For our Chinese New Year handwritten report this year, I decided to use some content from the first two units we covered in our English textbook. I thought it would be a fun way to review what we learned and also share some traditions around this important holiday.In Unit 1, we started by learning how to greet each other and introduce ourselves in English. Some of the phrases we practiced were "Hello, I'm..." and "Nice to meet you." We also learned the question "How are you?" and responses like "I'm good, thanks" or "Not bad." These are really useful for starting conversations.Another key part of Unit 1 was learning words for different family members like mom, dad, brother, sister, etc. This ties in well with Chinese New Year since it's such a big family holiday! We get together with grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. It's a special time to catch up.In Unit 2, we moved on to talking about ages and birthdays. We practiced saying "I'm __ years old" and asking "How old are you?" At New Year, it's traditional for kids to get red envelopes with money from their elders. The older you are, the more money you might get! We also learned to say months like January, February and dates like the 1st, 15th, etc. Chinese New Year falls sometime between late January and mid-February based on the lunar calendar.Another important part of Unit 2 was learning words for different hobbies and sports. Some of the ones we covered were reading, swimming, playing soccer/basketball/video games, and more. During the New Year holiday break, we get two whole weeks off from school! That gives us plenty of time to relax and enjoy our hobbies.My personal favorites are reading Chinese myth stories and playing basketball with my cousin Liang. We'll probably get together and play a few games during the holiday. I'll have to be sure to use some English while we play, like "Nice shot!" or "Your turn" or "That was out of bounds."Of course, no Chinese New Year would be complete without the tradition of setting off firecrackers! We learned the word "fireworks" in Unit 2. They are supposed to scare away any evilspirits and bring good luck for the coming year. My grandpa always gets a huge bundle of firecrackers for us to light. It's my job to carefully collect all the red papers after they've gone off.Another New Year tradition is giving treats like candies, chocolates, and cookies. We learned how to say the names of different sweets in English like "chocolate", "candy", and "cookie." Every year, my uncle's family brings boxes of delicious New Year's candies and snacks. My favorite is the boxes with chocolate coins wrapped in red and gold foil. They're supposed to bring prosperity in the coming year.Finally, no Chinese New Year would be complete without the colored red envelopes I mentioned before. We give out red envelopes containing cash to kids, servers at restaurants, and sometimes employees to wish them luck and prosperity. The tradition comes from an ancient myth about a monster that was scared away by the loud sounds of fireworks and the bright red color. Ever since then, red has been considered extremely lucky for New Year.Inside each envelope, you'll find crisp new bills. In English, we can say things like "a 10 bill" or "a 20 bill" followed by the word "note" after the dollar amount like "10 note." Kids always get so excited running around showing off their red envelopesfull of cash! I have to be careful not to lose any of my envelopes or spend the money too quickly though.Well, that's my overview of some key English vocabulary and phrases from Units 1 and 2 that relate to Chinese New Year. I'm really excited about this project because it combines my love for English with traditional Chinese culture and arts.In Unit 1, we learned about introductions, greetings, and talking about our families. I can include a section introducingmyself, my family members, and our hometown. It will be fun to write a dialogue between me and one of my fictional classmates, where we exchange basic greetings and ask each other questions like "What's your name?", "Where are you from?", and "How old are you?". I've practiced these conversations many times, so putting them in my newsletter will help reinforce what I've learned.Another part of Unit 1 covered describing people's appearances and personalities. I could make portraits of my family members and describe them using words like "tall", "short", "friendly", "quiet", etc. Drawing is one of my favorite hobbies, so I'm looking forward to this artistic aspect of the project.Moving on to Unit 2, we studied vocabulary related to sports, hobbies, and the classroom. I'm planning to draw some scenes of myself and my friends playing sports like badminton or basketball. We can include speech bubbles with phrases like "Let's play tennis" and "I'm good at ping-pong." There are so many fun classroom expressions I can incorporate too, such as "May I use the restroom?", "I don't understand", and "Please speak more slowly."One idea I had was to make the newsletter in the form of a comic book, with different panels showing me doing various activities and interacting with friends and teachers. The great thing about comics is that they combine text, images, and dialogue in a really engaging way. As long as I stick to the vocabulary from Units 1 and 2, I can get pretty creative with the storyline and visuals.Of course, no Spring Festival project would be complete without some cultural elements. I'll likely include traditional symbols and decorations like lanterns, firecrackers, the word "fu" (which means good fortune), and maybe even depictions of the mythical beast Nian which the festival is meant to drive away. Adding these touches will give my newsletter an authentic Chinese New Year flavor.An additional challenge will be making sure my handwriting is neat and legible. Our teacher emphasized that this project is meant to celebrate the art of handwriting and calligraphy. I may ask my grandparents for some tips, since their calligraphy skills are excellent. 1994年获清华大学经济管理学院管理信息系统专业工学学士学位，1999年获清华大学经济管理学院数量经济学专业经济学博士学位。

