter the site, when choosing what channel you want to go to. However, Free Tube is aware of this glitch and is working with Mozilla to get it fixed right away.If you’re missing some show everyone is talking about like Grey’s Anatomy or Heroes, this isn’t really a s olution for that. But Free Tube is a good way to find channels that you weren’t aware of; there are several good stations to be found.56. The author mainly ________ in this passage.A. tells us his experience in using the Web.B. introduces Free Tube to the readersC. shows us the disadvantages of Free TubeD. shows us how to enjoy films online57. The author got interested in watching hockey games ________A. because he is a sports fanB. due to his sister’s influenceC. since everyone enjoys the gamesD. because he has nothing to do all day long58. From the passage we can learn that ______________A. the author is also very fond of moviesB. Maxx Trailers airs to-be-released moviesC. ABC is a very famous TV station in AmericaD. Firefox is the only software used to watch films online59. The underlined word “glitch” probably means _________A. coverB. changeC. noteD. faultSome novels simply entertain and others contain a powerful message in the story line and characters. In his first novel, A Wind In Montana, Mitch Davies tells a story about young adults and how they accept responsibility for their lives.A Wind in Montana is a great tale of two teenagers, Rory Coleman and Victoria Beach, high school students at the same school, who struggle to make the right decision for themselves. As each of them nears adulthood, they become more concerned with the future and set goals that will bring them happiness and a sense of achievement.Without any advice from his parents, Rory chooses to pursue (追求) a profession in chemistry, applies for a chemistry scholarship, and determines to do everything he can to achieve it. Along the path, Rory finds that even though he has a plan, there are obstacles (障碍) that could prevent him from realizing his goals. V ictoria’s struggles are different from Rory’s. Although her father has decided that she should become a professional musician, Victoria has other plans for her life. Together, Rory and Victoria attempt to follow their dreams, despite the obstacles in their paths. A Wind In Montana contains a lesson for all teens about to enter adulthood — that disappointment and setbacks (挫折) are going to occur no matter how determined they are and that they need to develop skills along the way that will help them deal with them effectively.Mitch Davies’ book stands out among today’s teen books that deal with imaginary situations. We have so easily been attracted by the promise and potential of diet products that we have stopped thinking about what diet products are doing to us. We are paying for products that harm us psychologically and physically.Diet products weaken us psychologically. On one level, we are not allowing our brain to admit that our weight problems lie not in actually losing the weight, but in controlling the consumption of fatty, high-calorie(卡), unhealthy foods. Diet products allow us to jump over the thinking stage and go straight for the counter instead. All we have to do is to swallow or recognize the word “diet” in food brands. On another level, diet products have greater psychological effects. Every time we have a zero-calorie drink, we are telling ourselves without our awareness that we don’t have to work to get results. Diet products make people believe that gain comes without pain, and that life can be without resistance and struggle. The danger of diet products lies not only in the psychological effects they have on us, but also in the physical harm that they cause. Diet foods can indirectly harm our bodies because consuming them instead of healthy foods means we are preventing our bodies from having basic nutrients(营养成分). Diet foods and diet pills contain zero calorie only because the diet industry has created chemicals to produce these wonder products. Diet products may not be nutritional, and the chemical that go into diet products are potentially dangerous. Now that we are aware of the effects that diet products have on us, it is time to seriously think about buying them. Losing weight lies in the power of minds, not in the power of chemicals. Once we realize this, we will be much better able to resist diet products, and therefore prevent the psychological harm that comes from using them.68. The first paragraph mainly tells us _____.A. diet products can bring out people’s potentialB. people have difficulty in choosing diet productsC. diet products are misleading peopleD. people are fed up with diet products69. One psychological effect of diet products is that people tend to ____.A. resist a variety of diet foodsB. hesitate before they enjoy diet foodsC. pay attention to their own eating habitsD. watch their weight rather than their diet70. The purpose of writing this passage is _________.A. to warn people of the side effect of diet productsB. to tell people how to lose weightC. to advise people to eat diet productsD. to introduce some diet products71. Which of the following shows the structure(结构)of the passage?CP: Central Point P: Point Sp: Sub-point(次要点) C: ConclusionEWe find that bright children are rarely held back by mixed ability teaching. On the contrary, both their knowledge and experience are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in streaming(把……按能力分班) pupils. It does not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the not-so-bright child. After all,it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top grade!Besides, it is rather unreal to grade pupils just according to their intellectual(智力的) ability. This is only one aspect of their total personality. We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their academic ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning. In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups: this gives them the opportunity to learn to co-operate, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to deal with personal problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyze and evaluate, and to communicate effectively in order to have the ability to become leaders. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teacher.Sometimes the pupils work in pairs;sometimes they work on individual tasks , and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is suitable. We encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently. An advanced pupil can do advanced work:it does not matter what age the child is. We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to attain this goal.72. We can know from the passage that the author’ s attitude towards “mixed-ability teaching” is______.A. approvingB. disapprovingC. questioningD. inactive73. The underlined words “held back” in Paragraph 1 probably means “______”.A. drawn to their studiesB. forced to study in the lower classesC. made to remain in the same classesD. prevented from advancing74. Which of the following is NOT MENTIONED in the third paragraph?A. Pupils also learn to develop their reasoning abilities.B. Pupils also learn how to participate in teaching activitiesC. Group work gives pupils the chance to learn to work together with others.75. The author’s purpose in writing this passage is to ______.A. offer advice on the proper use of the libraryB. recommend pair work and group work for classroom activitiesC. argue for teaching bright and not-so-bright pupils in the same classD. tell us the importance of proper formal classroom teachingV. 短文填词。

