The Usefulness of University Degrees(2)

The Usefulness of University Degrees(2)

The Usefulness of University DegreesRegarding to the question whether getting university degrees is important for success in life, some people say “yes” due to the phenomenon in modern society that most successful celebrities, such as actors, sportsmen, scientists, politicians even many farmers, have received university education and got university degrees. However, others assert that there is no necessary relationship between university degrees and a wonderful life.Maybe both of them are right in a way but in our group’s opinion,a university degree is essential in our further life. The people who deny the importance of university degrees hold the opinion that most university degrees are theoretical and do not prepare students for the real world. They think that society is the best teacher and educates them the most. They take Laoganma--Tao Huabi, the CEO of the most famous chili patse company Laoganma ,who even didn’t finish her primary school for example. Also,Bill Gates,as they said, didn’t obtain his university degree before he successfully built his corporation--The Microsoft. Therefore they think that university degrees are of little value. However, we do not agree with them. As Einstein once said, “Education is what remains after one has f orgotten everything he learned in school”,university education benefits us through our life. Not only do university degrees earn us a living, but they also enhance the quality of our lives.Furthermore ,we choose to accept university education just because of our own intentions , quite different from school which we have to go to . It is the university education that brings us various benefits. However, not all of us gain the opportunities of attending university just because of grade ,financial and other problems.Obviously, many of us deem that the university degree is useful and necessary. In general, there are several reasons for this optimism.A university degree is beneficial to enhance your salary .Sometimes a university degree means maturity, bounce and drive.Job hunter, who graduates with a university degree, are offered more opportunities for better positions and higher salary. In addition, a university degree has longer impact on one’s career life because such a degree shows the graduate’s knowledge in a specified field and ability to work independently.University degrees make you more advantages in the careers fair competition.Having a university degree in hand, you will be more confident to face the employers especially when others don’t have. Most importantly,it’s your better degree that provides you with broader range of jobs. When the work is hard, employers tends to choose the one who has a university degree because a university degree indicates higher skills and quality needed.University de grees are especially needed in many professional fields.”Many professional positions--especially those entail specialized certification or licensing--require a better university degree”,such as medical, machinery, law, finance. As for me,my major is machinery so I have to master plenty of complex professional skills needed for the machine designing major. Therefore,it's hardly possible for a man to design a machine without amachinery degree. As a word, the university degree will benefits us a lot .If we have a university degree,we will have more opportunities to find a better job and have a more comfortable life than those who don't have .Although it is reported that there will be more jobs held by people without university degrees between 2004 and 2014 by Bureau of labor statistics (BLS),those who have a university degree will earn much higher wages on average.Sources:/lounge/importance-of-university-11548.html/wiki/Bill_GatesBill Gates From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia/news/article-2494751/University-wasted-pupils-Child ren-work-useless-degree-says-Harrow-headteacher.htmlUniversity is wasted on some pupils: 'Children should go to work rather than get useless a degree' says former Harrow headteacherBy CHRIS PLEASANCE。

