The database consists of more than 100,000 questions to test reading comprehension. In early January this year the Alibaba AI software machine scored 82.44 on the test while humans scored 82.304. Besides, computers and AI have already defeated humans, for example in games such as chess. However, it seemed that language skills were superior in humans as machines find languages hard to master.A large number of call center employees, often in developing countries, may be out of work soon if the AI robots are cheaper and as effective as human labor. Soon when you phone a company for information the conversation will go like this: “ We are sorry but all our robots are busy right now. We value your call. Please stay on the line until a robot is free to serve you. There are just 12 callers ahead of you.” A robot will serve you some popular tunes while you wait.Si Luo, who is a chief scientist of natural language processing at Alibaba’s AI research group noted that questions such as “What causes rain?” can now be answered with a high degree of accuracy by robots. Si Luo said, “ We believe the foundational technology can be gradually applied to a lot of applications such as customer service, museum tutorials, and online responses to inquiries from patients, freeing human efforts in a new way.”Si Luo’s team is working closely with Ali Xiaomi, a mobile customer service chatbot. Ali Xiaomi can becustomized to be used on Alibaba’s platforms such as Taobao and Tmall. The new AI robots could answer consumers’ questions as they did the Stanford questions. The robots would look for the answers from prepared information. However, there are limits to what the system will be able to do. If questions do not have clear-cut answers, or the questions asked are too unclear or ungrammatical, the robot may not be able to deal with them.4. What can we learn about the Alibaba AI software machine?A. It has been tested in some areas.B. It has become popular since January.C. It has offered a special learning style.D. It has made people interested in reading.5. What does the example in paragraph 3 show about the AI robots?A. They should have better language skills.B. They may replace humans in some fields.C. They need to be customized to serve customers.D. They will be widely used in developing countries.6. How does Si Luo feel about the foundational technology?A. Doubtful.B. Worried.C. Curious.D. Confident.7. What can we infer from the lastparagraph about Ali Xiaomi?A. It needs to improve in some ways.B. It is connected with another system.C. It is a platform to show good service.D. It can answer any questions accordingly.CTwo young brothers fromMalden.Massachusettswere in the spotlight Thursday after being named “heroes" by a national organization that recognizes young people doing great things. For the Bennett brothers, the goal of their work is nothing less than helping researchers find a cure for cancer. And their inspiration came from a friend.Thirteen-year-old Hany Bennett and his nine-year-old brother Heath run their business out of their family kitchen. "We're making lip balm(润唇膏),"Harry says. They got the idea two years ago when their friend, Timmy, was diagnosed(诊断)with cancer. brothers wanted to do something. "We've raised S 15,000/ Heath says. And with the great optimism of children, they don't just want to help;they wont to win. We want to find a cure. We want to help doctors find a cure, Harry explains, The brothers are also Gelding a team for the Light theNight Walk, to fight cancer."I think it's great to raise money and help people who have cancer," says Heath. Their parents play a big role as well, but it's the boys who provide the most enthusiasm with a message we can all learn from. "If you want to do something... do it," Harry says. "I just feel very glad that we're helping. It feels very good”,adds Heath.Harn and Heath just received the S 10,000 Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes. Hwy intend to save some of il for college, invest some of it in their business and give the rest to charity. And their friend Timmy? "He's doing great. He's all better, Harry says.8. Two headsare better than one.C. Young kids can make a big difference.D. The longest journey begins with the first step.DGrowing up as kids we are told to share our toys and notto be selfish. We also live in an age when discussing our feelings is encouraged. But when does it all become too much? With new crazes trending all the time, such as dance challenges and wearing a carpet as a dress, the question is: when can sharing become oversharing on social media?“Oversharing” has become associated with social media, but it isn'texclusiveto this platform. Imagine you head to a party and meet x k w someone. Within five minutes they have revealed private details about their life. While some of us may try to escape these people, according to marriage advisor Carolyn Cole, this form of oversharing could come from a strong desire to connect with someone. But how does this translate to social media?Dr. Christopher Hand, a lecturer in cyberpsychology (网络心理学),says the more details people disclose, the less sympathy we express when things go wrong. It seems that searching for sympathy by oversharing is generally considered as negative rather than the cry for help it could really be.However, Dr. Hand's research also seems to suggest that the more we post on a platform, the more socially attractive we become-provided that the posts that we bang out are positive. Even back in 2015, Gwendolyn Seidman PhD said that we should avoid complaining and being negative online. We should also avoid showing off, especially about our love lives. It makes sense-if your date is going “that well", would you really have time to share a photo with text? So, how can you know if you are oversharing? Well, why not ask your friends in real life. They would probably be happy to tell you if your posts about your breakfast or your complaints about your lack of money really are too much.12. What does the underlined word “exclusive" in paragraph 2 mean?A. Unique.B. Similar.C. Relevant.D. Fundamental.13. Why do some people prefer oversharing at parties?A. To draw others' attention.B. To satisfy others' curiosity.C. To remove negative feelings.D. To develop good relationships.14. Which of the following may Dr. Hand agree with?A. Sharing more details online can attract more sympathy.B. Oversharing negative experiences is equal to crying for help.C. Sharing negative posts can't help one become socially attractive.D. Oversharing isn't likely to happen online when things go wrong.15. According to the text, what should be avoided for online sharing?A. Reflecting on past bad manners.B. Showing a great many expensive goods.C. Writing a recipe for a balanced breakfast.D. Recording unforgettable moments with friends.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

