The Five People You Meet in Heaven“Each of us was in your life for a reason. You may not have known the reason at the time, and that is what heaven is for, for understanding your life on earth.”As the Blue Man said to Eddie, each life is associated with another, which is like the cobbles at the bottom of the river, one related to each other. The five people Eddie met in heaven taught him five lessons. The Blue Man gave the first lesson to him, about the equality between life and death. In our world, every day there is someone killed because of other people directly or indirectly. But we shouldn’t regard this phenomenon as unfairness. There is life, so there is death. The captain, the second person Eddie met in heaven, ever saved Eddie at the expense of his own life. He gave the second lesson to Eddie, about sacrifice. It is unnecessary for anyone to regret their sacrifice they ever did, even the loss of precious life. Because we should realize that we haven’t lost our lives actually, the lives we lost are just continued by another form, and by another person. The third person Eddie met in heaven is a woman called Ruby. She is the wife of the owner of the park in which Eddie worked. Ruby enabled Eddie to change his incomprehension about his father, and make each of us know that hatred is a kind of poison, when we hurt others, we are also hurting ourselves. Only by getting rid of hatred can we live a happylife. Then Eddie met his beloved wife, Marguerite. After Marguerite’s death, Eddie was always in low spirits. But she told Eddie and told all of us, lost love is still love,it only takes a different form. You can’t see their smile or bring them food or tousle their hair or move them around a dance floor. But when those senses weaken, another heightens, memory becomes your partner. You nurture it. You hold it. You dance with it.The last person in Eddie’s heaven is the girl Eddie failed to save in the war. In Eddie’s eyes, he never did anything well. But actually, Eddie was always protecting the children played in the park by his careful working and his love. So the last lesson the girl gave Eddiewas that everything we do is meaningful, and we have accomplished many things in our limited life. The story of Eddie ended at last. But I still remember that Marguerite said, life has to end, but love doesn’t.。

概要写作题型特点概要写作(summary),《牛津高阶英语词典》(第8 版)对它的定义如下:“A summary is a brief statement that gives only the main points of something not the details”。

