children starting primary school in the UK are overweight.By the time they leave school, that figure will rise to one in three. The chance of them being overweight in adulthood, which brings range of associated health risks,is high,at 50%-75%.The root cause of diet-related fatness is no secret:an energy imbalance between the quantity of food being consumed and the level of physical activity being conducted.Addressing this imbalance needs to be,in part,a review of our diet.More fresh ingredients(原料) especially fruit and vegetables, less processed foods and fewer additives(添加剂) are all important factors in building a balanced diet. The Department of Health has recognized that a collective approach, rather than just individual behavior change,is asuccessful way of achieving this.Universal adjustments like a blanket decrease in sugar content influence the way we eat through the choices available to us.Applying this approach to school kitchens makes sense. They have an important role to play in maintaining healthy diets.Offering a school menu packed with fresh ingredients and without artificial additives makes a direct and effective impact on what children eat at school. It’s an area the Soil Association consistently works to handle through its Food for Life program—working with schools to transform food culture, improve food education and encourage lasting changes to the way schools think about food.It works. In Food for Life schools, pupils are a third less likely to eat no fruit or vegetables than those in comparison schools. One way for schools to get involved is a Food for Life Served Here award, which means at least 75% of dishes are prepared on site using fresh ingredients. It encourages local seasonal produce and,at silver or gold level, requires a commitment toenvironmentally friendly produce. At its heart, the award is designed to support health and enhance food understanding.Over 50% of English primary schools have such anaward, already—serving around 1.7 million meals each day to over 10,000 schools and it’s a figure we’ll see grow.4.What does the under lined word “Addressing” in Paragraph 2 to operate.C.It’s a temporary project.D.It’s a fruitful attempt.7.Which type of food may the Food for Life Served Here award promote?A.Sugary snacks.B.First-class sausages.C.High-quality imported beef.D.Freshly picked organic beans.CA new study, published in TheJournalofEmunication interactions that included voice, like a phone call or video chat, created stronger social bonds than communication through typing, like teail. In the study, researchers used various experiments to gauge(评估;判断) connectedness. In one, they asked 200 people to make predictions about what it would be like to reconnect with an old friend by email or by phone and then assigned people at random to do one or the other.Although people anticipated that a phone call would be more awkward, hearing someone’s voice actually made the experience better. However, people who participated in the e asignificantly stronger bond with their old friend on the phone versus email, and they did not feel more awkward. In another experiment, the researchers had strangers connected by either texting, talking over video chat,or talking using only audio. They found that both forms of voice communication—whether video or audio only—made the strangers feel significantly more connected than when they communicated via teanoff,a Harvard trained clinical psychologist based in New York City, says people tend to teail instead of calling because of convenience,as they see it as a controlled form of communication where they can “correspond information exactly in the way they intend without unexpected additions by the other person.”Romanoff says that in reality, teake it hard to determine the true meaning behind a conversation.A phone call is actually more convenient when considering the net effects of the message. Each party is more present, and therefore, able to gauge the meaning behind the content without ruminating on the endless possible meanings behind words and punctuation.8.What is the purpose of the study?A.To encourage people to let their fingers do the talking.B.To introduce the effects of verbal and non-verbal communications.C.To demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses of making phone calls.D.To compare connectedness of communication through voice and typing.9.Which way will make you feel more connected if you miss a friend far away?A.Typing a letter.B.Sending an email.C.Having a video chat.D.Teessage.10.What does “a controlled form of communication” refer to in Paragraph 4?A.A way to talk about controlled topics.B.A way to communicate without time limit.C.A way to eething without delay.D.A way to express thoughts without being disturbed.11.What advantage does making phone calls have over teore formal.B.Being less awkward.C.Being more straightforward.D.Being less expensive.DTechnology is supposed to make our lives easier, allowing us to do things more quickly and efficiently. But too often it seems to make things harder. This increase in complexity, often called “feature creep”,costs consumers’ time, but it also costs business money.Product returns in the U.S.cost a hundred billion dollars a year, and a recent study by Elke den Ouden,of Philips Electronics, found that at least half of returned products have nothing wrong with them.Consumers just couldn’t figure out how to use panies now know a great deal about problems of usability and consumer behavior,so why is it that feature creep proves unstoppable? In part, feature creep is the product of the so-called internal-audience problem:the people who design and sell productsare not the ones who buy and use them, and what engineers and marketers think is important is not necessarily what’s best for consumers. The engineers tend not to notice when more options make a product less usable. And marketing and sales departments see each additional feature as a new selling point, and a new way to attract customers. You might think, then, that companies could avoid