We were moving to a new state after my husband had been out of work for many months and we had no money. In fact, we had to borrow money to reach our destination town. Anyway, it was my husband, two boys aged four and two, and myself, seven months pregnant (怀孕), in an old Volvo station wagon. We had been driving for two days in the middle of winter (that car’s heater didn’t work), and we had taken a route that was very desolate. There was nothing around for miles -no cars, buildings or signs of civilization. Suddenly, our car started losing power and the gauges(汽油表) went all out of order. We saw a light in the distance and managed to roll to a stop in front of this property that looked like a small simple house. Our cell phones had not gotten reception for ma ny miles, and it was freezing outside, so I didn’t know if we were going to make it out of this situation alive. My husband got out of the car to see if there was something he could do to get us rolling again, but it was not looking good. A short while later, a man came out of the house and spoke with my husband a bit before inviting us all into his home. He and his wife took us in, fed us, and made us feel at home as we struggled to find some way to get to our destination, which was still a few hours’ drive away. We were able to call a friend and get a ride, leaving our broken car behind, but not before the couple gave us food and water for our journey. One week later, this dear sweet couple pulled our car all the way to our place and refused to take anything in return, except for us to pay it forward-and we have, and will continue to do it forever.1. The loss of sight and hearing threw him into such sorrow that he tried a few times to put an end to his life. His family, especially his wife, did their best to tend and comfort him and finally he regained the will to live. One hot summer afternoon, he was taking a walk with a stick near his house when a thunderstorm started all at once. He stood under a large tree to avoid getting wet, but he was struck by the lightning. Witnesses thought he was dead but he woke up some 20 minutes later lying face down in muddy water at the base of the tree. He was trembling badly, but when he opened his eyes, he could hardly believe what he saw: a plough and a wall. When Mrs. Edwards came running up to him, shouting to their neighbors to call for help, he could see her and hear her voice for the first time in nearly ten years. The news of Robert regaining his sight and hearing quickly spread, and many doctors came to examine him. Most of them said that he regained his sight and hearing from the shock he got from the lightning. However, none of them could give a convincing answer as to why this should have happened. Just like the old saying goes, we should give a better assumption to the one than we think he was. But many of us always fail to do this. Take the situation of my class for example. Right at the beginning of the first semester when we were freshmen we all showed great favor to each other. And when there was an activity that needed some people to join, we would be willing to attend whether it was interesting or not. And we were really like brothers and sisters, and our class was just like a family, a warm family. But now, I feel tired of those meaningless activities not only because of the boring activities themselves but also the cool response of our classmates.I think the reasons why the passion of most classmates is so low may be as follows:To start with, many of us take part in more than one organization, which will certainly make us tired. Also, in the study fields, many of us may find that our courses are sometimes difficult to understand or comprehend, especially the specialized subjects. Moreover,“history” teaches us that if one does not study hard, it is possible to fail in the exams. So it is a big and good excuse to say that “I do really want to attend, but I have a lot of homework to do, so...”.Last but not least, some people believe that some of our leaders should not be regarded as a leader, maybe I should say we, as leaders, lost the reputation, support and trust of yours. At least I am the warmhearted one, although I cannot promise you that yo ur advice will be adopted surely, at least I will spare no effort to “give” you the right to be heard, and to serve you. Be active to show your talents and abilities and to create a better image of our class. Most important of all, work pains takingly for a better condition that we should have reached. 【语篇解读】昔日热衷于参加各类活动的雀跃而又温馨的场面已成为美好的回忆,如今取而代之的是冷漠。

AIt is obvious that doctors recognize obesity as a health problem. So why is it so hard for them to talk to their patients about it?The results of two surveys, one of primary care physicians and the other of patients, found that while most doctors want to helppatients lose weight and think it is their responsibility to do so, they often don’t know what to say.“So while doctors may tell patients they are overweight, the convers ation often ends there,” said Christine C. Ferguson, director of the Stop Obesity Alliance. “Patients are not told about the possibility of diabetes (a kind of disease),” she said. “And doctors don’t feel they have good information to give. They felt that they didn’t have adequate tools to address this problem. The lack of dialogue hurts patients, too. The patient survey, of over 1,000 adults, found that most overweight patients don’t even know that they’re too heavy. Only 39 percent of overweight people surveyed had ever been told by a health care provider that they were overweight.Of those who were told they were obese, 90 percent were alsotold by their doctors to lose weight, the survey found. In fact most have tried to lose weight and may have been successful in the past—and many are still trying, the survey found. And many understand that losing even a small amount of weight can have a positive impact on their health and reduce their risk of obesityrelated diseases like hypertension and diabetes.Dr. William Bestermann Jr., medical director of Holston Medical Group, in Kingsport, Tenn. , which ranks the 10th in obesity among metropolitan areas in the United States, said the dialogue had to be anongoing one and could not be dropped after just one mention of the problem. “If you’re to be successful with helping your patients lose weight, you have to talk to them at actually every visit about their progress, and find something to encourage them and coach them,” he said.He acknowledged that many doctors tend to be not optimistic.