There is a very instructive incident involving the life of Alexander the Great, King of Greek. Alexander, afterconquering many kingdoms, was returning home.On the way, he fell ill and it took him to his death bed. With death staring him in his face, Alexander realized his conquests, his great army, his sharp sword and all his wealth were of no consequence. So, he lay helplessly waiting to breathe his last. He called his generals and said, “I will depart from this world soon, and I have three wishes. Please carry them out without fail.”“My first desire is th at,” said Alexander, “my physicians alone must carry my coffin.” After a pause, he continued, “Secondly, I desire that when my coffin is being carriedto the grave, the path leading to the graveyard be strewn (撒满) with gold, silver and precious stones which I have collected.” The King continued, “My third and last wish is that both my hands should be kept hanging out of myco ffin.” Alexander's favorite general kissed his hand and pressed them to his heart. “Oh King, we assure you that your wishes will all be fulfilled. But tell us why doyou make such strange wishes?”Alexander took a deep breath and said, “I would like the world to know of the three lessons I have just learnt. I want my physicians to carry my coffin because people should realize that no doctor can really cure any bodies. Theyare powerless and cannot save a person from the clutchesof death. So let people not take life for granted.“The second wish of strewing gold, silver and other riches on the way to the graveyard is to tell people that not even a bit of gold will come with me. I spent all my life earning riches but cannot take anything with me. Let people realize that it is just a waste of time to chase wealth.“And about my third wish of having my hands hanging out of the coffin, I wish people to know that I cameemptyhanded into this world and emptyhanded out of this world.” With these words, the King closed his eyes. Ⅰ阅读理解(2018·成都高三测试)“Hungary?”I looked at my schoolheadmaster in confusion.“I never mentioned wanting to go toHungary.”And with that,my adventure started. My name is Jonathan Diamond and I just finished an amazingschool exchange year in Hungary.Going on an exchange had always been my dream. When my high school offered an allyear program,I jumped at the opportunity. It would pay for almost everything and all I had to do was buy a plane ticket.I knew where I wanted to go:Spain, the country of dancers wearing flowing red dresses. So when I heard that I was going to Hungary,I was pretty shocked. But I decided to make the best of it,since it was, after all,a onceinalifetime opportunity. Before I knew it,I was on the airplane, leaving for Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport,Hungary.I had difficult times when I almost gave up.Hungarian is the hardest language on the planet.Cultural differences occasionally embarrassed both my peers and me.I had to give up eating carrots,my beautiful favorite, for Hungarians think carrots are rubbish in their country. The change in the landscape was amazing, looking nothing like skyscrapers, bullet trains, cars, and people in tiny houses that I had been accustomed to.Gradually,I fell in love with the relaxing lifestyle, the warmhearted people, and getting home at 2:30 p.m.at the latest from school. And I was sad to leave on my very last day.Having the host family who took me as one of their own members was the best thing I’ve ever experienced. From my little sisters,I learned how to embrace life to its fullest. From my brothers I learned that it’s OK for a boy to run around the house. From my host parents I learned to stay positive,to smile and that when you pick the right people and take their hands, suddenly, you become friends.【解题导语】本文是一篇记叙文,讲述作者作为一个交换生在国外学习的经历和感受。

Unit 4 SharingⅠ阅读理解AMany years ago, when we were a young couple with two small children, aged 2 and 4, we were practically impecunious. My inlaws lived from hand to mouth, so we didn’t expect any help from them. My parents lived a great distance away, and I was too ashamed to let them know about our situation. My husband was trying to earn a living with an old pickup truck, carrying groceries for local shopkeepers, but it was constantly breaking down. It took almost all the money we had to have it fixed. The truck was also the only means of transportation for us.We lived in the countryside, and we always used the back door because the driveway led to it. One winter evening, I stepped outside to take a bag of trash to the barrel and almost tripped over something. It was nearly dark, and I had to bend down to see what it was. I could hardly believe my eyes. There sat a large basket loaded with food.It was heavy, so I called my husband to carry it into the house. Once inside, we discovered two loaves of bread, some butter, several cans of vegetables, a can of orange sauce, and a large turkey. There was so much that I couldn’t remember it all, but it was everything we needed to fix a wonderful dinner—everything except potatoes.A little while later I remembered that I hadn’t taken the trash to the barrel. By now it was dark, so I had to turn on the yard light—and that’s when I spotted a small bag of potatoes sitting on the porch. That dinner was the best I could remember. We weren’t able to thank our donators, though, because we never found out who had been so generous in helping a struggling young family. Whoever it was, we are forever grateful.【解题导语】本文是一篇记叙文。

