• Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which have powerful effects on our minds and feelings. This clever use of words is what we call literary style (文体).Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can express his meaning in words which sing like music , and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them correctly,or they will make our speech silly and common. • [语篇解读] 本文为议论文。作者建议我们

hard.Loneliness wasn’t the problem—I was in constant contact with clients by email and phone. But I did feel claustrophobic (患幽闭恐怖症的).With wheels on my desk chair and the refrigerator just two feet away,I could work for twelve straight hours without ever standing up.There was no physical separation between my living room and work table,so the only way I found to feel like I was going “home” at the end of the day was to forbid my use of the working chair. At ninethirty at night, when I turned my computer off,I felt a bit like the family dog reaching the high point of its day,“Whoohoo!I get to go for a walk!” Then, around eleventhirty,I’d find myself turning on the computer again to solve some work issue that was preoccupying me...At the same time,I discovered that working this way had definite advantages. Not only did I save an hour from going to work and back home,I also gained a great deal of control over my time. There were fewer interruptions than in an office,I could schedule meetings and phone calls in blocks to increase the productive time around them, and the easy acc ess to my workspace late at night and on weekends could obviously be of mixed effects. This was especially important to me since,in addition to consulting work,I was writing fiction and planning a new business.Working at home allowed me to manage all of these activities at once without losing significant sleep. This turned out to be well worth the claustrophobia, which also faded as I became more used to the new routine.A short walk in the late afternoon could reduce the shutin feeling and make me get energetic again to work through the evening. You might think that, with all this added time flexibility,I would even find a few hours to clean my apartment, but, unfortunately, this never happened.41.The writer felt claustrophobic because________.A.she was lonely B.she worked long hoursC.she couldn’t go for a walk D.she worked alone for long 42.Where does the writer work?A.In her own home. B.In an office.C.In a hospital. D.At a newspaper.43.What does the writer think of working late at night and on weekends?A.It was convenient for her.B.It had advantages and disadvantages.C.She didn’t like it at all.D.She enjoyed working late.44.What’s the writer’s gener al attitude towards her work?A.She didn’t like it very much. B.She enjoyed doing her work.C.It allowed her little spare time. D.It was too hard for her.B(2020年成都第一次诊断,C)Fear and its companion pain are two of the most useful things that men and animals possess,if they are properly used.If fire did not hurt when it burnt, children would play it until their hands were burnt away.Similarly,if pain existed but fear did not,a child would burn itself again and again, because fear would not warn the child to keep away from the fire that had burnt him or her before.A really fearless soldier—and some do exist—is not a good soldier because he is so on killed;and a dead soldier is of no useto his army.Fear and pain are therefore two guards without which men and animals might soon die out.In our first sentence we suggested that fear ought to be properly used. If,for example, you never go out of your house because of the danger of being knocked down and killed in the street by a car,you are letting fear rule you too much.Even in your house you are not absolutely safe:a plane may crash on your house,or ants may eat away some of the wood in your roof, and they later may fall on you,or you may get cancer! The important thing is not to let fear rule you,but instead to use fear as your servant and guide.Fear will warn you of dangers;then you have to decide what action to take.In many cases, you can take quick and successful action to avoid the danger. For example, you see a car coming straight towards you;fear warns you,you jump out of the way,and all is OK.In some cases, however, you decide that there is nothing that you can do to avoid the danger. For example, you cannot prevent a plane from crashing into your house, and you may not want to go and live in a desert where there are no plants. In this case, fear has given you its warning;you have examined it and decided on your course of action,so fear of this particular danger is no longer of any use to you,and you have to try to overcome it.45.Children would play with fire until their hands were burnt away if________.A.they were given no warning beforehandB.they didn’t have any sense of pain at allC.they had never burnt themselvesD.they felt afraid of the fire46.A really fearless soldier________.A.is of a little use to his armyB.is not afraid of battles at allC.is nothing but a dead soldierD.is easy to get killed in a battle47.People sometimes succeed in timely avoiding dangers because________.A.they are warned of the danger and take quick actionB.they are quick both in mind and in actionC.they are calm in face of dangerD.they have gained much experience48.It is implied but not stated that________.A.fear is always something helpfulB.too much fear is harmfulC.fear should be used as a servant and g uideD.fear is something strange and particularCA British train station has put up a no kissing sign to stop lovers going full steam ahead with their overamorous farewells.Commuters have been told:if you want to get up to that kind of business,do it in the car park. The sign has been put up at the dropoff point (落客处) at Warrington Bank Quay station in the town of Warrington, between Liverpool and Manchester in northwest England.A similar sign, this time permitting kissing, has been put up elsewhere in a zone where kissing is considered tolerable.