“Part of this is that there's this common belief, and doctors are burdened by it, too, that overweight people are weak-willed and just don’t have any willpower and are selfindulgent and all that business,” he said. “If you think that way, you’re not going to spend time having a productive conversation.”1. Without their doct ors’ constant coaching, there is little chance of their succeeding in losing weight.D. Most of them have just given up their hope of becoming less heavy.4. According to the passage, which factor contributes to the lack of dialogue between doctors and patients?A. Most doctors just never think of warning their patients about their weight problem.B. This is an international register of properties that are recognized as having outstanding cultural or natural values of international significance. Kakadu is the largest national park in Australia and is the second largest national park in the world. Kakaduis a biological wonderland, which is almost 8,000 square miles. The wildlife in Kakadu National Park includes over 280 kinds of birds, 60 kinds of native mammals, 55 kinds of freshwater fish, thousands of insects, and many reptiles, the most famous of which is the salt-water crocodile. All life in the park depends on water.Kakadu is not only home to the wildlife but the area is also famous for the longest continuous human culture that exists in the world. Kakadu contains one of the longest continuous records of rock art in the world, with around 5,000 paintings, with rock sites dating back 25,000 years. More than 1,000 sites have been recorded. Kakadu has been given double World Heritage status by the United Nations. It is one of only 17 of the 469 World heritage Areas listed for both natural and cultural values. It is Australia’s largest national park, but it isn’t just the size that surprises visitors—it is the sense of something very old and grand. Creation of the 500 km escarpment (悬崖) began 2,000 million years ago. Today those gorges are filled with rainforests, washed by waterfalls.Kakadu is one of the world’s special places. It is hard to pick the ideal time to visit Kakadu. In the wet season large areas of the park are closed to the public. It would not be possible to enter or exit from the park through the Kakadu Highway. Most of the people there agree that the best time to visit is at the end of the dry season. Some areas of Kakadu have restricted visiting times, and some are not open to the general public. Over 230 000 tourists visit Kakadu National Park every year. As you enter Kakadu National Park, you will be required to buy a permit. Part of this money is paid to the Traditional Owners of the land and the rest is given to the repairs of the park.6. Not to enter the national park without permission.D. Not to go there through the Kakadu Highway.C(London)—If it really is what’s on the inside that counts, then a lot of thin people might be in trouble. Some doctors now think that the internal fat surrounding important organs like the heart or liver could be as dangerous as the external fat which can be noticed more easily.“Being thin doesn’t surely mean you are not fat,” said Dr Jimmy Bell at Imperial College. Since 1994, Bell and his team have scanned nearly 800 people with MRI machines to create “fat maps” showing where people store fat.According to the result, people who keep their weight through diet rather than exercise are likely to have major deposits of internal fat, even if they are slim.Even people with normal Body Mass Index scores can have surprising levels of fat deposits inside. Of the women, as many as 45 percent of those with normal BMI scores (20 to 25) actually had too high levels of internal fat. Among men, the percentage was nearly 60 percent.According to Bell, people who are fat on the inside are actually on the edge of being fat. They eat too many fatty and sugary foods, but they are not eating enough to be fat. Scientists believe we naturallystore fat around the belly first, but at some point, the body may start storing it elsewhere.Doctors are unsure about the exact dangers of internal fat, but some think it has something to do with heart disease and diabetes. They want to prove that internal fat damages the body’s communication systems. The good news is that internal fat can be easily burned off through exercise or even by improving your diet. “If you want to be healthy, there is no short cut. Exercise has to be an important part of your lifestyle,” Bell said.11. What is this piece of news mainly about?A. Thin people may be fat inside.B. Internal fat is of no importance.C. Internal fat leads to many diseases.D. Thin people also have troubles.12. Doctors have found _____.A. the exact dangers of internal fatB. internal fat is the cause of heart disease and diabetesC. being slim is not dangerous at allD. being slim doesn’t mean you are not fat inside13. According to the passage, which of the following is WRONG?A. Exercise can help to reduce the internal fat.B. People can get rid of internal fat by improving diet.C. Men are more likely to have too much internal fat.D. People with heart disease all have internal fat.14. From the last paragraph, we can find that _____.A. whether internal fat can lead to disease has been provedB. exercise plays in important role in people’s life for keeping healthyC. thin people usually have internal fat even if they are slimD. it is easier to burn off internal fat than external fat15. The underlined part in the last paragraph means _____.A. a long roadB. an easy wayC. a clear differenceD. a short distanceDFor years, there has been a bias(偏见)against science among clinical psychologists. In a two-year analysis to be published in November in Perspectives on Psychological Science, psychologists led by Timothy B. Baker of the University of Wisconsin charge that manyclinical psychologists fail to “provide the treatments for which there is the strongest evidence of effectiveness” and “give more weight to thei r personal experiences than to science.” As a result, patients have no guarantee that their “treatment will be informed by …science.” Walter Mischel of Columbia University is even crueler in his judgment. “The disconnect between what clinical psychologists do and what science has