Here are two letters from our readers expressing their concern about school assessment.
Students should be allowed to study without worrying about grades . Fortunately, most educators realize that students have different interests and abilities. However, grade-based assessment is still very common. Grades often hold back creativity. Competing for better grades causes many students to turn down opportunities to go in for music, drama and sports. Grades are also an unfair measure of a student’s ability. I do not deman d, as some extremists do, that grades should no longer be recorded. However, I do believe that less importance should be placed on grades.
I hope that someday grades will become optional at Village High School.
Magdalena Smith,
President Drama Club
Let’s face the facts about grades. Grades perform three basic functions. First, grades get students to work at their highest level of competence (能力). Second, they act as an encouragement for hard-working students and as a warming to those who are not. Finally, grades are an effective standard by which to measure students' achievement. Good grades help students to get jobs and to get into university.
I've spoken with a number of students who have jobs, and most of them say that they were hired mainly because of their grades. My grades helped me get a part-time job and will help me into university next year. I think grades are extremely important at Village High School.

On the first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn’t know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady staring at me with a smile that lit up her entire being.
She said, “Hi, girl! My name is Rose. I’m 87 years old. Can I give you a hug?”
I laughed and enthusiastically responded, “Of course you may!”and she gave me a giant hug. “Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?” I asked.
She jokingly replied, “I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and travel!”
I grinned(露齿而笑),“I mean, seriously, why?”I said. I was curious what may have motivated her to take on this challenge at her age.
“I always dreamed of having a college education and now I’m getting one!” she told me.
Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus symbol and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and enjoyed the attention she received from the other students. She was living it up.
At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football dinner party. I’ll never forget what she taught us.
“We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There is only one secret to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You’ve got to have a dream. When
you lose your dreams, you die!” she said.
“There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don’t do one productive thing, you will turn 20 years old. If I am 87 years old, and stay in bed for a year, and never do anything, I will turn 88. Anybody can grow older. But every minute counts for young men,”she added.
“The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity for change. Have no regrets. The elderly usually don’t have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets.”
She concluded her speech by courageously singing“The Song of Rose”. She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives.
At the year’s end, Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep.

When I came to China a little over two years ago, at the height of Shanghai’s summer season, I was spending summer in ways I never had before —indoors, absolutely 100% indoors. I had, of course, discovered something called Ele.me as well as Taobao and AliPay. It was like a dream come
true, and I spent a week like that before going outside.
Once outside, I realized how simple life could be —with some of my indoor habits. Namely, I didn’t need cash. Gone was the trouble of having to find and carry change. All it took was a quick scan of a QR code and money-switched hands. However, as I grew more and more comfortable with this lifestyle, I came to realize how much more isolated I was from my fellow human beings. Instead of the few extra seconds of human interaction you get when a cashier counts out your change, you get a machine that beeps and tells you your transaction(交易) has gone through.
Furthermore, I realized that an entire generation was left behind. Most people my grandparents’age don’t know how to use a smartphone, let alone mobile payment. How upset they must feel when they are turned away from a shop that only accepts Alipay and WeChat Pay!
Despite these weaknesses, mobile payment has indeed made our lives vastly easier. The youth are accepting it. However, with money easily moving around with the touch of a button, we are slowly gaining a wrong impression of its value. One can often hear stories of how a child might rack up (累积) huge bills on their parents’credit cards by buying items while playing a game on an iPad or iPhone. We may feel the same way when walking past a shop on the way home —a few yuan spent there can’t hurt, right? Compare that feeling to handing over paper money, and you might realize how much easier it is to let go of money when you aren’t actually holding it.
Mobile payment is an important aspect of our generation. However, we must acknowledge the problems that come with it. In the end, we must come to define it rather than let it define us.
29.According to the author, in summer, life outside can be much simpler with the help of ____.
A. air-conditioning
B. Ele.me and Taobao
C. mobile payment
D. QR codes
30.According to the author, what problems may come with mobile payment?
① A lack of human interaction.
②Increasing risks of theft.
③ A wider generation gap.
④Wrong impressions of money value.
A. ①②③
B. ①②④
C. ①③④
D. ②③④
31. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. The author had never tried mobile payment before moving to China.
B. Mobile payment requires a scan of a QR code.
C. In some shops in China, customers can now pay using only mobile payment.
D. The author thinks we should stop mobile payment from developing further.

