Since the beginning of time, men have looked for this extremely valuable item, gold.Gold is soft and easy to form into different objects. If it gets wet, it doesnot rust like iron or other metals. Acids do not change it. One important reasonthat gold is so valuable is that it is scarce.Due to its softness, gold must be combined with other metals to harden it andgive it strength. By hardening gold, people can then make coins and jewelry with it. Metals commonly mixed with gold are nickel, platinum, and copper. Gold jewelry bears a number and the letter K. The K means karat (carat), which is a measure of the amount of pure gold in the jewelry. Pure gold is 24K. Therefore,a necklace which is 14K is fourteen parts gold and ten parts other metal. Many countries utilize gold for certain coins, but this practice is not ascommon now as it once was. When a person feels like running away from something he thinks will hurt him» we call this emotion fear. If the person wants to remove the danger by attacking it< we call the emotion anger. The emotions of joy and love are aroused when we think something can help us. An emotion does not have to be created by something in the outside world. It can be created by a person’s thoughts.Everyone has emotions. Many psychologists believe that infants are born without emotions. They believe children learn emotions just as they learn to read and write. A growing child not only learns his emotions but learns how to act incertain situations because of an emotion.Psychologists think that there are two types of emotions: positive and negative. Positive emotions include love, liking, joy, delight and hope. They are arousedby something that appeals to a person. Negative emotions make a person unhappy or dissatisfied. They include anger, fear, despair, sadness and disgust. Ingrowing up, a person learns to cope with the negative emotions in order to be happy.Emotions may be weak or strong. Some strong emotions are so unpleasant that a person will try any means to escape from them. In order to feel happy, theperson may choose unusual ways to avoid the emotion. Strong emotions can make it hard to think and to solve problems. They may prevent a person from learning or paying attention to what he is doing. For example, a student taking an examination may be so worried about failing that he cannot think properly. The worry drains valuable mental energy he needs for the examination.66. We learn from the passage that an emotion is created by something _____.A. one thinks bad or goodB. one feels in dangerC. one faces in the outside worldD. one tries to escape from real life67. Which of the following is NOT true?A. Children learn emotions as they grow up.B. Babies are born with emotions.C. Emotions fall into two types in general.D. For the walker’s convenience, a set of stone steps had been built* which were fairly steep. That was the place I found myself behind a husband and wife climbing up the steps with each other’s support. The couple seemed to be farmers in their forties. The wife in a red coat was walking with a stick, an empty trouser leg swaying below. With one hand on his shoulder, she leaned almost entirely on her husband* who carefully kept balance with her and carried her other stick. They limped (6W) their way upward withgreat difficulty. My curiosity urged me to overtake them and look back over my shoulder secretly. The glance sent a shiver through me» which produced a sensation I had never experienced before. The husband himself was also disabled —blind in both eyes! What struck me even more was the smile they both wore on their faces, such a happy smile as could only be seen from brides and bridegrooms. With few words between them, they smilingly helped each other struggle upwards. Then I noticed there were patches on their clothes, and their cloth shoes were homemade, worn-out but tidy. How could such sweet smiles reconcile with the patched clothing or the physical handicap? I got quite puzzled. When they advanced far ahead I still couldn’ t tear my eyes away from them, I was movedand my heart filled with admiration. At that moment I suddenly realized how superficial my idea of happiness hadbeen! To me it had always been associated with wealth, fame and power, the poor and the lowly having no share of it. However, happiness can be found in very ordinary life. I witnessed it on the weather-beaten faces of the husband andwife who had shared happiness and misfortune together. There is always happiness when there is an unfailing mutual support between two persons in love. -;71. How did the husband and wife climb up the steps?A. They didn’t help each other.B. According to sociologists, there are several different ways in which a person may become recognized as the leader of a social group. In the family, traditional cultural patterns confer leadership on one or both of the parents. In other cases, such as friendship groups, one or more persons may gradually emerge as leaders, although there is no formal process of selection. In larger groups, leaders are usually chosen formally through election or recruitment. Although leaders are often thought to be people with unusual personal ability, decades of research have failed to produce consistent evidence that there is any category of " natural leaders ". It seems that there is no set of personal qualities that all leaders have in common: rather, virtually any person may be recognized as a leader if the person has qualities that meet the needs of that particular group. Research suggests that there are typically two different leadership roles that are held by different individuals. Instrumental leadership is leadership that emphasizes thecompletion of tasks by a social group. Group members look to instrumental leaders to "get things done". Expressive leadership, on the other hand, is leadership that emphasizes the collective well-beings of a social group´s members.(71) Expressive leaders are less concerned with the overall goals of the group than with providing emotional support to group members and attempting to minimize tension and conflict among them. Instrumental leaders are likely to have a rather secondary relationship to other group members. (72) They give others tasks and may discipline group members who inhibit(阻碍)attainment of the group´s goals. Expressive leaders cultivate a more personal or primary relationship to others in the group. They offer sympathy when someone experiences difficulties and try to resolve issues that threaten to divide the group. As the differences in these two roles suggest, expressive leaders generally receive more personal affection from group members: instrumental leaders, if they are successful in promoting group goals, may enjoy a more distant respect.