Ⅰ阅读理解(2018〃郑州一中高三入学测试)Enjoying a musical performance no longer requires a costly ticket or a trip to a theater. These days, musicians are performing in private homes,at haircutting shops,at airports...even on ferry boats.Musicians like house concerts. At music clubs, they often have to perform over loud conversation or deal with people who have had too much alcohol.People at house concerts are more focused on listening to the music.Just a few hours before the Bombadils started singing at the O’Hair Salon,Lindsay was cutting hair and Tamera was doing facials. Then, they moved chairs and microphones to create a small performance space. The Bombadils made music in the front part of the hair salon, near the hairdryers and makeup tables.‚This is our first show at a hair salon,‛Sarah Frank of the Bombadils told concertgoers at last week’s performance.Frank said she and band members,Luke Fraser and Kaitlyn Raitz had a great time ‚interacting‛with the audience.Concerts in people’s homes,or small businesses such as O’Hair’s,are becoming more popular, musicians say.‚There is a more relaxed atmosphere,‛said Domenic Cicala,a musician who opened up his O’Hair Salon to concerts.‚People really get to know the artists.‛At house concerts, people get time before and after concerts to meet the performers.Often, the hosts or guests will provide food and drink.‚People really like listening to music in the living room of a friend,‛said Matt Hart, with Aubrey Zoli making up the Local Strangers,a folkrock group based in Seattle. At many such concerts, the musicians do not need microphones.Yet,every word of their songs can be heard.【解题导语】本文主要介绍了现代音乐会在举办场地的选择上更加多样化,私人居所、理发店、机场等都成为音乐家表演的场所,并且备受青睐。

Ⅰ 阅读理解A(2018 ·都高三诊疗成)Flaubert had it that“ one way of tolerating existence is to lose oneselfin literature as in an unending party”It.turns out that reading doesn’t only help us to tolerate existence, but actually lengthens it.A recent study by Yale University researchers, published online in the journal Social Science&Medicine, concluded that “ book readers experienced a 20 percent reduction in the risk of deathover the 12 years of follow- up compared to non- readers”.The data was obtained from the study sponsored by the National Institute on Aging. The studylooked at 3 ,635 subjects, all older than 50, whom the researchers divided into three groups :those who didn ’t read books, those who read up to 3.5 hours a week and those who read morethan 3.5 hours a week. The findings were remarkable : on average, book readers survived almost two years longerthan those who didn ’t crack open a book. The more the subjects read, the longer they lived, butas little as 30 minutes a day was still beneficial in terms of survival.Accounting for factors such as education level, income and health status, the study found thatthose who read more than 3.5 hours weekly were 23 percent less likely to die during that 12- yearperiod. Those who read up to 3.5 hours — an average of a half hour a day —were 17 percent lesslikely.“ In other words, just like a healthy diet and exercise, books appear to promote a significantsurvival advantage ,” the authors concluded. Why or how that ’ s__the__case remains unclear; the research showed only an association between book reading and longevity, not a causal relationship. But the findings are not so surprising.Other recent research showed that reading novels appears to increase both brain connectivity and sympathy.【解题导语】研究发现,阅读和长寿有必定的联系,阅读者的均匀寿命比不念书的人长快要两岁。