feature creep by just paying attention to what customers really want. But that’s where the trouble begins, because although consumers find overloaded gadgets(配件)unmanageable, they also find them attractive. It turns out that when we look at a new product in a store we tend to think that the more features there are,the better. It is only once we get the product home and try to use it that we realize the virtues of simplicity. It seems strange that we don’t expect feature tiredne ss and thus avoid it.But,as numerous studies have shown, people are not,in general, good at predicting what will make them happy in the future. As a result,we will pay more for more features because wesystematically overestimate how often we’ll use them.We a lso overestimate our ability to figure out how a complicated product works. The fact that buyers want bells and whistles but users want something clear and simple creates an unusual problem for companies.A product that doesn’t have enough features may fail to catch our eye in the store. But a product with too many features is likely to annoy consumers.12.What does the first paragraph mainly discuss?A.The benefits brought by the advanced technology.B.The recent study conducted by Elke den Ouden.C.The loss caused by the feature creep of technology.D.Many problems of usability known by the consumers.13.Which of the following is true according to the second paragraph?A.It is the audience problem that leads to feature creep.B.What matters to designers and marketers is not good for consumers.C.Feature creep brings blessings to the people in marketing and sales.D.The engineers will not pay attention to the quality of the product.14.What do we know about the buyers in Paragraph 4?A.They are deeply convinced that all the products work in a simple way.B.They are fed up with the more and more features of the products.C.They are too confident of their ability to use the complicated products.D.They are quite clear about the products which will make them happy.15.What can be a suitable title for the text?A.Saying No to Feature Creep Is No Easy ThingB.Feature-heavy Products in DemandC.The More Features, the BetterD.Simplicity Outweighs Complemer, many areas of the US have been suffering historic droughts (干旱).Climate change has brought very high temperatures and less-than-normal rain and snow to the country.1 .It also means hot weather, which can be hard to take.2 .Their civilization once thrived (繁荣) with its amazing architecture of pyramids and cities. One of the cities,Tikal, was built in what is now Guatemala.“It was quite a remarkable place, with temples towering above the top of the rainforest,” says Dunning.Although the region is a tropical rainforest,Tikal was built in a place that got little rain for half the year.Additionally,it had no year-round lakes or rivers—although it did have an important spring. The Maya also did not have a system to reach groundwater.3 .“As Tikal grew, people there would have had to cut down parts of the surrounding rainforest to raise food. 4 to meet their needs for wood and other resources,” Dunning says.Dunning compares it to today’s practice of chopping down much larger parts of the Amazon rainforest to raise cattle for beef.He calls this deed “bad for the health of local environment and the global environment, too.”The Maya would have used cut-and-burn techniques and let the forest grow back after a few years.Although they changed the environment with their farming and other practices, the Maya had much less impact on the climate than we do now.The Maya understood that they had to have balance.5 .You’ll pay a price,or someone will.A.If you abuse the world,it’s going to come backB.At the same time, they left enough of it in placeC.So they built tanks to collect and store rainwaterD.They would have served different, important purposesE.That means there is less water to drink and less water for cropsF.Tikal was home to tens of thousands of people during the Slowly, as she worked on the long list, she began to feel uncertain. She began to question some of her decisions. Had she used the best technique in that case? Maybe, in this case, she should have run one more test before operating? On the other hand, maybe she should have … Would the doctors on th e selection committee understand that, as the only trained surgeon in the area, she usually could not get advice from others and therefore, had to rely completely on her own judgment? For the first time, Dr. Ginoux felt lonely and isolated. The longer Dr. Ginoux worked on the application forms, the more depressed she became. People unconsciously expect others to use the same modes of expression as they do. But this may lead to mistakes. For instance, not all languages use silence and interruptions in the same way. Have you observed the ways people from different cultures use silence? Have you noticed that some people interrupt conversations more than other people? All cultures do not have the same rules governing these areas of communication. Many Americans interrupt silence in a conversation to mean disapproval, disagreement, or unsuccessful communication. They often try to fill silence by saying something even if they have nothing to say! On the other hand, Americans do not appreciate a person who dominates a conversation. Knowing when to take turns in conversation in another language can sometimes cause difficulty. Should you wait until someone has finished a sentence before contributing to a discussion, or can you break into the middle of someone's sentence? Interrupting someone who is speaking is considered rude in the United States. Even children are taught explicitly not to interrupt.Individuals in every culture have similar basic needs but express them differently. In daily life we all initiate conversation, use formal and informal speech, give praise, express disagreement, seek information, and extend invitations. Some of the verbal patterns we use are influenced by our culture. Whereas directness in speech is common in the United States, indirectness is the rule in