The summary of Connected, but aloneAt the beginning of the speech, the author mentioned her experience of two TED talks and tried to tell her own comprehension about the greatly changed impact oftechnology on us,she thought the technologies of mobile communication had great psychologically power which not only changed what we do but also changed who we are.First, through several examples about people text or do email in any time andanywhere, the author thought we had dug ourselves a trap to get used to being alone together which will affect the relation with each other and ourselves.Next, people now use the way of Goldilocks effect to be connected by technologies of mobile communication because they can edit and delete and simplify human relationships,in the meantime, for only more connection, people sacrifice conversation, which will damage our self reflective ability and unable to understand each other. Then, experts have developed sociable robots to accompany the people who need them, the robots seem can understand and comfort people but it has reflected we use technology to help us to be accompanied andfeel connected in ways we can control comfortably.Nowadays the phones can make people excited during which time they change both our minds and hearts, which has generated the new lifestyle:“I share therefore Iam”.We think it’s simple that we can feel less lonely if we are always being connected with others,in fact,we’ll feel more isolated without the capacity of being alone. At the end of the speech, the author encouraged people to build a more self-ware relationship with digital technology.First, begin to think solitude is a good thing to us,in other hand, talking and listening are good ways to show your trueself.Second, because we have each other,we can be optimistic about how we can promote our lives, and if our vulnerability can be recognized. Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Today I’ll share two speeches with you. One is “The surprising science of happiness”made by Dan Gilbert, and another is “School Kills Creativity”made by Ken Robinson. They all come from TED.they are similar and they are different.First of all, both Dan and Kenhas a strong sense of humor. We all know that people can’t pay their attention on one thing for a longtime, especially in such a long speech about twenty minutes. So what should speakers do? Dan and ken tell you! Be humorous! It’s quite useful. honestly, at first I have little interest in their topic ,I thought I would fall asleep, but I have watched their speech carefully for 20 minutes. It’s amazing! Unbelievable! So that’s the power of humor.Secondly, they all use many examples, they act like blood in our body and they make the whole speech full of energy. What’s more, through the examples we can understand what the speaker want to tell us easily. And that’s the point:it makes the speech more receivable. However, Dan act like a scientist, to support his view ”Happiness can be synthesized”he uses a lot of experiments, that make the abstract topic easy to learn. While, ken act likephilosopher, he just stand in the stage, no gestures, even though, I am impressed by his wisdom. That’s what I learn from them and that’s what I wanna share with you , thank you! That’s all. Thank you. My big idea is a very, very small idea that can unlock billions of big ideas that are at the moment dormant inside us. And my little idea that will do that is sleep.(Laughter)(Applause)This is a room of type-A women. This is a room of sleep-deprived women. And I learned the hard way, the value of sleep. Two-and-a-half years ago, I fainted from exhaustion. I hit my head on my desk. I broke my cheekbone, I got five stitches on my right eye. And I began the journey of rediscovering the value of sleep. And in the course of that, I studied, I met with medical doctors, scientists, and I'm here to tell you that the way to a more productive, more inspired, more joyful life is getting enough sleep. (Applause)And we women are going to lead the way in this new revolution, this new feminist issue. We are literally going to sleep our way to the top, literally.(Laughter)(Applause)Because unfortunately for men, sleep deprivation has become a virility symbol. I was recently having dinner with a guy who bragged that he had only gotten four hours sleep the night before. And I feltlike saying to him -- but I didn't say it -- I felt like saying, You know what? If you had gotten five, this dinner would have been a lot more interesting.(Laughter)There is now a kind of sleep deprivation one-upmanship. Especially here in Washington, if you try to make a breakfast date, and you say, How about eight o'clock? they're likely to tell you, Eight o'clock is too late for me, but that's okay, I can get a game of tennis in and do a few conference calls and meet you at eight. And they think that means that they are so incredibly busy and productive, but the truth is they're not, because we, at the moment, have had brilliant leaders in business, in finance, in politics, making terrible decisions. So a high I.Q. does not mean that you're a good leader, because the essence of leadership is being able to see the iceberg before it hits the Titanic. And we've had far too many icebergs hitting our Titanics. In fact, I have a feeling that if Lehman Brothers was Lehman Brothers and Sisters, they might still be around. (Applause) While all the brothers were busy just beinghyper-connected 24/7, maybe a sister would have noticed the iceberg, because she would have woken up from a seven-and-a-half- or eight-hour sleep and have been able to see the big picture. So as we are facing all the multiple crises in our world at the moment, what is good for us on a personal level, what's going to bring more joy, gratitude, effectiveness in our lives and be the best for our own careers is also what is best for the world. So I urge you to shut your eyes and discover the great ideas that lie inside us, to shut your engines and discover the power of sleep.Thank you.(Applause)。

He ran out into the garden: he hurried across the grass and came near the child. When he came quite close, his face became red with anger and he said, "Who has dared to wound you?" There were marks on the child's hands, and on the little feet. "Who had dared to wound you?" cried the giant. "Tell me and I will take my sword and kill him!" "No," said the child, "These are the wounds of love."

So goodbye now.T.K.: Goodbye.Narrator: Ever after, the tavern keeper and his wife treated people with kindness. What's more, they even helped poor people in need. The End。