The county has entered into an agreement with the South Korean firm Alchera to equip its network of fire-spotting cameras with software that detects wildfire activity and then issues a warning to authorities. The technology examines past and current images of terrain (地形;地势) and searches for certain changes, such as flames burning in darkness, said Chris Godley, the county’s director of emergency management. But emergency workers will first have to“teach”the system to distinguish between images that show fire smoke, and others that might show clouds, fog etc. The software will use feedback from humans to improve its algorithm(算法) and will eventually be able to detect fires on its own — or at least that’s what county officials hope.“It’s kind of like learning how to read,”Godley said. “What letters can I put together to make up a word?” The county activated the technology Wednesday and received 16 positive reports of smoke — all of which turned out to be permitted burns, he said. Once a seasonal ban on controlled burns goes into effect in April or May, the county plans to speed up the testing and feedback phase. The hope is that by November, the system will no longer need to be taught and can start providing reliable intelligence. Godley said. “It’s going to take us a while to make sure weget the bugs outand that we really can depend on it because ultimately this is a lifesaving mission.”The technology is intended to help officials investigate potential fire starts earlier so they can get personnel out to them more quickly and issue necessary warnings. Officials expect other places will adopt it if the technology is successful, particularly because it plugs into the camera network that’s already in place statewide.“We ultimately believe its potential could be realized in a year or two,” Godley said. “And it could really havea dramatic impact here in California.”4. What does the system first have to do before being put into work?A. Equip its network of fire-spotting cameras with software.B. Learn to tell between images of fire smoke and other pictures.C. Use feedbacks to improve its ability to detect fire independently.D. Examine images of the terrain and search for any possible changes.5. What do local officials expect the technology to accomplish?A. Be able to make positive reports of smoke.B. Be able to control seasonal burns in the area.C. Help them spot potential fire starts as soon as possible.D. Learn how to distinguish pictures of flames from clouds.6. What does the underlined part in paragraph 3 mean?A. kill all the bugs.B. get rid of mistakesC. provide reliable informationD. speed up testing process7. What does the author mainly intend to tell us?A. AI is creating a dramatic impact in California.B. AI is applied to monitor terrains in California.C. The winner of the road race at the Tokyo Olympics left the sport at the end of 2017 when she found herself out of contract (合同). She came into Tokyo without a professional team and left as an Olympic champion. The 30-year old began her cycling career in 2014 after running injuries that prevented her from continuing her pursuits of triathlon (铁人三项). She later joined a Catalan team and won the Spanish National Cup in 2016.The then-26 year old signedher first professional contract with Lotto Soudal Ladies for the following season. However, she ended her 2017 campaign in April and did not sign a contract for 2018, eventually taking a year off the bike. In 2019, Kiesenhofer came back to the sport as a rider, winning the Austrian national road race. Despite her results, Kiesenhofer sill had no professional contract while going into the Tokyo Olympics.Kiesenhofer was the first rider to attack in the Olympic road race, eventually forming a breakaway along with Carl Oberholzer, Omer Shapira, Vera Looser and Anna Plichta, which went on to reach a gap of 11 minutes. After Looser and Oberholzer were dropped, Kiesnhofer ataced her two remaining breakaway companions. After Shapira and Plichta were caught by the peloton (主车群), the rest of the riders seemed to believe thatthey were racing among themselves for Gold, not knowing that Remehofere was still in front. While it might be a misjudgment from the rest of the peloton that allowed Kiesenhofer to keep her lead of more than two minutes, other riders’ mistakes should not detract from the Austrian’s efforts.Off the bike the new Olympic Champion has a PhD in mathematics after studying at the Technical University of Vienne as well as at Cambridge University. What is Anna’s present job?A. A cycling coach.B. A university teacher.C A professional rider. D. A college student.DMy entire life has been influenced by the fact that I stand way above the average height for both men and women. I was born two weeks late. When I finally entered the world I weighed 11 pounds 10 ounces and was 24 inches long. When my mom told my grandmother my measurements, she asked in amazement, "Are you okay?!"I was healthy, but very shy as a child and into my teens. I'm from a small town, and I grew up and graduated with the same 50 people. I started playing basketball in third grade every Saturday, but I didn't have any control