When I worked in a large city, passing by someone who was homeless wasn’t an uncommon sight. The difficult situation of those I saw touched me deeply.
I felt I must do something, and, as a single mother, I decided to come up with a plan that fitted my limited budget (预算). I began by setting aside five to ten dollars and passing them out to those I met on the street each week.
Though a dollar felt like a small amount, I realized how powerful it was. For me, I recognized that those I passed by were people just like me. Sometimes we would joke a bit and smile together. On some occasions, I was able to give more. I don’t know how and if the dollars helped, but I know that the connections we made did.
One day after I had started this weekly practice, I had saved up enough to buy myself a new winter coat. With it around my shoulders, I realized that my old coat could still be put to use by someone who had little or nothing to protect them from the cold. However, at that moment, I felt inspired to pass on this opportunity for kindness. I turned to the salesman who had helped me, and asked if he would feel comfortable taking my old coat, walking to the corner, and offering it to someone in need. Slightly taken aback, he smiled. “I will as soon as I get a break,” he said. “Thanks for being so considerate.”
I can’t help but feel that my experiences with kindness have moved me to pass it on, and in this way, I feel I’ve helped more than just those I pass by on the street. Kindness touches many hearts, and I am grateful for the way it has touched mine.
21. Why did the author decide to come up with a plan?
A. Because she needed to set aside some bills.
B. Because she wanted to increase her limited budget.
C. Because she always passed by some homeless people.
D. Because she wanted to do something for the homeless people.
22. What did the author think of the dollars she gave to those people?
A. It didn’t make sense.
B. It could help them a lot.
C. It might have been a small amount to them.
D. It brought a friendly connection between them.
23. What do the underlined words “taken aback” in the fourth paragraph probably mean?
A. Surprised.
B. Satisfied.
C. Upset.
D. Frightened.
24. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Helping People Who Are Homeless.
B. My Experiences with Kindness.
C. Raising Money to Help Those in Need.
D. My Weekly Practice of Helping Others.
B
Still seeking a destination for your weekend break? There are some places which are probably a mere walk away from your college.
King’s Art Centre
A day at the Centre could mean a visit to an exhibition (展览) of the work of one of the most interesting contemporary artists on show anywhere. This weekend sees the opening of an exhibition of four local artists.
You could attend a class teaching you how to ‘learn from the masters’ or get more creative with paint—free of charge.
The Centre also runs two life drawing classes for which there is a small fee.
The Botanic Garden
The Garden has over 8,000 plant species; it holds the research and teaching collection of living plants for Cambridge University.
The multi-branched Torch Aloe here is impressive. The African plant produces red flowers above blue-green leaves, and is not one to miss.
Get to the display house to see Dionaea muscipula, a plant more commonly known as the Venus Flytrap that feeds on insects and other small animals.
The Garden is also a place for wildlife-enthusiasts (热爱者). Look for grass snakes in the lake. A snake called ‘Hissing Sid’ is regularly seen lying in the heat of the warm sun. Byron’s Pool
Many stories surround Lord Byron’s time as a student of Cambridge University. Arriving in 1805, he wrote a letter complaining that it was a place of “mess and drunkenness”. However, it seems as though Byron did manage to pass the time pleasantly enough. I’m not just talking about the pet bear he kept in his rooms. He spent a great deal of time walking in the village.
It is also said that on one occasion Byron swam naked by moonlight in the lake, which is now known as Byron’s Pool. A couple of miles past Grantchester in the south Cambridgeshire countr yside, the pool is surrounded by beautiful circular paths around the fields. The cries of invisible birds make the trip a lovely experience and on the way home you can drop into the village for afternoon tea. If you don’t trust me, then perhaps you’ll take it from Virginia Woolf – over a century after Byron, she reportedly took a trip to swim in the same pool.
25. As is mentioned in the passage, there is a small charge for _________.
A. attending the masters’ class
B. working with local artists
C. learning life drawing
D. seeing an exhibition
26. “Torch Aloe” and “Venus Flytrap” are _________.
A. common insects
B. impressive plants
C. rarely-seen snakes
D. wildlife-enthusiasts
27. We can learn from the passage that Byron seemed _________.
A. to fear pet bears
B. to like walking
C. to be a heavy drinker
D. to finish university in 1805
C
The demands of the modern world are growing day by day and this is putting more pressure on scientists to do research. However, as stated by Griffiths, “There is no hope of doing perfect research”. Naturally, there have been a lot of criticisms(批评), as many scientists immediately announce that their research methods are very safe and that they have the perfect research theory.
However, scientific history is filled with examples, in which a perfect scientific solution that was based on years of scientific research has been overturned (推翻) with new theories. Naturally the first example that comes to mind is the fact that Newton’s Theories were thought to be very safe and they were used in all fields of science. For centuries, thousands of scientists around the world used Newton’s Theories to formulate (规划) other theories.
However, after nearly two centuries of use, Newton’s Theories were found to be not as perfect as they were thought. Through Einstein’s publication on the General Theory of Relativity, it was found that Newton’s laws were imperfect in explaining all motions (运动) that were taking place in our universe. It was found to be imperfec t under some conditions, even though Newton’s laws are still used today to predict motion at low speeds.
Thus, perfect research is only a myth (神话). Of course, this does not mean that a scientist should simply give up and accept imperfection in his or her research efforts. Improvements and changes in research techniques and methods are a natural part of evolution (进化) and it is each scientist’s responsibility to take it forward as much as possible.
While the final answer to the universe’s questions may neve r exist, a time will come when there will be fewer questions as new answers are found and more improved research is carried out by scientists around the world.
28. Why have there been a lot of criticisms?
A. Scientists have a negative attitude.
B. The modern world demands more and more.
C. Griffiths does not believe what scientists say.
D. Many scientists arrive at their conclusions (结论) too fast.
29. Through the publication of the General Theory of Relativity, Newton’s Theories turned out
to be _________.
A. not so perfect
B. completely wrong
C. very safe
D. very exact
30. What will scientists do to deal with the “imperfectness” problem?
A. Improve and change their methods and techniques.
B. Try their best to carry out the perfect study.
C. Ignore it and do as they please.
D. Accept the fact and give up.
31. We can learn from the last paragraph that _________.
A. the number of questions is sure to increase with the passing of time
B. the universe’s questions are sure to have a fi nal answer
C. there will be more scientists in the world in the future
D. scientists are carrying out improved studies

