BEC高级精讲班第10讲讲义HomeworkreviewI. Homework reviewDear SirsI took your Computer Intermediate Level Course on 22 March at your company's premises. I am writing to complain about the course you provided.I chose your company because of your high reputation in teaching computer courses. Besides, your advertisement really lured me since you emphasised that you had some advantages over rivals. For example, you had an array of highly experienced teachers and a large number of up to date computers at the premises. You could teach students on how to become an expert in using some software, for instance, the word processor, spreadsheet, database and electronic mails. In addition, you promised to arrange satisfied buffet lunch.Unfortunately, the course did not match with what you promised. Only one teacher taught us how to the word processor. The teacher was not an experienced one since he taught us for the whole morning and left us to do nothing in the afternoon. Besides, we had to share one computer because there were six students in one group. Even worse, I had no enough food and felt hungry in the afternoon.Your company charged me a lot on the course and promised to provide a quality course. On the contrary, I did not learn anything from it. Therefore, I would insist on refunding my fee in full. I hope you can put my complaints into prompt attention.I look forward to receiving your reply soon.Yours faithfullyTracy HuV ocabularystudyII. V ocabulary StudyLearning words from the contextear lobehelixesChildhood is represented by formative earsIn face reading, the ears represent our childhood. Some practitioners believe the fortunes of boys and girls, from birth to age seven, are determined by the left ear. The right ear defines their lives from age eight to 14.Another school of thought, however, believes that boys’ lives start from the left ear and girls from the right. But both schools agree that the positions of the ear – from top to ear lobe – correspond to a person’s age.People with “good” ears usually hail from an affluent family, are intelligent and enjoy a lot of love and attention from their parents. Large ears are better than small ones. Their owners tend to be more energetic and enjoy good health. Ears that are higher than or as high as the eyebrows indicate outstanding academic ability and early fame. Good ears should also be well developed, with proportionate inner and outer helixes. Those with inner helixes that are bigger than the outer ones can be stubborn, hard to convince and usually loners. Well-formed and fleshy helixes are also preferred. Thin and poorly shaped outer helixes often reveal poor health at a young stage.Another factor is whether the ears lie flat against the head. Children with such ears are usually quiet and obedient, but more dependent and not keen on experimenting with new things. Those with ears that overly protrude from the head are usually “naughty”.Although non-conformist, they tend to be more creative and curious.Ears that are paler than the face colour are a good sign. They represent fame and career success. Pink and reddish ears symbolize romantic involvement. But dull and dark ears indicate problems with the kidneys, according to Chinese medical theory.People with long, large earlobes generally live long. Fleshy earlobes are also associated with wealth. Avoid piercing your ears if you have bulging earlobes. It diminishes your wealth factor. However, if you have small earlobes, ear piercing can enlarge the flesh and improve wealth.ear lobe noun [countable]the soft piece of flesh at the bottom of your earhelix noun[countable]plural helicestechnical a line that curves and rises around a central line 螺线线ᅳsynonym spiralhail from something phrasal verbto have been born in a particular placeAnd where do you hail from?pierce verb[transitive] to make a small hole in or through something, using an object with a sharp pointSteam the corn until it can easily be pierced with a fork.Rose underwent emergency surgery after a bullet pierced her lung.pierce a hole in/through somethingPierce small holes in the base of the pot with a hot needle.bulge noun [countable]1 a curved mass on the surface of something, usually caused by something under or inside it 膨胀,凸起The gun made a bulge under his jacket.2 a sudden temporary increase in the amount or level of something 突然短暂的上升a bulge in the birthrateRecruitmentmethodsIII. BEC高级精讲班第14讲讲义HomeworkreviewI. Homework reviewl Read this text from a business magazine.A successful businesswomanLaura Ashley’s multi-million pound success came about almost by accident when she was a young married woman, pregnant with her first child. She designed some scarves at home because she was bored. 0 H Ashley’s designs now decorate houses all round the world.H. Those simple home-made items represented the beginning of a business empire which is now well known to millions. She was born in Wales in 1925 but moved to London in 1949 when she got married, and at first she was content to take on the traditional housewife’s role. “The idea of having four babies, cooking, sewing and looking after the home suited me perfectly.”9 What began as a hobby quickly became a successful business as she began to receive orders from a number of large London shops. It didn’t stop there: in the1950s, when most of society was looking forward to the space age, Laura Ashley made a fortune by looking back to past centuries, searching out old designs to decorate a variety of clothes and household furnishings. 10 Soon they were being shipped abroad in large quantities and she began to sell them from her own shop.C. All that changed when she became interested in printing fabrics.G. These traditional products created a huge wave of demand from the USA and elsewhere. In 1961 she moved her business to her native region of Wales, where the operation grew to dominate the town of Carno. 11 A second one was establishing some years later in The Netherlands.F. When its railway station closed, Ashley converted it into a factory.Throughout her life and despite the multinational success of her business, Ashley remained a traditional housewife at heart. 