“We have not banned kissing in the station,” said a spokesman for operators Virgin Rail.“But we have put the sign up at the dropoff point because it is not a very big area and it often gets busy. The sign is a lighthearted way of reminding people to move on quickly. If people wish to spend a little moretime with their loved ones before they leave, then they should park in the shortstay car park nearby.”The busy station links the town with the major cities London,Birmingham,Glasgow,Edinburgh,Liverpool and Manchester. However, one station is trying to rescue love from the tracks.High Wycombe, northwest of London,is having none of it and is actively urging commuters to show their emotions in public.“Kissing is welcome here!...we would never dream of banning kissing,” says a poster of a cartoon couple embracing, framed by a pink heart.“Railway stations are romantic places,” insisted Kirsteen Robertson from Chiltern Railways.“They are where fond farewells and emotional reunions take pla ce,where relationships start with a glance and even,in the case of our Marylebone station last November where one passenger will propose (求婚) to another over the public address system.”“So our passengers are more than welcome to share a kiss in our statio ns.”49.The train station has put up a no kissing sign in order to________.A.ban kissing in the stationB.get passengers to walk quicklyC.avoid embarrassmentD.prevent illegal practice50.The underlined word “it” here refers to________.A.rescuing love from the tracks B.banning kissing in the station C.kissing at the dropoff that________.A.the dropoff point is not a safe placeB.the dropoff point is a quiet placeC.the dropoff point is a romantic placeD.the dropoff point is often packed with the traffic and passengers DDo you remember piling up building blocks (积木) when you were younger? In order for a great structure to be created, you needed skill, patience, hard work, and the right blocks. To build a healthy and happy life, you need skill, patience, hard work, and the right blocks. In life, though, these blocks,or tools, are called life skills. No one wants to feel frustrated. No one wants to feel sick.No one wants to fight all the time with friends or family. When these issues come up,though, life skills can help you deal with and improve the situation.Do you remember the six components of health? They are physical, emotional, social, mental, spiritual, and environmental.Life skills can help improve these areas individually or,sometimes, together. It just takes practice. So what are the life skills?First of all,an individual should assess his health.Doing this helps the person decide on his current state of wellbeing and pick the actions and behaviors that will improve his health.Second,a person should try to communicate effectively. When a person can clearly state his feelings and listen effectively as well, relationships with others can improve.Third,an individual should practice wellness. This means the person is trying to choose nutritious meals, avoid unhealthy behaviors, and get enough sleep.Fourth,________.Each person will experience difficult situations. Each person experiences anger or depression at some point in his life.To build a healthy life, though,a person works through the situation.Fifth,a person needs to be a wise consumer.A consumer buys products.A wise consumer makes D.Life Channel.EYou may picture firefighters holding a hose (水管) outside of a burningbuilding, but the Golden Eagles Hotshots don’t fight fires quite that way. When they go into action, you may not even see a fire truck. The Hotshots are firefighters who battle fires in wilderness areas. But don’t think you’ll only find them in their home state California.Wherever there is a national wildfire emergency, the Golden Eagles Hotshots could be there. But these firefighters don’t work the same way as firefighters in a big city. They work in areas where there are large numbers of trees, bushes, and grass. They climb up and down steep hills to clear brush and burnable debris (残骸).They sometimes use water, but they often fight fire with fire! They do that by lighting what are called “backfires”,which are small, controlled fires that burn up fuel in the path of larger wildfires. That way, when the Wildfire gets there,it has nothing to burn and nowhere to go,because all the burnable fuel has already gone up in smoke. The Hotshots also clear away fuel using oldfashioned hard work. For example, they use a saw to cut away trees and heavy brush that could catch fire.Of course there are times when the Golden Eagles Hotshots do have trucks to supply water to the fires. But the water is limited, and these guys have to rely on hard work more than anything.Physical fitness is very important. They have to be in great physical shape to handle steep hills and difficult terrain (地形) while carrying a 60—pound pack. The Golden Eagles Hotshots definitely work hard for their pay.But thanks to their efforts, many lives have been saved, many houses have not burned, and countless trees are still st anding.57.The firefighters mentioned in the passage________.A.do much of their work in CaliforniaB.avoid climbing steep hills in their workC.do their work equipped with advanced toolsD.carry out their work mostly in forests and mountains58.According to the passage, why do the firefighters light “backfires”?A.To signal for help.B.To remove obstacles.C.To protect trees and bushes.D.To prevent the fire from spreading.59.What can we learn about the Golden Eagles Hotshots ?A.They are firefighters working in big cities.B.Their work requires physical strength.C.They are voluntary firefighters working for free.D.They usually hold a hose to put out the fires.60.What is the author’s attitude towards the Golden Eagles Hotshots?A.Appreciative. B.Doubtful C.Worried. D.Critical.