discovered is an extreme embarrassment,” he told me, and “there is a widening gap between clinical practice and science.”The “widening” reflects the great progress that psychological research has made in identifying the most effective treatments. Thanks to strict clinical trials, we now know that teaching patients to think about their thoughts in new, healthier ways and to act on those new ways of thinking are effective against depression, panic disorder and other problems, with multiple trials showing that these treatments—the tools of psychology—bring more lasting benefits than drugs. You wouldn’t know this if you sought help from a typicalclinical psychologist. Although many treatments are effective, relatively few psychologists learn or practice them. Why in the world not? For one thing, says Baker, clinical psychologists are “very doubtful about the role of science” and “lack solid science training”. Also, one third of patients get better no matter what treatment (if any) they have, “and psychologists rememberthese successes, believing, wrongly, that they are the result of the treatment.”When faced with evidence that treatments they offer are not supported by science, clinical psychologists argue that they know better than some study that works. A 2008 study of 591 psychologists in private practice found that they rely more on their own and colleagues’ experience than on science when deciding how to treat a patient. If they keep on this path as insurance companies demand evidence-based medicine, warns Mischel, psychology will “discredit itself.”16. Many clinical psychologists fail to provide the most effective treatments because _____.A. they are unfamiliar with their patientsB. they believe in science and evidenceC. they depend on their colleagues’ helpD. they rely on their personal experiences17. The widening gap between clinical practice and science is due to _____.A. the cruel judgment by Walter MischelB. the fact that most patients get better after being treatedC. the great progress that has been made in psychological researchD. the fact that patients prefer to take drugs rather than have other treatments18. How do clinical psychologists respond when charged thattheir treatments are not supported by science?A. They feel embarrassed.B. They try to defend themselves.C. They are disappointed.D. They doubt their treatments.19. In Mischel’s opinion, psychology will ______.A. destroy its own reputation if no improvement is madeB. develop faster with the support of insurance companiesC. work together with insurance companies to provide better treatmentD. become more reliable if insurance companies won’t demand evidence-based medicine20. What is the purpose of this passage?A. To show the writer’s disapproval of clinical psychologists.B. To inform the readers of the risks of psychological treatments.C. To explain the effectiveness of treatments by clinical psychologists.D. To introduce the latest progress of medical treatment in clinical psychology.参考答案1—5 BAABC 6—10 DBCAB11—15 ADDBB 16—20 DCBAA。

高中英语真题:2017高考英语一轮阅读理解技能训练题
2017高考英语一轮阅读理解技能训练题阅读下列四篇短文,从每小题后所给的A,B,C或D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
Plants can’t communicate by moving or making sounds, as m ost animals do. Instead, plants produce volatile compounds, c hemicals that easily change from a liquid to a gas. A flower’s sweet smell, for example, comes from volatile compounds tha t the plant produces to attract insects such as bugs and bees. Plants can also detect volatile compounds produced by other plants. A tree under attack by hungry insects, for instance, ma y give off volatile compounds that let other trees know about t he attack. In response, the other trees may send off chemical s to keep the bugs away—or even chemicals that attract the bugs’ natural enemies. Now scientists have created a quick way to understand what plants are saying: a chemical sensor(传感器) called an electronic nose. The“e-nose” can tell compounds that crop plants make when they’re attacked. Scientists say the e-nose could help quickly detect whether plants are being eaten by insects. But today the only way to detect such insects is tovisually inspect individual plants. This is a challenging task fo r managers of greenhouses, enclosed gardens that can hous e thousands of plants. The research team worked with an e-nose that recognizes volatile compounds. Inside the device, 1 3 sensors chemically react with volatile compounds. Based on these interactions, the e-nose gives off electronic signals that the scientists analyze usi ng computer software. To test the nose, the team presented it with healthy leaves fro m cucumber, pepper and tomato plants, all common greenho use crops. Then the scientists collected samples of air around damaged leaves from each type of crop. These plants had be en damaged by insects, or by scientists who made holes in th e leaves with a hole punch(打孔器).The e-nose, it turns out, could identify healthy cucumber, peper and tomato plants based on the volatile compounds they produce. It could also identify tomato leaves that had been damaged. But even more impressive, the device could tell which type of damage—by insects or with a hole punch—had been done to the tomato leaves. With some fine-tuning, a device like the e-nose could one day be used in greenhouses to quickly spot h armful bugs, the researchers say. A device like this could also be used to identify fruits that are perfectly ripe and ready to pi ck and eat, says Natalia Dudareva, a biochemist at Purdue U niversity in West Lafayette, Ind. who studies smells of flowers and plants. Hopefully, scientists believe, the device could bring large benefits to greenhouse managers in the near future.1. We learn from the text that plants communicate with each o ther by .A. making some soundsB. waving their leavesC. producing some chemicalsD. sending out electronic signals2. What did the scientists do to find out if the e-nose worked?A. They presented it with all common crops.B. They fixed 13 sensors inside the device.C. They collected different damaged leaves.D. They made tests on damaged and healthy leaves.3. According to the writer, the most amazing thing about the e -nose is that it can .A. pick out ripe fruitsB. spot the insects quicklyC. distinguish different damages to the leavesD. recognize unhealthy tomato leaves4. We can infer from the last paragraph that the e-nose .A. is unable to tell the smell of flowersB. is not yet used in greenhousesC. is designed by scientists at PurdueD. is helpful in killing har mful insects【参考答案】1—4、CDCB阅读理解。