Reflections on "The Five People You Meet in Heaven""The Five People You Meet in Heaven" by Mitch Albom isa profound and emotional journey that takes readers to a place beyond the ordinary realm of existence. The narrative, centered around Eddie, a maintenance worker at Ruby Pier Amusement Park, who dies in a tragic accident, offers a unique perspective on life, death, and the connections we make with others. The book begins with Eddie's death and his subsequent journey to what he assumes is heaven. What follows is a series of encounters with five individuals from his past, each representing a different aspect of his life and its lessons. These encounters are not random but are carefully chosen to give Eddie a chance to reconcile his past, understand his impact on others, and ultimately find peace. The first person Eddie meets is Ruby, a little girl hesaved from a falling carousel horse years ago. Ruby's presence reminds Eddie of the significance of his smallest actions and how they can have a profound impact on others. It is a powerful reminder that every moment, every choice we make, matters. Ruby's innocence and gratitude forEddie's kindness are a stark contrast to the neglect and indifference he experienced in his own life, highlighting the asymmetry of human relationships and the importance of empathy. The second encounter is with Marguerite, a war veteran and Eddie's mother. This meeting is emotional and complex, as it forces Eddie to confront his childhood and the relationship he had with his mother. Marguerite's story of sacrifice and love, despite her own challenges and trauma, is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Through her, Eddie learns about the cycle of love and the importance of forgiveness, not just for others but also for oneself. The third person Eddie meets is a stranger named Tasha, who represents the randomness and unpredictability of life.Tasha's death was a senseless act of violence, and her presence in heaven challenges Eddie's understanding of fate and destiny. Through Tasha, he learns that while we may not be able to control the cards we are dealt in life, we can choose how we play them. This encounter encourages Eddie to embrace the present and make the most of every moment, rather than dwelling on the past or fearing the future. The fourth encounter is with his brother, Mike, who died years ago in a car accident caused by Eddie's recklessness. This meeting is the most difficult for Eddie, as it requires him to face his guilt and the consequences of his actions. Mike's forgiveness and understanding are eye-opening for Eddie, teaching him that while we may never be able to erase our mistakes, we can learn from them and move forward. This encounter brings closure to a long-standing rift between the brothers and allows Eddie to finally let go of his guilt. The final person Eddie meets is Annie, a young girl he never knew existed but whose life he saved by fixing a faulty ride at the amusement park. Annie's presence is abeautiful reminder of the interconnectedness of all lives and the impact we can have on others without even realizing it. Through Annie, Eddie learns that every act of kindness, every effort to make the world a better place, matters.Throughout these encounters, Eddie undergoes a profound transformation. He goes from being a man full of regrets and self-doubt to someone who finds peace and acceptance. The lessons he learns from these five people help him reconcile his past, understand his purpose in life, and embrace the present."The Five People You Meet in Heaven" is not just a story about death and heaven; it is a story about life, love, and the connections we make with others. It teaches us that every moment, every encounter, is significant and has the potential to change our lives. The book encourages us to be more aware of the impact we have on others, to cherish the relationships we have, and to make every moment count.Mitch Albom's writing is poignant and emotional, evoking strong feelings in the reader. The narrative is engaging and flows seamlessly, keeping the reader hooked until the very end. The characters are well-developed and believable, and their stories are heartfelt and touching. The themes of love, loss, and redemption are universal and resonate with readers across cultures and backgrounds. In conclusion, "The Five People You Meet in Heaven" is a must-read for anyone looking for a thought-provoking and emotional journey. It teaches us valuable lessons about life, love, and the connections we make with others. The book leaves the reader with a sense of hope and optimism, reminding us that even in the face of death and adversity, there is still beauty and purpose in life.。