over my awkward body. (I didn't even score a point in a game until many years later.) I was 5-foot-10 in fourth grade. I had a small group of friends in elementary school, but sometimes the boys picked on me, calling me abean pole or the Jolly Green Giant. I still remember my embarrassment when they laughed at me, and how badly I wanted to be invisible. In high school I got more involved in sports, but I spent most days in the art room. By this time everyone at my school was used to my height (by ninth grade I was 6-foot-3), but if I went out of town people would stare at me and comment about my appearance.I was forced into the spotlight wherever I went. With high school came more confidence. I had success in school, the arts and sports. I played basketball, but my true passion was track and field. During my senior year I was the conference champion in high jump and the 400-meter run. The friendships I gained through my involvement in high school boosted my confidence and helped me develop a sense of humor. Now when a stranger told me I was tall I would smile and nod or, if I was feeling determined, I would pretend to feel shocked and thank them for telling me. I had no idea!Still, society keeps me aware of my status as something rare. And even though people tell me I'm beautiful and I should be a model, there are times when I would trade in my long legs for a small frame and tiny feet. I often wish people weren't so rude. I'm a minority only in the sense of height. I like to think that those who have insulted me didn't intend to. I do believe that most people are basically good, but they can be insensitive.12. What can be inferred from Para.1?A. The writer's height has something to do with her late birth.B. Grandmother was unwilling to have the writer as her grandchild.C. The writer failed to have a successful life because of her unusual height.D. The writer was heavier and bigger compared with other babies when she was born.13. By saying 'I was forced into the spotlight', the author probably means that she ________.A.was criticized by othersB. caught public attentionC. was threatenedD. felt inferior14. Which of the following statements is NOT mentioned as the writer's experiences in high school?A. She quit playing basketball and joined the track and field team.B. She no longer felt upset when facing her height problem.C. She had a passion for some sports events.D. She built up more confidence.15. What does the last sentence imply?A. People enjoy making fun of others.B. People are bad andcannot be trusted.C. People tend to bully those who are weaker.D. People sometimes care little about how others feel.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

Dr. Tim Church, who studies the effects of physical activity at Louisiana State University's Pennington Biomedical Research Center, made a study about that.Church headed a study with 464 postmenopausal (绝经后的) women who, for six months, came into the lab to walk a treadmill (跑步机) while researchers watched. The first group walked for 73 minutes a week, the second 136 minutes a week and the third 190 minutes weekly. These women were walking slowly, and could easily carry on a conversation. “Surprisingly, the group that was only walking for 73 minutes a week slowly benefited a lot,”Church says. They say they've gotten more physically active from walking. They haven't necessarily lost weight, but their pants fit differently. It's because they have less belly fat, he says, which is a very good thing. This document from the American Heart Association lists dozens of studies showing similar benefits from walking. And in Church's study, participants gained more than physical benefits. They also gained benefits like less anxiety and fewer symptoms of depression: They also discovered something many of us long for: more energy.“It wasn't a doseresponse (剂量效应) —as in, ‘the more exercise you did, the more your energy increased,’”Church says. “Actually, all three exercise groups increased their levels of energy the same.”21.What does the underlined word “that”in Paragraph 2 refer to?A.If people should walk the dog.B.The effect of running or jogging.C.If people need to exercise hard to benefit.D.The importance of doing exercise regularly.22.The three groups in Church's study .A.were of different agesB.were required to walk slowlyC.were in different physical conditionD.were required to do different exercises23.At the end of Church's study, women in the first group .A.lost weight B.lost belly fatC.benefited little D.benefited the mostBEvery newly-married couple has dreams for the future. Matt and Danielle were no different. These college sweethearts married young and like many young lovers, they believed that their love would sustain them indefinitely.Sadly, the best laid plans, even when they involve true love, rarely amount to a guarantee. As Matt left his home for work on one fateful morning, tragedy struck. As Matt made his way down the highway, he failed to notice that a jeep had stopped abruptly. By the time he realized that the vehicle was right in front of him, it was too late. Ambulances soon arrived and took him to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, broken bones were the least of his problems. The crash had severely damaged his body and his brain. After 9 days in the hospital, Matt’s doctors were ready to turn off his life support machine. They predicted that he only had a 1% chance of ever waking up again and they suggested it would be better, and more humane, to let him die. However, Danielle was not about to give up on her love. More importantly, she found herself pregnant and she was not going to let her child grow up without a father. She believed in miracles. She brought her husband home but as time went on, Matt’s condition remained almost exactly the same. The days soon turned into weeks, and the weeks turned into months. Life was not easy, but after her mother came to help, Danielle had more time to tell her husband their love stories and let him listen to