I need to mail a package before my lunch break ends.M: If you make a left at the end of the block, it’s the large gray building. But unfortunately, it’s closed today because it’s Memorial Day.Text 2M: Hey, Cathy! Nice to see you. I just had the worst weekend of my life up in California’s wine country. It rained the whole time! How was your weekend?W: I saw Beyoncé and Jay-Z in concert together. It cost about $200, but it was worth every penny! Text 3W: Can I help you find something, sir?M: Yes. I need a strong lock for my bike… I am a photographer, and I often have to leave my bike for long periods of time while I go t ake pictures. I’m hoping to spend less than $50, if possible.Text 4W: My husband and I are having an anniversary party… Do you think we should mail invitations or just invite people in person?M: Paper invitations are nice, but everything is done online nowadays! Besides, it will be easier to keep track of who is planning to come if you do it that way.Text 5W: Do you happen to know where I can get a deal on flowers?M: Sure. There is a little flower shop downtown that sells a dozen roses for $20. Or if you want more unique flowers, you can get those as well.W: Roses are fine. I just need a good deal.Text 6M: I’m going to New York on vacation. How much is a subway pass?W: Well, a one-way ticket is $3, but it would be cheaper to buy a seven-day pass.M: How much is that?W: $31. But then you can use the subway as much as you want. It also saves you the trouble of standing in line every day.M: That is a better deal. You know, I plan to visit as many museums as I can!W: I didn’t know you were intereste d in art.M: Yeah. I love to paint in my spare time. Because I’m a banker, many people assume I studied economics. But I actually majored in art history.W: I never would’ve guessed that!Text 7W: How was your vacation, Matthew?M: It was pretty fun. Unfortunately, when I got to the airport in Phoenix, I discovered that the airline had lost one of my suitcases.W: Oh no! That’s very inconvenient.M: Yeah. I was upset because I had gifts for my family in there.W: Have they located it? My suitcase was lost when I flew to New Orleans last year. I was worried that I’d never see it again…M: Yeah, they found it. It was accidentally put on a flight to Seattle. So, they’re sending it back to Phoenix.W: Well, that’s a relief!M: Yeah, but it won’t arrive until m idnight. So, the airline will have an employee bring it to my house in the morning.W: Well, at least the airline has good customer service!M: Yeah. I’ve been pretty happy with it.Text 8M: What are you doing this Saturday, Jean?W: Well, first thing in the morning, I’m going to take my driving test.M: Really? I thought you had a driver’s license!W: No. I’ve never needed one. I’ve always lived in Boston, and it’s easy to get around on public transportation. But now, I’m taking a job in Los Angeles.M: Congratulations!W: Thanks! But everyone knows that to live in LA, you have to drive. So, I’ve been taking lessons, and I’m going to take my test tomorrow.M: Are you planning to buy a car once you pass your test?W: Yes. I’ve already picked out the car I w ant — a 2016 Honda Accord.M: Oh, that’s a nice-looking car.W: It is, but I’m not buying it for that reason. It has the safety features that I want.M: Such as?W: Well, it has a back view camera. As a new driver, I feel more comfortable with that than with just a back view mirror.M: That makes sense. My Toyota has that, too.W: It also tells you when you should stop or when it’s safe to change lanes.Text 9W: Welcome, Mr. Bates.M: Thank you.W: Can I get you a cup of tea or some water?M: I’m fine. I just had coffee. But thanks.W: OK, well then please take a seat… I’ve reviewed your application and you seem to be a good candidate for a loan.M: Thank you.W: I do have a couple of questions… First, I noticed that your income dropped last year. Can you explain that?M: Yes. I started my own law company last year. For the first few months, we didn’t have a lot of customers. But we have many customers now. We are on track this year to earn a large profit. W: I see. Starting your own business is very ambitious. Did you have to take out a business loan for that?M: No. I got help from my family and friends.W: Very well. So, I see that you are looking to buy a $500,000 house. Will you be buying it by yourself?M: Yes. I am not married.W: How much money will you put down on the house?M: 20%.W: All right, sir. Well, thank you for this information. I need to review this application with our senior loan officer before we can give you a final answer. You can expect to hear from us by the end of the week.Text 10Dear students,Welcome to the new school term! While the youth stood in the light place searching his pockets for money, the boatman lifted a lamp, with the help of which, together with the newly risen moon, he took a careful look at the stranger. He was a young man of about eighteen years, clearly country brought up, and was, as it seemed, on his first visit to town. He was wearing a rough grey coat, which was in good shape, and which had seen many winters before this one. The jacket under his coat was made of leather and trousers fitted tightly to a pair of strong legs; his stockings of blue yarn(毛绒) must have been the work of a mother or sister, and on his head was a hat, which in its better days had perhaps protected the grayer head of the young man’s father. In his left hand was a walking stick, and on his strong shoulders hung a leather bag. Brown hair, well-shaped features, bright, cheerful eyes were nature’s gifts. The youth, whose name was Robin, paid the boatman, and then walked forward into the town