You’re sitt ing on the train home and the person opposite you yawns(打哈欠). Suddenly, you’re yawning with him, though you’re not tired. This phenomenon confused scientists for years until a recent study found that people tend to sympathize with fellow humans. Supporting this claim was the discovery that those children who were unable to form normal emotional ties with others did not experience contagious(有感染力的) yawning, which showed that humans communicate regularly without words.Hugo Critchley, a neuroscientist, has conducted an experiment recently, which will prove that happiness and sadness can spread like the common cold. According to Critchley, our mind and body are in constant exchange about how we’re feeling. “Emotions are closely linked with states of internal(内部的) responses,” he explained. “There are also more visible changes in our gestures and facial expressions. When we’re in a group, these signals can spread to another person. For example, there’s the obvious tendency to smile when smiled at and there are l ess obvious changes that reflect emotions of surprise, anger or sadness such as a change in our heart rate and blood pressure.”Hugo Critchley further explained, “Our bodies synchronise and when we like the other person, we even copy his behavior. Next tim e you chat with a friend, take note of how you’re sitting—it’s pretty likely that you will be the same. Scientists believe it’s our way of telling each other that we’re partners. Through body language, humans give each other very subtle(微妙的) but clear signals that show emotions.”So, what less ons can we learn from this? “Spend time with happy people—otherwise your health could suffer,” said Critchley. “When we’re sad, our body goes into fight or flight mode. But when we’re happy, our body works normally and we feel relaxed and positive. So we look bright, our skin glows, we feel healthy and it affects everyone around us.”1. According to Hugo Critchley, .A. emotions are as visible as facial expressionsB. we yawn more frequently when we have a coldC. emotions are connected with states of internal responsesD. the change of blood pressure is not linked with the change of emotions2. The underlined word “synchronise” in Paragraph 4 means “”.A. move slowlyB. change rapidlyC. relax temporarilyD. respond accordingly3. From the passage we can learn .A. sadness is as contagious as happinessB. anger is less contagious than friendlinessC. surprise is more contagious than smileD. surprise is the most contagious among emotions4. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?A. Emotions have delicate influence on fellow humans.B. Children like copying the actions of fellow humans.C. Scientists are still confused about contagious yawning.D. People tend to communicate more with body language.【参考答案】1—4、CDBA黑龙江省大庆市喇中2016高考英语阅读练习——新闻报道类A German study suggests that people who were too optimistic about their future actually faced greater risk of disability or death within 10 years than those pessimists( 悲观者)who expected their future to be worse. The paper, published this March in Psychology and Aging, examined health and welfare surveys from roughly 40,000 Germans between ages 18 and 96. The surveys were conducted every year from 1993 to 2003.Survey respondents (受访者) were asked to estimate their present and future life satisfaction on a scale of 0 to 10, among other questions. The researchers found that young adults (age 18 to 39) routinely overestimated their future life satisfaction, while middle-aged adults (age 40 to 64) more accurately predicted how they would feel in the future. Adults of 65 and older, however, were far more likely to underestimate their future life satisfaction. Not only did they feel more satisfied than they thought they would, the older pessimists seemed to suffer a lower ratio (比率) of disability and death for the study period.“We observed that being too optimistic in predicting a better future than actually observed was associated with a greater risk of disability and a greater risk of death within the following decade,” wrote Frieder R. Lang, a professor at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.Lang and his colleagues believed that people who were pessimistic about their future may be more careful about their actions than people who expected a rosy future.“Seeing a dark future may encourage positive evaluations of the actual self and may contribute to taking improved precautions (预防措施),” the authors wrote.Surprisingly, compared with those in poor health or who had low incomes, respondents who enjoyed good health or income were associated with expecting a greater decline. Also, the researchers said that higher income was related to a greater risk of disability. The authors of the study noted that there were limitations to their conclusions. Illness, medical treatment and personal loss could also have driven health outcomes. However, the researchers said a pattern was clear. “We found that from early to late adulthood, individuals adapt their expectations of future life satisfaction from optimistic, to accurate, to pessimistic,” the authors concluded.【小题1】According to the study, who made the most accurate prediction of their future lifesatisfaction?A.Optimistic adults.B.Middle-aged adults.C.Adults in poor health.D.Adults of lower income.【小题2】Pessimism may be positive in some way because it causes people ______.A.to fully enjoy their present lifeB.to estimate their contribution accuratelyC.to take measures against potential risksD.to value health more highly than wealth【小题3】How do people of higher income see their future?A.They will earn less money.B.They will become pessimistic.C.They will suffer mental illness.D.They will have less time to enjoy life.【小题4】What is the clear conclusion of the study?A.Pessimism guarantees chances of survival.B.Good financial condition leads to good health.C.Medical treatment determines health outcomes.D.Expectations of future life satisfaction decline with age.阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

