Pruning involves the cutting away of overgrown and unwanted branches , and the inexperienced gardener can be encouraged by the thought that more damage results from doing it unnecessarily than from leaving the tree to grow in its own way .First , pruning may be done to make sure that trees have desired shape or size . The object may be to get a tree of the right height , and at the same time to help the growth of small side branches , which will thicken its appearance or give it a special shape . Secondly , pruning may be done to make the tree healthier . You may cut out diseased or dead wood , or branches that are rubbing against each other and thus cause wounds . The health of a tree may be encouraged by removing branches that are blocking up the center and so preventing the free movement of air .One result of pruning is that an open wound is left on the tree and this provides an easy entry for disease , but it is a wound that will heal (愈合) . Often there is a race between the healing and the disease as to whether the tree will live or die , so that there is a period when the tree is at risk . It should be the aim of every gardener to reduce that risk of death as far as possible . It is important to make the area , which has been pruned , smooth and clan , for healing will be slowed down by roughness . You should allow the cut surface to dry for a few hours and then paint it with one of the materials available from garden shops produced especially for this purpose . Pruning is usually done in winter , for then you can see the shape of the tree clearly without interference (妨碍) from the leaves and also it is very unlikely that the cuts you make will bleed . If this does happen , it is , of course , impossible to paint them properly .26.Why should running be done ?A.To make the tree grow taller . B.To improve the shape of the tree .C.to get rid of the small ranches . D.To make the small branches thicker . 27.Trees become unhealthy if the gardener .A.To help a wound to dry .B.To cover a rough surface .C.damages some of the small side branchesD.Allows too many branches to grow in the middle28.Why is a special material painted on the tree ?A.To help a wound to dry . B.to cover a rough surface .C.To make a wound smooth . D.To prevent disease entering a wound . 29.A good gardener prunes a tree .A.several times throughout the year B.as quickly as possibleC.occasionally when necessary D.regularly every winter30.What was the author’s purpose when writing this passage ?A.To discuss different methods of pruning .B.To introduce some common knowledge of pruning .C.To explain how trees develop disease .D.To give practical instruction for pruning a tree .第二节信息匹配(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)下面是一篇报纸上的文章,请将标有A—E的段落插入文章中标号为61—65的适合位置,使这篇文章意义完整,结构连贯。

I stopped at a gas station about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register(收款台), I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend's. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I'd left the lights on all day, and the battery(电池)was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership - a shop selling cars - was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom."Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?" I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment, so when I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you, and it meant a lot, he said."Thank you" - two powerful words. Unit 1 Art李仕才一、阅读理解。

Flaubert had it that “one way of tolerating existence is to lose oneself in literature as in an unending party”.It turns out that reading doesn't only help us to tolerate existence, but actually lengthens it.A recent study by Yale University researchers, published online in the journal Social Science & Medicine, concluded that “book readers experienced a 20 percent reduction in the risk of death over the 12 years of followup compared to nonreaders”.The data was obtained from the study sponsored by the National Institute on Aging. The study looked at 3,635 subjects, all older than 50,whom the researchers divided into three groups:those who didn't read books, those who read up to 3.5 hours a week and those who read more than 3.5 hours a week. The findings were remarkable:on average, book readers survived almost two years longer than those who didn't crack open a book. The more the subjects read, the longer they lived, but as little as 30 minutes a day was still beneficial in terms of survival.Accounting for factors such as education level, income and health status, the study found that those who read more than 3.5 hours weekly were 23 percent less likely to die during that 12year period. Those who read up to 3.5 hours—an average of a half hour a day—were 17 percent less likely.“In other words, just like a healthy diet and exercise, books appear to promote a significant survival advantage,”the authors concluded. Why or how that's_the_case remains unclear;the research showedonly an association between book reading and longevity, not a causal relationship. But the findings are not so surprising.Other recent research showed that reading novels appears to increase both brain connectivity and sympathy.1.Why does the author mention Flaubert's words in the first paragraph?A.To stress the value of reading.B.To compare reading with a party.C.To introduce the study on reading.D.To support the findings of the study.2.From the text, what can we learn about the study?A.No similar study on reading has been carried out.B.The process of the study lasted more than ten years.C.It shows readers live two years longer than nonreaders.D.It shows time spent on reading increases one's love for it.3.What do the underlined words“that's the case”probably mean?A.Reading books enables people to live longer.B.Reading is similar to a healthy diet and exercise.C.Reading books is closely associated with longevity.D.Reading increases brain connectivity and sympathy.4.Where can we most probably read this text?A.https:///lifeandstyle/family.B.https:///b/books/comingsoon.C.https:///news/toyourhealth.D.http:///Book_Recommendations.【解题导语】研究发现,阅读和长寿有一定的联系,阅读者的平均寿命比不读书的人长将近两岁。

AWelcome to the Civic Art Museum's Exhibit of West African Art,showing pieces from our collections.BackgroundThe peoples of West Africa, including the Yoruba, the Dogon, the Igbo, and the Akan, have a long art tradition.Tribes (部落) in the area have developed different styles of art and architecture that are suited to the climate and available materials and based on their traditions.Gallery A:Photographs of Traditional West African Architecture This section shows historical and contemporary photographs of traditional West African architecture.Of particular interest are the photographs of the Dogon village. The design of the Dogon village is based on the human figure.Certain types of buildings are placed in particular areas according to the Dogon' s complex philosophical(哲学上的) tradition. For example, the men's houses are placed in the “head” of the village, the leader's house is in the “chest”,and the w omen's houses are in the “hands”.Gallery B:West African MasksThe art of mask making is well developed in West Africa.Masks are important to West African traditions and have clear social, political, and economic roles. However, most masks are worn only at particular times or on special occasions. For example, among the Dan and the Kota, certain people wear special masks to show their power when they act as judges and policemen within the community.Among the Bambara of Mali, headdresses are worn during planting and harvest celebrations.Gallery C:West African SculpturesWest African sculptures are made from materials such as metal or wood. They are based on tribal traditions and are quite different. The Dogon are especially known for making figures of their ancestors. They believe their ancestors, called Nommo, came down from the sky at the beginning of time.Nommo figures are often shown with their hands reaching out to the sky.The collection contains several wonderful examples of Nommo sculptures.【语篇解读】本文是一篇应用文。

Last weekend I visited Rome for the first time. I spent three busy days in the capital of Italy, seeing lots of tourist attractions and walking down streets lit by Christmas decorations. There were a lot of things I love about the city.
Rome is one of the most ancient cities in the world and is full of wonderful relics (遗迹)from its distant past. These monuments include the Roman Forum and the vast Coliseum where gladiators used to fight each other until death and hunt animals coming from another country. The ruins of buildings and temples are fascinating. You can't quite believe how old they are.
I studied the masterpieces of the Renaissance period at university and was very excited to see them in real life. I walked around the museum in Vatican City and saw plenty of famous sculptures(雕塑). The best part of the visit was, without doubt, the Sistine Chapel Ceiling, painted in the early 16th。
