大学体验英语综合教程课堂辅导Book 3Unit 5-lead in-交际实战Task 1:A: Oh , I can’t even believe it! My mum’s determined.B: What do you mean by that?A: Well, it’s obvious that when she was young she wanted to be a fashion designer ;but then she met my dad and they fell in love and then I came along...and somehow she never got round to it.B: Well, she has been busy enough with other things.A: Yeah...but now she says that because my sister and I have both left home she’s decided to realize her dream of a fashion designer.B: She’s crazy!A: Why do you think so?B: She’s spent all her life working, right? So now she ought to enjoy her retirement. Old age should be about peace and quiet...relaxation...surrounded by children and grandchildren.A: She doesn’t have any grandchildr en and neither my sister nor I live close enough to visit her frequently. Now, I’m definitely for continuing education. Let her realize her potential.B: Well, count me out. However, if it’s what she wants...maybe one is never too old to learn.Task 2:A: Do you have any idea about good graduate schools?B: Not really. Have you decided to do graduate study then?A: Of course! Aren’t you going to?B: No, I think it’s better to get some work experience first.A: But a Master’s degree would mean you are better equipped before plunging into society and it would help you get a higher salary.B: That may be the case, but I’ve been talking with people about it and some say graduate study is a waste of time —that work experience and practical skills are more valuab le. What’s more, I’ve spent so many years with my head stuck in books! I want to get out and learn something else! In fact, I’ve already got a couple of interviews lined up.A: But what kind of work can you expect to get without graduate experience?B: Wel l, I don’t expect to start out as a CEO! I’ll be quite satisfied to work my way up; I’ll do some training courses and hopefully rise through promotion.A: That sounds interesting. I didn’t know that. But to be honest, I like the student life and I think I’ll stick to it as long as possible.B: Maybe we should compare our progress in ten years’ time and see how far each of us has got...A: That sounds a good idea!。

大学体验英语Unit,3Book 3How about business culture? They drink coco-cola; eat Italian pizzas; wear Nike sneakers; watch Hollywood movies. They have adopted western values and western way of life with the foreign things, our lives have been enriched, we can incorporate sth from the foreign culture into our own culture with the economic development. What is the Ethical business practice? Producing products that are good to the well-being of people and the environment; pricing products and service fairly; offering good after-sale services; raising funds for charities.Since its open-door policy of the late 1970s, China has rapidly become a rising global economic power. Since China's accession登记入册to the World Trade Organization (WTO) / China's entry into the WTO in 2002, China is now officially fully open for business and may soon be the biggest economy in the world. No one in a managerial career can afford to ignore a market that comprises one-fifth of the world's population. More and more foreign investors start to do business in china mainly in high-tech, agricultural, forestry, telecommunication and energy industry. China's wto entry marks a watershed分水岭;流域;转折点in its ongoing reform and modernization program, seeing the country adapt its legal and regulatory framework of foreign trade and investment in line with its wto commitments承诺,保证. As a major emerging market which embraces new business opportunities and challengers, foreign investors are more likely to start doing their business in china.Advantages in doing business in china are as follows:major emerging market, large trained labor pool, favorable business atmosphere, dynamic fast-growing economy, rapidly increasing consumer wealth, very low employment costs.Furthermore, as a dynamic market and international investors and buyers can find a wide range of quality products at very competitive prices to start their business, for instance, lots of investors start doing business in china in producing textiles, apparel衣服;服装and footwear; raw materials, metals and chemicals; toys and handicrafts; and foodstuffs. Besides the obvious potential for selling consumer goods, china hasa requirement for a wide range of agricultural and industrial raw materials, high tech components, capital goods and services. Due to the rapid development of the Chinese economy, it offers sellers ample opportunity to place goods in this fast growing economy to expand their worldwide business. Many top brand names from across the world can now be found in the local high street of most major Chinese cities. Alongside summaries of theoretical research, Doing Business in China provides a perceptual toolkit工具包,工具箱which will enable the businessperson or student to do business in China and apply that knowledge back in the West.China has changed enormously over the last 20 years. Its economy has been growing at 10% a year, and it's on track to be the world‟s largest economy soon. Today, 80% of the world‟s electronic goods are made in China. As a result, more and more western companies want to do business in China. But how easy is it for a westerner to do business there? Here are some tips from the British Embassy in Beijing.Take your time. In the west, business is ruled by deadlines. Chinese business people seem to act slowly by western standards, so be prepared to wait for decisions.Build relationships. In the west, it's usual to do business first, and then see if a relationship is possible. In China, it's the opposite. You need to build a relationship before you can do business. This