Eating too much fatty food, exercising too little and smoking can raise your future risk of heart disease. But there is another factor that can cause your heart problems more immediately: the air you breathe.Previous studies have linked high exposure (暴露) to environmental pollution to an increased risk of heart problems, but two analyses now show that poor air quality can lead to heart attack or stroke (中风) within as little as a few hours after exposure. In one review of the research, scientists found that people exposed to high levels of pollutants (污染物) were up to 5% more likely to suffer a heart attack within days of exposure than those with lower exposure. A separate study of stroke patients showed that even air that the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers to be of “moderate” (良好) quality and relatively safe for our health can raise the risk of stroke as much as 34% within 12 to 14 hours of exposure. The authors of both studies stress that these risks are relatively small for healthy people and certainlymodest compared with other risk factors such as smoking and high blood pressure. However, it is important to be aware of these dangers because everyone is exposed to air pollution regardless of lifestyle choices. So stricter regulation by the EPA of pollutants may not only improve environmental air quality but could also become necessary to protect public health.1. The latest research suggests that the key factor separating geniuses from the merely accomplished is not I. Q. , a generally bad predictor of success. Instead, it’s purposeful practice. Top performers spend more hours practising their craft. If you wanted to picture how a typical genius might develop, you’d take a girl who possessed a slightly above average language ability. It wouldn’t have to be a big talent, just enough so that she might gain some sense of distinction. Then you would want her to meet, say, a novelist, who coincidentally shared some similar qualities. Maybe the writer was from the same town, had the same family background, or, shared the same birthday. This contact would give the girl a vision of her future self. It would give her some idea of a fascinating circle she might someday join. It would also help if one of her parents died when she was 12, giving her a strong sense of insecurity and fuelling a desperate need for success. Armed with this ambition, she would read novels and life stories of writers without end. This would give her a primary know-ledge of her field. She’d be able to see new writing in deeper ways and quickly understand its inner workings. Then she would practise writing. Her practice would be slow, painstaking and error-focused. By practising in this way, she delays the automatizing process. Her mind wants to turn conscious, newly learned skills into unconscious, automatically performed skills. By practising slowly, by breaking skills down into tiny parts and repeating, she forces the brain to internalize a better pattern of performance. Then she would find an adviser who would provide a constant stream of feedback, viewing her performance from the outside, correcting the smallest errors, pushing her to take on tougher challenges. By now she is redoing problems—how do I get characters into a room—dozens and dozens of times. She is establishing habits of thought she can call upon in order to understand or solve future problems. The primary quality our young writer possesses is not some mysterious genius. It’s the ability to develop a purposeful, laborious and boring practice routine. The latest research takes some of the magic out of great achievement. But it underlines a fact that is often neglected. Publicdiscussion is affected by genetics and what we’re “hard-wired” to do. And it’s true that genes play a role in our capabilities. But the brain is also very plastic. We construct ourselves through behaviour.1. The passage mainly deals with .A. the function of I. Q. in cultivating a writerB. the relationship between genius and successC. the decisive factor in making a geniusD. the way of gaining some sense of distinction2. By reading novels and writers’ stories, the girl could.A. come to understand the inner structure of writingB. join a fascinating circle of writers somedayC. share with a novelist her likes and dislikesD. learn from the living examples to establish a sense of security3. In the girl’s long painstaking trainin g process, .A. her adviser forms a primary challenging force to her successB. her writing turns into an automatic pattern of performanceC. she acquires the magic of some great achievementsD. she comes to realize she is “hard-wired” to write4. What can be concluded from the passage?A. A fuelling ambition plays a leading role in one’s success.B. A responsible adviser is more important than the knowledge of writing.C. As to the growt h of a genius, I. Q. doesn’t matter, but just his/her efforts.D. What really matters is what you do rather than who you are.【参考答案】1—4、CABD阅读理解。

My oldest child, Emma, just returned to campus after a long holiday break to finish up her last period of college. These days, friends and family have begun flooding me with one question: What is she going to do after graduation? The job market is, after all, awfully tough. Just this month the Federal Reserve Bank published a study showing that “recent graduates are increasingly working in low-paid jobs or working part-time.” The b right spot, according to the study, is for students who majored(主修) in STEM — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — areas in which recent graduates “have tended to do relatively well”.But Emma is a student of the humanities(人文) at a small college. She’s an American Studies major with a focus on the politics and culture of food. For quite a while, I think her field of study is so fashionable right now that I’m not the least bit worried she will find a good job. Yet the more I’ve thought about it, the more I’ve decided to be honest. “I’m not sure what Emma is going to do,” I now say. “But she’s gotten a great education and has really found her interest. —and I know those things will serve her well over the course of her life.”Nowadays, more and more universities and colleges are being measured by the salaries of their recent graduates. In this climate, encouraging your kid to study the humanities, seems, at best, unwise or, at worst, unconcerned with earning a living. But a college is not a vocational(职业) school. And promoting STEM subjects should not be society’s only answer to helping the next generation grow in a competitive world. From the beginning, we never urged Emma to pick a college or a major with an eye on its expected return on money, as more and more families are doing. To Emma, what really matters will be something that we may not be able to measure for quite a long time: Emma’s contribution to the world and how happy she is in it.1. The author’s friends and family_________.A. are worried about Emma’s safetyB. have been worrying about the floodC. are concerned about Emma’s futureD. are worried about the job market2. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?A. The number of the graduates is increasing.B. STEM graduates can be better employees.C. STEM graduates are in relatively greater demand.D. More and more graduates like to do a part-time job.3. Why did Emma choose a major in the humanities?A. Because she is interested in it.B. Because her mother told her to.C. Because it is increasingly popular.D. Because she wants further education.4. According to the author, what matters most in choosing a major is that_________.A. it should be among the STEMB. it should be fashionable and interestingC. it should allow a good job and a high salaryD. it should bring achievements and happiness参考答案1—4、 CCAD黑龙江省大庆市喇中2016高考英语阅读练习——新闻报道类Last Friday a storm swept through two villages in the New Territories, destroying fourteen homes. Experts suggest a possible model way may be reinventing a “garden city”.China's megacities are bursting at the borders and t he country is now undergoing the quickest and biggest urbanization in the history of mankind. It is estimated that by 2025, China will have 400 million more people living in its cities, raising its urban population to 900 million. Besides, new satellite towns are mushrooming on the urban fringes while city ring roads are rippling outwards into the countryside at amazing speed. Satellite maps collected by Professor Joshua Bolchover at the University of Hong Kong bring the problem sharply into focus. They track the changing ruralurban framework in the past 30 years, and suggest that cities are cruelly destroying surrounding rural land and rapidly reducing the amount of arable(可耕种的)land, which gives way to new residential blocks, new industrial zones, new financial centers and the other inevitable signs and signatures of economic growth. This, however, is not sustainable growth pattern, especially when China has the world's largest population to feed. So concerned urban planners are starting to note the social and physical effects of diaspora(大移居)when replaced rural communities are forced into the cities. On the other hand, a trend of thought is gradually taking shape and this is the concept of the “garden city”, a combination of country and city that is being proposed by architects and city planners. Hua Li, from Tao Architects, is among the many professionals with such a voice. His argument is supported by a longterm study on this subject. As Hua says, the answer is to preserve patches of productive farmland within urban boundaries. Less transportation means we have fresh agricultural products at lower costs and less carbon emission in the city. And urban farmland can also be showcased for agricultural tourism and education. The concept is already practiced at grass roots level.Agriculture has gone into the air, up to roof and balcony in some communities in the cities. It's common to see organic “hanging garden” on the roof of some traditional courtyard home. According to some people, the rooftop project translates into practical benefits, such as safe, nutritious vegetables and a cooler home in summer. Some say thanks to the tomatoes they plant that are natural insect killers, there're fewer mosquitoes. Apart from these, it also contributes to better bonding with neighbors. Zhang, a doctor in Beijing, began creating his hanging garden five years ago. Since his garden became home to 30 kinds of vegetables and fruit—all enough to feed his family, neighbors have enjoyed dropping by for a relaxing chat or just to see how well the lovely vegetables and fruit are growing. Although people like Zhang are still rare and the greening of roof space with vegetables and fruit takes skill and energy, with more positive media exposure and advanced technology there is the prospect that garden city will become common practice in the near future. By then, cities will no longer look so gray when seen from the satellites.【语篇解读】中国的城市化进程不断加快,这是一个我们不得不面对的现实。

Scientists have found what look like caves on Mars(火星), and say they could be protecting life from the planet’s terrible environment. The first caves discovered beyond the Earth appear as seven mysterious black dots on the pictures sent back by NASA’s Mars Odyssey orbiter. Each as large as a football field, they may be openings into natural caves below the Martian surface.“If the re is life on Mars, there is a good chance you’d find it in caves,” said Jut Wynne, one of the researchers who noticed the features while working on a US Geological Survey Mars Cave Detection Program.Jonathan Clarke, a geologist with the Mars Society of Australia, yesterday described the discovery as exciting. One photo taken at night by an infrared imager(红外线成像器) showed one hole to be unusually warm, suggesting hot air trapped during the day is flowing out.“I said:‘Wow, that’s a cave. ’” Dr. Clarke said excitedly. “People have been looking for these for a long time;now w e have found them.”He agreed such caves would be perfect places to hunt for life escaping from the bitterly cold,radiation-soaked(充满辐射的),dry surface.“Tiny drops o f wate r could collect inside,” he said. “If there are gases coming out, they could provide energy for a whole range of bacteria. A cave is also a protection from radiation; thesurface of Mars is exposed to high levels of space radiation. The caves probably formed when tube-shaped lava flows(管状岩浆流) spread across the planet long ago. The outside of the tubes cooled, forming solid walls, while something hotter inside allowed the remaining lava to flow out, forming caves.”1. What does the passage mainly talk about?A. But I don’t feel proud about the number of women and girls where I’m from who are still being unable to enjoy the right for an education.“I have taught many students —including Malaya, the young education activist who was shot in the head as travelling to school in Pakistan after campaigning for gir ls’ education. Among them I see the dignity that education can offer. This is why I have long been devoted to teaching, and why I am doing what I can to make sure that all girls have the chance to go to school.