parts of the Far East. Thus people from both of theseparts of the world would probably express criticism of others differently. In parts of the Middle East a host is expected to offer food several times but in the United States he may make an offer only once or twice. The different modes of expression represent variations on the same theme. Each language reflects and creates cultural attitudes; each has a unique way of expressing human need.6. The main idea of the passage is that ______.A. invitations may not always be genuineB. it is not polite to interrupt a conversationC. there are unwritten and tacit rules of speaking that affect verbal interactionD. directness is characteristic of American verbal interaction7. People sometimes make mistakes in communication because ______.A. they do not listen to othersB. they expect others to be like themC. they tend to be self-centeredD. they are not considerate8. The author implies that silence in conversation ______.A. always means disapproval and disagreement in the American cultureB. means unsuccessful communication in all culturesC. is interrupted in the same way in both the East and the WestD. often makes Americans feel uncomfortable during conversation9. Which statement of the difference between the American culture and the culture of parts of East Asia is NOT true?A. The American people tend to be more direct in their speech than those in the FarEast.B. The Americans use more informal speech than the East Asian people.C. People from the two different cultures might express criticism differently.D. A Middle East host might offer food several times to his gusts, whereas an Americanhost would only offer once or twice.10. The last paragraph states that people from various cultures ______.A.share common needs but express them differentlyB. share common needs so they express them similarlyC. express their uncommon needs in similar waysD. share no common needs and therefore have no similar expressionPassage 3Botany, the study of plants, occupies a peculiar position in the history of human knowledge. For many thousands of years it was the one field of awareness about which humans had anything more than the vaguest of insights. It is impossible to know today just what our Stone Age ancestors knew about plants, but from what we can observe of preindustrial societies that still exist; a detailed learning of plants and their properties must be extremely ancient. This is logical. Plants are the basis of the food pyramid for all living things, even of other plants. They have always been enormously important to the welfare of peoples, not only for food, but also for clothing, weapons, tools, dyes, medicines, shelter, and a great many other purpose. Tribes living today in the jungles of the Amazon recognize liberally hundreds of plants and know many properties of each. To them botany, as such, has no name and is probably not even recognized as a special branch of "knowledge" at all.Unfortunately, the more Industrialized we become the farther away we more from direct contact with plants, and the less distinct our knowledge of botany grows. Y et everyone comes unconsciously on an amazing amount of botanical knowledge, and few people will fail to recognize a rose, an apple, or an orchid. When our Neolithic ancestors, living in the Middle East about 10, 000 years ago, discovered that certain grasses could be harvested and their seeds planted for richer yields the next season, the first great step in a new association of plants and humans was taken. Grains were discovered and from them flowed the marvel of agriculture: cultivated crops. From then on, humans would increasingly take their living from the controlled production of a few plants, rather than getting a little here and a little there from many varieties that grew wild - and the accumulated knowledge of tens of thousands of years of experience and intimacy with plants in the wild world would begin to fade away.11. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?A. The early humans did not enjoy the study of botany.B. They thought there were no needs to cultivate crops.C. They probably had extensive knowledge of plants.D. They placed great importance on the ownership of property.12. What does the comment "this is logical" mean?A. It is reasonable to assume that our ancestors behaved very much like people inpreindustrial societies.B. Human knowledge of plants is well organized and detailed.C. There is no clear way to determine the extent of our ancestor's knowledge of plants.D. It is not surprising that early humans had a detailed knowledge of plants13. According to the passage, why has the accumulated knowledge of botany begun tofade away?A. People no longer valued plants as a useful resource.B. Direct contact with a variety of plants has decreased.C. Many wild plants changed their properties somehow and invalidated humanknowledge.D. Research is unable to keep up with the increasing numbers of plants.14. According to the passage, what was the first great step toward the practice of agriculture?A. The discovery of grasses that could be harvested and replanted.B. The changing diets of early humans.C. The development of a system of names fro plants.D. The invention of agricultural implements and machinery.15. The relationship between botany and agriculture is similar to the relationship between zoology (the study of animals) and ______.A. sheep raisingB. deer huntingC. bird watchingD. horsebackIII. Exercises I for STT
