However, Jean's father did not agree with Ponce, and prevented them from getting married, largely because of the young man's view of non-orthodox religion. In the same year, a pair of twins from Jean and Robert were born, and this was the first two of their nine children. Later, Burns began to marry with Mary Campbell ("Plateau Mary"), intended to marry and emigrate to Jamaica, but Mary died at birth.During the period, Burns published his first work "Scottish Dialect Poems" (1786). The success of the collection made him abandon all the plans to leave Scotland. Instead, he went to Edinburgh and became a celebrity in social and literary circles. However, the most important thing he did during this time was to collect, edit and sort out Scottish folk songs. From 1787 until his death, he helped to edit James Johnson's "Scottish Music Museum" (1787-1803). In the last three years of his life, he collaborated with George Thomson to create the "Select Collections of Original Scottish Airs" (1793-1814).Many of Penrose's early biographers believe that excessive drinking and life debauchery caused him to die young.

Burns ushered a tendency that prevailed during the high time of Romanticism
1) To
cultivate medieval literary legacy and embrace national culture; 2) To introduce daily expressions into poetic diction; 3) To pick up the life of common people as poetic subjects and show great sympathy
Our Comments
1) Burns is one of the greatest song writers in the world. He is the national poet of Scotland. Most of his poems and songs were written in Scotch dialect. It is here we have the best, the truest and fullest revelation of the poet’s mind and heart. 2) Burns was a plowman. He came from the people and wrote for the people. He was the people’s poet. 3) Burns had a deep knowledge and an excellent mastery of the old Scotch song tradition. His peasant origin and environment helped him on capturing the happy, simplicity, humor, directness and optimism, which are characteristics of all old Scotch songs. He learned a lot from it . This was the main factor of his great success. 4) As a poet of the peasants, Burns has a special superiority over other poets. It is exactly in the rural theme that Burns is entirely in his elements. He was a peasant. He was himself in his own rural theme. He did not need to set himself to search for themes. He was surrounded by them. They almost force themselves on his attention. Here lies the root of Burns’s great success as a poet of the peasants.
Burns’s position and his features
A great Scottish peasant poet; a national poet of Scotland Numerous are Burns’s songs of love and friendship. His great success was largely due to his comprehensive knowledge and excellent mastery of the old song traditions. His poetry have a musical quality that helps to perpetuate the sentiment.

Robert Burns
A brief introduction to Burns
Burns was born two miles (3 km) south of Ayr, in Alloway, South Ayrshire, Scotland, the eldest of the seven children of William Burnes (1721–1784) (Robert Burns spelled his surname Burnes until 1786), a self-educated tenant farmer from Dunnottar, The Mearns, and Agnes Broun (1732–1820), the daughter of a tenant farmer from Kirkoswald, South Ayrshire. He was born in a house built by his father (now the Burns Cottage Museum), where he lived until Easter 1766, when he was seven years old. William Burnes sold the house and took the tenancy of the 70-acre (280,000 m2) Mount Oliphant farm, southeast of Alloway. Here Burns grew up in poverty and hardship, and the severe manual labour of the farm left its traces in a premature stoop and a weakened constitution.