“At the Khushaal school and college in Mi ngora, many girls are prevented from going to school because of poverty and fights. However, the most common reasons for girls not attending classes are cultural. People fear that females will become too independent if educated. Instead, parents prefer to marry off girls early. Girls and young women are considered a financial burden if left dependent on their parents.”“In the school where I have been teaching for over ten years, I have seen how this discrimination plays out. Parents regard an educated and independent female as being too clever for her own. Even if parents agree to give a girl an education, a limit is set to the number of years for her to attend classes and it is common for girls to make it through only primary school. This is why I have been working tirelessly to change these damaging views and cultural practices. These are crimes against humanity (人道),which I have no choice but to strongly accuse of.”“Malala was right to fight for her education.” says Mariam, who will be in New York with UNESCO (联合国教科文组织), delivering a speech calling for world leaders to make sure every childgets a chance to go to school.【小题1】What does Mariam take pride in?A.Her dignity from education.B.Her lifelong devotion to teaching.C.Her hometown with fantastic scenery.D.Her experience as a speech maker.【小题2】What is the major reason to prevent girls from going to school?A.The constant fights across the country.B.The lack of financial support for schooling.C.The limited time allowed to attend classes.D.The traditional views on females’ social role.【小题3】What will Mariam appeal for in her speech?A.Accusing of the shooting of the schoolgirl.B.Sex balance among children of school age.C.Equal access for boys and girls to education.D.Independence of girls with a good education.【小题4】Which of the following is true about Mariam?A.Malala event motivated her to work years for children.B.She spoke in favour of Malala’s action in the interview.C.A press invited her to attend a conference in New York.D.She started a campaign with Malala for females’ freedom.阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

Many people influenced various aspects of my life, based on their personal characteristics, accomplishments, and values. I have been fortunate to have had numerous teachers and professors who I respect for their patience and intelligence. There are artists that have inspired me by their natural talents and original creativity. I value many political leaders, who have inspired me by their contributions to society, and their ability to change our futures. But of all the people I have known in my life, the person I admire most is my father. As the youngest girl in my family, I always considered myself to be “Daddy’s little girl”. While I grew up, it always made me sad to see so many of my friends and neighbors without a father or father-like figure around. This helped me appreciate how my father always takes an interest in his children’s lives. In every aspect of my life my father continuously pushes me to excel, so I could accomplish my work outstandingly among my people. Whenever I feel like giving up, or have a question or a concern, I know I can always call on him for advice. From him I have also learned that sometimes you have to put others’ needs ahead of your own, but you should make sure you are not taken advantage of by others. His strength seems to be unbreakable during hard times, and he is extremely determined to accomplish anything he sets his mind on, no matter how tiny it is. I highly respect him for how he stands up for what he believes in, and will never back down. I have always admired his open mind, compassion for people, and sense of understanding. He is a very reserved man, but to everybody’s surprise, he has a great sense of humor, and always knows how to put a smile on the faces of his wife, his children and his friends.Living in his affection and instruction, I am very proud of my father. Should doctors ever lie to benefit their patient—to speed recovery or to cover the coming of death? In medicine as in law, government, and other lines of work, the requirements of honesty often seem dwarfed (变矮小)by greater needs:the need to protect form brutal news or to uphold a promise of secrecy;to advance the public interest. What should doctors say,for example,to a 46yearold man coming in for a routine physical checkup j ust before going on vacation with his family who, though he feels in perfect health,is found to have a form of cancer that will cause him to die wit hin six months? Is it best to tell him the truth? If he asks, should the doctors reject that he is ill,or minimize the gravity of the illness?Should they at least hide the truth until after the family vacatio n?Doctors face such choices often. At times, they see important reasons to lie for the patient's own sake;in their eyes, such lies sharply form selfserving ones.Studies show that mo st doctors sincerely believe that the seriously ill patients do no t want to know the truth about their condition, and that informing them risks destroying their hope,so that they may recover more slowly,or deteriorate (恶化)faster, perhaps even commit suicide (自杀).But other studies show that, contrary to the belief of many physicians;a great majority of patients do want to be told the truth, even about serious illness, and feel cheated when they learn that they have been misled. We are also learning that truthful information, humanely conveyed (传达),helps patients cope with illness:help them tolerate pain better, need less medicine, and even recover faster after surgery. There is urgent need to debate this issue openly. Not only in m edicine, but in other profession as well, practitioners may find themselves repeatedly in difficulty wher e serious consequences (后果)seem avoidable only through deception(欺骗).Yet the public has every reason to know professional de ception, for such practices are peculiarly likely to become deeply roote d,to spread, and to trust.Neither in medicine, nor in law, government,or the social sciences can there be comfort in the old saying ,“What you don't know can't hurt you.”1.According to the author's opinion, lies ________.A.can benefit the patientsB.can help the patients to recoveryC.can do nothing to the patients' illnessD.can not benefit the patients答案:A 细节理解题。