Inspired by the current litigation (诉讼)in Flint, Michigan, a case of water pollution from 2014 to 2015, Rao designed a new testing system that resulted in her being named America’s Top Young Scientist for 2017.Rao had been following the water problem for about two years. She was amazed by the number of people affected by lead pollution in water and wanted to do something to change this. Gitanjali spent months trying to convince local high schools and colleges to give her lab time to continue her experiment. At home, Gitanjali worked on her project in the “science room” she asked her parents to c reate for her. Rao has created a device that uses three parts: a cartridge, a Bluetooth reader and an app. To put it simply, the cartridge contains carbon nanotubes(纳米管) that react to lead. This reaction is then registered by the Bluetooth reader, which sends a signal to a mobile app that can tell you immediately if your water is safe to drink.Rao appropriately named the device Tethys after the Greek goddess of fresh water, and is hoping to make a little improvement to get the device on the market. While we may not be aware of any lead pollution present in our aging pipelines, lead poisoning can cause delays in physical and mental development. With Rao believing that the “purpose of science is to make a difference”, her incredible invention could make a difference to millions of people in the United States.24. What do we know about Rao’s device?A. It’s cheap and quick.B. It’s cheap and inaccurate.C. It’s expensive and reliable.D. It’s portable and time-consuming.25. What made Rao have the idea of designing the device?A. Her parents’ suggestions.B. The name of the Greek goddess.C. Her interest in settling real problems.D. The water pollution litigation in Flint.26. What do the carbon nanotubes function as?A. Sending immediate signals.B. Recording the reaction results.C. Detecting the presence of lead.D. Showing the water quality results.27. What does the author think of Rao’s invention?A. It will lead Rao to make a fortune.B. It will help millions of Americans drink safe water.C. It will promote the development of science in America.D. It will soon settle the lead-polluted problem thoroughly.CIt was always very cold on that lake shore in the night, but we had plenty of blankets and were warm enough. We never moved a muscle all night, but waked at early dawn in the original positions, and got up at once, thoroughly refreshed. There is no end of medicine in such an experience. That morning we could have defeated ten such people as we were the day before—sick ones at any rate. But the world is slow, and people will go to “water cures” and “movement cures” and to foreign lands for health. Three months of camp life on Lake Tahoe would bring back Egyptian mummy to life, and give him a healthy appetite. I do not mean the oldest and driest mummies, of course, but fresher ones. The air up there in the clouds is very pure and fine. And why shouldn’t it be? —it is the same the angels breathe. I think that hardly any amount of tiredness can be gathered together that a man cannot sleep off in one night on the sand by its side. Not under a roof, but under the sky; it seldom or never rains there in the summertime. I know a man who went there to die. But he made a failure of it. He was a skeleton (骨瘦如柴的人) when he came, and could barely stand. He had no appetite, and did nothing but read tracts (小册子) and reflect on the future. Three months later he was sleeping out of doors regularly, eating all he could hold, three times a day, and hunting game over the mountains three thousand feet high for fun. And he was a skeleton no longer, but weighed part of a ton. This is no fancy sketch, but the truth. His disease was consumption. I confidently recommend his experience to other skeletons.—Mark Twain28. Which of the following is the topic of the passage?A. How to live near Lake TahoeB. The imagination of Lake TahoeC. The area of Lake Tahoe has amazing powers to bring back people’s healthD. Lake Tahoe’s air and water quality are fantastic for Egyptian mummies29. Ⅰ阅读理解A(2018·成都高三诊断)Flaubert had it that “one way of tolerating existence is to lose oneself in literature as in an unending party”. It turns out that reading doesn’t only help us to tolerate existence, but actually lengthens it.A recent study by Yale University researchers, published online in the journal Social Science & Medicine, concluded that “book readers experienced a 20 percent reduction in the risk of death over the 12 years of followup compared to nonreaders”.The data was obtained from the study sponsored by the National Institute on Aging. The study looked at 3,635 subjects, all older than 50, whom the researchers divided into three groups:those who didn’t read books, those who read up to 3.5 hours a week and those who read more than 3.5 hours a week. The findings were remarkable:on average, book readers survived almost two years longer than those who didn’t crack open a book. The more the subjects read, the longer they lived, but as little as 30 minutes a day was still beneficial in terms of survival.Accounting for factors such as education level, income and health status, the study found that those who read more than 3.5 hours weekly were 23 percent less likely to die during that 12year period. Those who read up to 3.5 hours—an average of a half hour a day—were 17 percent less likely.“In other words, just like a healthy diet and exercise, books appear to promote a significant survival advantage,” the authors concluded. Why or how that’s__the__case remains unclear;the research showed only an association between book reading and longevity, not a causal relationship. But the findings are not so surprising. Other recent research showed that reading novels appears to increase both brain connectivity and sympathy.【解题导语】研究发现,阅读和长寿有一定的联系,阅读者的平均寿命比不读书的人长将近两岁。

