Christmas is the one day of the year that carries real hope and promise for all mankind.
——Edgar Guest The holiday season was approaching, and our economy was still on a 36 path. So many people this past year had 37 faith and, more importantly, hope for a brighter future. People were feeling 38 . The streets were becoming more dangerous.
My husband and I were thinking about the 39 , how they continued to find strength to go on, and how they would spend Christmas this year. 40 from our church was a park, and as 41 came and went, we noticed a larger number of homeless people making their home there. We wanted to make their Christmas special this year, and hopefully 42 them of Christmas pasts with their family and friends 43 hard times came their way. Yes, food and cash would help, but they could receive those any given day, and we wanted to make Christmas Day different.
I 44 Santa candy, individual bags of nuts, cookies, and bright red tissue paper as well as some Christmas girl bags in bright colors with Santa's face and "Ho-Ho-Ho" written across the front. Okay, this was a start, yet it wasn't 45 enough in our minds. Then we saw the fluffy little brown and white teddy bears with red bows around their necks. Having made preparations, early Christmas morning, we set out to the park, stopping at a local Dunkin' Donuts to 46 coffee and doughnuts for the men too.
Never having done this kind of community outreach before, we were not sure how we would be received. The next hour was 47 our wildest expectations. As we approached the park, we saw a few more people than we expected, and we said to each other, "I hope we have enough bags." We were then 48 , and twenty or more people approached our car slowly, still not knowing what to expect as we opened the door.
We had expected to deliver bags to everyone right there by the car and leave, 49 the men walked us over to a pavilion 50 most of them gathered to eat, sleep and just hang out for the day. Once there, we started to pour hot coffee and pass out doughnuts.
51 asked what was inside the bags. Everyone was patient as they took a cup of coffee and a doughnut, sitting down, savoring every sip and bite. We started to hand out the bags. They started to smile and their eyes brightened. Some got two bags 52 and they turned and gave their 53 to someone else, saying "Merry Christmas," happy to share their treats. One younger man, seeing the teddy bear, looked up and said, "I have myself a teddy now." He put it inside his shirt pocket and patted it gently, his eyes gleaming.
Their toughness inspired me that morning --- how they 54 their hardship for a couple of hours, opening their hearts, forgetting their troubles as they share what they had. As we drove away, our own hearts were filled with 55 and hope for better days ahead, and as we looked back, the group gathered under the pavilion waved until we were out of sight.

On the eve of our daughters' weddings, 1 gave both of them what I considered to be excellent marital (婚姻的) advice: Never leave your husband unsupervised (无人监督的) with pruning shears(修枝剪).
If only I had taken my own advice. I recently let my guard down. Thirty-some years of marriage can do that to a woman. Give a man pruning shears and electric trimmers (电动修剪器) and he will give new meaning to "armed and dangerous".
One day earlier this year, my husband said that the crab apple (山楂) tree was dead.
"'Why do you think it is dead?" I asked.
"Look at it. There's not a leaf on it."
"'There's not a leaf on anything. It's March," I said.
"It looked sick last fall and with this bitter winter we had. I'm convinced it's dead."
The truth is he's never liked the crab apple. Sure, it has beautiful blooms in the spring, but then it gets a disease, the leaves curl, and it drops those little apples that sit on the driveway.
Each passing week he pronounced the tree dead. Eventually I began to believe him. Though he agreed it would be a regrettable loss, there was a twinkle (闪光) in his eye. He armed himself a couple of weeks ago and began trimming. A branch here, a branch there, a small limb (树枝), then a larger limb. I watched and then decided to check the wood on some of the branches closer to the
trunk (树干). I broke one off and saw green.
The crab apple was not dead. It just hadn't had time to leaf out. The tree was now falling to one side, but it was not dead. I would have told him so, but he had moved on to a maple. Once the man starts, he can't stop. One trim leads to another.
"'Please, stop!" 1 called.
He smiled and nodded, but he couldn't hear because he had started the hedge (树篱) trimmers and was getting ready to “touch tip” a line of hedges.
Zip (飕飕声), zip, zip.
"What do you think?" he shouted.
"It's supposed to be a privacy hedge: now all that will be private are our ankles (脚踝)."
He started the trimmers again. "Stop!" I called. "Come back!"
"Why?" he shouted.
"You're in the neighbor's yard."