Summary

Summary

Summary:Unit One“The End of Something”, by Ernest Hemingway, is a short story about two young people who witness how time can change the world and the people in it.The broken mill represents Nick and Marjorie's broken relationship. Once, the mill was the center of the town. The town was a place full of activity. In the present of the story, as the time passed by ,the mill lies deserted, as does the relationship between Nick and Marjorie.we can clearly see that time can change everything , when they cannot stay young forever,so the weak foundation of their relationship is torn down and left in pieces. Eventhough they will meet one day ,the love is not there, because the two lovers have their own understanding of love.Just as the story says“ the fish will not strike anymore, and love is not fun anymore.” The good old past feeling isn't good enough anymore, even one of the lovers does not want give up on catching the love, and still clings to what is left and still hopes for the best. The past has become past, only can we cherish the good memory. what one must focus on is what is, now, and what is to come, tomorrow. One must look beyond what was and look for the love belong to themselves.Unit TwoIgnorance is a condition or state where a person ignores, disregards, or overlooks knowledge about something. It is when the person is uninformed, is uneducated about something. However, only an person is full of knowledge, can he has courage to admit his ignorance. The author began the essay by telling the experience of waking in the morning and finding him practically ignorant of anything. The author felt sad about his current store of knowledge after many years of costly education. He has a limited range of knowledge and the inadequate understanding of the major phenomena of the world. However, it suddenly occurred to him when he has gone his way serene and happy, he may be the only one who is ignorant, for anyone will not admit that he is a ignorant person. So someone may have the psychology of remaining to be a happy ignorant person, so he or she would not be able to know more knowledge . And he or she is not vulnerable to ignorance.Unit Three“A sound mind in a sound body is a short, but a full description of a happy state in this world.” Nowadays research suggests that we should think there is deep link between body and mind health in order to achieve happy state of mind. In this way, exercise is a state of mind. Michael Craig Miller uses scientists’ experiments as evidence to show that exercise has exerted great effects on people’s mind health. Regular exercise can improve your mood, decrease anxiety, and raises self-esteem through inducing biological changes. Exercise is also a pretty good antidepressant which can relieves and prevents depression through regulating mood and storing memories. On the other hand, exercise is under genetic control. Genes can influence both people’s physiological responses to exercise and people’s subjectiveexperience of exercise. In the end, the author advices that we form the habit of exercise. You needn’t spend too much and the type of exercise doesn’t matter. Continuing exercise and motivation to exercise are good to your body and mind health.Unit Four“Opportunity is the crux of the American ideal.” People in the American society used to think that with hardwork and self-determination, they are sure to succeed and realize their dreams. But in recent years the traditional doctrine of “American dream” is seriously challenged, esp. with regard to the economic development. Clive Crook holds that in spite of new immigrants, America is already a middle-aged country, and pessimistic spirit has come to dominate the national consciousness. Most important of all, the economic mobility in America is getting lower and lower as compared to any other western country. The idea of the “American Dream” is starting to fade since rich children stay rich whereas poor children still stay poor. And the real focus of any effort to restore economic opportunity is to get out of poverty, and to this end one effective way may be to improve education, which will definitely have a great effect on economic mobility across generations.Unit FiveIt is probably safe to say that every language has a pair of words expressing good and evil, for it is generally believed that a sense of moral judgment and a distinction between good and evil or right and wrong are cultural universals. But what really is good, and what really is evil? Moral relativists would argue that the standards of good and evil are only products of local culture, custom, or prejudice. Moreover, believers in the duality of “good versus evil” would say evil cannot exist without good, nor good without evil, as they are both objective states and opposite ends of the same scale. As boys and girls, we were taught to do good, not evil. (Remember that good will be rewarded with good, and evil with evil?) Yet as Plato observed, there are relatively few ways to do good, but there are countless ways to do evil, which can therefore have a much greater impact on our lives, and the lives of other beings capable of suffering. For this reason, some philosophers (e.g. Bernard Gert) maintain that preventing evil is more important than promoting good in formulating moral rules and in conduct. To prevent evil, the author of this article argues, we must first know what is truly “evil”, for there can be no genuine understanding of goodness in human behavior unless we also understand evil. Beginning with the recognition that neither good nor evil exist outside the human personality, the author distinguishes creative and destructive potentials, and then finds social forces that may activate destructive potentials. With such whats about evil, the author concludes the text by offering some hows as to teaching our children.。

