Chinese Traditions

Nowadays, with the development of cultural exchanges among nations, more and more Chinese are concerned about our own traditions. Different people have different opinions. Some are in favor of the idea that we Chinese should do our utmost to cherish the traditions left by our own ancestors. Others think that we should give it up and try to create new cultures to keep up with the fast pace of the society. As far as I am concerned, I believe that we need to have a correct attitude toward our traditions; that is to say, we Chinese need to retain the advantageous contents of our traditions and spread it constantly, meanwhile we should abandon the unreasonable contents.

The reasons can be listed as follows; first of all, some excellent traditions play an important part in the development of a country. For example, we can easily find some outstanding person who made great contribution to the improvement of education and left many books to us, which they conveyed their unique opinions and special teaching methods. Confucius set a good example for us, as we all know, he came up with the teaching concept “Yin Cai Shi Jiao” and” You Jiao Wu Lei”, both of them are very effective for people. The first one tells us that teachers should find appropriate ways to teach their students individually, while the latter one shows us that every person have an opportunity to receive education, no matter poor or rich. Obviously, these traditional concepts should be applied and spread wide in our life.

On the contrary, we should not hesitate to give up those unreasonable ideals which left bad effects on people’s development. It is known that women were not allowed to receive a good education in China, because there were serious prejudices and discrimination against women in the past . There is no doubt that many women suffered a lot when tried to get rid of the restriction of the traditional ideas. Actually, women play a significant role in modern society. Now many women are going to professions, such as medicine, law and science. They comprise a large part of the workers in offices and factories. In addition, some of them are working up to important positions which used to be held by men. There are even some business which are run completely by women. It is apparent that women are making and outstanding contribution to the progress of modern society. To some degree, we will live a better if women were not discriminated in the past. Therefore ,traditional ideas like these should be abandoned in our life.

To put all into a nutshell, we need to take a positive attitude toward the traditions in China; in other words, a sensible way for us is to cherish the reasonable and outstanding traditions, at the same time ,we need to get rid of the restrictions of the bad traditional ideas. In a word, when we come to realize the importance and make joint effort to respect and apply the reasonable concepts in our daily life, we can build up a brilliant society for every person.