(A)Social function of public libraries in rural areasPublic libraries are various, such as Popular Library, Community Library, Municipal Library, Parish library and Model Public Library. The public libraries in underdeveloped countries are marginalized and without any leading role in society. To develop “social function of the public library as an agent of change for rural development, we need to know more about the public library. The public library is the institution that serves a social function as a change agent in transmitting information and knowledge to the rural development without distinction of religion, race, political beliefs, or gender or sex. “It’s an education for the people.”The social roles of the public library includes:·developing an additional training courses to the rural school, trying to raise the socioeconomic status, intellectual and moral development of rural populations. Through the different activities taking place: Training courses, productive workshops, lectures on various topics, holiday supplies, etc;·serving many people who had to leave school early (very typical of rural areas) by providing adequate equipment and personnel to their information needs;·facilitating and encouraging reading in rural areas, acting as an effective tool against illiteracy, which in Peru and Latin America is one of the socio-educational problems that we suffer; ·helping users disoriented and not accustomed to consult the rural library, encouraging, motivating and attracting them to obtain maximum benefit and satisfaction of their readings ·acting as an “Information Center for all”, but not a “Deposit and audiovisual library materials; for use by all members of the Community, particularly in rural areas. What is interesting in learning, increasing their knowledge and culture, strengthening their appreciation of life and achieve their ideals. The social roles of the public library will depend much on their structure: Child, Youth, Adult, Senior, and its system of organization: Central and branch offices, mobile libraries, book bags, methods widely used in rural areas of many countries. The public library is a state institution, and therefore promoted and sustained by it. It plays the role of the public service. It should not be an inert entity, as has happened in most developing countries. Within a context of underdevelopment, public library remains as an institution isolated from the interests of the population, despite all efforts are made individually to avoid it. The public library and the rural development should be closely related, with the support of an appropriate education policy.答案:71. Types / Kinds 72. But having his heart removed was what saved Craig Lewis’ lif e—and what made him the first living “heartless” man.The 55-year-old had been dying of heart disease. He was told that he only had 12 hours to live. That was when Billy Cohn and Bud Frazier, two doctors from the Texas Heart Institute, US, decided to try something new. They removed Lewis heart and replaced it with an artificial (人造的) one. Less than a week after the operation, Lewis was able to sit up in bed and speak to his family, according to Reuters.Lewis kept on living like a normal person, with only one difference—he didn’t have a heartbeat. The human heart usually pumps blood through our bodies by beating regularly. By contrast, this artificial heart pushes the blood forward with two moving blades(桨叶). If you were to touch Lewis or listen to his chest, you would not feel a heartbeat. If you hooked him up to an EKG(心电图) machine, the line would be flat.Scientists have been trying to create a working artificial heart for years. Many people sufferfrom serious heart disease and cannot get transplants. Until now, all artificial hearts either broke down or caused blocks and infections. But after five years of hard work, Dr Cohn and Dr Frazier developed this artificial heart. It is smaller and quieter than other artificial hearts and can last much longer. They tested it on 38 calves (牛犊) and all of them turned out energetic and healthy. Lewis is the first human proof that the machine is a success. The doctors will have to work more on the device and decide on a final design before it can be widely used. The US Food and Drug Administration will also need to say that the machine is答案:71. wonder 72. edge 73 removed 74. zero 75. flat76. That all depends on who you ask. There are several well-respected college ranking experts out there, but their number one picks vary wildly, from West Point to Harvard University. If anyone is using the rankings as the only way to decide, that is wrong for the rankings. Here is what you need to know to use each of them well when considering college choices. The methods vary wildly.U.S. News & World Report ranks colleges nationally and by region and type, so large national universities, like Harvard and Princeton, don’t appear on the same lists as smaller liberal arts colleges. The colleges themselves provide information including reputation surveys, admissions data, SAT and ACT scores, acceptance rates, faculty salaries, financial resources, class size, andstudent-faculty ratios. Failure to fill out a survey completely (or having the survey completed by different people from year to year) can result in a change in rank. Rankings are generally stable over time.Forbes, which started ranking colleges in 2008, does not divide schools by size or region. Instead, 650 schools are ranked for Forbes based on student evaluations on , the number of graduates listed in Who’s Who in America, salary information for graduated from , average student loan debt and default rates, and four-year graduation rates, among other things. The Princeton Review offers up 62 different Top 20 lists instead of ranking schools in order from best to worst. The data comes from surveying 122,000 students at 376 colleges, The Princeton Review said in a statement, and their lists offer rankings on everything from class size, political activity to social life.Know what you want in a college. Before putting much weight into a school’s rank, it’s important for students to decide what they’re really looking for in a college—and they shouldn’t wait until the last minute to start their search. They have to do the hard homework of understanding the cost, location, activities… listening to people’s advice about where students from that high school have gotten into.Consider the classes and degrees offered by each college—do they fit your interests? What is the campus like—do you want a city setting or a classic, tree-lined courtyard? If you can, visit several schools and talk to students—what teaching style do the instructors have, how are the classrooms set up? And, last but not least, take a look at tuition, room, board, and fees, as well as typical financial aid packages—which schools are affordable for your family?Top universities in any ranking list are probably the most competitive. It goes without saying that only a small number of students can get into the top 10. Students need to be realistic about their qualifications, and understand that, even if they are qualified, they still might not get in. “The top 10 could be drawn from the top five percent of high school students or even less. There’s simply no place to accept every applicant.