17、You put a blue lobster (龙虾) in boiling water, and a few minutes later, you take out a red lobster. Have you ever wondered why the lobster changes its color when it is cooked?
Scientists at Manchester University’s school of chemistry in the UK have an an swer. They found that a chemical in the shell called astaxanthin (虾青素) causes the lobster’s color to change.
This chemical is red and is in the shells of both raw and cooked lobsters. But in raw lobsters, the redness of the astaxanthin is covered by the dark blue color of another chemical in the shell, crustacyanin (虾青蛋白).The darker color helps lobsters avoid enemies in the wild. And it is likely to have evolved (进化) by natural selection.
However, when heated, the structure of crustacyanin changes. This makes the red color of astaxanthin stand out.
This is similar to the changing colors of tree leaves in autumn. Leaves always contain the pigments that make them red, orange and yellow. But for most of the year, those pigments are covered by the bright green color of chlorophyll (叶绿素). In autumn, when the temperature cools and the sun’s light becomes weak, chlorophyll fades to make these
warm-colored pigments visible (看得见的).
“It is a scientific curiosity (神奇), but it may also have important uses in the real wor ld,” said John Helliwell, the lead scientist, to The Daily Telegraph. “It could help people know when food has been cooked properly.”
1.Whose color is red?
A.Crustacyanin.
B.Astaxanthin.
C.Chlorophyll.
D.Pigment.
2.Which of the following is TRUE?
A.Raw lobsters have no crustacyanin.
B.Crustacyanin only exists in the shell of dead lobsters.
C.Crustacyanin is a dark blue chemical.

3.From Paragraph 6 we know that ______.
A.pigment in leaves can protect trees from sunshine
B.chlorophyll disappears because of high temperatures
C.pigments in leaves can be seen all year round
D.chlorophyll fades when sunlight becomes weaker
4.What can we learn from the article?

B.No one knows why lobsters change their colors.
C.US scientists discovered the chemical astaxanthin.
D.Some animals change their colors with the seasons.

18、A 12-year-old girl from Virginia, US, never thought that a simple message she put online could bring her big problems. She posted the words, “Killing. Meet me in the library Tuesday”, with three emojis(表情符号) of a gun, a knife and a bomb(炸弹) on Instagram, a social media(社交媒体). She was told that she broke the law because of threatening(威胁) her school.
This problem is not far away from us. Not long ago, Ni Hanxiang, a Chinese student at a university in the US, was sent back to China after expressing on social media that he would kill his teachers if he failed to pass his exams.
In China, posting threatening words online is also against the law. In 2013, Wu Hongfei, a singer, got into trouble for saying on weibo that she wanted to blow up a building.
“Threatening happens not only face to face but also through the Internet, social media and the telephone,” said Mr. Cao, a lawyer from Chongqing. “Although the law of China protects people’s right of free speech, it doesn’t include words that threaten others’ lives and national safety.”
“Some people may not mean to threaten. They may just be trying to say “I’m strong”, said Fred Pratt, a lawyer from the US.
The girl’s mother said her daughter was a good kid who had never been in trouble before. Ni Hanxiang also said he didn’t realize that what he put online was so serious.
“But not knowing the law doesn’t mean the law will treat you any differently if you break it,” says David Allen Green, a lawyer from the UK. So, do you think we’d better spend a minute or two thinking about the words or emojis we use on social media before we press “send”?

A.Fred Pratt thinks some people may not mean to threaten
B.the girl’s mother didn’t think her daughter was a bad child
C.Cheating in an examination at school may get you into trouble
D.Putting threatening words on QQ may bring you problems
4.This passage mainly wants to tell us that _______.
A.we shouldn’t break the US law if we stu dy at a university in the US

Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover by Michelle As an old saying goes, don’t judge a book by its cover. I didn’t recognize the true meaning of it until last year. In my neighborhood came a man with a scary face. The first several times I came across him, I always ran way quickly, with hands covering my eyes. Later, I knew from my parents that he made a lot of effort to keep our neighborhood clean as a volunteer, which provides a better living environment for us. Realizing the mistake I made, I went to say sorry to him. And I really appreciated him for helping me learn that a person’s internal beauty is always the most valuable part instead of his appearance.。
