My parents have boxes full of my artwork from over the years. They always encouraged my creativity and told me I had a special talent.This year, our art teacher Mrs. Reynolds told the class that we would all be making posters to advertise and promote the annual school art show. The art show displays artwork from students of all grades and it's a huge event that everyone's families come to. My poster is going to be super eye-catching and make everyone really excited about the art show!First, Mrs. Reynolds had us start by brainstorming ideas and making rough sketches in our sketchbooks. She said the poster needed to be bright, colorful, and engaging. It had to make people want to come see all the awesome student artwork. I had so many ideas running through my mind - maybe I could draw kids painting or sculpting? Or different art supplies? Hmm, I needed to pick something really special.After thinking about it for a while, I decided my poster would depict a huge canvas that seemed to be jumping off the page. Inside the canvas, I would create a whimsical, imaginative scene with fun colors and funky characters. Sort of like stepping into another world! I did a bunch of tiny doodles trying out different ideas for what could be inside the canvas world.Once I had a concept sketch I was happy with, I got to work on making the poster big and bold. Mrs. Reynolds gave us each a giant piece of poster board to use as our canvas. I broke out my colored pencils, markers, paints, and got ready to create my masterpiece!First, I drew the large canvas that would be the main focus. I made the edges look bent and warped, like it was coming right off the paper. I used a ruler to make the lines clean and straight. Then, I colored in the canvas area with a bright yellow acrylic paint.While that dried, I started sketching out the scene that would be inside the whacky canvas world. I drew afriendly-looking dragon flying through the sky, carrying crayons and paintbrushes in its mouth instead of fire. Underneath, there were rolling green hills with giant pencils, brushes and art tubes sticking out of the ground. In the corner, somemischievous-looking characters were painting rainbows and patterns all over everything.Filling in all those detailed drawings with color took forever!I used my colored pencils and markers to make the dragon's scales bright purple and green. The hills were colored in with textured green marker, and the pencils and brushes were colored in every rainbow shade. For the silly characters, I went super wild and creative with mixing and blending colors in wacky patterns.Finally, the background had to be spectacular too. I didn't want to leave any white space. Using my paintbrush, I created a splattered, starry night sky full of blues, purples, and hints of pink and yellow. Little sparkles and stars were scattered across the whole poster. It looked magical!Adding the lettering was the final step. In big, bubbly letters I wrote "OMS Annual Art Show - A World of Imagination!" Spacing the letters out and making them look 3D was tricky, but it ended up looking awesome. A few more splatters of colorful paint around the lettering gave it extra pizazz.Whew, I was so proud when I finally got to step back and admire my completed poster! So many colors, so much detail, so much creativity packed into one giant design. It looked likesomething you would find in an art museum, not made by a 7th grader.Mrs. Reynolds gathered all our finished posters at the front of the classroom to judge them. I was blown away by how talented everyone was - there were some seriously impressive works of art. But I also knew in my heart that my canvas world poster was really special and unique.When Mrs. Reynolds announced that mine was the winner and would be used to promote the art show, I practically jumped for joy! All my hard work and the hours of careful detailing had paid off. My design would be put up all around the school and potentially even in the front office to grab people's attention.
