Betrayal:
Willy’s primary obsession throughout the play is what he considers to be Biff’s betrayal of his ambitions for him. Willy believes that he has every right to expect Biff to fulfill the promise inherent in him. When Biff walks out on Willy’s ambitions for him, Willy takes this rejection as a personal affront. Willy assumes that Biff’s betrayal stems from Biff’s discovery of Willy’s affair with The Woman—a betrayal of Linda’s love. Whereas Willy feels that Biff has betrayed him, Biff feels that Willy, a “phony little fake,” has betrayed him with his unending stream of ego-stroking lies.
Death of a Salesman
Death of a Salesman, deemed as vintage Miller, received an immediate success after its premiere in 1949.The play presents the individual agonizing sufferings related to his family and modern American society ethics and values at large. The play examines the living plight of common Americans in modern society.
Arthur Miller (1915-2005) is universally recognized as one of the greatest dramatists of the 20th century.Miller's father had moved to the USA from Austria Hungary, drawn like so many others by the "GreatAmerican Dream". However, he experienced severe financial hardship when his family business was ruinedin the Great Depression of the early l930s.Millers's most famous play, Death of a Salesman, is a powerful attack on the American system, with itsaggressive way of doing business and its insistence on money and social status as indicators of worth. "eopleshould not be discouraged from losing weight," Dr Flint said. However, he added, they should make sure thatany weight loss plan includes adequate amounts of fiber and a high protein intake over months to years mighthave ill effects on the colon. The findings are based on 17 overweight men who followed three short-term diets: a one-week menu planto keep their weight; a four-week high-protein diet with reasonable amounts of carbohydrates; and a four-weekhigh-protein diet low in carbs. On average, the study found when the men were on the high-protein diets, they had higher levels ofsubstances known as N-nitroso compounds (亚硝基化合物) and other metabolites (代谢物) that have beenlinked to cancer. And when they were on the high-protein, low-carb diet, they had lowered amounts of fiber-originated compounds thought to be protective against cancer.Exactly what those changes might mean for a person's health is not clear. But Flint said that the findingssuggest that people should be cautious about consuming too much protein and too little fiber over a long period. In general, experts recommend that adults get about 28 grams of fiber per day-though it's not known whetherthat's enough for someone on a high-protein weight-loss diet.1. Humiliation is the greatest fear; self-exposure and failing to appeal to the audience come a close second. Women hate it most, since girls are pressurized from an early age to be concerned with appearances of all kinds. Most people have plenty of insecurities, and this seems like a situation that will bring them out. If you were under pressure to be perfect, you are terrified of falling in the most public of ways. While extroverts will feel less fear before the ordeal, it does not mean they will necessarily do it better. Some very shy people manage to shine. When I met the British comedian Julian Clary, he was shy and cautious, yet his TV performances are perfect. In fact, personality is not the best predictor of who does it well. Regardless of what you are like in real life, the key seems to be to act yourself. Actual acting, as in performing the scriipted lines of a character other than yourself, does not do the job. While politicians may limit damage by having carefully rehearsed, written scriipts to speak from, there is always a hidden awareness among the audience that the words might not betrue. Likewise, the incredibly perfect speeches of many American academics are far from natural. You may end up buying their book on the way out, but soon afterwards, it is much like fast food, and you get a nameless sense that you’ve been cheated. Although, as Earl Spencer proved at his sister Princess Diana’s funeral, it is possible both to prepare every word and to act naturally. A scriipt rarely works and it is used to help most speakers. But, being yourself doesn’t work either. If you spoke as if you were in your own kitchen, it would be too authentic, too unaware of the need to communicate with an audience. I remember going to see British psychiatrist R. D. Laing speak in public. He behaved like a seriously odd person, talking off the top of his head. Although he was talking about madness and he wrote on mental illness, he seemed to be exhibiting rather than explaining it. The best psychological place from which to speak is an unselfconscious self-consciousness, providing the illusion of being natural. Studies suggest that this state of "flow", as psychologists call it, is very satisfying.1. Women hate public speaking most mainly because of _____.A. their upbringing very early on.B. their inability to appeal to the audience.C. their sense of greater public pressure.D. their sense of greater humiliation.2. "this" in Paragraph Two refers toA. insecurity.B. sense of failure.C. public speaking.D. pressure.3. Which of the following is NOT the author’s viewpoint?A. Acting like performers spoils the message in a speech.B. Perfection of scriipts is necessary in making good impressions.C. Acting naturally means less dependence on the prepared scriipt.D. There should be a balance between actual acting and acting naturally.4. What is the author’s view on personality?A. Personality is the key to success in public speaking.B. Extroverts are better public speakers.C. Introverts have to learn harder to be good speakers.D. Factors other than personality ensure better performance.5. The author implies that while speaking R. D. Laing _____.A. was both too casual and authentic.B. was acting like a performer.C. was keeping a good balance.D. was aware of his audience.6. In the last paragraph the author recommends that ____.A. you forget about your nervousness.B. you feel natural and speak naturally.C. you may feel nervous, but appear naturally.D. you may imagine yourself to be natural.
Mrs. Miller - A Remarkable WomanMrs. Miller is a woman who stands out in my memory, not just because of her title but because of her character and the impact she made on my life. She was my third-grade teacher, but she was much more than just an educator; she was a mentor, a friend, and a role model.Mrs. Miller had a way of making learning fun and engaging. Her classroom was always lively with the sound of laughter and excited discussion. She made complex subjects simple to understand and encouraged us to think outside the box. She never treated us like children; she saw us as intelligent, capable individuals with the potential to achieve great things.Beyond the classroom, Mrs. Miller was a compassionate and understanding person. She always had a kind word to offer when someone was feeling down or needed encouragement. She listened patiently to our problems and offered wise advice that we could apply not just in school but in life. What truly set Mrs. Miller apart was her unwavering belief in us. She never doubted our abilities or潜力, even when we ourselves did. She pushed us to excel, not just academically but also in character. She taught us the importance of hard work, perseverance, and kindness, lessons that have stayed with me well into adulthood.Looking back, I am grateful for the time I spent in Mrs. Miller's classroom. She not only taught me math and science, but she also taught me about life and the value of hard work. She showed me that with dedication and perseverance, anything is possible. Mrs. Miller is not just a teacher; she is a beacon of inspiration and a true role model.