Always Remember Your “Initial(最初的)Wishes”
The primary message coming out of the recently completed 19th National Congress of the CPC(中国共产党十九大) in Beijing consists of two parts. The first is that the party is entering a “new age” and the second is the need to focus on the “initial wishes” that established the CPC’s beginning. In other words, although life today is much more different than that in the past, people should not forget the “goals” of the past.
The pioneers who founded the CPC almost one hundred years ago were living in difficult and dangerous times. But all of them were committed to making life better for their countrymen. Their goals were to make China more egalitarian (人人平等的), peaceful and prosperous. Most of those goals have been achieved, but according to President Xi, there is still work to be done and people should be guided by the “initial wishes” of the founders.
T he idea of “initial wishes” can also be useful in your personal life. Young people are always encouraged to set goals for the future. But life is not simple; it’s full of complexities, struggle s and frustrations, and it may leave you wondering what your “initial wishes” are and why they are so important.
Take for example a young person who wants to become a doctor and help cure sick people. After many years of study and several years of practice, he finds that he is working long hours for little money. Worse still, many patients don’t appreciate his effort s; they only criticize and complain. We have even seen incidents of doctors being physically attacked by their patients. It’s easy then for that young doctor to become pessimistic and lose his goal.
But the ones who are persistent are the ones who change the world and they are the ones who understand that true happiness in life comes from being selfless, not selfish. That young doctor, for example, will remain true to his goal by remembering the “initial wishes” of why he became a doctor — to help people.
I hope that you, too, can hold firm to your “initial wishes” — no matter where you go and what you do.
32.Which has the similar meaning to the underlined phrase in the paragraph two?
A. were addicted to
B. were devoted to
C. were accustomed to
D. were used to
33.According to the article, what are the CPC’s “initial wishes”?
A. To help China enter a new era.
B. To help its countrymen achieve their goals.
C. To make China more egalitarian, peaceful and prosperous.
D. To end the difficult and dangerous times its founders were living in.
34. According to the author, it could be difficult for one to accomplish his “initial wishes” because
____.
A. some “initial wishes” are unrealistic
B. life is full of difficulties and struggles
C. there are too many pessimistic people
D. many people do things just to help themselves
35.What does the author mainly want to prove by mentioning the young doctor in the article?
A. The bitter life of young doctors.
B. The real sources of happiness in life.
C. The diff iculties of holding firm to one’s “initial wishes.”
D. The importance of “initial wishes.”

The power of our names
“Names are the important part of our identity. They are related to important legal identities---how we are identified by states or governments,” says Jane Pilcher, a sociologist at the University of Harvard, “They are also part of our social cultural identity, showing who we are in gender(性别), race and other ways.”___36____There is now some evidence that this answer is yes.
David, the director of Northwestern university, analyzed pairs of sisters to determine how their names might influence their chosen area of study. “I found that the more androgynous(中性特质的) a girl’s name is, the more likely it is she will choose math and science course, compared to her sister,” David said. ___37___
__38__David found that having middle school-aged boys with names that are traditionally given to girls led to higher rates of disruption(中断学业),particularly if there was a girl in the class with the same name.
“In most English-speaking cultures, about 97% of first names clearly indicate whether the child is male or female,” said Pilcher. “Boys who have girls’ names can be damaged by that, because to be feminine(女性气质的) for a boy is considered a bad thing. Masculinity(男性气概) has been the more highly valued quality throughout history.___39__
Some countries are so concerned about children with unusual names that they make rules.__40___ It is reported that the rule has caused some violence because it is embarrassing for these kids.
Of course, as David points out, our names can only influence our lives to a certain degree, and for plenty of people, not at all. “My view is more that we should give our kids names that we love
but be aware people in society are going to treat them differently based on it.”
A. Our names influence how we think and behave.
B. For boys, however, it may be a different story.
C. In Germany, for example, names must be approved and indicate gender.
D. In the U.K., parents tend to give kids a double first name, like Amelia-Rose.
E. A girl might actually be able to benefit from having a more typically masculine
name.
F. Considering the importance of our name in establishing our identity, could these
choices change our path in life?
G. Similarly, another study showed that women with names that are normally given
to boys were more likely to be lawyers.