12 She saw the workplace as a kind of home, and her employees enjoyed unusually good working conditions; for example, there were no night shifts and the working week ended at midday on Friday. Even as the company grew, employees still had a say in how it was run. As she said, “our success is due to people. It is our employees who come first.”13 They, ofcourse, have profited from that – as have many others with a stake in the company. The business is now large and successful, with a sophisticated management team. To this day, though, the products remain traditional and all the shops are still decorated like 19th century houses.A. Her company reflected the traditional values she admired.D.When the company was floated on the stock market, many of them opted to become shareholders.By 1995, the year she died, the business had grown so much that she had decide to remain involved only in the area of design. 14 She had never set out to become a businesswoman, but last year the company she started as a hobby reported a turnover of £332 million, with a pre-tax profit of £3.8 million. JK Toys is the pioneer of the hotdesking practice. After implementation, they found it flexible and effective to arrange more shift work, and better use of office equipment. The similar situation brings us a positive expectation.n Childcare serviceMost of our employees are not able to take care of their children because of their busy schedule. Considering the total number of employees who are struggling with this tough situation, we plan to set up a kindergarten. All children of our employees aged below 6 are welcome. The kindergarten in the JK Toys are free of charge and can be a tool of motivation. Employees would enjoy their job with much more dedication, and that is also our purpose.ConclusionsIt is clear that new practices should be adopted into our company to improve the current situation. We could foster a better working environment in the future.RecommendationsIt would be advisable to test these two practices for 2-3 months in order to ensure a positive effect in our company.Homework 2Report on Introduction of Two New PracticesIntroductionThis report aims to introduce two advanced practices –Total Quality Management (TQM) and Just-in-Time (JIT) inventory system, and the benefits of adopting them.New practices from UP CorporationUP Corporation has implemented TQM and JIT inventory system for approximately ten years. By now, owing to the success of implementing these two approaches, it has become the market leader of the car manufacturing industry.Introductions and BenefitsTQM is an organization-wide effort to infuse quality into every activity in a company throughcontinuous improvements. It focuses on teamwork, increasing customer satisfaction and lowering costs. Obviously, it will greatly reduce the cost of dealing with the defective products and disgruntled customers. JIT inventory system is a control system that schedules materials to arrive precisely when they are needed in the production line. This system has tremendous advantages. In particular, it reduces the level of an organization’s inventory to zero, which will free productive capital for other company uses.ConclusionsTo sum up, the introduction of TQM and JIT inventory system into our company will boost our production efficiency, improve quality of our products, lower the costs and enhance customer satisfaction.SuggestionsIt is strongly recommended that training of these two approaches should be given to our staff. As both of these systems require strong coordination from people in different departments, team spirit and communication skills should be emphasized in the training course.infuse verb1 [transitive] formal to fill something or someone with a particular feeling or quality 把….注入; (向…) 灌输be infused with somethingHer books are infused with humour and wisdom.infuse something into somethingThese new designers are infusing fresh interest into the New York fashion scene.2 [intransitive and transitive] if you infuse tea or herbs, or if they infuse, you leave them in very hot water while their taste passes into the water 泡茶,浸渍V ocabularystudyV ocabulary Study(1) 一词多义单词---facilityfacility nounplural facilities1 facilities [plural] rooms, equipment, or services that are provided for a particular purpose 设施,设备All rooms have private facilities (=private bathroom and toilet). 所有的屋子都有公私人使用的设施。

BEC高级精讲班第9讲讲义Home work reviewHomework 1A proposal on improvement of company’s websiteIntroductionWith E-business expanding rapidly, company websites become more and more important. However, our company’s website does not show us to the best advantage. We need to improve it.Situations of our current websiteGenerally speaking, most aspects of our current website are successful as follows:n Our current website is designed beautifully and eye-catching.n All products of our company have been listed on the website and can be dealt with through our website.n The introduction of our company is written perfectly, which can make our customers well realize our corporate history and culture. However, there are also some weaknesses involved in our website.n The specifications and functions of our products are not elaborated sufficiently.n The layout of our website is something messed, which inconveniences our customers finding their intended products.n There is no room for our customers to discuss our products and give feedback to us.New services and informationSome new services and information should be provided so as to strengthen our website. For example,n A search engine will be added to the website.n All products will be given detailed and attractive descriptions.n A new unit, a forum, will be created to facilitate our customers to give comments on our products and contact us.BenefitsWith the above improvements, the customers can find needed products conveniently and