Throughout history owls have been both feared and adored. In Japan owls are associated with happiness and good luck; in most parts of the West, owls are considered to be symbols of wisdom. But in some cultures, such as China, Middle East, Arabia, and East Africa, owls are viewed as sign of bad luck, inevitable(不可避免的) destruction, or death. Then what exactly is this creature with a large, round head, a cat-like fiat face, big forward-facing eyes, and a hawk-like beak?
There are about 150 to 225 different species of owls alive today. Owls are carnivores, mainly hunting insects, mice, rats, hares, and other birds. Most owls sleep in the day and hunt at night. The majority of owl species have an instinctively solitary lifestyle, but some live in groups. A group of owls is called a "parliament".
Owls are farsighted, so they are unable to see clearly anything that is close. However, their far vision is excellent for low-light hunting, and their eyes gather light much better than ours. An owl's large eyes are fixed in their sockets(眼窝), and to look around or behind its back, it must turn its head to change views. Owls can turn their heads about 135 degrees to the left or 135 degrees to the right.
Not only do owls have excellent eyesight but they also have an acute sense of hearing that helps to locate prey flying about in the dark. All the owls in the world have feathers with dull coloration, and this natural disguise hides them in their surroundings and makes them almost invisible killers during a dark night. And the thick and soft feather of an owl act to absorb or muffle (掩盖) the sounds that its wings make while flying. Resting on a tall tree branch at night, an owl will wait patiently for its next warm meal. When a prey appears, the winged predator will noiselessly and stealthily (秘密行动地) dive down in a fast and deadly aerial(空中的) attack that makes good use of its sharp beak and powerful talons (猛禽的爪) to quickly kill the unlucky prey.
Unfortunately, in recent years some owls have been caught and kept as pets, but it is quite difficult to keep such a fierce hunter as a pet. Owls need specialized care, and in most countries, it is illegal for a private individual to keep an owl without specific training and special permits. Remember that the owl is not a domesticated animal. He is a nocturnal predator, and its cry could keep you and your neighbors awake all night. Besides, an owl can be very destructive, and its natural killing instinct, sharp beak, and powerful talons will need to be exercised and honed (磨尖) by shredding your furniture, wallpaper, blankets, carpets and other household items. Even if you are the owner of an owl, it will bite you with its beak or cut you with its talons when you try to pet or hug it. Another obvious reality is that every day you would have to pick up your owl's smelly body waste.
So, think twice before you decide to keep an owl as a pet. It will be wise to let the owl stay in its
natural environment and enjoy the freedom to fly and hunt as it chooses.
63. Most owls hunt at night and sleep in the day. What word is used for this behavior?
A. Destructive
B. Delicate
C. Farsighted
D. Nocturnal
64. In the second paragraph, the underlined word "carnivorous" means ______.
A. animals likely kept as pets
B. animals of plant-eaters
C. plants that absorbs insects
D. meat-eaters
65. After reading this article, we're likely to conclude that _______.
A. the owl's hunting strategy mainly depends on stealth and surprise
B. like humans, owls can move their eyes within their sockets
C. most of the owls hunt in the day by using their keen sense of sight and exceptional hearing
D. owls have an exceptional sense of smell that helps to locate prey in the dark
66. Which of the following is the main idea of the article?
A. The owl has a natural killing instinct, and therefore this bird is not suitable as a pet.
B. Owls are fierce and stealthy night hunting birds that are different from how they are viewed by many people.
C. Owls' good night vision and very good sense of hearing make them excellent hunters at night.
D. To some cultures, owls are symbols of wisdom, while to others they are messengers of bad luck and death.

"Please, mother, do sit down and let me try my hand," said Fred Liscom, a bright active boy, twelve years old. Mrs. Liscom, looking pale and worn, was moving languidly (疲倦地) about, trying to clear away the breakfast she had scarcely tasted.
She smiled and said, "You, Fred, you wash dishes?"
"Yes, indeed, mother," answered Fred. "I should be a poor scholar ifI couldn't, when l've seen you do it so many times. Just try me."
A look of relief came over his mother's face as she seated herself in her low rocking chair. Fred washed the dishes and put them in the closet. He swept the kitchen, brought up the potatoes from the cellar for the dinner and washed them, and then set out for school.
Fred's father was away from home and as there was some cold meat in the pantry (食品储藏室), Mrs. Liscom found it an easy task to prepare dinner. Fred hurried home from school, set the table, and again washed the dishes.
He kept on in this way for two or three days, until his mother was able to resume her usual work. He felt amply rewarded when the doctor, who happened in one day, said, "Well, madam, it's my opinion that you would have been very sick if you had not kept quiet."
The doctor did not know how the "quiet" had been secured, nor how the boy's heart bounded at his words. Fred had given up a great deal of what boys hold dear, for the purpose of helping his mother, coasting and skating being just at this time in perfection.
Besides this, his temper and his patience had been severely tried. He had been in the habit of going early to school and staying to play after it was dismissed.
The boys missed him and their curiosity was excited when he would give no other reason for not coming to school earlier, or staying after school, than that he was "Wanted at home."
"I'11 tell you," said Tom Barton, "I'11 find him out, boys-see if I don't!"
So, one morning on his way to school, he called on Fred. As he went around to the side door, he walked lightly and somewhat nearer the kitchen window than was absolutely needful. Looking in, he saw Fred standing at the table with a dishcloth in his hand.
Of course he reported this at school, and various were the greetings poor Fred received at recess(课间休息)."Well, you're a brave one to stay at home washing dishes!'' Girl boy! Pretty Bessie!””Lost your apron, haven't you, Polly!"
Fred was not wanting either in spirit or in courage, and he was strongly tempted to resent (憎恨) these insults and to fight some of his tormentors (使苦痛的人). But his consciousness of right and his love for his mother helped him.
While he was struggling for self-mastery, his teacher appeared at the door of the schoolhouse. Fred caught his eye, and it seemed to look, if it did not say, "Don't give up! Be really brave!" He knew the teacher had heard the insulting taunts of his thoughtless schoolmates.
The boys received notice during the day that Fred must not be taunted in any manner. They knew that the teacher meant what he said; and so the brave little boy had no further trouble.
67. Which of the following best describe Fred?
A. Brave and adventurous
B. Cautious and friendly