第31题What does the passage mainly discuss?A.The problems faced by leaders.B.How leadership differs in small and large groups.C.How social groups determine who will lead them.D.The role of leaders in social groups.第32题The passage mentions all of the following ways by which people can become leaders EXCEPT______.A.recruitmentB.formal election processC.specific leadership trainingD.traditional cultural patterns第33题In mentioning "natural leaders"(Para. 2), the author is making the point that______.A.few people qualify as "natural leaders"B.there is no proof that "natural leaders" existC.natural leaders are easily accepted by the members of a groupD.natural leaders share a similar set of characteristics第34题The passage indicates that instrumental leaders generally focus on______.A.ensuring harmonious relationshipsB.sharing responsibility with group membersC.identifying new leadersD.achieving a goal上一题下一题(35~38/共20题)Ⅱ.Reading Comprehension Directions: There are 4 passages in this part, each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them, there are 4 choices marked A, B, C, D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.5. (73) In its early history, Chicago had floods frequently, especially in the spring, making the streets so muddy that people, horses, and carts got stuck. An old joke that was popular at thetime went something like this: A man is stuck up to his waist in a muddy Chicago street. Asked if he needs help, he replies, " No, thanks. I´ve got a good horse under me. " The city planner decided to build an underground drainage(排水)system, but there simply wasn´t enough difference between the height of the ground level and the water level. The only two options were to lower the Chicago River or raise the city. An engineer named Ellis Chesbrough convinced the city that it had no choice but to build the pipes above ground and then cover them with dirt. This raised the level of the city´ s streets by as much as 12 feet. This of course created a new problem: dirt practically buried the first floors of every building in Chicago. Building owners were faced with a choice: either change the first floors of their buildings into basements, and the second stories into main floors, or hoist the entire buildings to meet the new street level. Small wood-frame buildings could be lifted fairly easily. But what about large, heavy structures like the Tremont Hotel, which was a six-story brick building? That´s where George Pullman came in. He had developed some house-moving skills successfully. To lift a big structure like the Tremont Hotel, Pullman would place thousands of jackscrews(螺旋千斤顶)beneath the building´s foundat ion. One man was assigned to operate each section of roughly 10 jackscrews. At Pullman´ s signal each man turned his jackscrew the same amount at the same time, thereby raising the building slowly and evenly. Astonishingly, the Tremont Hotel stayed open during the entire operation, and many of its guests didn´t even notice anything was happening. Some people like to say that every problem has a solution. But in Chicago´ s early history, every engineering solution seemed to create a new problem. Now that Chicago´s waste water was draining efficiently into the Chicago River, the city´s next step was to clean the polluted river.第35题The author mentions the joke to show______.A.horses were fairly useful in ChicagoB.Chicago´ s streets were extremely muddyC.Chicago was very dangerous in the springD.the Chicago people were particularly humorous第36题The city planners were convinced by Ellis Chesbrough to______.A.get rid of the street dirtB.lower the Chicago RiverC.fight against heavy floodsD.build the pipes above ground第37题The underlined word "hoist" in Paragraph 4 means "______".A.changeB.liftC.repairD.decorate第38题What can we conclude about the moving operation of the Tremont Hotel?A.It went on smoothly as intended.B.It interrupted the business of the hotel.C.It involved Pullman turning ten jackscrews.D.It separated the building from its foundation.上一题下一题(39~42/共20题)Ⅱ.Reading Comprehension Directions: There are 4 passages in this part, each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them, there are 4 choices marked A, B, C, D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.9. Even people who don´t understand English can enjoy Chaplin´s films because they are almost silent. It isn´t what he says that makes us laugh.(74) His comedy(喜剧)doesn´t depend upon words of language, but on the little actions which mean the same thing to people all over the world. In his films, Chaplin raises his thick black eyebrow(眉毛). He straightens his coat or swings his walking stick in the air. He hides behind a fat lady or climbs under a table to escape from his enemies. Trying to be brave, he faints away on the floor.(75) He pretends to be what he is not and never could be—a rich, successful, important man. It is the secret of Chaplin´ s huge success. He discovered the character of the little tramp almost by accident. As a young man, he and his brother traveled to America in a small company of actors and acted in various cities. One day Chaplin was invited to join a new company that was making comedies. It was in his second film that he wore the clothes that made his reputation: black hat, tight coat, big trousers, huge shoes, moustache(胡须)and walking stick. He intended simply to make people laugh. But the odd disguises(扮相)made him look both comic and sad. His appearance was a popular success, right from the beginning. But his early films hadn´t much story. They were full of actions. The little man played fast-moving games of hide-and-seek with his enemies, racing down city streets, jumping on trains, and boating down rivers.第39题Which of the following is true?A.Chaplin was a homeless traveler.B.Chaplin hardly did actions in films.C.Chaplin amused his audience by his actions.D.Chaplin always did the same actions in his films.第40题The secret of Chaplin´ s success is that he created a character who______.A.faints away on the floor, trying to be braveB.behaves as if he was a successful, important rich manC.straightens his coat or swings his walking stick in the airD.hides behind a fat lady or climbs under a table to escape from his enemies第41题With the help of his odd appearance, Chaplin intended to look______.A.richB.funnyC.successfulD.impressive第42题Chaplin´ s films were full of the following actions EXCEPT______.A.boating down riversB.racing down city streetsC.jumping on trainsD.riding bicycles上一题下一题(43~46/共20题)Ⅱ.Reading Comprehension Directions: There are 4 passages in this part, each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements.
