(建议用时:35分钟)Ⅰ阅读理解(2019·石家庄教学质量检测二)No spacecraft will ever land on the sun. The sun is a flaming ball of gas that reaches thousands of degrees Fahrenheit. But this year, aship from Earth will fly closer to it than any manmade craft has flownbefore. The mission(任务) is a big development for scientists and, maybe, for everyone else.In the summer of 2018, NASA plans to launch the Parker Solar Probe. After a journey of nearly 90 million miles, it will fly within 3.85 million miles of the sun. Within two months of launching, the probe is expected to reach the sun’s corona(日冕). That’s the sun’s outer atmosphere of gas.Getting there won’t be easy. Designing a spacecraft tough enough to hold up to the sun’s heat has proved difficult. But that hasn’t stopped engineers from trying. Temperatures in the corona can reach millions of degrees. The probe will limit itself to regions where things get no hotter than 2,500. That’s still a heavy heat load for a spacecraft. But a 4.5inchthick heat shield(护罩) will protect the probe’s camera and scientific instruments.NASA says the data the probe collects could provide knowledge into the physics of stars. Our sun is special to us. But as a star, it’s rather common. So the better we understand how it works, the better we understand all stars of mass and colors.Perhaps the most important is what the probe may show us about solar storms. During solar storms, charged particles stream through the solar system. They can disable communications satellites and shut down power systems. One study has found that a very intense solar storm could cause up to $2 trillion in damage in the U.S. alone. It could also black out the East Coast for a year.Understanding solar storms might allow us to predict them and protect ourselves. That could make even a mission with a billion-plus price tag one of NASA’s great bargains.【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文。

When children are little we makethem read aloud, before the teacher and other children, so that we can be sure they “know” all the words they are reading. This means that when they don’t know a word, they are going to make a mistake, right in front of everyone. After having taught fifth-grade classes for four years, I decided to try at all costs to rid them of their fear and dislike of books, and to get them to read oftener and more adventurously. One day soon after school had started, I said to them, “Now I’m going to say something about reading that you have probably never heard a teacher say before.I would like you to read a lot of books this year, but I want you to read them only for pleasure. I am not going to ask you questions to find out whether you understand the books or not. If you understand enough of a book to enjoy it and want to go on reading it, that’s enough for me. And I’m not going to ask you what words mean.”The children sat stunned and silent. Was this a teacher talking? One girl, who had just come to us from a school where she had had a very hard time, looked at me steadily for a long time after I had finished. Then, still looking at me, she said slowly and seriously, “Mr. Holt, do you really mean that?” I said just as seriously, “I mean every word of it.”During the spring she really astonished me. One day, she was reading ather desk. From a glimpse of the illustrations I thought I knew what the book was.I said to myself, “It can’t be,” and went to take a closer look. Sure enough, she was reading Moby Dick, in the edition with woodcuts. I said, “Don’t you find parts of it rather heavy going?” She answered, “Oh, sure, but I just skip over those parts and go on to the next good part.”This is exactly what reading should be and in school so seldom is --- an exciting, joyous adventure. Find something, dive into it, take the good parts, skip the bad parts, get what you can out of it, go on to something else. How different is our mean-spirited, picky insistence that every child get every last little scrap of “understanding” that can be dug out of a book.41. According to the passage, children’s fear and dislike of books may result from __________.A. reading little and think little.B. reading often and adventurouslyC. being made to read too muchD. being made to read aloud before others42.The teacher told his students to read __________.A. for enjoymentB. for knowledgeC. for a larger vocabularyD. for higher scores in exams43. Which of the following statements about the girl is TRUE according to the passage?A. She skipped over those easy parts while reading.B. She had a hard time finishing the required reading tasks.C. But the organizers of a new study say there's no scientific evidence that early musical training affects the intelligence of young people. An estimated 80 percent of American adults think music lessons improve children's ability to learn or their performance in school. They, say that the satisfaction for learning to play a new song helps a child express creativity.Researchers at Harvard University, however, have found that there's one thing musical training does not do. They say it does not make children more intelligent. Samuel Mehr is a graduate student at Harvard's School of Education. He said it is wrong to think that learning to play a musical instrument improves a child's intellectual development. He says the evidence comes from studies that measured the mental ability of two groups of 4-year-olds and their parents. One group attended music class, the other went to a class that places importance on the visual arts—arts that can be seen.“The evidence there is ‘no’. We found no evidence for any advantage on any of these tests for the kids participating in these music classes,” said Mehr. Samuel Mehr says researchers have carried out many studies in an effort to learn whether musical training can make children smarter. He says the results have been mixed. He says only one study seems to show a small percentage increase in IQ, intellectual scores among students after one year of music lessons. He does not believe that IQ is a good measure of child's intelligence. He says researchers in his study compared how well children in the musical training group did on mental processing tasks or projects, then the results were compared to those of children who did not take lessons. There was no evidence that the musical training group did much better on the mental tasks than the other group. The researchers confirmed the results with a larger group of children and their parents. Mr. Mehr says music lessons may not offer children a fast easy way to gain entry to the best schools later in their life. But he says the training is still important for cultural reasons. In his words, “We teach music because music is important for us.”1.According to the new study, musical training ________.A.makes children smarter B.helps a child express creativityC.does not make children more intelligent D.improve children's ability to learn in school 2.Samuel Mehr may agree that ________.A.the children who attended music class are smarter than those who attended arts classB.IQ is a good measure of a child's intelligenceC.we needn't to teach children musicD.music training is still important for cultural reasons3.In order to confirm his view, Samuel Mehr ________.A.conducted more than one researchB.interviewed many American adultsC.taught two groups of 4-year-olds music and artsD.offered children a fast way to be admitted to the best schools4.The article may be taken from a report about________.A.health B.education C.culture D.economy三、七选五根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