69. The following facts showed Fred's true manliness EXCEPT that ______.
A. he voluntarily did the housework when his mother was sick.
B. he exercised self-control when facing the insults from his classmates.
C. he gave up a great deal of what boys held dear for the sake of his mother.

第六部分:任务型阅读
Could you believe that the ideal person is never the best at anything? Our heads are so full of ambitions about wealth and power that we spin our wheels until we bum ourselves out and are left hopeless and exhausted.
There is great pressure to attain the highest level of achievement. By satisfying our vanity (虚荣) we do ourselves more harm than good. The only way to achieve sustainable happiness is to practice the Golden Mean.
The idea of the Golden Mean has existed for thousands of years. It is at the centre of both Eastern and Western philosophy and has more influence than the teachings of Aristotle and Confucius. The idea is simple. Every quality has extremes at both ends. The Golden Mean is the natural balance between these extremes. At this harmonious point goodness and beauty are achieved.
Socrates used the example of extreme devotion to athletics versus (与…相比) extreme devotion to music to illustrate this idea The athlete becomes overly aggressive and cruel, while the musician becomes overly soft and womanish. The ideal is someone who practices both athletics and music and acquires a harmonious mixture of both qualities.
Consider an example from modern times that I'm sure everyone has observed. The first person is extremely career driven. Each day he focuses on advancing himself. He spends long hours at the office, competes mercilessly with his coworkers, and flatters his superiors. As a result he has almost no personal life. The second person's only pursuit is leisure. He likes to waste time with his friends watching television and playing video games.
Which of these persons is superior? Many people would argue for the hard worker. But at second glance his life is rather cold. His obsession (痴迷) with success has conflicted with his coworkers and left him without a family. He may become rich, but how will he enjoy it? The second man is no better. He has wasted his life in laziness. He has refused to develop himself and exists as a lazybones. Both men are worthy of pity.
I think we'd all agree the ideal would be somewhere in between these two people. So how do we find the abstract Golden Mean?
It all starts with setting the right goals. Whenever you make a goal you need to do it with the right intention. Don't set goals with the intention to command other people. Instead, try to start with a goal that is in between total selfishness and total selflessness.
The next step to reaching the Golden Mean is knowing your limits. You need to know when one more project is going to stress you out. The idea is to maintain balance at all times.
Another step to achieving the Golden Mean is being aware of your personal needs. Sure we need
money and success, but having good relationships with friends and family are just as important.
I know the Golden Mean is hard to live by, but it is the key to finding your inner confidence. Ben Franklin said, "The wise keep learning from the mistakes of others, fools, scarcely from their own." Next time you find yourself willing to do anything to be the best of the best, take a moment to reconsider. You may find it is better to be the best "you" you can be.
第七部分:书面表达
阅读下面的短文,按照要求写一篇英语短文。
James Bender, in his book How to Talk Well tells the story of a farmer who grew award-winning corn. Each year he won a blue ribbon. One year a newspaper reporter interviewed him and learned something interesting about how he grew it.
The reporter discovered that the farmer shared his seed corn with his neighbors. "'How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbors when they are entering corn in competition with yours each year?" The reporter asked. "Why," said the farmer, "didn't you know? The wind picks up pollen(花粉) from the ripening corn and carries it from field to field..If my neighbors grow bad corn, cross-pollination(异花受粉) will slowly reduce the quality of my corn. If I am to grow good corn. I must help my neighbors grow good corn. "
He is very much aware of the connectedness of life. His corn cannot improve unless his neighbors' corn also improves. The lesson for each of us is this: If we arc to grow good corn. We must help our neighbors grow good corn.