BARCELONA, Spain––A company behind plans to open the first hotel in space says its purpose is to accept its first paying guests in 2021 although critics (批评家) question the investment (投资) and time frame for the multibillion dollar project.
The Barcelona–based architects (建筑师) of the Galactic Suite Space Resort say it will cost $4.4 million for a three–night stay at the hotel, with this price including an eight–week training course on an island.
During their stay, guests would see the sunrise 15 times a day and travel around the world every 80 minutes.
Galactic Suite Ltd’s CEO Xavier Clara munt says the project will put his company at the forefront of a new industry with a huge future ahead of it, and forecasts space travel will become common in the future.
“It’s very normal to think that your children, possibly within 15 years, could spend a weekend
in space,” he told Reuters Television.
A promising space tourism industry is beginning to take shape with buildings in progress in
New Mexico of Spaceport America, the world’s first facility(设施) built specially for
space–bound commercial (商业的) customers and fee–paying passengers. British industrialist
Richard Branson’s space tours firm, Virgin Galactic, will use the facility to send tourists to
space at a cost of $200,000 a ride.
Galactic Suite Ltd, set up in 2007, hopes to start its project with a single pod (分离舱)
in orbit 280 miles above the earth, which can hold four guests and two astronauts.
More than 200 people have expressed an interest in traveling to the space hotel and at least
43 people have already booked it. The numbers are similar to Virgin Galactic with 300 people already
paid or signed up for the trip, but unlike Richard Branson, Galactic Suite Ltd says they will
use Russian rockets to transport their guests into space from a spaceport to be built on an island
in the Caribbean.
But critics have questioned the project, saying the time frame is unreasonable and also where
the money is coming from to pay for the project.
Claramunt says a billionaire space enthusiast has paid $3 billion to support the project.
32. Xavier Claramunt’s attitude towards the space tourism industry can be described as _________.
A. quite critical
B. slightly worried
C. very hopeful
D. fully satisfied
33. Virgin G alactic’s gu ests will be transported into space in _________.
A. American rockets
B. Spanish rockets
C. British rockets
D. Russian rockets
34. Which of the following is one of the critics’ concerns about the project?
A. It will be a waste of resources.
B. It may lack economical support.
C. It is hard to ensure tourists’ safety.
D. There are many technical difficulties.
35. The best title for the passage would be _________.
A. Space Tourism: The Surprising New Industry
B. Space Travel Will Become Common in 15 Years
C. The Wor ld’s First Space Hotel Is to Open in 2021
D. The World’s First Commercial Spaceport Is Being Built

In 2007, after fourteen years as a single parent, I remarried. This didn’t put much stress

One night my boys were going out together after dinner. In turn, they kissed me good-night.
When they came near to my husband, Marty, I expected the usual round of handshakes. 39 That simple action showed their full acceptance of their stepfather and our new family life.
Suddenly I remembered the evening when the three children were frightened when they knew we
were divorced. They had gone through a lot in facing such a sudden change. 40 I smiled proudly.
They had done well. They could deal with whatever came their way. And that’s the most that any
parent can ask.

W: I’m sorry you can’t because you bought them at a sale price. However, you can exchange them
for a bigger size.
M: I have already looked around here, but I can’t find the proper size for me. I have to wear them at my coworker’s housewarming party this Saturday.

W: I was planning on going with my sister, but she got a phone call from her boss and found out that she has to work. So she can’t drive me there.
M: Well, I think some of the city buses have stops near the National Park. It would take a little longer than driving, but not much. Or you can take a taxi.

W: But it’s Grace’s birthday, not her cats’! She enjoys reading. Let’s get her a book. M: OK, let’s go to the bookshop then.
W: I prefer shopping online. It’s easier.
M: OK. Let’s use Dad’s computer. How about this book on cats? It seems to be interesting. It is only 6 dollars.
W: That’s quite cheap, but she has that book already. Mum gave it to her for Christmas, remember? M: OK, not this book. What then? Some sweets?
W: It’s not your birthday. Grace really dislikes eating sweet things. And she wants to lose weight. M: I know what! She loves flowers. Let’s get her some.
W: Flowers don’t last. I prefer to give presents that last. Let’s get her a plant then.
M: I’d love to give her that! Let’s check some pages for plants.

M: Hi, Julie. Your phone is turned off and I guess you must be celebrating with your friends.
Your mum and I watched TV yesterday evening and heard about the good news about your novel.
Wow! This must feel as good as the day you graduated from university! No, even better than that! Anyway, I’m phoning just to say you’ve made me a very proud dad! I’m really delighted for you. You’re interested in writing all the time. I remember you joined a writing club at the age of 11 and attended many lectures there. You took part in several writing competitions but never won a thing but you never gave up, did you? You’ve worked so hard to realize your dream and you completely deserve what they’ve offered you. I can’t wait to see your new novel in the shops. When will it be coming out, do you know? Well, as I said, I am really proud of you. Speak soon. Love you.。