But one company in the United ArabEmirates has come up with a plan to provide drinking water for thestate’s citizens. The company intends to drag icebergs from Antarctica tothe gulf coast in order to harvest its fresh water. The company plans to source the massive blocks of ice from Heard Island, around 600 miles off the coast of mainland Antarctica. It will then transport them around 5,500 miles to Fujairah, one part of the UAE. One iceberg could provide enough water for one million people over five years, according to the company. The company’s director says they have already travelled the transportation route and checked the possibility of the scheme, according to reports in Gulf Ne w s. Speaking to the site about what he is calling the UAE Iceberg Project, Abdullah Mohammad Sulaiman Al Shehi said, “We have made the technical and financial plan. We will start the project at the beginning of 2018. We want it mainly for the water. It could also be good for tourism and the weather.”The UAE is one of the driest countries in the world, due to its extremely arid climate, which receives less than four inches of rainfall per year. Despite that, it consumes more water than double the global national average, putting the country at severe risk of droughts over the next 25 years. An average iceberg contains more than 20 billion gallons of water, according to the company. The iceberg takes a long time to melt as 80 percent of it is under the water, while the white ice above reflects sunlight and deflects(使转向) its heat. Blocks of ice will be placed in giant tanks, before being processed. “This is the purest water in the world,”Mr. Al Shehi added.【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文,文中介绍了阿联酋有一家公司计划把南极洲的冰山运到附近的海湾,以解决国内的缺水问题。

flushing toilet, while others are awakened by the lightest sound? To find the answer, sleep researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital conducted an unusual study of 12 self-described deep sleepers. After tests confirmed that the healthy volunteers were solid sleepers, they took part in a three-night study in the university’s sleep laboratory. The participants spent the night in a big and fortable room. But the room also included four speakers positioned near the top of the bed.During the night, the deep sleepers were subjected to 14 different recorded sounds, like street traffic, toilets flushing, and an airplane flying overhead.Next door, the researchers monitored their sleep patterns and brain waves. As expected, all of the participants slept relatively well, but there were differences in how they responded to the noisy interruptions. Some of the sleepers didn’t wake up even when a sound was blasted at 70 decibels (分贝);others were awakened by sounds at 40 or 50 decibels. The researchers discovered that the difference in a sleeper’s reaction to noise could be predicted by the level of brain activity called “sleep spindles(纺锤体)”.A sleep spindle is a burst of high-frequency brain activity ing from deep inside the brain during sleep. The source of the spindles is the thalamus(丘脑),a part of the brain that sends sensory information to the rest of the cortex(皮层).Before the study, the Massachusetts researchers theorized that the spindles are the brain’s way of preventing sensory information from passing through the thalamus and waking the rest of the brain during sleep. They found that sleepers who experienced the most sleep spindles during the night were also the soundest sleepers and were least likely to be awakened by noise.Scientists already know that most people bee lighter sleepers with age, most likely becauseolder people experience less “slow wave sleep”,which is the deepest stage of sleep.People also produce fewer sleep spindles as they age.But even when controlling for the stage of sleep a person was in,the number of sleep spindles still predicted their risk for awakening because of noise.More research is needed, but the findings suggest that a better understanding of sleep spindles could lead to new behavioral or drug therapies for people with sleep disorders. For example, future studies may try to determine whether diet, exercise or other behaviors may influence the number of sleep spindles a person produces during the night.1.Some participants can sleep well through loud noises mainly because ________.A.their brains don’t respond to outside noisesB.their brains react differently to noisesC.they adapt to the environment quicklyD.they don’t pay attention to the monitors2.Scientists believe that the key to affecting deep sleep is more “slow wave sleep” one experiences, the deeper sleep one has.C.The more frequently a sleeper’s brain works, the less information it sends.D.The deeper sleep people have, the more likely they will be awakened by noise. 4.What is the main idea of the passage?A.The differences between the deep sleepers and the light sleepers.B.The experiments conducted by Massachusetts General Hospital.C.The (建议用时:35分钟)Ⅰ阅读理解(2019·石家庄教学质量检测二)No spacecraft will ever land on the sun. The sun is a flaming ball of gas that reaches thousands of degrees Fahrenheit. But this year, a ship from Earth will flycloser to it than any manmade craft has flown before. Designing a spacecraft tough enough to hold up to the sun’s heat has proved difficul t. That could make even a mission with a billionplus price tag one of NASA’s great bargains.【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文。