(1) Oil DrillingMany years ago, when most people got their water direct from wells, they were sometimes annoyed by a viscous, dark liquid which came out of the ground and contaminated the water. It smelt bad and was extremely dirty. Most people thought it was a nuisance. Today we have a rather different opinion about this substance known as crude oil. Most scientists believe that crude oil is formed by the decomposed remains of billions of tiny plants and animals which lived in the sea millions or hundreds of millions of years ago. When these organisms died, they decayed and over millions of years layers of slime formed on the ocean bed; with the pressure of movements in the earth’s crust and the heat this pressure caused, these layers were converted into petroleum. Only 120 years ago, nobody would have wasted his time trying to dig it out. Now, 120 years later, this list of crude oil fractions (things which make up the mixture called crude oil) and by-products is nearly endless: petrol for cars, diesel oil for trains, buses and lorries, aviation fuels, lubricating oils for all engines, heavy oils for power stations and ships, asphalt for roads, petrochemicals for plastics, synthetic fibres and even for synthetic food products, etc. Today, a word without petroleum products is almost unimaginable. It may seem an easy job to drill holes in the land areas of the earth, but even an exploratory well may be over 3000 metres deep. The drillers may have to drill through very hard rock, and when they have drilled part of the well, they will probably have to take all the drill pipe out to change the drilling bit at the lower end. It is the pit which eats through the rock and, although it is very sharp and has 132 cutting edges, it quickly wears out. Then, after drilling 3000 meters, they may find nothing. Or, if they strike oil, it may gush out so powerfully that workers are injured and equipment damaged. A spark might ignite the oil vapour and causes a fire which would burn so fiercely that it could only be extinguished by explosives. In the past, such accidents were frequent, but techniques have been developed to help avoid them.Every person in industrialized societies depends on crude oil. Its fractions provide fuel for electricity generators, power his transport, probably heat his home, may help clothe him and in the future, feed him. The question is: how long will the world’s reserves of crude oil last?。

2023版新教材高考英语一轮总复习Unit2单元主题训练新人教版选择性必修第三册(含答案)
新教材高考英语一轮总复习:UNIT 2 单元主题训练Ⅰ.阅读理解When you think of boxing, you may picture greats like former world heavyweight boxing champions Rocky Marciano and Jersey Joe Walcott. But boxing isn't just a sport anymore. It's also a popular way to stay fit, through a version known as fitness boxing, which has adapted the movements of the sport into exercise routines.Unlike traditional boxing that requires someone else for practice, fitness boxing involves throwing punches (重拳击打) at the air or at a punching bag, usually in a class. There are two main types of these exercise classes. In one, you follow a leader and do a series of boxing moves to music, similar to an aerobics (有氧运动) class. The moves include a combination of large, sweeping punches; smaller punches; and short, quick steps forward and back. The other type of exercise class involves strength training, stretching, and hitting a punching bag.“This kind of boxing has many health benefits, because it constantly requires you to think and change your position,” says physical therapist Linda Arslanian. Though there's no proof that fitness boxing is superior to any other types of exercise, it does strengthen bones and muscles, burn more calories, improve balance and even lift your mood. However, fitness_boxing_may_not_be_right_up_your_street. “I'd say you'd have to be very careful if you have hand problems. In that case, you should consider shadow boxing only, and make sure your hands don't make contact with a target,” says Arslanian. With any activity that is potentially aerobic, you should check with your physician before starting.“If you're interested in trying this exercise to change up your routine, you'll likely find classes at health clubs or community centres. And if you do start a class, remember to take it slowly. Also, it's not about high intensity. It's about consistency,” she adds.语篇解读:文章主要介绍了健身拳击的类型、好处及注意事项。

Robots for Tomorrow
Besides the decrease in price and increase in number, robots will also grow in sophistication. As memory chips become smaller and microprocessors become more advanced, the abilities of the robot will grow in number and usefulness, with more features appearing over the next few years, such as:
V oice recognition: the ability to detect words or phrases on which the robot may act. For instance, if you told your robot equipped with voice recognition “Get the newspaper” “Serve the drinks” or practically any other phrase, the robot could recognize it and follow your command.
Advanced robotic arms: more advanced arms will become standard on most personal robots within the next decade. These arms, capable of more intricate movements and perhaps capable of “feeling” an object could make robots far more useful, since arms are probably their most vital working part.
Shape recognition: when robots can recognize shape, they will be able to pick out a single object from a group or identify any object. For example, if a bowl were filled with many different kinds of fruit, you could tell the robot, “get me an orange”, and using its shape recognizing “eyes” it could travel to the fruit bowl and pick out an orange from the rest of the fruit. Of course, there are more applications for shape recognition, such as assembling pieces of an object or picking out a particular person among many by identifying the height, size, and build of an individual.
These and many other new features will be introduced in robots and robots as they continue to evolve. We have seen the many uses for the robots of today, so the number of use for those of tomorrow seems almost too incredible to believe.
Robots will not only help us on this world, but will also help us explore other worlds. In fact, space exploration is one of the most promising uses for robots, since these machines are not so susceptible to the elements that could hurt or kill people. Robots can withstand radiation, heat, cold and can function without an atmosphere. Also, robots have a much longer life span, so voyages to other solar systems would be possible. Robots could communicate with us, and if something went wrong and destroyed the space vehicle, a machine would be lost, not a human .。
