Unit 4 Changing TimesActive reading (1) Work in Corporate AmericaTeaching ObjectivesStudents will be able to:Learning how the types of work people do has changedReading how paper has taken over our working livesUnderstanding how to use irony to create empathyTeaching allotment (1 period = 2 hours)1st period: Pre-reading; While-reading (text structure; cultural notes; language points)2nd period: While-reading (language points; grammatical structures)3rd period: Check on students’ home r eading (Passage 6);Background InformationThis was written in 1972 by Russell Baker (1925 – ), a well-known American journalist and writer. It was collected by Sandra Fehl Tropp and Ann Pierson D’Angelo in their edited book Essays in Context (2000), published by Oxford University Press. The essay leads readers to think from a child’s perspective and to evaluate how a job is seen and understood in corporate America. It uses satire and humour to illustrate the writer’s critical views on corporate America. Culture PointsBlue-collar worker: A blue-collar worker is a member of the working class who typically performs manual labor and earns an hourly wage. Blue-collar workers are distinguished from those in the service sector and from white-collar workers, whose jobs are not considered manual labor. Blue-collar work may be skilled or unskilled, and may involve manufacturing, mining, building and construction trades, mechanical work, maintenance, repair and operations maintenance or technical installations. The white-collar worker, by contrast, performsnon-manual labor often in an office; and the service industry worker performs labor involving customer interaction, entertainment, retail and outside sales, and the like.Migrant worker in the US: According to the United States Public Health Service, there are an estimated 3.5 million migrant and seasonal farmworkers in the United States—men, women, and children who work in all fifty states during peak periods of agriculture. A migrant farmworker is an individual who moves from a permanent place of residence in order to be employed in agricultural work. Seasonal farmworkers perform similar work but do not move from their primary residence for the purpose of seeking farm equipment.China, the world largest agriculture country in terms of farming population, has 225.42 million rural migrant workers as of 2008, according to statistic from the National Statistics Bureau (NBS). Migrant workers are mainly form poor-income families and who leave the countryside to find jobs in cities. The average income of Chinese farmers is about one fourth that of the urban residents earn.White-collar worker: white-collar worker refers to a salaried professional or an educated worker who performs semi-professional office, administrative, and sales coordination tasks, as opposed to a blue-collar worker, whose job requires manual labor. "White-collar work" is aninformal term, defined in contrast to "blue-collar work".Home office: A home office is a space within an individual's personal residence that is used for business purposes. It may be a corner of a spare bedroom equipped with nothing more than a desk. Or, it could be one whole floor of a house filled with the latest in computer and communications devices. Whatever its size and composition, however, the home office is increasingly common in American business today. A majority of the estimated 40 million Americans who work from their homes are self-employed small business owners. In addition, many professionals maintain two offices, and a growing number are equipping their home computers with modems that allow them access to their office computer files. Many large corporations are also expanding experiments in "telecommuting," which enables employees to work from home, using modem-equipped computers, just as they would in the office.1. Where are these people? They are in a large office.2. What are the people doing? They are working with their computers.3. Why does the man standing compare Americans with Japanese? The Japanese have always been considered the most industrious and tireless in the world.4. Are those sitting there excited about being Number One?They do not seem to be very excited.5. What do you think the man sitting back mean?It seems that he is not in agreement with the man standing. Working longer doesn’t necessarily lead to a great country.6. Do you think they are doing something really necessary and important?I don’t think so.In today’s American jobs are not what the y used to be. Not long ago, when a father was asked about his job he could answer in terms that a child could come to grips with. Nowadays, when the parent take his offspring to his place of business in glass buildings that are really incomprehensive to c hildren. What’s more, it’s safe bet that even grown men have trouble visualizing what other men does in their jobs with his day. Therefore, it’s not difficult to imagine a poor child may answer “mulling over” after it beat’s me. the mysteries of work, when his friend asks him of his father’s job.Part A. James Earle Fraser said his goal was to design a coin thatwould be "truly American." In his search for symbols, he found none more distinctive than the American buffalo. Choosing to show a Native American on the other side of the coin, Fraser said the new nickel had "perfect unity of theme."Production of "Buffalo" or "Indian Head" nickels began in February 1913. A single coining press at the Philadelphia Mint (造币⼚) started turning out the nickels at the rate of 120 a minute. But after the first examples were introduced, The New York Times said they were "bad."Other critics said that the coin's "rough" surfaces would encourage counterfeiters (造假币的⼈). But the most seriouscomplaint about the nickel had to do with its inability to stand heavy use. One coin collectors' magazine predicted that the slightest wear would remove the date and the words Five Cents "beyond understanding."In 1938, the Government staged a competition for a new nickel picturing Thomas Jefferson. According to a news item of the day, the Department of Indian Affairs didn't receive a single complaint from Native Americans about the design change. Time passed and my cards sold well. My enthusiasm for the greeting card business grew quickly. All along, I had been drawing fantasy art: monsters, dragons, castles, etc. With the birth of my first son in 1980, the content of my work went through a pretty dramatic change.Fantasy went out of the window, and I began to illustrate reality. In the spring of 1983, we, The Mary Engelbreit Greeting Card Company, took our 12 little designs to New York to exhibit them ata national card show.I remember how big the show was. I just couldn't get over it. I had no idea there were so many different card companies. And it was exciting because our 12 little cards were getting a lot of attention in that huge place!I've been told one of