with a light step, as if he had not already traveled more than thirty miles that day. As he walked, he looked around as eagerly as if he were entering London or New York instead of the little city in New England.24. Which of the following statements is true?A. This boy was rich.B. The coat the young man was wearing __________.A. was new and in good shapeB. was cut out very wellC. had been used for a lot of yearsD. fitted him wellCRelieving poverty has been one of our government’s top concerns for the past decades. Po verty(贫困) in remote areas in China is virtually a great obstacle for the Chinese to get common progress; thus, it is urgent for us to help the people there to shake off poverty the sooner the better. For this aim, the government has already sent technicians andexperts to poverty-stricken areas to help boost local agricultural production and teach the locals new techniques. The Ministry of Labor has also trained many rural laborers through different programs. But all these are not enough. Several other ways have been proposed as follows.First of all, the government should encourage a small part of the people in the remote areas to get wealthy ahead of others by equipping them with relevant funds and agricultural technology. These “better-offs” can not only set a good example but give confidence to the poorer in their efforts to get rid of poverty. When all the people get rich, the general level of living standard can be greatly improved. With their living standard improved, they can attach greater importance to environmental protection and are willing to input considerable amount of money to educate their children. Only in this way is a sustainable development guaranteed.Secondly, we must call upon people in all walks of life throughout the country, especially those wealthy citizens in coastal areas to help those struggling below poverty line in poor remote regions out. We must realize that only after all Chinese people live a comfortable life can we be peacefully enjoying material prosperity in life. Helps can come in various forms----donating money to the poor family and books to school drop-outs, college graduates volunteering to work in the most needed regions, bringing knowledge to them, etc.The last but not the least, the government should raise the rate of tax on the rich. This can shorten the gap between the poor and the rich as well as benefit the country’s revenues(财政收入) whose better part is in turn allocated to the poor remote areas.Admittedly, it is never easy to cast off the shadow of poverty in the remote areas completely in the short run. But every one of us should go all out to help those in poverty, we are confident that our country will be more powerful and prosperous in the process of relieving poverty.28. What does the underlined “shake off” in paragraph 1 mean?A. get rid ofB. set offC. die offD. put off29. How many ways are introduced to relieve the poverty according to the text?A. threeB. fourC. fiveD. six30. What is the best title for the text?A. Blocks to the Progress and Development of ChinaB. Approaches to Raising the Rate of Tax on the RichC. Reasons to Relieve Poverty in Remote Areas in ChinaD. Suggestions to Relieve Poverty in Remote Areas in China31. How does the author organize the text?A. by comparisonB. by listingC. by definitionD. by contrastDAs soon as a person dies, decomposition(分解) begins. And the first visitors arrive. “Within 5 to 15 minutes of death, flies or other insects begin to colonize the body.” says Rabi Musah, an organic chemist at the University at Albany. She says different species turn up at different stages of deco mposition. “So because of that, depending upon what entomological(昆虫学的) evidence you find, you can learn something about when the person died in terms of the timing of the death.”Flies don't tend to stick around when disturbed by detectives. But they do leave behind eggs. The eggs are hard to tell apart by appearance alone, so specialists raise them until they hatch, a few weeks later—and they get a species ID and, with a little guesswork, a person's time of death. But Musah has come up with a more time-saving approach: chemical analysis of the eggs. She and her team investigated that method by first harvesting flies with pig-liver traps hidden throughout New York City. They collected the trapped flies and then chemically analyzed their eggs. And it turns out each species of fly egg has a unique chemical fingerprint—enough to tell the eggs apart without raising the eggs to maturity. The study is in the journal Analytical Chemistry.Musah and her colleague Jennifer Rosati are now testing the method on a rea l case. “And once we do that we will be publishing some case studies to illustrate(阐明) that this is a method that can be used, and hopefully eventually it's something that will stand up in court, and something that could speed up detective work—or help deal with a cold case.”32. Which of the following can best replace the underlined wor d “colonize” in paragraph 1?A. look forB. fight overC. carry awayD. gather on33. How can a specialist know a person’s time of death?A. By researching the habitual nature of flies.B. By relying on the entomological evidence.C. By distinguishing the appearance of flies.D. By discovering a new detective method.34. What can we infer about Musah’s approach from the last paragraph?A. Scientists have published studies about it.B. It is bound to make every cold case solved.C. It may help accelerate the detection of cases.D. It will be published in Analytical Chemistry.35. Where most probably can you see this article?A. In a science fiction.B. In a newspaper.C. In a medical paper.D.