the heartbeat of their child. After half a year at home, however, something in Matt began to change. One morning, something happened that hadn’t happened since the day of the accident: M att opened his eyes, one week after his own baby.It was unbelievable, not only had Matt’s eyes finally opened, but he also began to follow Danielle and her mother around the room with his eyes as well. When he heard the baby’s cry, he smiled.24.Danielle failed to follow the doctors’advice because _________.A. she loved her husband and her child so muchB. she didn’t have the money to treat her husbandC. she doubted the doctors’ judgmentD. she had just married Matt for a short time25.What was the main reason for Mattes waking up?A. Doctors’ treatment.B. Danielle’s nursing work.C. The baby’s cry.D. His strong willpower.26.What can we learn from the passage?A. We’d better start a relationship from university.B. With its numerous malls, hotels, and beautiful beaches,Dubai has always been a popular holiday destination. This city was visited by around 5 million tourists each year. The government wanted to increase this number to 15 million. However,Dubai has only 45 miles of coastline, which is nowhere enough for so many people. To solve this problem,an island that looked like a palm tree was built in 2006,and named the Palm Jumeirah. The plan for the island was extraordinary. It was to host several hotels, shopping malls, restaurants, and homes. Although the initial plan was to build the island from concrete(水泥),a decision was taken to create it from sand and gravel(砾石),so as to give it a natural look.To make sure that this project was a success, the best engineers from across the world were employed. Engineers from Holland formed the majority in this group. To begin with, the engineers calculated the strength of storms at sea,and also the expected amount of rise in water levels due to global warming. And then they found that, the proposed location for the island was neither very wide nor deep. One of the difficulties the engineers came across was to put sand on the sea bed to create the breakwater(防浪堤).Finding the right sand for the project was also a daunting task,as the sand from Dubai’s deserts was too fine. Instead, sand from the sea was used,as it was coarser(粗糙的).Once the breakwater was built, construction of the island began. The Palm Islands (the Palm Jumeirah,Deira Island and Palm Jebel Ali) are really impressive in terms of engineering. However, these projects are so large that they may have changed the ecology of the region. Also,an immense amount of money and resources go into maintaining the islands, which is a major concern at the moment. Only time will tell if building the Palm Islands was actually a good decision.28.What does Paragraph 1 mainly show us?A.Beautiful attractions of Dubai.B.The geographical features of Dubai.C.The purpose of building the Palm Jumeirah.D.The difficulty in developing the tourism industry.29.Why were some changes made to the initial plan for the project?A.To reduce the building cost.B.To get the island completed sooner.C.To get the building materials more easily.D.To make the island look more natural.30.What does the underlined word “daunting”in Paragraph 4 mean? A.Meaningless. B.Difficult.C.Impossible. D.Necessary.31.According to the last paragraph, how is the construction of the Palm Islands? A.Profitable. B.Surprising.C.Worrying. D.Unbelievable.DStained glass(彩色玻璃) artists create different designs by making cuts on the glass to “score”it and then breaking off the pattern that they want to use in the finished product. The most difficult cut in stained glass is called an inside cut. Basically,it’s a curved(弯曲的) line where you throw away the part inside of the curve. The problem with inside cuts is that the edges of the curve tend to break off when the pieces of scored glass are broken apart. As the artist talked about inside cuts,he said,“The glass will break into pieces if you try to cut too much off at once. The best way to do an inside cut is to 7slice off smaller curves piece-by-piece. In fact,it’s not just the best way to do it,but it’s the only way to do it.”How many times do you try to make a big change and cut the entire piece at once? We convince ourselves that we can do this all the time. We’ll 4commit to 5transforming our diet overnight or we get inspired to launch a business in a weekend or we finally get motivated to work out and push ourselves to the edge of burning out.Why not approach your goals and dreams like a stained glass artist? Starting by slicing a shallow curve and breaking a small piece off,you cut a slightly deeper curve and break that off until you have your full inside cut. By slowly cutting deeper and deeper curves, you prevent the glass from breaking as it changes shape.Of course, change isn’t easy—no matter how you do it. Slow gains are boring, but if we keep making small improvements, then pretty soon we will end up with a beautiful masterpiece on our hands instead of a bunch of broken pieces.32.Why is an inside cut believed to be most difficult?A.It needs a one-and-only design.B.It 6calls for nothing but inspiration.C.The edges of the curve break easily.D.The glass inside the curve is easily broken.33.What mistakes are easily made according to Paragraph 3?A.Being too eager to make improvements.B.Being too worried about the final outcome.C.Trying to make a complete change all at once.D.Developing to focus on progress instead of achievements.34.What does the author suggest by saying “slicing a shallow curve”?A.Moving forward with a clear aim.B.Starting slow and improving little by little.C.Developing a new habit with great determination.D.Handling something major first and ignoring the minor part.35.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?A.To show his love for stained glass.B.To introduce the skill of an inside cut.C.To appreciate designs of stained glass artists.D.To share his opinions on how to make a change.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
