It’s strong medicine, r esearchers are learning. Even the physical act is good for you, says William Fry, professor at Stanford University and pioneer in laughter research. It increases b lood flow and contracts abdominal muscles. But the benefits go beyond a workout. The most ast onishing evidence of laughter’s power comes from a 1997 study of 48 heart-attack patients. Half-watched comedy sh ows for 30 minutes every day; the rest served as controls. After a ye ar, ten patients in the control group had suffered repeat heart attac ks, compared with only two in the group that watched the shows. Can a good laugh help patients get well? In an experiment at the Univ ersity of California at Los Angeles, called Rx Laughter, scientists p lan to test the effect of laughter in children with serious illnesses, including cancer. Early results suggest that funny videos help kids handle uncomfortable or painful procedures.Justin Ybarra, 13, already knows that. He was in considerable pain wh en he woke up from surgery --- until Bill Marx, a volunteer for Rx La ughter, appeared at his bedside. Marx told jokes, made faces and danc ing around the hospital room. “Having something to laugh at took my mind off the pain,” says Justin. “When you’re laughing, you can’t help but feel better.”26. The author implies that ________.A) a good laugh helps one recoverB) funny videos help patients get wellC) children are fond of jokes and funny moviesD) even there’s nothing to laugh at, the act of laughing benefits27. The main idea of the passage is ________.A) researchers are doing experiments on laughterB) laughing is good medicine for the patientsC) patients usually prefer comedies to tragediesD) children all like clowns very muchQuestions 31-35 are based on Passage Two:Under proper conditions, sound waves will be reflected from a hil lside or other such obstruction. Sound travels at the rate of about o ne fifth of a mile per second. If the hill is eleven hundred feet awa y, it takes two seconds for the sound to travel to the hill and back. Thus, by timing the interval between a sound and its reflection (the echo), you can estimate the distance to an obstruction.During World War II the British used a practical application of this principle to detect German planes on their way to bomb London long be fore the enemy was near the target. They used radio waves instead of sound waves, since radio waves can penetrate fog and clouds. The outn umbered Royal Air Force (RAF) always seemed to the puzzled Germans to be lying in wait at the right time and never to be surprised. It was radio echoes more than anything else that won the battle of Britain. Since the radio waves were used to tell the direction in which to send the RAF planes and the distance to send them (Their range of light, in other words), the device was called radio directing and ranging, and from the initials the word radar (雷达) was coined.31. Sound waves reflected from a hill can be used to estimate the ___ _____.A) height of the hill B) speed of soundC) distance to the hill D) intensity of sound32. The estimate is based on the ________.A) direction of the hill B) accepted speed of soundC) interval between sound and echo D) both B and C33. Practical application of this principle resulted in ________.A) new electronic instruments for planesB) a radio directing and ranging deviceC) new radio sets for RAF bomberD) an electronic detecting device34. Radar enabled the English to ________.A) detect German planes on their way to LondonB) direct the outnumbered RAF planes effectivelyC) confuse German bomber pilotD) both A and B35. The British used radio waves because they ________.A) were more exact than sound waves B) could not be detectedC) could penetrate fog and clouds D) were easier to use than sound wavesQuestions 36-40 are based on Passage Three:Some psychologists maintain that mental acts such as thinking are not performed in the brain alone, but that one’s muscles also parti cipate. It may be said that we think with our muscles in somewhat the same way that we listen to music with our bodies. You surely are not surprised to be told that you usually listen to mu sic not only with your ears but with your whole body. Few people can listen to music that is more or less familiar without moving their bo dy or, more specifically, some part of their body. Often when one lis tens to a symphonic (交响乐) concert on the radio, he is tempted to d irect the orchestra even though he knows there is a competent conduct or on the job.Strange as this behavior may be, there is a very good reason for it. One cannot derive all possible enjoyment from music unless he partici pates, so to speak, in its performance. The listener “feels” himsel f into the music with more or less pronounced motions of his body. The muscles of the body actually participate in the mental process ofthinking in the same way, but this participation is less obvious bec ause it is less pronounced.36. Some psychologists maintain that thinking is ________.A) not a mental processB) more of a physical process than a