leads to the idea of …guanxi‟. Guanxi means using personal contacts and relationships to do business, and westerners need to understand how real and strong this is in China. It can also be useful to find a reliable Chinese ally同盟者;伙伴to work with you. He or she will be able to help with language or cultural problems and will also be able to understand Chinese body language. Remember too that a visit by a westerner is often seen as a great honour by Chinese companies. You must rem ember to respect …face‟. Face means having high status with your peers. Face can be lost, given or earned. Never criticize or insult someone in front of others, as losing face will make it impossible to make a deal. On the other hand, if you praise someone by saying good things about him or her, then he or she will gain face, but be careful not to do it too much.Accept the pecking啄食;吹毛求疵order. Hierarchy层级;等级制度is very important in China, and the group is more important than the individual. In business, Chinese people often don't like taking responsibility individually and may also not like giving opinions in front of peers, in case they lose face. All these tricks of the trade can help you to play the game and do business successfully in China. Be prepared, and be patient if you want to be a winner in China. The management of a large company is composed of the CEO(chief executive officer) and senior executives(members of the board of directors), departmental managers(who are in charge of various departments, such as sales department, production department),supervisors(responsible for the day-to-day work in offices),general staff and junior staff(secretaries and clerks). The running of a company covers a variety of areas including finance, marketing, human resources, information and customer relations. Major decisions concerning the manufacturing of a product, pricing, investment, the choice of a business partner, negotiation policies are usually reached at board meetings, which are held regularly .A staff meeting is held if a major change of company policy is to be announced. One of the routine jobs of a company is welcoming visitors, which is important in establishing good relationships with potential business partners, clients or customers. Normally it is the company’s receptionist who welcomes the visitor and directs him or her to the appropriate person.Business must consider at least six essential aspects of management: 1) assets资产;财产(financial resources), 2)natural resources, 3)labor, 4)communications 5)marketing, 6)organization leadership.Reasons for the success of a company:First, they pay special attention to the image of their companies. South Korean companies have not been very much impacted by the financial crisis. Some of them are seeing the crisis as opportunities to aggressively develop and expand their business in China and also globally. The current crisis is different from the 1997 crisis. It is actually a crisis of morality to deal with the impact of the economic slowdown. China and Korea have a 3,000-year relationship, so there aren't many cultural barriers.I think for South Korean enterprises that were or are doing business in China, they need to treat their customers and business partners like sisters and brothers, showing social responsibility and developing long-term relationships, especially during the difficult times. Also, they should concentrate on their strengths and keep trying to expand their global networks of markets. There are many companies doing international business successfully without bribery.Retailer---retail outlets//retail dealer//sell goods by retailThis is an article that is retailed at $100Do you buy wholesale or retail?A wholesale dealer—a wholesalerSell by wholesaleOur business is wholesale (adj.) only.We buy goods wholesale.(adv.)With ads, people save a lot of time in shopping, looking for jobs, etc , for ads provide the most direct, comprehensive and detailed information about household goods. When he returned, he found that air had been worked intothe mixture. He decided not to discard the batch of soap because of such a small error, and he poured the soap into the frames. The soap hardened and it was cut, packaged, and shipped.A few weeks later, letters began arriving at Proctor & Gamble asking for more of the soap that floated. The workman’s error had turned into a selling point! Harley Proctor came up with the name “Ivory” while listening to a Bible reading at church one morning in 1879.Think about it:1.A bathtub battleship is a toy battleship made of Ivory Soap that children play in a bathtub.2.It is pure and it floats.3.It took advantage of a successful nationwide advertising campaign.Word study:Spotless---extremely clean•Even in the most spotless homes, carpets need regular vacuuming to keep them looking good.•She seemed the perfect match for the prince — young and pretty with a spotless reputation.status n.— 1) high social position; recognition and respect by others2) one’s legal position, or condition•Nurses are undervalued, and they never enjoy the same status as doctors.•The status of black Americans was not admitted until 1965 when the Voting Act was passed.rival— 1) v. to equal; to be as good as or reach the same standard as2) n. one who attempts to equal or surpass another; acompetitor.•No computer can rival a human brain.•Cassette recorders cannot rival CD players in sound quality.•She and I are rivals for the swimming prize.by means of—by using•The foreigner tried to make himself understood by means of body language.•Thoughts are expressed most often by means of words. exceed v.— to be greater than•Dustin Hoffman’s performance in Rain Man exceeded all expectations.