Create a Material Width Line for a 0° Ply
©2008 Confidential
Run Net Producibility for P001 FiberSIM will return a message Material Width Exceeded, hit “OK” Preview the Material Width Line by pressing the “Preview” button in the Ply form Type in “6” in the Material Width Offset entry box Click the “Generate Material Width Lines” button FiberSIM will generate CATIA geometry in the CAD Spec. Tree The curves will be located under a geometric set called “FiberSIM Material Width Lines” and will be named appropriately along with the offset information

Overlap Based On – Specifies whether the Overlap Distance is based on a Distance or Material Thickness
Splice Group Parameters (cont’d)

Offset Direction – Specifies the direction that FiberSIM will offset the Splice Curves
− The Offset Direction point must be in between the first splice curve and the Net Boundary
− If No is selected FiberSIM will create a butt type splice − If Yes is selected FiberSIM will create and overlap type splice.
Splice Group Parameters (cont’d)
What are Splice Groups?
©2008 Confidential
Splice Groups are usually created based on the Ply orientations FiberSIM will automatically create all of the offset curves necessary based on the number of Layers associated to the Splice Group Splice Groups utilize Offset Specifications to drive the offset distance of the Splice curves Among the options are the capabilities to define butt, overlap, or butt-overlap splices Splice Groups are applied at the Layer level but splice only Plies Original, un-spliced Layer information and Layer boundaries are retained

Executing the Generate Layer Parent utility parents ACEE Layers to the previously created Plies Any changes made to the Layers will update the Plies Plies can be deleted and re-created if the splicing strategy changes significantly The Plies are now linked to the Layers and are unlinked from the original geometry

Observe that all the plies now have a Layer Parent instead of the Laminate After the Layers are generated the subordinate plies’ parameters can only be changed via their associated layer
− The Orientation specified in the Splice Group should match the Orientation of the Layers that the Splice Group is applied to − Although FiberSIM will present a warning message, users are not prevented from applying a Splice Group to Layers of conflicting Orientations
Create a Splice Group to Butt-Splice 0º Plies
In the Application Tree, click on the Splice Group object (under Layer Management) and right click to Create New Name the object Splice Group 0 Set the Pull down in the Orientation area to 0 Select the 0º Material Width curve created by FiberSIM The Offset direction should be indicated in front (to the Left) of the splice curve chosen StaggerProfile_Splice should be chosen for the Stagger Profile OffsetSpecification_Splice 1.0 (25.4mm) should be chosen for the Offset Specification Select OK to save

The purpose of this model is to demonstrate how to automate splicing and darting of plies using the ACEE splice and dart group features on a ply-based design
Exercise Overview

Generate Layer Parents from Plies to enable the use of ACEE functionality Create a Splice group using a material width line, apply it to the four 0º layers, then generate four butt-spliced plies Create overlap spliced plies for the 45º layers and define a overlap region under the core to create four butt-overlap spliced plies Create one of four Dart groups using pre-created darts and apply them to the 90º layers
Generate Layer Parents for Plies

Generating Layer Parents for Plies will enable users to take advantage of ACEE functionality on a ply-based design Select and modify the Shroud Laminate On the Advanced tab press “Generate Layer Parents for Plies”
Splice Curves – Specifies the Splice Curves that will be used for the Splice Group
− User must select the Splice Curves in the exact order in which the Plies are going to be spliced. − The Splice Curves must be on the Laminate surface, and must break against the Laminate Net Boundary