mental actionC) a process that involves our entire bodiesD) a process that involves the muscles as well as the brain37. The process of thinking and that of listening are similar in that ________.A) both are mental actsB) muscles participate in both processesC) both processes are performed by the entire bodyD) we derive equal enjoyment from them38. The pronounced body motions are a listener’s way of ________.A) “feeling” the musicB) participating in the performanceC) deriving enjoyment from the musicD) all of the above39. Body movements are necessary in order for the listener to _______ _.A) hear the music B) appreciate the musicC) enjoy the music fully D) completely understand the music40. According to selection, muscle participation in the process of th inking is ________.A) deliberate B) obvious C) not readily apparent D) very pronounced Questions 41-45 are based on Passage Four:Chess must be one of the oldest games in the world. An Arab trave ler in India in the year 900 wrote that it was played “long, long ag o”. Chess was probably invented in India, and it has been played eve rywhere from Japan to Europe since 1400. The name “chess” is intere sting. When one player is attacking the other’s king, he says, in En glish, “check”. When the king has been caught and cannot move anywh ere, he says “check mate”. These words come from Persian. “Shah ma t” means “the king is dead”. That is when the game is over, and on e player has won.Such an old game changes very slowly. The rules have not always been the same as they are now. For example, at one time the queen could on ly move one square at a time. Now she is the strongest piece on the b oard. It would be interesting to know why this has happened! Chess ta kes time and thought, but it is a game for all kinds of people. You d on’t have to be a champion in order to enjoy it. It is not always played by two people sitting at the same table. The first time the Amer icans beat the Russians was in a match played by radio. Some of the c hess masters are able to play many people at the same time. The recor d was when one man played 400 games! It is said that some people play chess by post. This must make chess the slowest game in the world.41. Which of the following is known to be TRUE?A) Chess is an old Indian traveling game.B) Chess is the oldest game in the world.C) Chess was played in Japan and Europe before 1400.D) Chess was played in India long before 900.42.

On the other Imnd, application for business programs, engineering and conqmter science is way up.Tlmt is no surprise, either. A friend of mine (a sales girl for a chemical conqiany) was nuking twice the salary of her college instructors her first year on the job — even before she con^leted her two-year degree. To tell the truth, I'm proud of the young lady. But why cant we Mve it both wa齐?Cant we educate people for life as well as a profession? While it is true tlmt we all need a profession, it is equally true tlmt our society Ms gathered a great amount of knowledge in fields fer remote from our own and that we are better for our understanding of these other contributions — both scientific and artistic. It is equally true that, in studying the different wisdom of others, we learn how to think. More inq)ortant, peihaps, education teaches us to see the connections between things as well as see beyond our immedrate needs.I think Oscar Wide Md it right when he said that we ought to give our ability to our work but our genius to our lives.Lefs hope tlmt our educators answer the students' cries for profession education, but at the same time let's n^ke sure that the students are prepared for the day when they realize their mistake. Let us look briefly at the history of nmchines and their use in Victories. Before the year 1750 practically everything was made by craftsmen using hand tools. By 1800, some machines were in use and were driven by steam engines. After this, nmchines were steadily inqiroved and Victories sprang up all over England to n^ke the great variety of goods that are now available to us. However; all these 皿chines were for spec谊1 purposes. There were nmchines for unking cloth,皿chines for nuking shoes and 皿chines for canning food. An improvement in food canning methods, for e)mnq)le, did not affect the Victories producing the other things. The great difference in the case of the con^iuter is tlmt as it is concerned with the office work, it affects every conq)an^ no nMitter wlmt it nmkes. This is why the introduction of conqmters is called the Con^uter Revolution. If conqmters can do the office work so well, does it mean that the clerks will all lose their jobs? In fiiture there will be fiir fewer jobs for clerks, as such, but this does not mean tlmt nmny cleiks will be dismissed from their jobs. There are three reasons for this. The first is that a large amount of clerical work is done by women. There are either girls who will probably marry or else married women who came back to work for a few years. Women are constant以leaving the conq)an^ and in norn^il conditions, replacements would