答案:71. rankings 72. differently 73. itself 74. student / graduate / students’/ graduates’ 75. everything 76. advance 77. consider 78. Chances / Opportunities79. admitted 80. place(D)You want to be confident and feel confident, but what if you're starting with little or no confidence? True self-confidence isn't an overnight acquisition. It takes dedication to realize you are a good human being that is worthy of respect and love.Recognize your insecuritiesWhat does that voice in the back of your mind say? Why do you feel uncomfortable or ashamed of yourself? This could be anything from regrets to friends at school or negative experience. Whatever is making you feel unworthy, or ashamed, identify it, give it a name, and write it down. You can also tear these written pieces to start feeling positive on those points.Get rid of insecurities graduallyEach day you should weaken it. There's no quick fix. Get to the root of the problem; focus on it and understand that you need to resolve each issue before you can move on. Check if it is an old past emotion and if it is really still relevant or applicable in your life today. And that does not mean you have to get rid of whatever makes you feel bad (many times, you simply can't). You need to learn to accept yourself, your past, your circumstances as they are, without necessarily thinking of them as “bad”.Identify your successesEveryone is good at something, so discover the things at which you do extremely well, then focus on your talents. Give yourself permission to be proud of them. Give yourself credit for your successes. Inferiority (自卑) is a state of mind in which you've declared yourself a victim. Do not allow yourself to be victimized.Be PositiveAvoid self-pity, or the pity and sympathy of others. Never allow others to make you feel inferior—they can only do so if you let them. If you continue to dislike and look down upon yourself, others are going to do and believe likewise. Instead, speak positively about yourself, about your future, and about your progress. Do not be afraid to show your strengths and qualities to others. By doing so, you strengthen those ideas in your mind and encourage your growth in a positive direction.Apply “facial feedback theory”Studies surrounding what’s called the "facial feedback theo ry" suggest that the expressions on your face can actually encourage your brain to express certain emotions. So by looking in the mirror and smiling every day, you might feel happier with yourself and more confident in the long run.Help othersWhen you k now you’re helpful to the people around you, and are making a positive difference in other people’s lives (even if it's just being kinder to the person who serves you coffee in the morning), you'll know that you are a positive force in the world—which will boost yourself confidence. Now, dear friends, will you let confidence keep you company? Be confident, andaccomplishing your goals will be just around the corner.答案:71. makes 72. Removing 73. causes / roots 74. what75. praise 76. positively 77. pitied / sympathized77. Playing with words in trademark registration, however, might bring you trouble or even a lawsuit (起诉).US basketball star Michael Jordan filed a lawsuit against Chinese company Qiaodan Sports last week for unauthorized use of his name. The company denied the accusation.“We just use a Chinese translation of a common foreign family name and it cannot be identified with Michael Jordan,” said Hou Lidong, the company’s public relations manager.Jordan and his lawyer are waiting for the court’s reply. But experts have said Jordan’s lawsuit may be difficult to win.China’s law states that a trademark “shall not conflict with any pre vious right acquired by another person.” The “first to use” is a globally recognized principle. In this sense, Qiaodan Sports’ use of the name is legal in China. But the Chinese company’s actions may form an act of unfair competition, said Fu Minrong, a lawyer of Xinwenhua Law Firm in Shanghai, because company profits from making connections between its brand and Michael Jordan.A marketing institute based in Shanghai surveyed 400 young people in 2009. About 90% of the respondents thought Qiaodan Sports belongs to Michael Jordan, the Beijing Daily reported.Even if Jordan loses the lawsuit, Chinese brands such as Qiaodan are not winners either. The case reflects a big problem for Chinese brand s—copycatting (盲目模仿), commented the Beijing Business Today.Criti cs point out that Qiaodan Sports’ reputation and sales would receive a big blow, as customers are unwilling to be referred to as common buyers of copycat goods.Trademark preemptive (抢先的) registration is a global issue. In some cases, it even has become a tool of business competition.Shaolin Temple, for instance, found in 2004 that more than 1,000 brands containing “Shaolin” had been registered without the approval of the temple in the US, Japan and Europe. To deal with that, the temple set up the Henan Shaolin Temple Industrial Development Co, to protect the temple’s intellectual property rights, Xinhua news agency reported. The company has registered about 100 Shaolin-related brands in China and has applied to register “Shaolin” brands in over 100 countri es, Xinhua said.Companies with a global vision are fully aware of the importance of trademarks.Although Facebook is inaccessible on the Chinese mainland, it has registered two Chinese trademarks in 2011 and an English trademark in 2007.71. court 72. nothing 73. reactions / attitudes 74. corresponds75. directly 76. winner 77. called 78. solutions79. For questions 8-10, complete the sen tences with the information given in the passage.Minority ReportAmerican universities are accepting more minorities than ever. Graduating them is another matter.Barry Mills, the president of Bowdoin College, was justifiably proud of Bowdoin's efforts to recruit minority students. Since 2023 the small, elite liberal arts school in Brunswick, Maine, has boosted the proportion of so-called under-represented minority students in entering freshman classes from 8% to 13%. "It is our responsibility to reach out and attract students to come to our kinds of places," he told a NEWSWEEK reporter. But Bowdoin has not done quite as well when it comes to actually graduating