I must admit, I haven't always liked anim als. In fact, I distrusted them greatly whil e growing up, and I still fear the ones I don't know personally now. What set my beliefs in stone was being attacked-not on ce but many times, including the summer after second grade when I was bitten by a rabbit. Then, when I was nine and ridin g my dirt bike down the road, a large do g charged me and tried to bite my ankle. After all those negative experiences, ther e was one thing I knew for sure: all creat ures, great and small, were no friends of mine.

Despite my avoidance of animals, Lisa ha d a dog called Bailey. Bailey didn't like me, but he tolerated my existence once he realized I wasn't going anywhere.

Then my worst fear occurred when I sat on the sofa reading and my wife worked at the dining-room table paying the bills.

I saw Evan crawl across the family-room carpet as he made his way behind the sof a, then Bailey quietly entered the room a nd headed to where Evan stayed. I nearly jumped out of my skin when I heard the dog start a fearful barking behind me.

Throwing the book away, I rushed around the sofa with great fear.

Having witnessed our dog killing a scorpion and saving my son, I was speechless.

Throwing the book away, I rushed around the sofa with great fear. The echoes of past encounters with animals rang loudly in my ears and my

heart pounded in my chest. But as I rounded the corner, what I saw stopped me in my tracks. Bailey, who I'd always seen as a potential threat, was standing over Evan. Although his growls were fearsome, they were not directed at my son, but rather at something on the floor next to him---a scorpion, whose tail