quickly. Moreover, they can acquire details of all products and place orders duly. In addition, we can realize the customers’ requirements and improve our products timely and efficiently to maintain and develop our market shares.ConclusionsA perfect website can help us obtain unexpected success, such as reducing our cost and attracting more customers. More importantly, we can get the support from our customers. Therefore, improvements are necessary.RecommendationsWe had better cooperate with experts in website to improve ours. At the same time, each department should participate and collaborate actively. Furthermore, the language used on thewebsite should be concise and exact.Li QingrongManagement DepartmentHomework 2Proposal on Improvement of the websiteIntroductionThis proposal aims to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the current website and recommend an improvement plan and elaborate the benefits it will bring.Existing websiteAs a renowned multinational, our company has a beautiful website with a great deal of graphs and pictures. The framework of the website is reasonably designed and it includes almost all necessary aspects.By contrast, the content of the site is not that satisfactory at all. There is only a brief introduction of our company on it without any updated information. Besides, the security of the website also deserves improvement.Improvements to be madeIt has been proved that websites with abundant information and services get more page hits than those which are appearance-oriented. Consequently, the content of the website should be enriched via adding latest news or stories of our company. The security system of the website also needs optimizing so that it can operate normally when suffering virus attack.BenefitsAfter increasing the content of our website, our customers can know more about the company and keep abreast with the latest events. That will definitely enhance their loyalty to our company and will enlarge our customer base at the same time.A more secure system can ensure the safety of the database of the server and also prevent hostile hacking efficiently.ConclusionOur existing website has some defects and need improvement urgently. Appropriate improvements will bring considerable benefits to our company.RecommendationIt is strongly recommended that the content of the website be increased and the security system be optimized.Homework 3Report on improving our websiteThe proposal aims to raise some issues about our website and provide some recommendations to improve it.SituationsThe website of our company was set up in 2000. It has been running for five years. The website showed how our company runs, our mission statement and our structure, to name but a few. It also has a BBS and manager box which improve communications between staff and top leaders effectively. But the homepage of the website needs updating and cannot reflect our company’s status quo and the development we are making.More informationIn response to the expansion of our company, adding some new information is necessary, such as adding updated news, setting up new database centre, renewal of the web into a more customer-friendly way. A self-service system for customers is also a good idea to improve our customer relationships. The new website should be a centre of company information, and every employee can hear the voice from top leaders through the web. It must be a learning centre from which staff can download the newest technologies and skills to learn. Since our products enter Spain and Japan markets and sales rose dramatically, the Spanish and Japanese versions are also needed.ConclusionsThe improvement of our website will give both company and staff stronger backup, and raise the productivity. The multi-language versions website will be more effective for our imagination and provide stronger after-sales service for our foreign markets.RecommendationsIt is suggested that the website should be rebuilt as soon as possible. We should hire a professional team to achieve the end.其他观点online service, mailbox for complaintsu 请听一段报纸介绍德国汽车厂商如何通过建立儿童网站获取客户源的报道2.Report On Changes in the sales of product in Japan, Indonesia and France during the period June 1994 to January 1997In June 1994, Japanese sales were $20,000. BEC高级精讲班第3讲讲义HomeworkreviewDate: 19 May 2005Report on a one-day training sessionIntroductionThe aim of this report is to recommend a one-day training session entitled ‘Familiarity with Your Post’ for the new sales representatives of the Sales Department.ReasonsWe have recruited several sales representatives recently. In spite of former sales experience, they are not familiar with their new working environment and may need quite a period to adapt to everything. Such a one-day training session seems to be necessary and urgent.Contents and BenefitsThere are many items relevant to the one-day training session for the sales representatives, which are designed to highlight work efficiency in the company.First, some brief information of the company should be given, such as the company’s history, its organizational structure and financial background. The current situation of the company should be emphasized too. These would probably develop their loyalty and affection to the company. Also, they must be informed of the company’s main products, its annual sales volume, and the sales target of this year. Clear recognition of this can help them adjust their personal goals and it will be served as great motivation.Besides, the course can focus on our customers. High values should be put on the types and characteristics of the target customers. Sales representatives should also be expected to understand customers’ needs, which will help them to be more responsive an adaptive. They should be given a brief introduction to the people whom they are working together with sinceco-ordination and teamwork can greatly contribute to the company.RecommendationWe strongly recommend that training be arranged as soon as possible.