minorities. While 9 out of 10 white students routinely get their diplomas within six years, only 7 out of 10 black students made it to graduation day in several recent classes."If you look at who enters college, it now looks like America," says Hilary Pennington, director of postsecondary programs for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which has closely studied enrollment patterns in higher education. "But if you look at who walks across the stage for a diploma, it's still largely the white, upper-income population."The United States once had the highest graduation rate of any nation. Now it stands 10th. For the first time in American history, there is the risk that the rising generation will be less well educated than the previous one. The graduation rate among 25- to 34-year-olds is no better than the rate for the 55- to 64-year-olds who were going to college more than 30 years ago. Studies show that more and more poor and non-white students want to graduate from college – but their graduation rates fall far short of their dreams. The graduation rates for blacks, Latinos, and Native Americans lag far behind the graduation rates for whites and Asians. As the minority population grows in the United States, low college graduation rates become a threat to national prosperity. The problem is pronounced at public universities. In 2023 the University of Wisconsin-Madison– one of the top five or so prestigious public universities – graduated 81% of its white students within six years, but only 56% of its blacks. At less-selective state schools, the numbers get worse. During the same time frame, the University of Northern Iowa graduated 67% of its white students, but only 39% of its blacks. Community colleges have low graduation rates generally –but rock-bottom rates for minorities. A recent review of California community colleges found that while a third of the Asian students picked up their degrees, only 15% of African-Americans did so as well.Private colleges and universities generally do better, partly because they offer smaller classes and more personal attention. But when it comes to a significant graduation gap, Bowdoin has company. Nearby Colby College logged an 18-point difference between white and black graduates in 2023 and 25 points in 2023. Middlebury College in Vermont, another top school, had a 19-point gap in 2023 and a 22-point gap in 2023. The most selective private schools –Harvard, Yale, and Princeton – show almost no gap between black and white graduation rates. But that may have more to do with their ability to select the best students. According to data gathered by Harvard Law School professor Lani Guinier, the most selective schools are more likely to choose blacks who have at least one immigrant parent from Africa or the Caribbean than black students who are descendants of American slaves."Higher education has been able to duck this issue for years, particularly the more selective schools, by saying the responsibility is on the individual student," says Pennington of the Gates Foundation. "If they fail, it's their fault." Some critics blame affirmative action –studentsadmitted with lower test scores and grades from shaky high schools often struggle at elite schools. But a bigger problem may be that poor high schools often send their students to colleges for which they are "undermatched": they could get into more elite, richer schools, but instead go to community colleges and low-rated state schools that lack the resources to help them. Some schools out for profit cynically increase tuitions and count on student loans and federal aid to foot the bill – knowing full well that the students won't make it. "The school keeps the money, but the kid leaves with loads of debt and no degree and no ability to get a better job. Colleges are not holding up their end," says Amy Wilkins of the Education Trust.A college education is getting ever more expensive. Since 1982 tuitions have been rising at roughly twice the rate of inflation. In 2023 the net cost of attending a four-year public university – after financial aid – equaled 28% of median (中间旳)family income, while a four-year private university cost 76% of median family income. More and more scholarships are based on merit, not need. Poorer students are not always the best-informed consumers. Often they wind up deeply in debt or simply unable to pay after a year or two and must drop out. There once was a time when universities took pride in their dropout rates. Professors would begin the year by saying, "Look to the right and look to the left. One of you is not going to be here by the end of the year." But such a Darwinian spirit is beginning to give way as at least a few colleges face up to the graduation gap. At the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the gap has been roughly halved over the last three years. The university has poured resources into peer counseling to help students from inner-city schools adjust to the rigor (严格规定)and fasterpace of a university classroom –and also to help minority students overcome the stereotype that they are less qualified. Wisconsin has a "laserlike focus" on building up student skills in the first three months, according to vice provost (教务长)Damon Williams.State and federal governments could sharpen that focus everywhere by broadly publishing minority graduation rates. For years private colleges such as Princeton and MIT have had success bringing minorities onto campus in the summer before freshman year to give them some prepara tory courses. The newer trend is to start recruiting poor and non-white students as early as the seventh grade, using innovative tools to identify kids with sophisticated verbal skills. Such pro grams can be expensive, of course, but cheap compared with the millions already invested in scholarships and grants for kids who have little chance to graduate without special support. With effort and money, the graduation gap can be closed. Washington and Lee is a small, selective school in Lexington, Va. Its student body is less than 5% black and less than 2% Latino. While the school usually graduated about 90% of its whites, the graduation rate of its blacks and Latinos had dipped to 63% by 2023. "We went through a dramatic shift," says Dawn Watkins, the vice president for student affairs. The school aggressively pushed mentoring (辅导) of minorities by other students and "partnering" with parents at a special pre-enrollment session. The school had its first-ever black homecoming. Last spring the school graduated the same proportion of minorities as it did whites. If the United States wants to keep up in the global economic race, it will have to pay systematic attention to graduating minorities, not justenrolling them.注意:此部分试题请在答题卡1上作答。