Which are you more likely to have with you at any given moment—your cellphone or your wallet? Soon you may be able to throw your wallet away and pay for things with a quick wave of your smart phone over an electronic scanner. In January, Starbucks announced that customers could start using their phones to buy coffee in 6, 800 of its stores. This is the first pay-by-phone practice in the U. S. , but we’re likely to see more wireless payment alternatives as something called near field communication(NFC) gets into America’s consumer electronics. Last December, some new smart phones which contain an NFC chip were introduced to the public.Already in use in parts of Asia and Europe, NFC allows shoppers to wave their phones a few inches above a payment terminal—a contact-free system built for speed and convenience. But before NFC becomes widely adopted in the U. S. , a few problems need to be worked out, like who will get to collect the profitable transaction (交易) fees. Although some credit card providers have been experimenting with wave-and-pay systems that use NFC-enabled credit cards, cellphone service providers may try to muscle their way into the point-of-sale(POS) market. Three big cellphone service providers have formed a joint venture (合资企业) that will go into operation over the next 15 months. Its goal is “to lead the U. S. payments industry from cards to mobile phones.”The other big NFC issue, apart from how payments will be processed, is security. For instance, what’s to stop a thief from digitally pickpocketing you? “We’re still not at the point where an attacker can just brush against you in a crowd and steal all the money out of your phone,” says Jimmy Shah, a mobile-security researcher. “Users may also be able to set transaction limits, perhaps requiring a password to be entered for larger purchases.”Still uneasy about this digital-wallet business? Keep in mind that if you lose your smart phone, it can be located on a map and remotely disabled. Plus, your phone can be password protected. Your wallet isn’t.1. What is predicted to happen in the U. S. ?A. The expansion of cellphone companies.B. The boom of pay-by-phone business.C. The disappearance of credit cards.D. The increase of Starbucks sales.2. The NFC technology can be used to .A. ensure the safety of shoppersB. collect transaction fees easilyC. make purchase faster and simplerD. improve the quality of cellphones3. Three cellphone service providers form a joint venture to .A. strengthen their relationshipB. get a share in the payments industryC. sell more cellphonesD. test the NFC technology4. According to the passage, what can users do if they lose their smart phones?A. Stop the functioning of their phones.B. Set up a password.C. Get all the money out of their phones.D. Cancel large purchases.【参考答案】1—4、 BCBA阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

Of course everyone knows that exercise is good for the body. However, studies have shown that when exercise is performed in groups, it's not only great for improving physical health but for psychological health. It's an opportunity to be social, release endorphins(内啡肽), and improve your strength. Additionally, group exercise creates a community feel and the shared common goal motivates participants to work hard. The instrumental support of taking on a fitness journey with others proves more effective than going to the gym alone.Another beneficial aspect of group exercise is the informational support participants receive from the instructor. Many people fear the gym because they feel lost and don't want to embarrass themselves. If you feel you can relate, then group training is an even better option for you. It's a great opportunity to learn more about fitness through the clear instruction and supervision (监管) of a fitness instructor. If you're tired of wandering around the gym wasting time and becoming bored, you can attend an upbeat group fitness class that'll keep your workout on track. Don't let fitness frighten you!If you're serious about wanting to live a healthy lifestyle, it's extremely important to surround yourself with people who'll provide you with the proper emotional support. I wouldn't scold anyone for deciding to party on weekends and in turn I wouldn't expect anyone to give offence to me for focusing on my health. Surround yourself with people who uplift, encourage and understand you! Make fitness even more fun by trying something new or any group fitness class, with a friend. Plan to go for a jog together. Then try a fun healthy restaurant or fresh juice bar! I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there's a big difference between “being a writer” and writing. In most cases these individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a typewriter. “You've got to want to write,” I say to them, “not want to be a writer.”The reality is that writing is a lonely, private andpoor-paying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in the U.S. Coast Guard to become a freelance writer (自由撰稿者), I had not prospects atall. What I did have was a friend who found me my room in a New York apartment building. It didn't even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used manual typewriter and felt like a genuine writer. After a year or so, however, I still hadn’t gotten a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that barely made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn’t going to be one of those people who die wondering. What if ? I would keep putting my dream to the test even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the Shadowlandof hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there.12. “I’m not su re what Emma is going to do,” I now say. Experts suggest a possible model way may be reinventing a “garden city”.China's megacities are bursting at the borders and the country is now undergoing the quickest and biggest urbanization in the history of mankind. They track the changing ruralurban framework in the pas t 30 years, and suggest that cities are cruelly destroying surrounding rural land and rapidly reducing the amount of arable(可耕种的)land, which gives way to new residential blocks, new industrial zones, new financial centers and the other inevitable signs and signatures of economic growth.