Households throw away a fifth of the food they buy, wasting it for reasons ranging from cooking too much to not using it before it goes bad, the study showed. Consumption is the top area where food is wasted in the UK, the study said. Farmers respond to consumer demands for high-quality food with standards that can lead to the crop being wasted. Some supermarkets have started marketing “odd shapes and sizes” of fruit and veg etables, though. Also, more UK consumers are prepared to accept “ugly” fruit and vegetables, amid concerns over sustainability(可持续发展) and food prices, the research said.In developing countries, much of the loss of food occurs during post-harvesting storage, processing and packaging.Tackling waste globally is necessary to feed a growing world population sustainably. One in eight people worldwide doesn’t have enough food, the report said.Around a third of food produced globally is lost or wasted.Professor Tim Benton, an expert on food security at the University of Leeds, said: “Over 5 million people in the UK live in poverty, where basic food provision is a daily challenge.”Nearly 400,000 people used food banks last year, according to the Trussell Trust. “At the same time, 15 million tons of food is wasted annually, with nearly half thrown away within UK households. Reducing the scale(范围) of losses and waste throughout the food system is a crucial step.”The report highlights priorities(优先事项) for research to help reduce food waste, including improving harvesting and packaging technologies and seasonal weather prediction.【小题1】 Food waste in developing nations is mainly due to .A.fast growing populationsB.huge demand for high-quality foodsC.poor technology in food industriesD.people’s lack of concern about food shortages【小题2】We can conclude from the article that .A.over half of the food produce in the UK is wasted within households B.“ugly” fruits and vegetables are becoming more and more p opular in the UK C.avoiding food waste could, by itself, solve food shortage problems around the worldD.developing better farming and packaging technologies is key to reducing food waste【小题3】Which of the following statements might Professor Tim Benton agree with? A.British farmers should keep up with their high growing standards.B.The number of people living in poverty is growing too fast in Britain. C.There is still much to do to improve British people’s awareness of food sustainability.D.British supermarkets should be encouraged to sell food of odd shapes and sizes. 【小题4】What is suggested in the report?A.Cutting food prices.B.Using different approaches to reduce food waste.C.Improving the appearance of food.D.Cooking at home more often.7.There are 61 million “left-behind children” in central and western China, the adults have to seek jobs in the cities.A.whoB.whichC.whenD.where8.Here is a task for you: try to make as many kinds of facial expressions as you can. How many can you come up with?Facial expressions are like a window to your emotions inside. Scientists used to believe that we only have six basic emotions-happy, sad, fearful, angry, surprised and disgusted-and ,therefore, each of our facial expressions falls into one of the six categories. But it turns out thatthis is just the tip of the iceberg. In a recent study, scientists from Ohio State University, US, mapped 21 different facial expressions, more than tripling(是……的三倍) the original number, reported Science Daily.Restricting emotions to just six categories is like “painting only using primary colors”, said Aleix Martinez, the lead researcher. He believed that human emotions are much richer than that, which is why he and his team decided to use advanced computer technology for further investigation. In the experiment, scientists photographed 230 volunteers-100 male and 130female-while they made faces in response to different words such as “you smell a bad odor(气味)”. They then closely studied the images by examining key muscles on volunteers’ faces, such as the corners of the mouth or the outer edge of the eyebrow, and finally identified 21 different expressions. These included what seem to becontradictory emotions such as “happily disgusted” and “sadly angry”, which scientists call “compound(混合的) emotions”.Take “happily disgusted” as an example.” Putting on a happy face is usually done by drawing up the cheeks and smiling while a disgusted face often involves a scrunched-up(皱起的) nose and eyes. So the “happily disgusted” emotion created an expression that combined the smile of happy with the scrunched-up eyes and nose of disgusted. It was the emotion test subjects felt when something “gross(恶心的)” happened that was also funny-for example, when people spill(洒出) a lot of food on their clothes.Similarly, “happily surprised” is an expression for receiving unexpected good news. “Sadly angry” is the face we make when someone we care about makes us angry. According to Martinez, the researchers’ next step is to study the pathw ays and chemicals in the brain that activate(激活) and recognize those emotions. He believes that this could lead to effective treatments for people who suffer from conditions such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder(PTSD,创伤后应激障碍), which involves a lack of rec ognition of other people’s emotions.【小题1】The underlined part “this is just the tip of the iceberg” in Paragraph 3 probably means .A.this is a truth known to us allB.this is the total amount of somethingC.this is easily seen or discoveredD.this is only the smallest and most obvious part of something【小题2】How does the author explain the definition of “compound emotions” in the article?A.With comparisons.B.Through examples.C.Through cause and effect analysis.D.By presenting research findings.【小题3】According to the article, people are likely to become happily disgusted when .A.they receive unexpected good newsB.someone they don’t care about makes them happyC.something unpleasant but also funny happensD.they successfully escape from a dangerous situation【小题4】What can we conclude from the article?A. There are several contradictory emotions we tend to overlook.B. Females have more contradictory emotions than males do.C. The chemicals in the brain that activate emotions are easy to identify.D. Martinez’s next goal is to find an effective cure for people who suffer from PTSD.9.As city boy accustomed to the concrete building, streams of vehicles and skies of smog, I found farm life “eye-opening” experience.A.the; aB.the; anC.a; theD.a; an10.Big Blue WhaleNicola DaviesIllustrated(为……作插图) by Nick MalandNicola Davies provides a look at nature’s largest living creature in Big Blue Whale.