Playfully and with ill-disguised delight, he reveals the murkiest aspects of human existence, almost inadvertently finding images of strong symbolic weight.North-eastern Gaomi county embodies China’s folk tales and history. Few real journeys can surpass these to a realm where the clamour of donkeys and pigs drowns out the voices of the people’s commissars and where both love and evil assume supernatural proportions.Mo Yan’s imagination soars across the entire human existence. He is a wonderful portrayer of nature; he knows virtually all there is to know about hunger, and the brutality of China’s 20th century has probably never been described sonakedly, with heroes, lovers, torturers, bandits – and especially, strong, indomitable mothers. His spice blend is a peppery one. On his broad tapestry of China’s last hundred years, there are neither dancing unicorns nor skipping maidens. But he paints life in a pigsty in such a way that we feel we have been there far too long. Ideologies and reform movements may comeand go but human egoism and greed remain. Heathkit of the Month #25:by Bob Eckweiler, AF6CHeathkit AT-1Introductory CW Ham TransmitterIntroduction:We briefly touched on this Heathkit back when the DX-40 was covered (see the April 2008 RF - HoM #3). However, the AT-1 was the first ham transmitter offered by Heathkit and de-serves an article of its own.Heathkit introduced the AT-1 in 1951 when ham radio was in a simpler time. This coin-cided with the FCC implementing a new ham radio licensing structure which included a new introductory class, the Novice. Novices were allowed privileges in small CW segments of the 80 and 11 meter ham bands. They c ould run up to 75 watts input power but the transmitter had to be crystal controlled. The AT-1 is shown in figure 1 as it appeared in a 1951 Heathkit flyer.The AT-1 o ffered an inexpensive transmitter for the novice that could allow him or her touseadditional features after upgrading to a higher license. The three tube AT-1 ran 35 watts input, CW only with crystal control. The AT-1 did have connections for an external VFO and an AM modulator. Heathkit introduced the VF-1 VFO in 1952, but never offered a modulator, per say. The AT-1 sold for $29.50.Circuit Description:The AT-1 circuit consists of three sections, the power supply, an oscillator - multiplier section and the output amplifier - doubler section; each uses one tube. A schematic of the AT-1 is shown in figure 2.The transformer power supply section uses a 5U4GB rectifier tube in a simple full-wave, ca-pacitor - choke - capacitor circuit. The trans-former provides 860 volts AC center tapped, 5 VAC for the rectifier filament and 6.3 VAC for the other two tube filaments and the accessory socket. Each filter capacitor provides 4 µF by series connected 8 µF capacitors. A pair of se-ries bleeder resistors complete the supply. The standby switch opens the secondary HV center tap lead to remove voltage from the oscillator and amplifier when receiving.The oscillator uses a 6AG7 metal octal pentode as a grid-plate Colpitts crystal oscillator. On 80 meters it runs straight through and on the other bands, depending on the crystal used acts either as a doubler or runs straight through. The output stage does not offer a Pi-network, which is not yet well known; instead it is link coupled and loading for best output re-quires an antenna tuner, such as the AC-1 (see the Feb 2009 RF- HoM #13). Though the ad says 35 watts input, the Heathkit manual more realistically specifies the AT-1's input power at 25 - 30 watts.TVI:Television was finding its way into homes in the early fifties and TVI became a dilemma for many hams. The AT-1 took a series of precau-tions to help prevent TVI. The AC power line leads were bypassed, shielding was used throughout the AT-1a nd the manual included a chapter on TVI including how to build a low pass filter for the transmitter, a high-pass filter for the TV and an RF line filter for the AC line.Controls:The T-1is simple to operate. The front panel is laid out in three rows. The top row just has a basic meter that measures grid or plate current. The second row has the Driver tuning control (0 - 10), the Band Switch (80M - 40M - 20M - 10M)(the 10M position is also used for 11 and 15 meters), and the Output tuning control (0 - 10). The third row has the Crystal socket, power OFF- ON, meter switch marked Cur-rent (Grid - Plate), Plate-on - Standby switch, and a 1/4" Key jack.On the rear, left to right is an octal socket for an external modulator, the power line cord, an SO-239 antenna connector and a second octal socket for an external VFO. The modulator socket requires an external octal plug that shorts pins 3 and 4 for normal operation when no modulator is in use.Conclusion:The Heathkit AT-1 was manufactured through 1956. By then the higher power DX-100 (see the Sept. 2008 RF - HoM #8) had become very popular with advanced hams and bred the DX-20 and DX-35 as replacements for the AT-1. Many new hams, starting as Novices in the early fifties, used the AT-1 as their first trans-mitter. The AT-1 can still be found on eBay. They sell on the average of $100 each in prime shape and a collector grade unit can go for over $300.