•The budget of the research exceeds $700 million a year.He exceeds me in courage.phenomenon n. It must have witnessed a lot of great events of American history.2. Little boys enjoy converting Ivory Soap into bathtub battleships because of its floating feature, and Ivorydale is the birthplace of the famous brand of Ivory Soap.3. It may not be actually true. It is likely that the author just wants to show to the readers how popular Ivory Soap is to Americans.4. The popularity of Ivory Soap with generations of Americans is rather unusual and beyond imagination, thus it is called a phenomenon.Summary of passage A: The writer uses the example of P&G’s product to illustrate the potential that lies in mass marketing and cleverly planned advertising and the importance of recognizable brand names. The passage traces the history of Ivory Soap, first produced in 1879, and discusses the campaigns which were used to promote sales, particularly the idea that the soap is so pure that it floats, proved so successful that they are still used today. The passage also examines the development of P&G itself, from a small-scale operation founded by two immigrants to a multinational empire of today. At the same time we also learn about the origin of the expression “soap opera”, in itself another modern global phenomenon.Translation:1.Thoughts are expressed by means of language.2.I have bought so many new books this year that it’s really difficult for me to keep count of them.3.The old lady feels assured that her son will come back home today to celebrate her birthday.4.His mother insisted that his pocket money should not exceed 100 yuan per month.5.We bought a car last month, which was registered under my name.Passage B: Word Study:Have ambitions to do---He is a doctor rather than a teacher. He comes in the hope that he will see her and make her happy.Retailer---retail outlets//retail dealer//sell goods by retailThis is an article that is retailed at $100Do you buy wholesale or retail?A wholesale dealer—a wholesalerSell by wholesaleOur business is wholesale (adj.) only.We buy goods wholesale.(adv.)nostalgiaBeat one’s expectations---unexpectedly---out of one’s expectationOpen up---to---The funds opened up free education to more school-age children.Einstein’s theories of relativity opened up a whole new world to us.On---basisHe works on a once-a week basis//on a short-term basisOn the basis of---according toNo good decision can be made on the basis of incorrectinformation. He has to have a good rest on the basis of the medical reports he has received.Has contracted with sb---We have contracted with a big supermarket for the sale of our product.Cars can rival subways for speed in going to different areas in big city. Please chill the fruit salad until serving time.Haier Group was incorporated in 1984.Starting out with imported German refrigerator technology and has witnessed its 3 stages of development:Building a brand name(1984-1991): 7 years to build up a strong brand name in refrigerators through a well-planned total quality control system.Diversified development(1992-1998) 7 years for diversifying the products catalog to avoid having all the company’s eggs in one basket.Going multinational(since 1998): with the aim of building an international brand name.Haier’s target for the beginning of the new century is to enter the top 500 list of Fortune magazine. It now produces a wide range of householdelectrical appliances in 86 catalogs and 13000 specifications. Its products are exported to 160 countries. With 8 design centers outside china,13 overseas factories and 12 overseas sales companies with more than 40800 sales outlets. It is striving to become china’s first multinational company.Haier America, founded in 1999, is the U.S. Sales & Marketing division of the international Haier Group, a manufacturer of major appliances and electronics including, but not limited to, refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dishwashers, laundry products, small appliances, electronics, and televisions. B: To see the Terracotta Warriors?
A: Exactly, and the city itself. I want to immerse myself in history —I’m fascinated by the Qin Dynasty, you know.
B: But it will be so crowded!
A: And Jiuzhaigou won’t be?
B: Hmm, maybe, but I expect I’ll be able to get away from the crowds.
A: Well, I hope you have fun. You must show me your photos afterwards.
B: I will. And you’ll have to tell me something about your trip too.
A: I will, have fun.
B: You too.
Task 2:
A: So we’ve decided what places we are going to visit, and now we should decide how we are going to get from one place to another.
B: Well, there’s an excellent public transportation system there, you know. I don’t think we have to worry about that.
A: Public transport? You mean buses and the subway?
B: Of course.
A: Oh, come on! We’re going to be on holiday. We don’t need to waste time on buses and trains. We can travel by taxi.We can get in, tell the driver where we want to go and then sit back and relax in comfort while he or she takes us to the destination.
B: Taxi? Oh no, I’d really rather travel by bus or subway. As you said, we’ll be on holiday so we won’t be in a hurry.
A: But I’d rather spend the time visiting places than being stuck on buses.
B: Look, if we use public transport we’ll be able to meet local people, get a better idea of daily life and so on. That’s what travel really means, you know. Besides, taxis are so expensive.
A: But they’re worth it. They are clean, comfortable and convenient. If you want to make friends with people, you can make friends with the taxi drivers. And they know much more about the city than the commuters, most of them will probably be rushing from one place to another and won’t have time to sit and chat.。