SummaryThe Five People You Meet in HeavenThis story starts at an end.Today is Eddie's 83rd birthday. And his life ended in this day. Eddie is maintenance of Ruby Pier an amusement park. For many years, he examined all the facilities and made sure they worked well. He was scrupulous about every detail in his work. Before his death, he examined all the facilities as usual. After that, he sat in an old beach chair. At that moment, he began to think the first time he met with Marguerite. Suddenly, he heard a woman shouted. There was something wrong with the Free Fall, and four people are in danger. In this accident Eddie died in order to save a little girl. After he died, he woke up at a teacup in the Ruby Pier amusement park, not the park where he died, but the one 75 years ago. Then Eddie ran out of the teacup. He ran through the Ruby Pier, and then stopped at an empty ticket kiosk in front of a large theater, where he met with the first person—the blue man.Eddie was confused, because he did not know the blue man at all. The blue man told him that heaven did not like people said as a paradise garden. It is a place for you to understand your life on earth. Eddie also got from the blue man that he would meet with five people in heaven. All of them are related to his life and the blue man was the first people he met. When Eddie was seven, one day he played baseball with his friends across the street and when he ran into the street to get the ball, the Blue Man was driving by. The blue man was afraid of hitting Eddie. Then Eddie back out of the street safely, but the blue man was still terrified. He was anxious and hit another truck which killed him. After hearing about that Eddie was very sad. The blue man seems already forgive him and told him a lesson. Fairness does not govern life and death. If it did, no good person will die young. And events are not random there is a balance in it. One withers, another grows. Birth and death are part of a whole. Then Eddie met with the second person—a Captain in the Second World War. During the war, Eddie and his men were captured in Philippines, and they were caught in a camp. One day, Eddie and his men managed to escape from the camp. Before they left, they burned the camp, out of hate of the enemy. Eddie saw a child in the fire, as he left the fired camp. He wanted to go back to save it, but he was shot by the captain in his right leg. Eddie felt guilty for his rest life because he could not save the child. After he went to heaven, he was informed that the Captain shot him for he did not want Eddie to die. After he knew the reason, Eddie started to feel released. And the Captain taught him a new lesson. Death is not the ending of everything. And no one dies for nothing and that when you sacrifice something precious, such as a leg, you always gain something. In the same way, the Captain sacrificed his life to save the life of Eddie, and Eddie sacrificed himself to save the life of a girl. The third person Eddie met with was Ruby. She told him the reason of Eddie's father's death. His father's friend Mickey lost job and came to Eddie's father to seeking help. However, when his father went out, Mickey attempted to assault his mother. When he saw Eddie's father went back, he ran out and jumped into sea. Inorder to save Mickey, his father followed Mickey to jump into sea, but infected with pneumonia. Then his father died from it. Eddie learned endurance and forgiveness in this story. Ruby told him anger was self-destructive and that he must forgive. In the heaven Eddie forgave his father and move on.The forth story was give by Marguerite, his wife. They have a happy life when they were alive. Marguerite and Eddie loved each other very much. They do not have a child. Marguerite loved child very much, so she wanted to adopt one. They have saved money for that. On Eddie's 39th birthday, he went out to bet horse. When Marguerite went to find Eddie, she got hurt in a car accident. After few month's treatment, they ran out of the money prepared for child adoption. Three years later, Marguerite was attacked by tumor on the brain. Then she died from it, when she was 47 years old. The forth lesson is the power of love. People would die one day, but the love is permanent. Love is still love. It takes different form. The last story was told by Tala, the girl who was burned to death in Philippines. She hided in the camp, for that her mother told her that the camp was safety. However, Eddie burned the camp, and he could not save her because his leg was shot by the Captain. The little girl told him that though he was guilty by burning her to death, he worked hard in Ruby Pier and saved another girl to compensate. Also that was the meaning of his life. The fifth lesson given by Tala is that good deeds will always lead to happy ending.Three days after the accident, the park opened again.。