典例剖析1.[2015·浙江高考,C篇]If humans were truly at home under the light of the moon and stars, we would go in darkness happily, the midnight world as visible to us as it is to the vast number of nocturnal (夜间活动的) species on this planet. Instead, we are diurnal creatures, with eyes adapted to living in the sun's light. This is a basic evolutionary fact, even though most of us don't think of ourselves as diurnal beings. Yet it's the only way to explain what we've done to the night: We've engineered it to receive us by filling it with light....Q What does “it”(Paragraph 1) most probably refer to?A.The night.B.The moon.C.The sky. D.The planet.[答案]A指代判断题。

根据第一段中的“even though most of us don't think of ourselves as diurnal beings. Yet it's the only way to explain what we've done to the night: We've engineered it to receive us by filling it with light.”可知,事实上,虽然我们并不承认自己是白昼生物,但很多时候我们总是用光来照亮夜晚,故此处it指代前面的“the night”。

故选A项。

2.[2015·湖南高考,A篇]...Cyclists jump on and off pavements (which are meant for pedestrians), ride at speed along the pavements, and think they have a special right to go through traffic lights when they are on red.I was almost knocked down recently by a cyclist riding on the pavement when there was a cycle lane right next to him.Other road users, including horse riders, manage to obey the rules so why not cyclists? It's about time they had to be registered and insured, so when they do hit a pedestrian or a vehicle, or cause an accident, at least they can be traced and there might be an opportunity to claim.——JMLWrite to Vie w points of the ne w spaper.Q The underlined word “they” in the third letter refers to ________.A.accidents B.vehiclesC.pedestrians D.cyclists[答案]D指代判断题。

根据第三封信第一段第一句的主语“Cyclists”可知,该信主要是对骑自行车者的抱怨和建议;结合画线词所在句中的“they had to be registered and insured, so when they do hit a pedestrian or a vehicle, or cause an accident”可知,骑自行车者应该注册登记并购买保险,这样当他们撞上行人或车辆,引发事故时,可以被查出,承担责任。

由此可推知,“they”指代的是“cyclists”。

故D项正确。

3.[2015·福建高考,B篇]...Papa, as a son of a dirt-poor farmer, left school early and went to work in a factory, for education was for the rich then. So, the world became his school. With great interest, he read everything he could lay his hands on, listened to the town elders and learned about the world beyond his tiny hometown. “There's so much to learn,”he'd say. “Thoughwe're born stupid, only the stupid remain that way.” He was determined that none of his children would be denied (拒绝) an education. Thus, Papa insisted that we learn at least one new thing each day. Though, as children, we thought this was crazy, it would never have occurred to us to deny Papa a request. And dinner time seemed perfect for sharing what we had learned. We would talk about the news of the day; no matter how insignificant, it was never taken lightly. Papa would listen carefully and was ready with some comment, always to the point.Q The underlined word “it” in the second paragraph refers to “________”.A.one new thing B.a requestC.the news D.some comment[答案]C指代判断题。

根据画线词前面的“We would talk about the news of the day; no matter how insignificant”可知,吃晚饭的时候,作者一家人会谈论这一天所发生的新闻,不管这些事是多么的无关紧要。

由此可推知,“it”指代的是这句话中的“the news”。

故答案选C。

技能演练1.Have you heard of the term “tweenager” ? It's a new word being used in the UK to describe children between the ages of about 10 and 12. Why are the media suddenly referring to kids in this way?Well, more and more companies are beginning to create products and services for tweenagers. The Disney company sells the Hannah Montana television show, music, films and products to tweenagers and their parents. You can get everything from branded lunchboxes and cellphones, to fan magazines and clothing. The High School Musical series of films is also intended for a tweenage audience. So, it's all about sales, which tells us tweenagers must have more money, freedom and influence upon their parents than they have ever had before....在英国,随着科技的进步和生活水平的提高,孩子越来越受关注。

本文就讲述了tweenager(大约10至12岁之间的孩子)的变化。

Q The underlined word “they” in the second paragraph most probablyrefers to “________”.A.companies B.salesC.tweenagers D.their parents答案:C指代判断题。