Mve to be found. When the conqiuter is brought into the office, it merely means tlmt fewer new girls need be taken on. The second reason is tlmt the conqianies which buy conqiuters will probable be e?q)andmg, so the clerks can be moved to fill new vacancies. The third reason is tlmt a hrge number of jobs will become available in connection with the conqiuters, and clerks are suitable for nmny of them.Once the conqmter is accepted as a nomml part ofthe conqiany's organization, there will be many clrnnges. The activities ofthe conq)any will be arranged so that all the details are sent directly to the conqmter. In this wa» the conqmter will contain up-to-date knowledge ofthe conqiany's a 鱼irs and this knowledge will be available to the nmnagers at any time, merely by nuking the conqmter print out the required infom^ition. Many of the conqiany's records, which are now kept in filing cabinets, will in fiiture be kept on reels of nmgnetic tape. It is in these cringes within the conqiany's organization that the conqiuter will cause a revolution. All the indications are tlmt conqiuters will not cause very much unemployment.71.The expression "practically everything" in Line 2 of Paragraph 1 means .A. absolutely everythingB. almost everythingC.hardly anythingD. almost nothing72.According to the writer there was a rapid increase in the use of nmchinesA. before 1750B. in 1800C.between 1750 and 1800D. after 180073.The nmin idea ofthe first paragraph is that .A.皿chines came into general use after 1800B.there was an inqjrovement in fbod-catming methods after 1800C.皿chines in general inqiroved during the nineteenth centuryD.unlike in軍rovements in nmchiner* the introduction of the conqmter willaffect every conqiany74.In the writer's opinion, the introduction of computers will mean tlmt .A.there will be more clerical jobsB.there will be fewer clerical jobsC.nMiny clerks will lose their jobsD.the total number ofjobs will be increased75.The writer says the biggest dmnge produced by the introduction of conqmters willbe tlmt .A.conq)anies will increasingly dismiss their workersB.conq)anies will become snmllerC.conq)anies will be expanded day after dayD.the up-to-date knowledge will be available to nmnagersV lyanslatlon (15%)Directions: Translate the following sentences from Chinese into English or vice versa vrith the possible words or phrases given in the bracket (one point for each o/- the Chmese-English translation and 10 points for English- Chinese translation). 76.

T ext 5 (19期text 10)V enice is built on 170 small islands, holds 150 small rivers, and is connected by 409 bridges, of which only three cross the main rivers. Although the city looks small, it is the most beautiful city in the world. The islands of the V enetian were first settled during the 5th and 6th centuries AD, when the people of the mainland looked for a hiding place and came there. People built the now-famous watery villages on wooden boats into the mud. There were about 63, 000 people then. The most pleasant time of year to visit it is late March into May, with clear spring days and fewer crowds. September is the next best, but October is quieter. Flooding happens in November and December, and winter can be unpleasantly cold. Traveling by boat is the best way of getting around V enice, and you also can walk in the small street as you like. The buildings in V enice are slowly sinking into the wet ground. It is believed that if rebuilding work does not continue, these buildings may sink in turn. It has been said that “When this good place sinks, the world will be poorer”. But the city is more beautiful today, and is liked by people from all over the world.第二节获取信息(共5个小题;每小题1分,满分5分)听下面一段独白,请根据题目要求,从听到的内容中获取必要的信息,填入标号为16—20的空格中。

T ext 6 (20期text 10)When people talk about America’s best universities, Y ale University is the second one named after Harvard. However, it started in 1701, sixty-five years after Harvard. It was named after Elihu Y ale, a wealthy British trader. Y ale is in the state of Connecticut, a small state south of Massachusetts. The university is in the city of New Haven, the largest city in southern Connecticut. Y ale is famous for being the first university to award the Doctor of Philosophy or Ph. D. degree. Though the title suggests a degree in philosophy, it really means a student can get a degree in many different fields.Y ale has divided all its lessons into different units. Undergraduate degrees can be from Y ale College and graduate degrees can be from the Graduate School. Students desiring specialization can receive instruction from the School of Art, the School of Architecture, and the School of Medicine.Y ale has a special interest in finding the poor student who has good grades but little money for the schooling. If Y ale believes that student shows much promise, money will be available through their scholarship program. This is a fine example that Y ale wants all students to have the chance for a university education no matter whether they come from a poor family.Key: 1—5 BBCBC 6—10 CACCC 11—15 ABBAB 16—20。