the reasons we had so much success at that show is because my card style was different than anything else at the market. I typically draw complicated details and use deep colors and funny or meaningful quotations.By 1985, many greeting card publishers started noticing my art, and two of them approached me with licensing contracts.I have always believed if you choose a job you love, you'll never work a day in your life. If you ask about the mystery of my success, all I can say is this: to imagine is everything!6.Before the birth of her first son, Mary Engelbreit's cardsfocused on ________.A. realityB. daily lifeC. fantasyD. dragons7.The New York show was so big that Engelbreit ________.A. couldn't walk through itB. couldn't believe itC. couldn't stay to the end of itD. couldn't understand it8.Engelbreit's cards were successful because ________.A. they were distinctive in styleB. they had a thank-you sentenceC. they had complicated detailsD. they were rich in color9. Reading Comprehension20%Section ADirections: In this section, you are going to read a passage with ten statements attached to it.Each statement contains information given in one of the paragraphs. Identify theparagraph from which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph morethan once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter. Answer the questions by writingthe corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. Why I Love ThanksgivingA Over the years, I have had the opportunity to visit nearly every state in the Union, and Inever cease to be amazed by our country's variety of people and places.I can step out of a subway into New York City, go around a Michigan blueberry farm, or dig for clams along a deserted beach in Maine. These places are very different but they represent the land I love.B One of the strongest similarities I have found in all of us Americans is the way we treatholidays. We all love holidays. They give us a reason to forget routine, to celebrate, and to make memories. What holiday gives us a better chance to do all of these things than Thanksgiving? Thanksgiving weekend is for most of us the longest, least interrupted weekend of the year. It is the ideal time for family and friends to come together again. It is also the most purely American of all holidays, because it celebrates the settling of our country by the Pilgrims over 350 years ago.C For me, Thanksgiving recalls all the things in life that I respond to most strongly and forwhich I am truly thankful. There is the simple beauty of the earth and the harvest time. There is the satisfaction that comes from the working of the crops. And there is the tradition of the day itself: the return to my family homes in the green hills of Maryland and Virginia, the delicious food, and the sharing of holiday rituals.D For as long as I can remember, my grandparents had a farm near Freeland, Maryland.Although I don't visit it often now, it was once the center of my life. I was five years old when I spent my first Thanksgiving at the farm. I remember the meal: the huge roast turkey, the red cranberry sauce, the wonderful mounds of just-whipped potatoes, and our family favorite pies — pumpkin and apple, fragrant with spices. That evening we gathered in the parlor and sang. “Singing for our supper,” we called it. To this day we sing for our supper in the Scott household on Thanksgiving. We always sing our favorite, “We Gather Together.”E In the Scott household, the Thanksgiving traditions have never waned; they've just changeda bit. Although I now live in New York City, I never spend Thanksgiving away from thefarm.Instead of at my grandparents' farm, it is now at my own farm in Virginia. Both mywife and I love to cook and we try to do extra special things on the holidays. In addition to our old traditional family favorites, we've added a molded tomato salad, an extremely rich sweet potato casserole, and a heavenly coconut and mandarin orange salad. But no matter how much the menu changes, no matter if we are serving roast goose instead of roast turkey or Southern pecan pie instead of apple, the sentiment remains the same. The spirit of the Thanksgiving holiday promotes life, friendship, closeness and family unity.Everyone who shares a Thanksgiving meal with us becomes a friend, and every friend becomes an honorary member of the family.F I like to believe that I can remember clearly every taste, every smell, every slightly off-keynote of our happy singing —everything except where all the Thanksgivings went.As I grow older, the celebrations seem to merge into one set of the best memories. I’ll always remember Thanksgivings as the times we ate good food, sang old-fashioned songs, and shared a lot of love with family and friends. May you all have the same kind of joy.46. All Americans love holidays.47. I’m often filled with wonder when I visit different places and meet various people in ourcountry.48. The spirit of Thanksgiving encourages life, friendship, closeness and family unity.49. Thanksgiving is the ideal time for the reunion of family and friends.50. The writer’s grandparents’ farm was once the center of the writer’s life.51. Thanksgiving reminds the writer of a lot of things which he loves and is thankful for.52. The writer and his wife now celebrate Thanksgiving at their own farm.53. The writer enjoys Thanksgiving and hopes everyone can have the same kind of joy.54. The writer enjoys the return to his family homes, the delicious food and the holiday rituals atThanksgiving.55. The celebrations of Thanksgiving become part of the writer’s best memories.Section BDirections:In this section, there is a passage with ten blanks. I usually did not think about the subjects of crime, poverty, or homelessness. As far as I knew, these things did not exist. The area around my school forced my eyes open as early as the first day of school. On the long bus ride through the city, I saw homeless dogs walking the streets. I also clearly recall seeing a homeless person picking through a trash can for the first time ever. The poverty of the area around my school made me see how truly lucky I was. I now began to appreciate everything which had been handed to me in life. In the long run, this led me to put a lot more faith in God because of all that He had given me. I started going to religious services more often. This also indirectly led to my involvement in the community around the school.Students' lives become enriched simply by attending an inner-city school. When a person is exposed to city life, many different advantages can be gained. For someone who had lived in the suburbs all his life, such as myself, a new style of living can be experienced. This alone expands one's views of life in general. The religious aspect of my life grew, I was easily able to get involved in community service projects, and I became much more aware of the dangers which exist in the city.