Ⅰ阅读理解AAs I began my junior year of college, I began to think of plans after graduation. I knew that I wanted to work in the field of my major, public relations. But I also knew that it was difficult to find a position considering my inexperience. That was when I decided to pursue an internship(实习工作).So I chose to talk to my advisor first. He had worked in the field of public relations for many years before he became a professor, and therefore had numerous contacts and associates in the field. After talking to him about a few of the positions, I decided to pursue the Cincinnati Fine Arts Fund because of my interest in the arts and the passion I would feel working for a nonprofit organization. I sent out a cover letter and a resume and was hired on the spot in the interview.I soon began my position. After class on Tuesdays and Thursdays, I would drive to work and apply all the skills I was learning in the classroom. I was amazed at the amount of practical knowledge in class that was directly applicable to my internship position. It became a very useful and beneficial experience. Not only was I working for arts organizations and seeing my name printed on documents I had created, but also gaining confidence in my skills and myself. As the semester came to a close, I finished my work withthe Fine Arts Fund. Although I didn’t take away any money for the internship, I gained many different kinds of experience and the knowledge that I was capable of accomplishing professional tasks. And that kind of confidence was invaluable to me as I sat down to interview for my next internship.【解题导语】作者上大三时就开始考虑自己的未来,考虑到实习经验在就业中的重要性,作者在导师的建议下找到了一个实习岗位,尽管没有挣到钱,但是所积累的经验让作者感到很值得。

选修八Unit 2 高考提能练阅读理解·组块专练——练速度(限时:35分钟)Ⅰ.阅读理解A(2018·潍坊市高三一模)Blind Dates at Alchemy in the DarkSoup on my nose, a nearly spilt glass of wine and chocolate down my white blouse, as blind dates suggest, this was a really messy one. I had never made so much noise with plates and glasses, nor had I dined with a never-before-met companion. This blind date was quite different: we could see nothing. “Put your left hand on my shoulder, and then we’ll take small steps forward,” said Michael, the visually impaired waiter, in an East London accent. We three felt our way carefully bumping past heavy curtains before being arranged at the dining table, where we would eat and drink three completely secret and unseen courses.Welcome to Alchemy in the Dark, Hong Kong’s first restaurant in total darkness. Upon arrival, diners briefly tell the chef about their allergies (过敏性反应), lock away their mobile phones and enter the windowless restaurant, which can seat 25 customers. When the meal is over, the contents of the delicious menu are shown — often to the diners’surprise. “This is definitely duck,” my companion said, while eating chicken. “This soup,”I declared, “is carrot and coriander.” Even the tooclose smell did not reveal the real tomato and cumin flavors. Dining in the dark changes everything: the senseof smell is heightened, manners go out of the window — using your hands to feel around the plates becomes normal —and there is a strange thrill in being able to ignore your facial expressions. Best of all? You don’t have to spend hours beforehand wondering what to wear.Alchemy in the Dark is at 16 Arbuthnot Road, Central, tel: 6821 2801 and is open Monday to Saturday, from 7 pm to 11 pm. Reservations are required. A three-course meal with wine pairing costs HK$700 per person. 5% of all profits go to The Hong Kong Society for the Blind.语篇解读:本文为一篇记叙文。

B(2018·郑州市第一次质检)Drinks Have No WingsYou may have heard that “Red Bull gives you wings”. But while most people take the advertising slogan as a metaphor (隐喻), some Americans seem to have taken it very seriously.Benjamin Careathers had been drinking the drink for 10 years, expecting to at least feel more energetic, but nothing happened.Feeling fooled by the ad, he took the issue to court in January, 2018.In October, the Austria-based company agreed to pay $6.5 million (39.7 million yuan) to customers who have bought the drink since 2002. People in the US can apply for a share through energydrinksettlement before March,2018.But is the case really that ridiculous?Red Bull said they had done nothing wrong and they only paid the money to save the cost and trouble of legal action. However, the suit told a different story. Even though there is no evidence that Red Bull energy drinks provide more benefit for consumers than a cup of coffee, the company markets their products as a superior source of energy that costs little.“Such conduct means that Red Bull’s advertising and marketing is not just ’puffery’,but is misleading and therefore actionable (可诉讼的),” the suit said. The company said that the drink could promote healthy joints and rce the risk of eye diseases. However, according to the organization, the product contains a lot of sugar, which could actually lead to many health problems.Coca-Cola agreed to pay $1.2 million in compensation in July. But to fully stop the company from linking the drink to health benefits, Truth in Advertising, another non-profit organization, took the issue to court again in late October.False advertisements have become a common problem around the world. China changed its consumer rights law last year to ban advertising companies and media from making or publishing false advertisements. Celebrities (明星) are also made responsible if they endorse (代言) false or substandard products.语篇解读:本文以“红牛”为例,告诉我们夸大其辞做虚假宣传的商家会受到法律的严惩。