a lot of these genes will return to normal within five years. This means your body is trying to heal (治愈) itself of the harmful effects of smoking. But the changes in some of the genes stay for Lesson4 Is an Ivy League Diploma Worth It?

(City University of New York’s Macaulay Honors College),后者是免费的。

5.Robert Pizzo

The Pursuit of a College Degree: A Passport to OpportunitiesIn the tapestry of life, education plays a vibrant thread that weaves through the fabric of our aspirations and achievements. The acquisition of a college degree is not merely a rite of passage but a strategic investment in one's future. It is a beacon that guides individuals through the labyrinth of career choices and life decisions, offering a multitude of advantages that extend beyond the tangible certificate.First and foremost, a college degree is a passport to a world of professional opportunities. It serves as a key that unlocks the doors to a diverse array of careers. Employers often use educational qualifications as a primary filter when sifting through job applications, making a degree a critical threshold for entry into many industries. It is a signal of a graduate's commitment to learning and their ability to navigate complex subjects, which are valuable traits in the modern workforce. Moreover, the journey through higher education is a crucible that forges critical thinking and problem-solving skills. College is a microcosm of the real world, where students are challenged to analyze, synthesize, and apply knowledge across a spectrum of disciplines. This holisticapproach to learning equips graduates with a versatiletoolkit that can be applied to a myriad of professional scenarios, setting them apart from those without a degree. The social and cultural benefits of a college education are equally significant. Universities are melting pots of ideas and cultures, offering students the chance to engage with diverse perspectives and to form lasting relationships. These connections can be the foundation of a robust professional network, which is often the invisible hand that opens doors to job opportunities and collaborations.Furthermore, a college degree is an investment thatyields long-term financial returns. While the initial costs can be daunting, the average lifetime earnings of a college graduate significantly surpass those of a high school graduate. This economic advantage not only improves the quality of life for the individual but also contributes to the broader economy by increasing the tax base and consumer spending. In addition to the financial gains, higher education fosters personal growth and self-discovery. The college years are a time when many individuals are away from home for the first time, navigating the complexities of independence and self-reliance. The experiences and challenges faced during this period cultivate resilience, self-awareness, and a sense of identity that can be a source of strength throughout one's life. However, the advantages of a college degree are notwithout their challenges. The rising cost of tuition and student debt has become a significant burden for many graduates. It is essential to weigh the potential benefits against the financial implications and to consideralternative pathways, such as trade schools, online degrees, or apprenticeships, which can also lead to fulfilling and lucrative careers. In conclusion, a college degree is a multifaceted asset that offers a wealth of opportunities and advantages. It is a gateway to professional success, a crucible for personal development, and a foundation for lifelong learning. As we navigate the complexities of the 21st century, the value of a well-rounded education has never been more apparent. It is a journey that, despite its challenges, can be profoundly rewarding and instrumental in shaping a brighter future for both the individual and society at large.。

大学文凭有用吗英语作文

大学文凭有用吗英语作文Well, it really depends on what you want to do with your life. If you're looking to get into a specific profession that requires a university degree, then yes, a university diploma can be really useful. It shows that you have the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in that field. On the other hand, if you're not sure what you want to do with your life, or if you're just going to university because you think you're supposed to, then a university diploma might not be all that useful. You might end up with a lot of debt and not much to show for it.But hey, even if you don't end up using your university diploma for your career, the experience of going to university can still be really valuable. You learn a lot about yourself and the world around you, and you make connections with people that can last a lifetime. And let's not forget about the personal growth that can come from getting a university diploma. You learn how to think critically, how to communicate effectively, and how to solve problems. These are all skills that can be useful no matter what you end up doing with your life. So, in the end, I guess it's up to you to decide if a university diploma is useful or not. It really depends on your goals and what you make of the experience.。
